Alivia’s father left her a letter before he died, begging her to stay away from the King and the Royals. But it was a plea made in vain. She never could have run from this life, not when she might be Cyrus’ resurrected queen. The King has arrived in Silent Bend and with him, he brought the end to Alivia’s mortal life.

Uncontrollable bloodlust and an ever-shifting world rule her nights now. These twisted politics are deadly enough, but now her heart is the newest battleground. There’s no hiding from the one who hates everything she was born to, a spy who embraces everything she’s become, and a King who vies for someone she may soon remember.

The games have begun. The House of Conrath is growing. Blood will be shed, the bodies will fall. Alliances will be tested and old enemies look like harmless children compared to the new ones rising from the shadows.

The Kings arrival has been much anticipated and his visit in HOUSE OF KINGS didn't disappoint.

Alivia is now a vampire and the King has arrived to help her get her house in order. Alivia has brought in a lot of allies and they're all as ready as they can be for the Kings visit, but it's just as hard as they expected. There are a lot of twists and turns thrown into HOUSE OF KINGS and a lot of drama. The bitten vampires are adding to the drama by continuing to kill and turn townsfolk. The story line continues to intrigue me and the characters continue to develop.

**Small spoilers ahead, I don't mention names, but I mention my reaction to events that happened in HOUSE OF KINGS without giving all the details** Alivia made some pretty questionable choices in HOUSE OF KINGS and her choices led to someone really close to her leaving and moving on from her life. I have to say that this person leaving really broke my heart for Alivia. I don't know if she will ever get this person back, but I hope so. I was also really surprised by her allies at the end of HOUSE OF KINGS. I think they should have known better and I just didn't understand their reactions towards Alivia **End of spoilers**

I can't say I'm surprised by the ending events of HOUSE OF KINGS because it just seems like something that would happen after the King gets through with The House of Conrath, but I can say I was surprised by some others reactions. There is no way that I won't be reading HOUSE OF JUDGES in June.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Promo + Giveaway: Shadow Rites by Faith Hunter

Shadow Rites
Jane Yellowrock #10
Slaying vampires is child’s play for skinwalker Jane Yellowrock. But handling the complicated politics of New Orleans’ supernatural players is another story...

Jane is keeping the peace between visiting groups of witches and vamps in the city, but then trouble comes knocking on her doorstep. When her house is magically attacked, the wild chase to find her assailants unearths a mystery that has literally been buried deep.

A missing master vampire, presumed long deceased, is found chained in a pit...undead, raving mad, and in the company of two human bodies. Now it’s up to Jane to find out who kept the vampire hidden for so long and why, because the incident could tip already high supernatural tensions to an all-out arcane war.

Short Story pt.5:

IT’S JUST A DATE Part FIVE
From the world of Jane Yellowrock
Copyright Faith Hunter

The purple smoke trailing along the middle of the aisle didn’t act like regular smoke. It didn’t spread out and dissipate into the room. It didn’t rise as if heated. It moved almost as if with purpose, in a straight line down the aisle, past our booth, toward the entrance of Stephan’s. And Commander Walker and his wife who were being seated.
“Problem,” I said, interrupting the waiter’s patter.
“Witch working?” Bruiser asked. He had already seen the smoke.
I sniffed. “Smells like it.”
In an instant everyone moved. Bruiser ducked out and under the purple smoke, to the front of Stephan’s to warn the commander and start clearing the space. Eli went under the table instead of over it and was in the aisle before I noted he had moved, a small weapon at his thigh in a two-hand grip. In a fast, bent-kneed walk, he moved to the rear of the restaurant. The instant he was past, Wrassler stood and pushed the waiter down and to the side. “Get out!” he whispered in a stage whisper that carried through half the restaurant. Everyone nearby looked up. When they moved too slowly, he grabbed up the couple nearest, and started clearing the place physically. Syl followed Eli, weapon drawn. Jodi was calling in the local magical HazMat team.
For once, I stayed seated and took pics, sending them to the Kid and to Molly, my BFF witch friend with the text, “Problems. Smoke spell. Suggestions?”
Instantly, I got a reply from Molly. “GET OUT!!!” All in caps with three exclamation marks. Instead, I darted into the kitchen and grabbed the head chef, a sous chef, a desert chef and three scullery types. With the words, “Terrorist attack. Get out and get under cover,” I shoved them toward the loading exit, an extra door directly from the kitchen into the delivery alley. Terrorists was a lie, but terrorist was much likely to result in compliance than saying magical attack.
“The burners!” the head chef said, pulling away.
“I’ll get ‘em.” I yanked his collar and shoved harder to the back, bunching them into a herd and heaving them into the dark. Shutting the door so they’d think twice about coming back in.
I raced over and cut everything that was hot off. Cow! Beast thought. The smells were delish and Beast wanted to taste everything in every pan, especially the half-raw steak. I ignored her and spun back to the restaurant.
But my way was blocked. By a purple wall of smoke.

After training at the PsyLED academy, Nell returns home to her woods to find the land feeling sick and restless. And that sickness is spreading. Review: The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins

The Great Hunt
Author: Wendy Higgins
Release Date: March 8, 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
ISBN:   0062381334
ISBN13: 9780062381330
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Edelweiss
When a strange beast terrorizes the kingdom of Lochlanach, fear stirs revolt. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity knows her duty to the kingdom but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger…until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. There’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the perilous secrets he’s buried begin to surface.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

With a nice fast pace and interesting storyline, THE GREAT HUNT was an intriguing fantasy with plenty of action and romance to complement the darker elements throughout.

Things I Liked: I actually really liked Aerity as a characters. She was willing to sacrifice her happiness for her kingdom. That isn't a small thing and I thought that she had a really good grasp on the reality of the situation her family and kingdom were in. Paxton was really moody, but he is loyal to his family and the kingdom he lives in. I can respect that.

A few other likable things. THE GREAT HUNT had a good amount of mystery to it. I love a good mystery. There was a great cast of secondary characters that helped keep things interesting. The world was great and well built.

The Issues: The romance ticked me off more than it made me swoon. Although I liked Paxton, he acted like a true arse to Aerity and did a lot of things to push her away even though he was attracted to her and wanted her. But the worst part was that Aerity actually liked it in some ways. Uggh, what is with that? Not cool.

Another issue. There was a lot of sitting around the castle. Even with the neat action scenes there was an equal amount of 'nothing going on' moments.

Even with the issues, I still enjoyed THE GREAT HUNT and wouldn't mind continuing with the next book to see how things work out for Aerity and Paxton.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: The Demon Squad Initiative by Tim Marquitz

UFI welcomes Author Tim Marquitz. Thanks for Joining us!!

Tim has a Kickstarter campaign going to fund the tenth book in the Demon Squad series! You can check it out by following the link below.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1862998032/the-demon-squad-initiative?ref=nav_search

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

TM: That I don’t eat babies for breakfast. No, I’m kidding. I totally do. Beyond that, I think I’m pretty open and the core of who I am has been dissected quite a bit over the years. I’m an open book. One who apparently likes bad puns.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

TM: There’s really not much down time in my life. Between the work I do for Ragnarok Publications, the outside editing with Dominion Editorial, and my writing and family obligations I’m more often than not working. That said, I do make sure to squeeze in time to watch mixed martial arts events (UFC and whatnot) but even then I’m multi-tasking, doing social media stuff or editing. The goal is to eventually hit a point where I can have a more defined schedule and enjoy some off time but I haven’t made it there yet.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

TM: While I enjoy all the aspects of putting a story together I think the best part is once I’ve done all the prep work (outline, concept, direction) and can sit down and just let my mind run amok and write. There’s so much that goes into writing that the actual writing gets overshadowed. Fortunately, I’m not one of those authors that feels the need to craft every sentence as if it were their last so when I sit down to write I kind of fall into a trance and just go to town. When I’m there, in the zone so to speak, that’s the part I love the most. I get to create without worrying about anything more than crafting compelling visuals.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

TM: I always outline my stories, which is really the only thing I really have to do. If I don’t I feel like I’m floundering and I find it hard to move forward with the writing. I just don’t feel grounded or prepared otherwise. Beyond that though, no, there’s really no other ritual I feel obligated to adhere to. As long as I have outlined my story and I know what each chapter is supposed to be then I’m good to go.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

TM: I’m a HUGE Jim Butcher fan. The Dresden Files were a revelation to me at the start of my writing career and largely defined how I went about creating the Demon Squad series. Jim’s voice spoke to me and really helped me find my own.

Beyond Dresden, I’m a fan of Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series and the first few Kevin Hearne Iron Druid books. M.L. Brennan’s Generation V and Diana Rowland’s White Trash Zombie books are book great series. Amusingly enough though I often prefer the independent urban fantasy like Craig Schaefer’s Daniel Faust series or Rick Gualtieri’s Bill the Vampire.

How would you pitch Demon Squad to someone who has not heard of it before?

TM: I would pitch the Demon Squad as the funnest urban fantasy series you’ve never heard of. The first of the series came out just a couple months after Kadrey’s Sandman Slim hit the shelves back in 2009 and it was around long before Hearne and many of my contemporaries out there that you have heard of. The series is off the wall and fun and action-packed and a little crude at times, but it’s original and offers as much in the way of laughs as it does action.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Demon Squad series is set in?

TM: Absolutely. The world of the Demon Squad is predicated on the idea that God and the Devil have left humanity behind and the supernatural world is left in chaos. In the wake of their disappearance a lot of things that were hidden away are creeping into the light, revelations that probably should have been left in the darkness. As the series progresses it becomes apparent that there is more to our world than just Earth, that dimensions exist just outside of reach and that all we’ve been taught about God and creation of existence might not have been the complete truth. And, of course, all of this is seen through the eyes of the main character, Frank, who just happens to be related to the Devil.

Do you have a favorite scene in Institutionalized?

TM: Despite having only just begun the novel I actually do have a favorite scene. I can’t go into the details but suffice it to say that Frank has a snark-filed run in with his father and Daddy offers up some true to form wisdom in a way that only Lucifer can. It’s a dark scene that reminds Frank, despite all his growth and burgeoning power, that he’s still just a kid in the grand scheme of things.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

TM: My favorite character is definitely Frank from the Demon Squad. He’s so similar to me in a lot of ways, his voice and nature, that it flows so easily. I’ll start in on a DS book and before I know it I’ve written six to seven thousand words without breaking a sweat. The character is just so fun, his perspective so warped and amusing that I can’t help but enjoy putting his thoughts to paper.

On the opposite side of that is frank’s angelic cousin Scarlett. She’s a tortured soul, adrift emotionally after being abandoned by God she’s torn and conflicted. She’s the polar opposite of Frank and her voice doesn’t flow as naturally for me as Frank’s does, for obvious reasons. She’s polite, usually, and her head is in the clouds, her naivety at odds with her intelligence and will to do the right thing. She makes for difficult writing.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

TM: I’ve several new Demon Squad books coming out after the completion of the current Kickstarter campaign, The Demon Squad Initiative. The main one is DS-10 Institutionalized, but there’s also an offshoot novel featuring characters from the DS universe and a full length novel featuring Frank’s cousin, Scarlett.

On top of that, I’ve my comedic zombie novel ZILF to finish as well as a monster/survival book I’ve been invited to write. This year will also see the release of Humanity 2.0 (Emergence) the first in a shared world superhero franchise coming out from Ragnarok Publications.

Promo + Giveaway: Tiger Lily by Wende Dikec

Tiger Lily
Amazon Kobo Barnes and Noble
Lily Madison thought dying because of a bad manicure was the worst thing that could happen. She was wrong.

Waking up in the hospital and realizing she's being stalked by an entire herd of naughty little ghosts turns her entire world upside down. She begins to doubt her own sanity until she realizes she isn't alone. A Goth girl, named Zoe, can see the ghosts, too.

Most of the ghosts look like fuzzy blobs, but one is not blobby at all. He's a very hot, very annoying dead guy named Nick. Although they dislike each other on sight, Nick soon realizes Lily is his only hope. With the help of Zoe and Mr. Wan, the manicurist who almost killed her, she has only days to get Nick and the other ghosts back where they belong or the whole world will be in terrible danger.

But sending the ghosts back means saying goodbye to Nick forever, and Lily isn't sure she'll ever be able to let him go.

"First Wende Dikec grabs you with her fresh writing, then she keeps you in the throes of her story with an incredible voice and a gifted talent for spinning tales that will amaze and delight. I am stunned. Tiger Lily will consume you, and before you know it you are fighting for air yet begging for more. You've been warned!"
--NY Times Bestselling Author Darynda Jones

Excerpt:

I died because of a bad manicure. It wasn’t a nasty fungal infection from the manicurist using dirty equipment, or a cut that allowed deadly bacteria to creep under my skin and rot me from the inside out. I died because on impulse I let Mr. Wan of Wan Fine Lady Nail Salon paint my nails a color called Pretty and Pink.
With my red hair and pale skin, pink is tricky, but I trusted Mr. Wan. When he told me, “New color, big discount for you, Lily Madison,” I didn’t realize he actually meant, “Bad color, nobody else wants it.”
I’ve never been a risk taker. My idea of living on the edge was not having an extra bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse. I knew the pink would be a mistake, but I ignored my inner voice. I guess the smell of acetone and the hum of the nail dryers had lulled me into such a relaxed state that I didn’t realize how awful the color actually looked until I drove home in the BMW my parents had given me for my sixteenth birthday.
Pretty and Pink was false advertising, but as I learned long ago in my ninth grade science fair project, neither the government nor the FDA regulates the names of nail polish colors. I didn’t have a case, but I felt extremely upset.
I didn’t see the ice cream truck stopped in the middle of the road. I was staring at my nails, wishing I’d gone with my first choice, Princesses Rule!, a frosty pale pink that would have enhanced my natural skin tone. I glanced up just in time to narrowly avoid hitting the truck and several small children caught in a snow-cone-induced feeding frenzy.
It’s funny how accidents happen in slow motion. I remember the shocked faces of the people on the street as I swerved and flew over a small embankment. Someone screamed, and it took me a full second to realize the high-pitched wail came from my own mouth. I’d started screaming the minute I’d steered away from the ice cream truck, screamed some more as my car became an airborne missile, and continued screaming until it landed in the deep, murky waters of Lake Eugene.
I tried to open my door, but it refused to budge. My windows wouldn’t roll down either. I pressed the buttons anyway, even the one on the dashboard to turn on the radio, but none of them worked except my hazard lights. I didn’t know I had hazard lights, although I’d read all about them in my driver’s ed class. They blinked on and off, illuminating the darkness around me with an eerie, red, pulsating beacon.
I unbuckled my seat belt and searched for something to break a window with, but couldn’t find anything. I swung my purse at it, pounded it with the heel of my shoe, and even tried stabbing it with my nail file. I reached for my phone to call for help, but it was too late.
As the car filled with water and I gasped for air, the last thing I saw was that awful color on my nails as I scratched and clawed at the window until my fingers bled and everything turned black. As I died, I thought about my parents, and my friends, and all the things I would never get to do, and the fact that Mr. Wan had just lost his very best customer due to his own negligence. I hoped he would be sorry. Thinking about how bad he’d feel gave me just a little peace before I slipped away into darkness.

Review: Burning Glass by Kathryn Purdie

Burning Glass
Release Date: March 1, 2016
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Burning Glass Book #1
ISBN:   0062412361
ISBN13: 9780062412362
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Edelweiss

Sonya was born with the rare gift to feel what those around her feel—both physically and emotionally—a gift she’s kept hidden from the empire for seventeen long years. After a reckless mistake wipes out all the other girls with similar abilities, Sonya is hauled off to the palace and forced to serve the emperor as his sovereign Auraseer.

Tasked with sensing the intentions of would-be assassins, Sonya is under constant pressure to protect the emperor. But Sonya’s power is untamed and reckless, and she can’t always decipher when other people’s impulses end and her own begin. In a palace full of warring emotions and looming darkness, Sonya fears that the biggest danger to the empire may be herself.

As she struggles to wrangle her abilities, Sonya seeks refuge in her tenuous alliances with the charming-yet-volatile Emperor Valko and his idealistic younger brother, Anton, the crown prince. But when threats of revolution pit the two brothers against each other, Sonya must choose which brother to trust—and which to betray.

Through a tragic accident—which Sonya causes—Sonya is left as the last Auraseer and is sent off to the palace to serve the emperor. She is expected to keep him safe, but she has no control over her power and is more of a liability.

It would be really hard to feel everything someone else does. It was easy to feel bad for Sonya and form a connection with her character on that front, but I didn't always like her. Another area where she lost me was on the romance portions of BURNING GLASS. I could understand the pull between the brothers due to the emotions she is feeling from them, but at some point she has to pull herself together. She ends up doing that, but it takes the whole book. The constant love triangle was a bit boring.

I actually really liked the ending of BURNING GLASS. In fact, it was probably the best part of the story. A lot happens and it played out fantastically. Will I read more? We will see.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Review: Demon Kissed by Karilyn Bentley

Demon Kissed
Release Date: February 17, 2016
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
ASIN:   B01AB5116U
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

Gin Crawford, the world's latest demon huntress, has no time to mourn her dead lover as she's called in to determine why a demon attack occurred at the local medical school. And not just any demon, but the one demon that gives her demon-killing bracelet the shivers. A dead professor, a lab full of missing anthrax, and a demon who turns good people into minions complicate her life. Can Gin and her mentor Aidan Smythe solve the mystery of the missing anthrax and the identity of the demon before someone else dies?

The problem with reading book one and book two in a series back to back!?!? You have a hard time separating them when it comes review time. That's right, I read DEMON KISSED immediately after finishing DEMON LORE and although I really liked both of them and already wrote my review for DEMON LORE, I am having a hard time separating the books for my review of DEMON KISSED. I will try my hardest to stick to book two.

The Demon Huntress series has kept my interest so far. Bentley has done a great job developing her characters. The world is interesting and is explained well and the story is full of action, suspense and a bit of romantic drama.

I'm very interested in seeing what Gin's brother's role will eventually be. He has a pretty interesting gift and we know he will use it to help his sister, but will he join up with her and use it consistently? I see a lot of potential with Aidan and Gin. Gin has some mourning to get through, but the sexual tension and spark between these two is high and getting higher. Sargon is still a complete mystery to me, but I see a lot of potential with his character and I can't help but want to see him as a true ally to Gin. Only time will tell.

The characters continue to grow on me and the story continues to entertain me. I will keep my eye out for book three!

I gave it 4/5 stars
