My Inner Sanctum
by
Jody Gehrman

Hello, Urban Fantasy Investigations fans! I'm super happy to be here, especially since this blog has one of the coolest banners ever. Seriously, that's such an awesome little scene our host has going up there. I totally want to step into it, even if there is a terrifying monster lurking at the top of the stairs. I'm guessing I get to be the menacing heroine in the leather pants, though, so I'll know exactly what to do when Mr. Spooky gets to me.

Speaking of spooky little scenes, I thought I'd tell you a little about my favorite corner of the world, my writing room. This is the inner sanctum, the cockpit, the witch's workshop where I cast fictional spells.

Okay, full disclosure: it's not usually this clean. I tidied up a bit for you guys. Just outside the frame there are coffee cups, reams of paper, dirty socks and plates strewn with toast crumbs. You know, tools of the trade.

Here's a quirky fact about my writing cave: It used to be a hair salon. My husband, a brilliant carpenter-artist dude completely transformed it for me. He added skylights and French doors and tile and stairs. Every once in a while, though, you can still catch a whiff of the Ghost of Perms Past.

Just outside the window above my desk there are several hummingbird feeders. You can barely see them in this photo; they're just little red blips above my computer. For some reason, having a front row view of hummingbirds and their feisty dramas totally soothes me while I write. Maybe it's because I get a little glimpse of nature while I hole up inside. Also, hummingbirds are so energetic and determined. They speak to the manic, hurry-up-and-finish-this chapter part of me.

Before I go, here's a shot of my partner in crime: my obese and grumpy cat, Max. She usually sits in my lap while I write, which can get quite awkward at times. Seeing as she weighs about four hundred pounds, shifting positions proves challenging. Still, I can't imagine life without her. After all, every witch needs a familiar!
