Guest Blog + Giveaway: Through Her Eyes by Deborah Camp

UFI welcomes Author Deborah Camp. Thanks for Joining us!!

Bad, Bad Boy! Yum!
My first ever crush was on a bad boy. James Cagney. Yeah, the actor who is dead. I think I loved him because he reminded me of my dad – and most girls have their first big crush on their dads, right? Also, Cagney often played a bad boy with a big heart that he managed to hide – except from a certain persistent dame! Ah, romance!
I continued to be a sucker for a bad boy, falling head over heels for a boy in grade school, who took a paddling with a smirk. Loved that guy! My first kiss was bestowed by a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He made my toes curl, he was so baaaad! In college, I fell for a bad boy with a big heart and I still have a soft spot for him when I think back on his mischievous smirk and cocky walk.
My deepest love was for a bad boy who is 8 years my senior. He played musical beds with girls when I first met him. I was a virgin and he kept telling himself to stay away from me because I was too young, too green, and way too much trouble. Well, we all know how that turned out, don’t we? He was my “first” and no one was ever surpassed him. I learned that there was a reason he had a line of girls willing to share the sheets with him. He ruined me for other men, the rake! But I managed to win his heart.
Naturally, when I create a hero he must have a bad boy persona. He’s just no fun if he isn’t a little (or a lot!) dangerous and flawed in some way. I also like the “misunderstood hero” like Mr. Darcy in “Pride and Prejudice.”
The hero in my Mind’s Eye series is a classic bad boy hero and he is – if I say so myself – deliciously bad in the best sense of that word. Levi Wolfe springs from a troubled youth and launches himself into a destructive period as a young man to emerge with “No Trespassing” signs posted all over him, especially on his heart. He’s a gifted psychic and self-made millionaire, but he has never known unconditional love. Into his life walked Trudy Tucker, also a talented psychic, who has done a head and heart trip on Levi. He’s changing for the good – but he’s still bad.
I think what I love about bad boys is their vulnerability. They can take care of themselves. Often, there hasn’t been anyone around they could trust to protect, love, and guide them as they grew from boys to men. Or they went down the wrong path in their youth, disappointed people who loved them, and then felt like they couldn’t make enough amends when they finally regained their footing on the right path.
Levi is one of those walking wounded who feels that he can’t trust people with his deepest feelings and that he’s damaged goods. Women look at him and swoon because he’s a gorgeous specimen of manhood, but they don’t look past his beauty to see the sad beast crouching within his heart. Trudy sees him – all of him – and she still loves him. And that both fascinates and terrifies Levi.
In “Through Her Eyes” there is danger without – a monstrous serial killer – and danger within – explosive desire and tender love between two people who have learned to guard their hearts. Add a dash of paranormal as the two psychics use their incredible gifts to track down a murdering psychopath and you have a truly badass book!
Mr. Cagney, I think, would be proud.

Excerpt:

“So, tell me about your experience,” Trudy said, sitting next to Levi.
“It was strange. Very strange. I was contacted – during a business meeting, mind you – by the dead son of the new contractor I was speaking with in my office. This kid – a salvage yard murder victim – popped into my head and started yelling at me. I tried to shut him out, but I couldn’t. I had to actually stop the damned meeting and tell the man that his deceased son was demanding an audience. Gonzo thought I’d lost my noodle.”
“Good Lord!” She covered her parted lips with her hand. “I’d say that was a heck of a coincidence, but . . .it seems to be so much more than that.”
“Yeah, right.” He sat back and drummed his fingers on the table for a few seconds. “Anyway, the kid – Clayton Nelson – was hitchhiking in New Orleans when a guy in a pickup stopped for him. He couldn’t see much of the man’s face because he wore a ball cap and sunglasses. He had a mustache that looked fake to me. He used the ploy of something being wrong with his truck to get the kid to look under the hood and then he knocked him out with a blow to the head. Clay came to in a basement, his wrists and ankles bound with plastic ties and chains.” He shuttered his gaze from her. “That’s where he was murdered.” A few seconds ticked by before his lashes lifted to reveal his dark blue eyes that never missed much. “You’ve been in contact with the murderer already, haven’t you?”
Her heart jolted. He was uncanny. “I was in contact with someone who’s warped. I don’t know if it was the salvage yard killer.”
“Was he murdering someone?”
“Something. A cat.”
Levi’s upper lip lifted in disgust. “Jesus.”
“Yeah. He was practicing, I think.” She shuddered and blocked out the memory.
“The kid in my head showed me a compass and pointed to the N on it.”
She gasped at the reference. “Your true north?”
“Bingo. His way of telling me that you were already part of this.”
She reached for her glass of juice. They must be destined to examine this case. How else could she explain what happened to Levi and what she’d already experienced?

Guest Blog: Dark Experiments by Lana Campbell

UFI welcomes Author  Lana Campbell. Thanks for Joining us!!

Hi. My name is Tiffany Jane Peebles and you won't believe what happened to me. I came down sick with what I thought was the flu. My good friend Dr. Christian La Mond, who by the way I've had a major crush on for years, came by to see me. He seemed to think my flu bug was series so I let him take me to the hospital. Whatever made me sick really had me in it's clutches and I passed out. I woke up not knowing how long I'd been out, what happened to me or if I even had the flu at all. Christian was there and you want to know what he told me? He said I'd been poisoned with arsenic and I'd about died, but he said he did something radical which saved my life. I was grateful until he told me what he'd done. And you'll never believe what he did! The no good scoundrel turned me into a vampire!

Excerpt:

Nathan’s men rushed inside, Christian at their heels. He flipped up his sunglasses and looked about the inky darkness of a huge garage, plenty luminous for vampire eyes. Another standard door led to the belly of the building in the far right corner. He headed toward it, behind Nathan’s six men. Asa, Dominic and Nathan took up the rear, single file behind him.
At this point most everyone inside had surely heard the door come down. Christian needed to alert Tiffany and make her ready for whatever transpired once they emerged into the building’s interior.
We’re here. Get ready. Say nothing and stay calm. I’ll be there before you know it.
You’re here? Thank God, Christian.
Are you alone?
Yeah, I’m still alone and tied down to this damned bed. My heart is about to beat out of my chest. That’s my only tell, but no one except a vampire could here it.
I’ll hear it soon enough and it will be music to my ears.
Be careful.
You too.
Two of Nathan’s men took the battering ram to the interior door. Once it was relieved of it’s hinges, Christian rushed inside behind four of Nathan’s men. He expected to be met by the very least the brother armed to defend his turf, but instead two young thin vampire girls with hideously gray skin and gaunt features stood in a long hall just out a doorway to his right. The scent of chili wafted from the room, and Christian assumed it to be a kitchen.
The two girls appeared terrified, frozen in place, eyes wide and flitting from one armed man to another.
“Hands in the air!” one of the humans ordered.
They instantly obeyed.
Christian raised the barrel of his gun toward the ceiling. These poor little things were no threat. “Are you here by choice?” he asked them.
Both shook their heads, still wearing petrified expressions.
“Take us to the four women they brought here three days ago,” he demanded.
Just then a man walked out the doorway, hands in the air. Christian saw a holstered gun on his hip. The others must have too. Every man took aim on him with their weapons.
“Get down! Face down on the floor. Hands behind your head!” two of the human men yelled.
He did their bidding without a word. Seconds later he was swarmed by three humans, stripped of his gun and handcuffed.
Christian glanced at Asa who stared at the two frightened vampire girls with pity. He felt the same emotion himself, but he needed them to lead him to Tiffany and the others.
“Where are the women?” he asked again with less rancor.
The one closest to them finally answered. “D-down this hallway, take a left and you’ll find them in the curtained cubicles.”
Christian wanted to bolt in the direction they’d indicated, but he held back, glanced at Asa then behind him at Nathan, Dominic and Dimitri. They all wore an expression similar to what was on his mind. This was just too damned easy.
“Are you Terry, Charla’s brother?” Christian asked, stepping up to the head of the prone man who craned his head to glare up at him with equal doses of hate and spite.
“How do you know my name?”
“Never mind that. Get up and lead us to the women.” Christian yanked him up and onto his feet so fast, he’d probably dislocated his shoulder. A harsh grunt of pain said he was correct, but he didn’t care. This man was part of this kidnapping and drugging ring. He deserved a bullet between the eyes, but right now he’d serve just fine as a hostage.
The young sickly girls did not deserve such treatment. “Dominic, Dimitri, could you escort these young ladies out of the building? That is if you want to leave. We’ll make sure you get home, back to your lives, families, whatever.”
Both shook their heads adamantly and the two men corralled them around the small posse in the entryway then out of the building.
Christian shoved the barrel of his gun against the man’s spine. “Lead us to them now.”
Terry, craned his head back and gave him a look of disgust. “I’ll lead you right to them, vampire, but it won’t do you any good. By now they’re all on their way out. I’m sorry about that. I really am. I liked that one with the mouth.”
“Tiffany.”
“Yeah. That’d be the one.”
“You’d better qualify that comment and quick if you want to live. Where are they being taken?”
“I couldn’t answer that, but maybe you can. Where do vampires go when they die?”

Review: Wildfire by Ilona Andrews

Wildfire
Release Date: July 25, 2017
Publisher: Avon
Hidden Legacy Book #3
ISBN:  0062289276
ISBN13: 9780062289278
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Publisher

Just when Nevada Baylor has finally come to accept the depths of her magical powers, she also realizes she’s fallen in love. Connor “Mad” Rogan is in many ways her equal when it comes to magic, but she’s completely out of her elements when it comes to her feelings for him. To make matters more complicated, an old flame comes back into Rogan’s life…

Rogan knows there’s nothing between him and his ex-fiance, Rynda Sherwood. But as Nevada begins to learn more about her past, her power, and her potential future, he knows she will be faced with choices she never dreamed of and the promise of a life spent without him.

As Nevada and Rogan race to discover the whereabouts of Rynda’s kidnapped husband and are forced to confront Nevada’s grandmother, who may or may not have evil motives, these two people must decide if they can trust in each other or allow everything to go up in smoke.

From beginning to end, WILDFIRE kept me interested. The characters are well developed, the storyline is complex, and the romance between Nevada and Rogan is both swoon-worthy and real.

There are a few big things that happen in WILDFIRE. Nevada's grandma finally arrives and Nevada and her family apply to become their own house. I had a lot of thoughts about how that part of the story would go and it totally surprised me at every step. Rogan's ex-girlfriend's husband—that's a mouthful— goes missing and Rynda hires Nevada to find him. Boy was that an interesting turn of events. I really loved how everything that was involved in that part of the storyline was dealt with.

Now for the romance. Nevada and Rogan are finally on the same page about wanting a relationship and it is FANTASTIC. They are quite the duo and are so fun to read about. There were jealousies and a few squabbles, but they handled everything like pros.

I have to admit that the series doesn't feel over for me. I still feel like there is a lot of story left to tell and Ilona Andrews has given us hope that there might be at least one more book coming to us in the Hidden Legacy series http://www.ilona-andrews.com/all-the-answers/. Fingers—and toes—crossed because I NEED more.

I gave it 5/5 stars

Promo + Giveaway: Never Dare a Dragon by Ashlyn Chase

Never Dare a Dragon
Boston Dragons #3
Amazon  BN  iBooks  BAM

Third in Ashlyn Chase’s light paranormal romance series featuring hot dragon shifters. No one would believe that lovely Lt. Kristine Scott of the NY Fire Department is an actual dragon, but there’s no denying the flames that ignite when she meets firefighting phoenix shifter Jayce Fierro.

One Boston Phoenix + One New York Dragon = Scorching Heat

You think it’s tough being a dragon? It’s a piece of cake compared to being a phoenix shifter. Dragon shifters just have to worry about accidentally setting their stuff (or a loved one) on fire. A phoenix can rise from the ashes, but then they have to start over…as if growing up once wasn’t tough enough..

Meet Lt. Jayce Fierro of the Boston Fire Department, and Kristine Scott of the FDNY. A long distance relationship could never work—especially not with the secrets they’re keeping. But when Kristine lands herself in a blaze of trouble, she’s in no position to turn down Jayce’s help. Even if it means letting down their guards…and giving in to their sizzling attraction.

Excerpt #1:

The rest of the dinner went well. In fact, Kristine was surprised by how well it was going. She hadn’t dated a guy like Jayce in a long time. Their connection seemed to be almost instantaneous. It was just too bad he was a firefighter—and lived three hours away as the Acela train flies. Actually, a quick plane ride would reduce the commute to only an hour and a half, but the hassle and time it took to go through security would make the trip even longer.
Walking down the wide sidewalks of Times Square, hand in hand, sure made her feel as if the trip might be worth the hassle. His hand was warm and rough. For once she wasn’t concerned that hers were the same way. No hand cream could stand up to a firefighters’ routine. Wet gloves, rough weather, unbearable heat… All of that detracted from the soft, supple skin she longed for.
They had decided over dinner to visit the top of the Empire State Building. Jayce had never been there before, and Kristine had only visited with friends—never a date. It was supposed to be romantic. She’d never understood why. Probably because her cynical ex-boyfriend thought it was hokey. As she glanced over at Jayce, he glanced back, and they smiled. One thing she wasn’t seeing in him was a city dweller’s pessimism. Its absence was a refreshing change.
Eventually, they arrived at their destination, and as luck—or the stars aligning at the right moment—would have it, they stepped into an elevator with no one right behind them. The doors whooshed closed while they were still alone.
She spun toward Jayce with a hand over her mouth. “I guess that wasn’t very nice of me. I probably should have waited.”
He stepped right into her space. “I’m glad you didn’t.”
As the elevator began to ascend, he leaned in and captured her mouth with his firm lips. She looped her arms around his neck, and he pulled her close. She immediately opened her mouth, and their tongues found each other and swirled together. Kristine wasn’t at all sure her light-headed feeling was due to the elevator traveling so fast. Unfortunately, she felt as if she were falling instead.
Don’t think about it. Whatever happens happens… She seemed to have found a new mantra. She heard the ding of the elevator doors opening, and they were greeted by chuckles and a wolf whistle.
“Yeah, yeah…” Jayce said, but he was grinning and holding Kristine’s hand as they made their way off the elevator.
When they spotted a space at the building’s edge that was fairly deserted, they walked over to it with no hesitation.
“You’re not afraid of heights, I guess…” Jayce said to her.
She laughed. “I’d be in deep trouble if I were.” Not only was she a firefighter in a company that specialized in high-rises, but she was a full-fledged, fire-breathing, wing-soaring dragon. She could hover at this height and enjoy the view.
Speaking of enjoying the view…
Jayce turned his back on the dazzling city lights and kissed her knuckles as he stared into her eyes. She felt as if her insides were melting. A deep shimmer in his eyes must have been reflecting the lights. Or not. His eyes seemed to glow for a moment, and then he quickly turned back toward the city.
She took her first good look at the city lights as well. Dear Lord. At last she realized why people thought this place was romantic. At night, so many lights against the velvet black sky were more beautiful than Christmas. Some even seemed to twinkle like stars. Below, white headlights and red taillights trailed through the landscape, but the sounds of the city were far away.
A chilly breeze ruffled her hair. Jayce enveloped her in a side hug. If she felt a chill, it was forgotten in favor of his warm, strong body alongside hers. Everywhere they touched, merging heat radiated through her. Wow. How she’d missed this! Or had she ever had this feeling?
Good Lord, Kristine… Get ahold of yourself!
“So, Jayce… What do you think of the view from up here?”
He turned her toward him and said, “I think the view right in front of me is as beautiful as it gets.” Leaning in, he delivered another toe-curling kiss, and she realized she was a goner.

Ashlyn Chase has been a registered nurse for 20 years. During those years, she wrote articles for professional journals and a thesis, but eventually, thank goodness, discovered the joy and freedom of writing fiction.

Ashlyn considers herself lucky. Her degree in behavioral sciences is a combination of psychology and sociology, so she has worked with and studied people most of her life. She never has to write out exhaustive character sketches to understand her characters or predict how they will behave. That doesn't mean they don't surprise her. Sometimes they take her on grand unexpected journeys. For her, it gives "character driven novels" a whole new meaning.

Ashlyn has learned to go with the flow. To enjoy the journey is not only one of her writing goals, but also a challenge in life so she tries to follow where the story takes her. As such, she has lived in 17 different places over the years. At last, she's all settled down and comfy in New England.

Is there a grand design or do we decide our own fates? Perhaps if the powers-that-be have a plot, then they also give us the right to revise it. Ashlyn has certainly made detours on her path, but she thinks she's better for it. She's having fun at any rate and hopes that if she enjoys the journey, so will those around her—including her readers.

Guest Blog: Dead and Delicious by Tara West

UFI welcomes Author Tara West. Thanks for Joining us!!

Ash MacLeod has to be good if she wants to trade up her dump in purgatory for a high rise in heaven. If only she wasn’t tempted by a sexy grim reaper in tight denim…
Greetings from the thirteenth level of purgatory. Thanks to Urban Fantasy Investigations for hosting me. I’m Ash MacLeod, the Supernatural Intervention Agency’s newest badass ghoster. Tara West is busy promoting the fifth Eternally Yours novel, Dead and Delicious, featuring yours truly, so I told her I’d welcome you all to her very twisted and unconventional series about heaven, hell, and all the levels in-between.
You’re probably wondering how I ended up dead. Let’s just say I had a little accident with a faulty blow-dryer while getting ready for a blind date. I was in for quite a shock (pun intended) when I woke up and discovered the panty-melting stud at my door wasn’t my date, but Aedan O’Connor, the grim reaper sent to collect my soul. The misunderstanding could’ve happened to anyone, so it wasn’t my fault we engaged in a little kissing and groping while hovering over my dead body. I won’t bore you with all the details. Again, totally not my fault.
After Aedan dropped me off at The Penthouse, aka Heaven, I spent one glorious night feasting on cheesecake while my personal sexy valet catered to my every whim. Yes, my every whim. Then I woke up to discover there’d been a mistake, and I was supposed to be on the bottom level of purgatory. Luckily, Aedan pulled some strings and got me on purgatory’s top floor, the least crappy level—did I mention my ancient refrigerator, shag carpet, and slowww Internet? By the way, here’s an afterlife tip: When a guy with a bloody hammer lodged in his head takes you on a date, don’t order your steak rare.
Purgatory isn’t all that bad. My childhood best buddy, my black Lab Jack, somehow found his way back to me. Also, things between Aedan and me are getting pretty hot and heavy. Who would’ve thought I’d have to die to discover sex was better than chocolate? Plus, I’ve got this cool new ghosting job, thanks to my ability to project my aura thirteen levels away. The job comes with a few occupational hazards, namely demons want to burn my eyes out, but every career has its downsides.
Anyway, Tara is really excited about her newest book release. It’s only 2.99 for a limited time. Price goes up to 3.99 after today. If you haven’t read the series yet, you don’t need to start with book one, but I promise lots of panty melting moments if you do. Tara has generously offered to give her readers Divine and Dateless, Eternally Yours Book One, as a free download. Get ready to squee your pants with laughter. Thanks for stopping by, and remember, good girls go to heaven, but bad girls go all the way.

Dead and Delicious
Eternally Yours #5
Two zombies and one skeleton on a road trip to Vegas to kill a witch, stop an apocalypse, and rescue their friends from the belly of a shadow dragon.

Nothing weird about that.

Five things I learned while being a fallen angel zombie:
1. Duct tape works better than embalming.
2. Alopecia is not my favorite hairstyle.
3. Fried demons smell like bacon.
4. This brain breath is affecting my love life.
5. Nothing ruins a honeymoon like an apocalypse.

Excerpt #1:

Our elevator had dropped us off smack in the middle of what could have only been described as an undead battlefield. We were in an old cemetery shrouded in a thin mist and faintly illuminated by moonlight. Gravesites had been unearthed and tombstones turned to rubble while grims and ghosters decapitated demonic creatures that came at them from all sides. And was it just me, or was it uncommonly hot for early spring in Seattle?
Margo Styles, a ghoster on the elite Alpha Squad, who looked like a Barbie and screamed like a banshee, shoved a big-ass machete into my arms. “Arm yourself.” She drew in a deep breath before driving a hatchet into some pale creature’s skull.
My stomach roiled when his brain exploded in a fountain of green ooze, splattering Margo’s face. I wasn’t crazy about Margo, and I’d wanted to dump a plate of caviar over her snooty head a time or two, but I wouldn’t wish a mouthful of demon sludge on my worst enemy.
Aedan pushed me behind him, slicing off a demon’s head before I had a chance to blink. The rest of the ghosters on my squad somehow found weapons and were joining in the action. I spun in a slow circle, nearly dropping the heavy machete on my foot. I could barely lift it. How the hell was I supposed to cut off heads with it? All while wearing a wedding gown and heels.
I ducked under Aedan’s arm as he decapitated a demon with spikes coming out of his skull. “Margo, what is happening?” I hollered, unable to keep the shrill rattle out of my voice.
“I don’t know,” she said between grunts, driving her blade into a scaly creature’s torso, “but all hell’s broke loose.”
A tall shadow fell over us, and I peered up at the commander of the ghosting squadrons. Shadow, a formidable ghoster, was made even creepier by me knowing he’d once been controlled by a powerful demon.
“Shadow,” I cried. “Please tell me what’s happening.”
“Delta squad.” He frowned at me, waving to Sarge and Aedan. “You take the west end. Whatever you do, do not let them leave the cemetery.” He handed Sarge and Aedan walkie-talkies.
So like a man to talk over the woman, but now wasn’t the time to get into a sexism debate. I reminded myself Shadow had died 150 years ago, back when women were still swooning from tight corsets and battery-operated dildos hadn’t been invented yet, so we kind of had to take shit from men.
I shrieked when a demon head catapulted past me, spewing blood all over my wedding gown. Dammit! Now I was pissed! I dropped the machete and yanked a blade out of a demon’s back, shook off the blood, and marched alongside my husband. So much for my white wedding. Guess that was my karma for trying to pass as a virgin.
