Review: City of War by Debbie Cassidy (@amoscassidy)

City of War
Release Date: November 27, 2018
Publisher: Self-Published
ASIN:  B07GYSC8V6
Genre: Reverse Harem
Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

Triumph always comes at a price, but paying it is a bitch.

With the Voice finally by her side Wila must take the final steps to claiming back what is rightfully hers--a kingdom, a man, and possibly a throne. Now, if only the obstacles in her path would make nice and step out of the way.

The Triumph Games are looming, and only the Arcana Institute can help her forge the final path she needs to liberate her Kindred and all the people trapped under Elora's false rule.

All the pieces are almost in place. All the planning is ready to come to fruition, but hurdles have away of springing up at the last minute, and a trip right now could be fatal.

War may be coming, whether Wila wants it, or not...

A kick-ass urban fantasy with a slow burn Whychoose romance

CITY OF WAR tied the Chronicles of Acana series up in a pretty little bow.

CITY OF WAR was fast paced with a nice battle that ended the major conflict of the series. I enjoyed the twists and revelations the last book brought forth.

It's a good thing that this series was geared more towards urban fantasy than reverse harem because the romance really didn't do much for me.  It's not that I didn't like the guys, it's that the romance portions of the book just didn't make me swoon. And if I'm being honest. I found the romantic relationship between Wila and Sebastian kinda creepy. I mean, they were born together like twins—and I know they technically aren't— and he called Willa's mom mother. It just felt icky to me and I didn't get it and definitely wasn't feeling it.

I wish we would have gotten more from the epilogue. We see that the cast of characters got their happily ever after, but I still kinda wanted to see more of how they got there. Wanting more = a win in my book.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Dragonshadow
Heartstone #2
Amazon  |  Barnes Noble  |  Kobo  |  iBooks

The author of Heartstone once again infuses elements of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with her own brand of magic in this addictive fantasy that brings back sparring lovers Aliza and Alastair: fierce warriors who match wits, charm, and swords as they fight an epic war to save their world.

The Battle of North Fields is over—or so Aliza Bentaine, now a Daired, fervently wants to believe. But rumors are spreading of an unseen monster ravaging the isolated Castle Selwyn on the northern border of the kingdom. When she and Alastair are summoned from their honeymoon by the mysterious Lord Selwyn, they must travel with their dragon Akarra through the Tekari-infested Old Wilds of Arle to answer his call.

And they are not alone on this treacherous journey. Shadowing the dragonriders is an ancient evil, a harbinger of a dark danger of which the Worm was only a foretaste. And soon Aliza realizes the terrible truth: the real war is only beginning.

Genre: Fantasy

Five hundred years ago, magi created a weapon they couldn’t control. An infestation that ate magic—and anything else it came into contact with. Enemies and allies were equally filling.

Only an elite team of non-magical humans, known as sweepers, can defuse and dispose of infestations before they spread. Most die before they finish training.

Laura, a new team member, has stayed alive longer than most. Now, she’s the last—and only—sweeper standing between the city and a massive infestation.

CITY OF BROKEN MAGIC was.....confusing.

I was pretty excited about CITY OF BROKEN MAGIC when I read the blurb, but I just couldn't get into the story. I hate to say it, but I skimmed a lot of the book after the first half. The world was actually pretty neat, I just couldn't stay in the zone and got bored while reading.

I actually really liked the characters. Clae was brusque, but interesting. I hated how things ended with him. Laura was strongly built and I liked her right off the bat. The side characters were also easy to like.

I'm not really sure where CITY OF BROKEN MAGIC went wrong. There was a lot of information given and I think I just got lost in all of it. I also didn't feel like the plot was strong enough to carry everything through to the end.

I won't read more from this series, but I didn't totally hate what I read.

I gave it 2.5/5 stars

Review: The Queen's Wing by Jessica Thorne (@JessThorneBooks, @bookouture)

The Queen's Wing
Release Date: November 21, 2018
Publisher: Bookouture
ASIN: B07GRVMVHN
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

‘I was born to fly,’ I told my brothers. But it isn’t true. I was born to be a pawn in the great game of royal houses, married to someone – anyone – my family deems suitable. If I’m lucky, he’ll be my own age and bearable. If I’m very lucky, he’ll be someone who understands my need to fight, and to fly...

Bel, born to nobility, would do anything to spend her days alongside her brothers – soaring through the heavens in her beloved flyer. She’s faster than any of them, but she knows her days in the skies are numbered.

When a surprise attack on the palace lands Bel’s father on the throne, her life is forever changed. In order to secure her father’s empire, Bel must travel to a distant land to marry the recently widowed young ruler, Conleith.

But Bel’s new home is less than welcoming: compared to the refined ladies at court, Bel seems like a wild woman, and assassination attempts, treason and mystery threaten her at every turn. With a growing attraction to Con, her life is further complicated by the attentive leader of her bodyguards – a warrior called Shae whom she has loved since childhood…

A heart-stoppingly magical new novel that will keep you turning the pages. Perfect for fans of The Selection, Bella Forrest and Sarah J. Maas.

THE QUEEN'S WING had me wanting more pretty quickly upon starting to read it.

I enjoyed Bel from the get-go. She has a strong personality. Her determination and strength really drew me to her. She was willing to do what was expected of her, but she was still determined to be her in the end.

The romance wasn't out of this world. There is a bit of a love triangle that puts a damper on some things. Bel and Shae have known each other forever and I'm sure could have had a great romance if they were allowed too, but I felt like I could have done without their feelings for each other getting in the way. I felt like Bel and Con had a great connection when they allowed themselves to actually enjoy and understand each other. I wish they could have come together a lot sooner than they did.

The world was super interesting and I enjoyed the action involved in THE QUEEN'S WING. I enjoyed THE QUEEN'S WING and I already have book two, THE STONE'S HEART on my wishlist—even though it looks like we have some different main characters.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Guest Blog: Mostly Innocent by J.M. Jinks (@AuthorJMJinks, @champagnebooks, @RoxanneRhoads)

UFI welcomes Author J.M. Jinks. Thanks for Joining us!!

Dear readers,

I am J.M. Jinks, the author of Mostly Innocent, A Powers That Be Novel #1. Mostly Innocent is an urban fantasy novel. What makes an urban fantasy unique versus a high fantasy, is that it is set in the real world. Mostly Innocent is set in Palm Springs, California. Being a  Southern California native, my love and adoration for  all things California definitely shines in the book. Growing up, I loved to visit Palm Springs! But as an adult I love it even more.

Palm Springs has a unique vibrancy that makes it such an eccentric, quirky city. Known for its drag bars, mid-century modern architecture, swimming pools, art galleries, and golf courses—it’s such a fun place. My husband and I love to make the drive out and have brunch there.

Layla loves Palm Springs because, being a succubus, she likes the heat. She blames her love all things hot on the demon inside of her—who came straight from the flaming depths of hell. Palm Springs is where Layla lives, but expect to visit a lot of the South Western US in the book. Layla goes to Coachella Valley, San Diego, and even Las Vegas.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Layla and follow her along the various cities in the book.

Meet Layla James, your typical smart and snarky chick—except for the whole succubus thing. After nearly a millennium on Earth, Layla’s settled down in a boring life in Palm Springs, until a smoking-hot hunter comes to arrest her for murder. But Layla knows the rules—she'd never kill someone and incite the wrath of The Powers That Be.

Elijah Daines is a hunter, maintaining the balance of good and evil in the mortal realm, his power stronger than any hunter she’s ever encountered. Plus, he’s a seriously sexy distraction. Too bad he’s accused her of a crime she didn't commit.

As the killer continues a murder spree that not only frames Layla but threatens to expose the existence of supernatural creatures to humans, Layla and Elijah team up to investigate. Hopefully, they can fight off their escalating attraction for each other long enough to exonerate her and stop the murder madness.

Excerpt:

He approached the counter. I, or maybe my succubus, decided on a whim I would not be intimidated by his power. I wasn’t sure where my sudden courage came from. He had to have felt my succubus signature. We weren’t a violent race when we controlled our urges. I’m Queen of Control over here. I’m sure he knows I won’t, hurt him. Right?
But why was he here? Something must have been wrong.
As I walked toward him, I got a better look. His dark hair was in slight disarray and his bright blue eyes scoured my face. He towered over me in every sense of the word.
He and Jolene should go back-to-back so I can get an accurate measure of his height.
I shook away my thoughts of him—it was obvious he came here on a mission. Greek god or not, he was still a hunter, and I—I was a product of evil, aka something he hunts.
“Succubus,” he growled. The one little word was filled with eons of unabashed hatred. The word vibrated through me. All hopes of him wanting a new bathroom paint color vanished. No, this visit wasn’t going to be pleasant, not at all.
Perhaps I could seduce him. Hell, he could do me right on the floor of aisle nine next to the light fixtures, if it kept him from killing me. I bit my lip. But…hunters weren’t typically susceptible to succubi charms. A failed attempt of Aprhodisia could earn more problems.
I released a breath. Some buried deep natural instinct rolled through me again. With that feeling, I decided to stand my ground. I looked him in the eyes, stood up straighter, and replied, “Hunter?”

Pirate's Passion
Release Date: November 12, 2018
Publisher: Entangled Amara
ASIN:  B07FSKJ7G6
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Publisher

Samuel Keegan used to man the wheel of the Sea Dog over 200 years ago, but these days he’s the front man of a southern rock band. Rum and women are plentiful, but his world is changing rapidly now that his crew is back together searching for the Holy Grail to break their curse. But the quest leads him to a historian with raven hair and a wicked smile. She holds all the answers, but she could also spell death for them all.

Dr. Charlotte Sinclair works for the Maritime Museum in Savannah, an expert on ancient pirate wrecks. When a government agent requests her help in a top-secret investigation, she discovers not only is the Holy Grail real, but the lead singer of her favorite band is actually the immortal pilot of the Sea Dog crew.

The search for the Grail opens some dark secrets better left hidden, and Charlotte's life might depend on one Pirate's Passion...

I enjoyed PIRATES' PASSION, but I don't have a whole lot to say about it.

The characters were enjoyable. We met all but Charlotte in book 1 and got to know them a little better throughout PIRATES' PASSION. The romance was good. Keegan and Char had good chemistry. They had things they had to overcome, but worked well as a couple.

I think the best parts of the book were when all the pirates were involved in the storyline. I enjoyed their bond and the way they work together. I  plan to read more from this series in the future.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Review: Unbreakable Bond by Jess Bryant (@Jess_Bry)

Unbreakable Bond
Author: Jess Bryant
Release Date: May 13, 2018
Publisher: Blue Lemon Press
ASIN:  B07D2H7RF3
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Author

Sometimes fate gets it all wrong.

Zoey Kent has lived with that fact ever since she turned eighteen and learned that the man she loved could never be hers. He’s a born shifter, a wolf, and she’s a mere human. Fate doesn’t care if on paper they’re a perfect pair. She isn’t his fated mate and she’s resigned herself to the knowledge that someday, she’ll have to watch Michael mate with another. It’s never crossed her mind that there might be someone else out there for her, that she would be the one to mate another, to choose another over everything she’s ever known or wanted.

Sometimes fate gets it all right.

Rafe Hudson left his pack behind years ago. Physically and mentally scarred from an attack that left his parents and twin dead, he walked away from his responsibilities as Alpha. He never intended to return but lone wolf or not, he can’t leave Michael open to an attack he’s learned is coming for his only brother. What he didn’t know was that going home would mean scenting his mate, the one person in the world that could make him whole again, that could give him everything he thought he’d lost. His pack, his home and his family.

But fate always has a plan.

There’s no way Michael’s brother is her future, is there? Just like there’s no way that the girl his brother has loved since they were kids, was always meant to be his, right?

Only fate knows why they were brought together but there is one thing for sure, the sparks between Zoey and Rafe are undeniable. The bond between them is unbreakable. And together… they’ll change the face of the pack forever.

It's not always easy to pull off insta-love, but Jess Bryant did a good job of making it believable.

The best part of UNBREAKABLE BOND was that I really WANTED Zoey and Rafe to have their happily ever after. It was very easy to like both of the main characters and root for them to work out. I enjoyed witnessing their bond grow and the romance was super hot, so be ready for some steamy scenes.

Now for a few not so awesome things. UNBREAKABLE BOND was a solid 4 for about 60% of the story, but then a few things started to stick out. For one, Raf seemed to become a little bit of a whiny butt head for a bit and it was a total turn off for me. There is alpha male protectiveness, but this was a bit much at a few points. The other thing was the over use of terms of endearment. My mate. My heart. My soul. My life. Love of my life. My fate. My man. My woman.. OK I might be exaggerating a little bit, but there were many instances where 3-4 of these worlds would be used back to back in the same sentence—multiple times—in a 3 page span. It became annoying and ruined the flow of quite a few scenes.

After finishing UNBREAKABLE BOND I wanted to know what would happen next. I immediately dove into Michael's story, UNBELIEVABLE FAITH.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: Circle of Flames by Jane S. Morrissey (@janesmorrissey, @RoxanneRhoads, @SoulMatePublish)

UFI welcomes Author Jane S. Morrissey. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

So many things! One of them is that I’ve traveled quite a lot in life and lived all over the world which is one of the reasons I wanted this series to be a more global experience.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

At the moment, I have a two-year old at home, so “down time” seems like a thing of the past. It’s okay thought because I have a full-time job I thoroughly enjoy, I somehow manage to carve out time to write, and love spending time with my child. Going through the world at the pace of a 2-year old forces me to slow down and take in the world around me in a different way.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

When I first started writing, I realized what I’d been missing in my life. It was a little like starting a meditation practice for me – which I have also tried on and off over the years. Everything settles down when I was writing and I felt a freedom I’d never experienced. Life is easier and makes more sense when I’m writing.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

My life before having a child, was to wake up early to write every morning for an hour or two before work. Now it all depends on how much sleep I get and how early the house is hopping. It has forced me to be more adaptive and squeeze my writing in where I can. I’m hoping to be able to return to more of a routine in the years to come, but for the moment – this is one of my challenges. It gives me lots of good excuses to explain away writer’s block!

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

My very favorite book, which I re-read probably once a year, is Red Heart of Jade by Marjorie M. Liu.

he Red Heart of Jade: A Dirk & Steele Novel by [Liu, Marjorie M.]

How would you pitch Quytel Series to someone who has not heard of it before?

A globe-trotting, paranormal thriller. Each story is grounded in a romance set against the backdrop of several unfolding arcs that stretch into the realms beyond Earth.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Quytel Series is set in?

In the world of the Quytel, there are seven Circles, each by a defined geographic territory. The Quytel have psychic abilities and have been tasked with maintaining the balance of psychic power on the planet. They are the arm of justice for all others with supernatural abilities, shapeshifters, elementals, mages, and others who are mostly hidden and marginalized in the backdrop of our normal world.

Born with psychic abilities and branded with genetic markers, those who are chosen and survive a deadly initiation become Quytel. Three Judges, three Seekers, seven Warriors, and a Commander make up a Quytel Circle. Seven Circles are bound to specific geographic territories on Earth. Through near immortality, powerful psychic abilities, and an unbreakable bond that ties them together, they are the servants of justice.

Do you have a favorite scene in Circle of Flames?

I have several, and here is a sneak peak of one of them:

Sighing, even more tired of her own story than usual, she started up her front steps. Halfway up, she stopped, heart pounding at the sight of a large man sitting on the loveseat on her porch, half hidden by deep shadows.
She knew him. She was sure she’d never met him, but she knew him. His face kept flashing in her mind, sex and danger. Who was he?
“Rough night, Emma?” His deep voice said her name like a sigh on a warm summer breeze. Tingles of desire licked all over her body, settling low in her belly.
Emma’s heart pounded, sparks building into fire, while fear plucked the strings of her nerves like an out-of-tune banjo.
“Who are you?” She was a fool for not running straight back to her car and calling the police.
“My name is Darius.”
The name fit, another piece of the puzzle falling into place.
When he stood he was far taller than she’d expected, broader across the shoulders, with powerful arms and legs, clearly comfortable using his strength to intimidate. Well, she refused to be intimated by him. Fire swirled close, more under her control.
Darius walked to the top of the stairs, near enough that she caught the scent of sandalwood and moss. It teased her senses; tendrils of familiarity trickled along the edge of her awareness.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?
In each book, there is one character who stands out more than the rest and that I enjoy writing, but throughout the series, I would have to say my favorite is Mack. He is a strong secondary character in Circle of Dreams and Circle of Flames . . . the 3rd and 4th books in this series will be coming out in 2019 – and Mack will finally have his story told!

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

There is more to come in this series! Circle of the Pack and Circle of Time will be coming out in 2019 and the 5th book in the Quytel Series is in the works . . .

Quytel #2

Sent back to his homeland to investigate the disappearance of psychic children, Darius Curilian must face the haunting truths of his past. In a remote village, Darius and his team arrive too late to stop a kidnapping but discover a beautiful stranger who could hold the key to finding the missing children.

A self-defined loner, Emma Williams has always been different. Fire breathes in her soul and has set her apart from everyone her whole life. When she stumbles upon a child in danger, she falls into Darius’s unwilling arms and is pulled into the dark world of the Quytel as they fight for their lives.
Excerpt:

For her safety and ours, Darius reminded himself.
“Scotch?” Emma emerged from the kitchen with two tumblers half full of amber liquid. “I don’t know about you, but I could use a drink after the last couple of days.”
She’d changed into a comfortable looking pair of cotton drawstring pants and a spaghetti-strap tank, leaving a tempting part of her flat belly revealed. Padding into the room on bare feet, her dark, silk-red hair brushed her jawline and fell to her shoulders. His cock hardened.
He stood and crossed the narrow room, taking the glass she offered him. “Thank you.”
“Cheers.” She raised her glass and sat on the loveseat, tucking her feet under her. “So what now?”
“I should leave.” He didn’t move, feeling the weight of Sita’s vial in his pocket. He took a long drink of the scotch and savored the smoke on his tongue.
“Will I see you again?” Those lapis-lazuli eyes met his. They reminded him of Egyptian jewels watching, waiting, her pale skin illuminated by the soft, yellow glow filling the room.
“I’d like that.” He chased the implication of his statement with another swallow of scotch burning his throat. Just because he wouldn’t ever see her again didn’t mean he wouldn’t want to. He was dead certain one night with her would do nothing to quench his hunger.
