Promotional Post & Giveaway: Death's Servant by C.J. Ellisson

Death's Servant
VV Inn #0.5
Jonathan Winchester has clashed with his alpha one too many times. After another argument he leaves the Manitoba pack, his only home since the werewolf attack that changed his life. He returns to his home state of Virginia to start a new life free of pack politics. Jon finds work and meets a young waitress, Raine, who appears to be a lone werewolf, too.

As their relationship progresses, Jon’s embroiled in more intrigue than he bargained for and a danger bigger than he can handle. He's running scared until his own alpha tendencies surface, making him unable to leave the pretty werewolf’s problems behind. The young man is desperate to save Raine—even if his efforts may lead him straight to death.

Journey along in this first prequel novel involving the favorite characters from the bestselling V V Inn series. Written at reader demand, this stand-alone story explains how the beloved Jonathan came to serve the deadly redheaded vampire, Dria.
Chapter One

“Jon!” Romeo’s deep voice follows as I stride quickly down the hall. “Get back here.”

I round the top of the stairs and descend at full speed, skipping steps in my haste to leave. Anger pulses like a living beast beneath my skin. If I don’t get the hell out of here, my alpha and I will come to blows.

The urge to fight, to answer the call of my inner wolf, colors my vision, tinting the werewolf pack’s large home in a wash of red haze. Claws itch to descend through my clenched fists, and the brush of fur waiting to erupt tingles my skin.

“This is not over.” Romeo’s booming shout thunders through the house. “Get back here now, or don’t ever come back!”

This time he’s getting what he threatens. What’s so crazy about suggesting a support network for wolves? Why am I suddenly the object of scorn and ridicule? Is organizing packs somehow a threatening concept to our way of life?

A tiny voice inside whispers, Your suggestion of such a change goes against everything a werewolf pack stands for.

Could that be true? Would instilling communication among hundreds of Weres hurt us as a species?

I block the denials I’ve heard for months. Doesn’t make sense. Could Romeo’s resistance stem from something bigger? Should I listen to the gossip saying I’ve evolved into an alpha faster than anyone expected? There is only one male alpha per pack, not two; one mated pair deciding the fate of their wolves, and those who don’t agree must leave. Or fight for supremacy.

I barrel out the front door and sprint toward the detached garage, where a few of the single wolves have bedrooms in the space above the cars. I throw open the door, the heavy steel bouncing off the siding in my unchecked rage. I need to talk to Lori, my werewolf girlfriend in the pack. I’m ready to leave and want her with me.

My inner beast gnashes its teeth, ready for a challenge, eager to return and face the man who saved my life less than a year ago. Tamping down the temptation, I rush the inner stairs three at a time. The scent of half a dozen wolves lies heavy in the confined space, confusing the rational part of my mind struggling to remain in control.

I recall our past in an effort to still my raging desires—I owe this man my life. Romeo found me lost and afraid when I awoke in the hospital, uncertain of what I’d become. Elsa, his wife, sensed immediately I was different, discouraging her mate to allow me into their pack.  Romeo didn’t care. He recognized me for what I truly was—a scared college kid who didn’t know what the fuck happened to his well-ordered life.

When I reach the upper hall, I’m jolted out of my calming reverie by sounds of passion. I smile, wondering who Kotsana has lured to his waterbed now.

“That’s it, baby,” a familiar female voice coos softly. “You know I like it good and deep.”

The instant anger near the surface of my mind threatens to overwhelm me. I stop cold—leaning a hand on the wall, gasping to catch my breath—while my packmate screws my girlfriend beyond his shut bedroom door.

Guest Post & Giveaway: Blood Prophecy by Gabrielle Bisset

UFI welcomes Gabrielle Bisset Author of The Sons of Navarus Series. Thanks for Joining us!!

Thanks so much for having me here today at Urban Fantasies Investigations! Finally, after months of waiting, the big day comes tomorrow: Blood Prophecy, the fourth book in the Sons of Navarus series, will be released.

Here's the blurb for Blood Prophecy:
I am everything you fear. I am vampire.

As the two Sons chosen to decipher the Prophecy of Idolas, Ramiel and Thane journey to find the key to defeating the Archons. Together with Noele, a born vampire, they confront their fates as they fulfill their duty to their world. Along the way, they'll find love, but death and betrayal lurk in the shadows, threatening everything dear to them.

Descended from the gods and warriors all, each Son's loyalty will be tested. Every action has consequences, and the choices they make now seal their fates. Alliances as old as the vampire world itself are reforged, and the Sons' duty is clear. Stop the Archons. Or die trying.

Just about the halfway point in the series, Blood Prophecy is Ramiel's story. Born a Visigoth, he was made a slave to a wealthy Roman family until he rose up with his fellow barbarians against the Roman Empire in August 410. Shortly after, he was made vampire and his time on Earth changed. Now 1600 years later, he's one of the two Sons of Navarus responsible for deciphering the Prophecy of Idolas to prevent the Archons from taking over the vampire world.

Ramiel will be a very different character from the other Sons who've come before him. The first three Sons to have their stories told—Vasilije, Saint, and Terek—are unique in their own ways, but Ramiel's time as a slave colors everything he sees in his life, including his duty to his world. Readers will find that the way he deals with the events that confront him is very much because of his being a slave.

But he's not alone in his responsibilities. The other Son who must figure out the prophecy is Thane, and for every darkness and harsh reality Ramiel has faced, Thane has had a life many would dream of. Born the son of an English nobleman, he was made vampire by another nobleman and has lived comfortably throughout the years, much like his fellow Son, Vasilije.

Thanks so much for having me here to talk about Blood Prophecy. Come May 14, readers will be able to find it at all major booksellers. It's going to be a real turning point in the series.

I began writing years ago because I wanted to emulate the stories I’d loved. Now in an age that seems to glorify everything fast, I’m a bit of a relic. I believe that great things take time (you know–Rome wasn’t built in a day). I take my time as I write and edit as I go because after a decade of being an editor and English composition instructor I know of no other way. Much of the joy of writing for me comes in the choosing of the exact word that can deliver just what I want a character to express to affect the reader the most.

For me, books aren’t just narratives of this character did this, so this character did that, and therefore this occurred. They’re stories full of the bigger issues of life: love, hate, power, lust and sex, hopes and dreams. And these wondrous things all thinking and feeling beings experience are shown not through the telling of he did and she did, but through the slow unveiling of events and characters so the reader becomes a part of the story. As Stephen King has said, “Good books don’t give up all their secrets at once.”

The idea for my first book came to me in a dream. I know that seems almost cliched, but it did. I woke up one morning after having an extremely vivid dream and began to jot things down that I was able to remember. Days later, I had the first pages written and the ideas that I had dreamed about had become the characters in my first book. Those characters are the basis for the first series I’ve written, The Destined Ones Series, about a people called Aeveren who have lived side by side with humans since almost the beginning of recorded time. The first book in that series, Stolen Destiny, was published in June 2011.

I’m still working on The Destined Ones books, and I look forward to what my imagination has waiting for me next. The second book about Aeveren, Destiny Redeemed, was released in October 2011. I’ve finished the Victorian Erotic Romance Trilogy, three erotic novellas set in Victorian England. The first one, Vampire Dreams, is a paranormal erotic romance. The second novella, another erotic romance but an historical, Love’s Master, involves some light BDSM. The third novella, Masquerade, is a straight historical, no kink or paranormal but still a great story.

And now I’ve begun a new paranormal series called The Sons of Navarus series that begins with Blood Avenged. Anyone who read Vampire Dreams will remember Vasilije, Brandon’s sire. Blood Avenged is his story. The second book in the series, Blood Betrayed, was released in May 2012, and this fall 2012 the third book, Blood Spirit, was released. I’ve even reworked the original Vampire Dreams to be an official prequel to the series, Vampire Dreams Revamped. As the series progresses, readers are drawn into the civil war between the Sons and the Archons who seek to take over the vampire world. It’s a power struggle to the death, for only one side can win this battle.

The joy of storytelling isn’t in the end result but the journey, not only for the writer but also for the reader. In a world that seems increasingly disposable, I work to create tales that find a home in readers’ hearts and memories..

Guest post: The Brazen Amazon by Sandy James

UFI welcomes Sandy James Author of The Brazen Amazon. Thanks for Joining us!!

Thanks so much for hosting my guest blog on my Brazen Amazon Book Tour! I’m thrilled to be at Urban Fantasy Investigations!

I thought what might be fun today would be to cast the “movie” of The Brazen Amazon. What better way to help readers get to know my hero, heroine, and the important secondary characters, than to let you see them all through my eyes!

The heroine is Gina Himmel. Gina is the Air Amazon. She’s twenty-six and a tomboy. After a short and angst-filled tour in the Air Force, she became an air traffic controller until she received the divine “call” to become the next in the line of Amazon warriors.

Gina is very tall—six feet, to be exact. She wears her hair short because she’s a no-fuss kind of girl. Her goddess—Ix Chel from the Mayan culture—gives her a supernatural gift. Whatever mood Gina has becomes a new highlight color in her hair. Red is angry. Blue is calm. She thinks it’s a great gift, until she realizes how open that makes her to everyone around her.

I picture Gina as Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises. Tall. Lithe but muscular. Just chop off all that hair like Ms. Hathaway did for Les Miserable, and you’ve got Gina Himmel!

My hero is Zach Hanson. From day one, he’s been Ryan Reynolds looking an awful lot like he does in Blade III and Green Lantern. Ultra fit and devastatingly handsome. Throw in some major intelligence, and you’ve got my Zach.

I can’t stop at just Gina and Zach when the other three Amazons are every bit as important to the story. Each book in the Alliance of the Amazons might focus on one of my ladies, but the “sisters” appear through all the stories. So let’s start with the oldest of the Amazons—Earth.

Rebecca Massee’s story is told in The Reluctant Amazon. She’s the embodiment of Mother Earth, and her patron goddess in the Celtic deity Rhiannon. I see Rebecca as Claire Danes. Blonde and pretty with an understanding smile and a sweet nature.

The Fire Amazon is Megan Feurer. No one else but Scarlett Johansson could play Megan, and I picture her looking much like the Black Widow character she plays in The Avengers—sassy, smart, and kick ass. Her powers were endowed by the Norse goddess Freya, and The Impetuous Amazon tells her story, including a lot of fun surprises.

The last Amazon is Water. Sarita Neeraj is Indian and lives a life deeply immersed in her wonderful culture. She’ll wear saris just as often as she’ll wield her sword. Because I’m a fan of the movie Bend it Like Beckham, I’ve always thought of Sarita as looking like Parminder Narga. I wrote the last book “seeing” the actress as I told Sarita’s story.

The Brazen Amazon released from Carina Press on May 6th. It’ a stand-alone story, but I do believe readers enjoy the series more if they read the books in order. The price for all the books has been drastically reduced for this new release, so I hope a few fans will decide to give my girls a chance. The series concludes with a bang in September 2nd when Sarita becomes The Volatile Amazon.

Thanks again for having me as a guest! Readers can find me at “sandyjamesbooks” on both Facebook and Twitter, or visit my website sandy-james.com to find links to all my stories!
