Guest Post & Giveaway: A Study In Silks by Emma Jane Holloway

UFI welcomes Emma Jane Holloway Author of A Study In Silks. Thanks for Joining us!!

The Temptation of a Steampunk Heroine

by Emma Jane Holloway

Temptation wears many faces, and the Victorians were quick to point out (rather gleefully at times) all the ways a young girl could go wrong. Reputations could be ruined in an instant, based on little more than a careless word or a minute spent alone with a man in a closed room. Ruin could mean anything up to being cast out penniless on the streets.

In A Study in Silks, my steampunk heroine, Evelina Cooper, is all too aware of what a misstep might cost her. Her position in Society is by no means assured, and the fact that she knows how to work magic—a crime punishable by public execution, if she’s is lucky—means she’s extra paranoid. But temptation keeps leaving her calling cards like a persistent salesman.

First, because she is a pretty young woman of marriageable age, there are suitors. One is Tobias—handsome, clever, rich, and heir to a title. He’s the flashy sports car model—breathtaking, but not really practical. And then there is Nick, her childhood sweetheart and a performer with the circus where Evelina spent her childhood. He has all the street-smarts and passion a girl could want, but whenever her magic and meets his, the results are about as subtle as a poltergeist on amphetamines. That’s all too dangerous when one is trying to hide rogue talents from the authorities.

But where Evelina can (mostly) resist the lure of romance, she has her future to think of.  Security was a powerful motivator during a time when people literally starved in the streets. She may not be dazzled by money, but she’s been poor and knows all too well what hunger means. It was around this time that the Salvation Army was first established because the living conditions in some parts of London were so dire. Marxists, anarchists, and trade unions were active as well, each trying in their own way to alleviate the suffering. The streets of nineteenth-century London were a volatile place to be. They were, after all, the playground of Jack the Ripper.

But what she wants even more than pure safety is the kind of independence and intellectual freedom her uncle, Sherlock Holmes, enjoys—a faint hope for an unmarried woman of modest means. Lucky for her that this is a steampunk world, and she’s inherited dual talents for magic and science. And this is where Evelina does falter. When the sorcerer Magnus offers to teach her how to use her magic to full advantage, she wavers.

Unfortunately, Magnus is tainted by death magic and is exactly the type of practitioner she has been taught to revile. But he might hold the solution to all her troubles, if only she would consent to learn what he has to teach. The price wouldn’t be high—possibly just her soul. But in the end, what wouldn’t we pay for self-knowledge? For freedom and the chance to chart our own course in the world? The worst demons, the worst temptations, are always within ourselves. Over the three books of The Baskerville Affair, this is Evelina’s struggle.

What is the most interesting internal conflict you’ve read about?  Do you think this kind of inner struggle is a key feature of urban fantasy?

Ever since childhood, Emma Jane Holloway refused to accept that history was nothing but facts prisoned behind the closed door of time. Why waste a perfectly good playground coloring within the timelines? Accordingly, her novels are filled with whimsical impossibilities and the occasional eye-blinking impertinence—but always in the service of grand adventure.

Struggling between the practical and the artistic—a family tradition, along with ghosts and a belief in the curative powers of shortbread—Emma Jane has a degree in literature and job in finance. She lives in the Pacific Northwest in a house crammed with books, musical instruments, and half-finished sewing projects. In the meantime, she’s published articles, essays, short stories, and enough novels to build a fort for her stuffed hedgehog.

A Study In Silks
The Baskerville Affair #1
Evelina Cooper, the niece of the great Sherlock Holmes, is poised to enjoy her first Season in London’s high society. But there’s a murderer to deal with—not to mention missing automatons, a sorcerer, and a talking mouse.

In a Victorian era ruled by a council of ruthless steam barons, mechanical power is the real monarch, and sorcery the demon enemy of the empire. Nevertheless, the most coveted weapon is magic that can run machines—something Evelina has secretly mastered. But rather than making her fortune, her special talents could mean death or an eternity as a guest of Her Majesty’s secret laboratories. What’s a polite young lady to do but mind her manners and pray she’s never found out?

But then there’s that murder. As Sherlock’s niece, Evelina should be able to find the answers, but she has a lot to learn. And the first decision she has to make is whether to trust the handsome, clever rake who makes her breath come faster, or the dashing trick rider who would dare anything for her if she would only just ask.

A WOMAN OUT FOR BLOOD
Nicole Martin was only eight years old when the vampire slaves rose up in rebellion and killed her family. Now she devotes her life to finding a vaccine against vampirism, hoping to wipe out her memories—along with every bloodsucker on the planet. But there’s one thing she cannot destroy: her searing, undeniable attraction for the one man she should hate and fear the most . . .

A VAMPIRE OUT FOR REVENGE
A member of the renegade vampire MoonBound Clan, Riker is haunted by demons of his own. When he recognizes Nicole and remembers how her family enslaved his loved ones, his heart burns for vengeance. But when he kidnaps Nicole and holds her in a secret lair, his mortal enemy becomes his soul obsession, his greatest temptation, and, perhaps, his only salvation—a hot-blooded lover who could heal him with her touch . . . or bury him forever.

I enjoyed the few books i have read in Larissa's Demonica series so when I was asked to review BOUND BY NIGHT I had no problem saying yes.

Nicole grew up with vampire slaves as servants. They were her cook, her nanny, her gardener, you name it they did it until they day they rebelled and she almost died. Since that fateful day she has devoted her life to finding vaccine against vampirism. Riker hates the Martin family with everything in him. When Nicole comes home to take over the family business he sees it as the chance to wreak vengeance on the family once and for all. Unfortunately his plan does not play out as planned.

I enjoyed the pacing and writing style of BOUND BY NIGHT. You can not help but feel invested in the outcome of the storyline and the characters. Nicole knows who she is and does not try to push what her faults on others. She does not back down easily and pushed for what she felt was right. Riker, Riker, Riker. Ugh he is a pain in the butt but you can not help but fall for his alpha male attitude. Both Nicole and Riker are beyond stubborn. They truly fit together but each one has moments of cowardice, idiocy or the like that keep them at each others throats for most of the book. The world is a bit crazy. The humans think they are superior and do anything in their power to control Vampires. We get just enough out world building so that we understand what is going on but I think there is much more world to explore.

The Moonbound Clan Vampires series will be like her others and will feature new main characters with each book but I can not help but want to stick with Nicole and Riker. There is so much more of them I want to see. I will have to grab book 2 just so I can see how they are doing and what happens with the new characters though. Sigh I'm invested =)

I gave it 4/5 stars

Guest Post & Giveaway: Would-Be Witch by Kimberly Frost

UFI welcomes Kimberly Frost Author of The Southern Witch Series. Thanks for Joining us!!

When in the World Would You Go?
 Kimberly Frost

Thanks so much for letting me visit with you today!

I suspect I’m like a lot of readers in that I love the way books transport me to different times and places, where the laws of physics need not apply, but other strange rules may apply. I’ve time-traveled through the Scottish Highlands in the 1700s, ran with werewolves in 1st century Rome, and explored new American cities post-apocalypse. There are so many times and places to explore.

When I began writing the Southern Witch series, I liked the idea of Tammy Jo’s family having a long history in witchcraft, and I enjoy when mysteries that have never been solved are finally resolved. So even though Tammy Jo, like us, lives now, there are characters and crimes from past times that crop up.

Here’s a brief exchange from Southern Witch Book 1, WOULD-BE WITCH, between Tammy Jo and the family ghost, Edie, who lived and died during the Jazz Age:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stole a glance at Edie’s exquisite face. With porcelain skin and high cheekbones, she was prettier than a china doll. She wore her sleek black hair bobbed, either straight or waved, depending on her mood and her outfit. Her lips were painted a provocative cherry red today. Rumor had it that Edie had inspired men to diamonds…and suicide. It was generally accepted in my family that one of her jilted beaus had murdered her, but she never shared the details of the 1926 unsolved New York homicide of which she’d been the star.
“How are you?” I asked.
“I’m dead. How would you bed?”
I opened my mouth and closed it again. I had no idea. Was it hard being a ghost? Was it boring? She was very secretive about her life, er, afterlife.
“What made you visit today?” I asked, still trying for polite small talk.
“I heard you quit your job. I decided to visit in the hope that you might be turning interesting.”
I frowned. Edie could be as sweet as honey on toast or as nasty as a bee sting. “I’m so sorry,” I said. “For a minute I forgot that this isn’t my life. It’s your entertainment.”
Her peridot eyes sparkled, and she favored me with a breathtaking smile. “Did I ever tell you about the time I stole a Baccarat crystal vase from the editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and gave it as a present to Dorothy Parker? I liked the irony. He fired her, you know.”
“Who was the editor?”
“Exactly,” she said with a smile. “Being jobless isn’t such a bad thing. You just need a present to cheer you up. As luck would have it, one is on the way.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Researching the 1920s to learn about Edie’s background for this story was great fun, but if I could find a good time-travel tour, I would definitely go to New York in the guise of a flapper and experience things first hand.

Southern Witch #1

In the small town of Duvall, Texas, the only thing that causes more trouble than gossip is magic.

The family magic seems to have skipped over Tammy Jo Trask. All she gets in the way of the supernatural are a few untimely visits from the long-dead, smart-mouthed family ghost Edie. But when her locket—an heirloom that happens to hold Edie’s soul—is stolen in the midst of a town-wide crime spree, it’s time for Tammy to find her inner witch.

After a few bad experiences with her magic, Tammy turns to the only one who can help: the very rich and highly magical Bryn Lyons. He might have all the answers, but the locket isn’t the only thing passed down in Tammy’s family. She also inherited a warning…to stay away from anyone named Lyons
