Suspension of Disbelief: So I Married a Werewolf and…Sharknado?
Thank you so much for having me on the blog today! It’s always been one of my favorite book tour stops. I feel right at home. Hope you don’t mind if I kick up my feet and make myself a cup of coffee!
Today, I’m going to talk about Sharknado 2, because umm….YES! How could I not? I finished watching and couldn’t believe I’d just sat on my couch for the last two hours and watched sharks leaping up staircases WHILE ON FIRE. I watched sharks fly through the air with the greatest of ease.
It made me think about suspension of disbelief.
As a paranormal romance author, I think about it a lot, actually.
Suspension of disbelief is the idea that you can look beyond fantastical elements of a story, as long as there is human emotion and truth at its core. I can believe sharks are going to fly out of tornadoes and attack New York City, for example, but if the Statue of Liberty is portrayed differently, I’m going to have a problem with the film. Yes, I can believe there are storms that are going to fling sharks about the city. But if something I know to be true is skewed, I’m lost as a viewer and pulled out of the story.
It’s a funny thing, but it’s true.
How many of you felt disconnected from Twilight because “Vampires don’t sparkle!” Yeah, you’re right. But vampires don’t exist at all. If you can believe in vampires for the length of two hours, why is it so hard to believe they could sparkle?
You can suspend disbelief to a certain point. That’s why.
In So I Married a Werewolf, I ask the reader to believe there is a secret society of werewolves living in Seattle. I ask the reader to stretch the limits of their imagination and believe every werewolf has one mate they are fated to spend the rest of their lives with. Did I mention werewolves live up to a thousand years? They do. They’re also stronger and faster than the average human. Two bites from a wolf on two different pulse points can turn a non-shifter into a werewolf, though the werewolves in Seattle are civilized. There are rarely cases of non-shifters being turned when they’re not in a committed, loving relationship with a shifter.
If you’re a paranormal romance reader you’re probably on board. Those details weren’t so extreme, right? Not compared to some of the worlds that’ve been created recently.
But I’ve only explored the fanatical elements of So I Married a Werewolf. At the root of the story, I’m asking the reader to believe in two friends who wind up lovers. I’m asking you to believe in a woman who’s a little overweight, a lot self-conscious, and totally in love with her hottie next door neighbor. I’m asking you to believe that they strike up a marriage bargain to help each other out of a bind. They’re not perfect. They bicker and get on each other’s nerves. He’s possessive and she’s stubborn. They’re also absolutely perfect for each other, even though he doesn’t want to admit it at first.
So I’m not really asking for much. Not really. No sharks flinging through the air. No tornadoes gathering over Manhattan. I’m simply asking for readers to believe in happy ever after, even if that comes with fur and fangs.

Carter Griffin, enforcing officer for the Seattle Wolf Pack, has a problem. He's been offered the promotion of his dreams…if he can find a wife to prove he's over his playboy ways. But Carter's already walked the matrimonial road and bought the stinkin' T-shirt. Besides, a werewolf only gets one fated mate. Been there, done that.
All werewolf dog trainer Faith Hamilton wants to do is earn enough green stuff to put her younger brother through college. Okay, okay, so she also totally wants Carter, her sexy next-door neighbor, to look at her as more than a friend. It's too bad size 12 and plain isn't his type. At all.
The two friends strike a deal to help one another out. They must face a variety of challenges from a psycho ex-girlfriend to a Yorkie with a shoe fetish...and that pesky problem of only having one-fated mate in a lifetime. Will a relationship ruin their friendship…or spark a love neither anticipated?
