UFI welcomes MaryJanice Davidson Author of The Undead series. Thanks for Joining us!!
Welcome, MaryJanice!
Throughout your blog tour, we’ve learned a lot about your new anthology of
paranormal novellas, Undead and
Underwater. If there was a general message you wanted readers to take away
from the anthology, what would it be?
“Wasn’t it fun to take a break from whatever’s bugging you
and laugh for a little while?” That’s
all I ever want from a reader: for them
to have a good time.
We’d love to get to
know you a little better. In the intro to “Incomer,” you talk about one of your
pet peeves, mothers who yell at their children repetitively on the beach but
are too lazy to go after them. Can you talk about some of your other pet
peeves?
That all depends on how much time you have. Hours, or days? How much of your life-span are you willing to
devote to this interview? I’ll just hit
the biggies: people who say towards and amongst. How the scientist
is always the dumbest person in any horror movie. People who say “No offense, but...” and then
say something wildly offensive. People
who tell me they hate romance novels although they’ve never read one. Parents who ask, not tell: “Will you go to bed now? How about you go to bed now? I think it’s your bedtime, okay? Honey?
Okay?” Argh, argh, a thousand
times argh.
Do you have any unusual
quirks?
I definitely don’t think you’ve allotted enough of your life
span for this interview. I won’t even
get started on the quirk list. We’ll be
here for days. Weeks.
What are you working
on now?
I just signed a new contract with Berkley for two books set in an all-new world
where reincarnation is the norm. Ninety
percent of the world can access experience from their past lives (Insighters
are like super-psychologists who help them do that), but the ten percent who
can’t are called life blind and are pitied.
My heroine is an Insighter; my hero is life blind...and refuses to play
the role their society has decided is his.
And it’ll be time to start the next Undead book pretty soon.
Can’t wait!
Finally, what do you
think is the biggest issue facing writers today?
Well, there’s a lot of competition out there. Fifteen years ago, before Kindles and
Amazon’s self-pubbing branch and all the wonderful publishing options never
before available, there were fifty thousand books published every month. How can a writer make their work stand out
from the other 49,999? (I can’t even
imagine how many books come out a month now.)
And with Borders folding their tents, there’s less shelf space for
everyone. Internet or not, there are
plenty of readers who will only go to a brick-and-mortar bookstore. There will always be wonderful books; there
will always be writers who have wonderful worlds to build and share. Making your voice heard in all the
clamor...that’s the trick, I think. If
the reader can’t find you, you’re done.
What’s the future going to be like? MaryJanice gives readers her
thoughts and wraps up her tour tomorrow, March 15th, at suvudu.com!
