Review: Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall

Darkness Rises
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Publisher: Zebra
ISBN:   1420129783
ISBN13: 9781420129786
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Netgalley

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple--she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.

Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years--long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher. .

I'm always scared to read the next book in this series because I can't imagine any new couple being as compelling and full of chemistry as the last, but Dianne Duvall makes me eat my words while drawing me in for more.

Krysta instantly draws your attention as she acts her way into a confrontation with some vamps she is eager to cut to pieces. All the woman in the Immortal Guardians series are kick-ass so you know that Krysta could be no different but she takes it a bit farther by being a vampire hunter on her own and being able to stay alive as long as she has. With Krysta we also meet her brother who happens to have the gift as a healer and takes care of her when she comes home from hunting for the night. When Etienne shows up saving her from a vampire situation that gets a little hairy she has no idea what to think, she knows he is vampire but he doesn't act like the other vampires and his aura color is all wrong.

We know a bit about Etienne from the past books but we get to know him better in DARKNESS RISES. He notices Krysta and can not get her off his mind. He follows her and protects her when she finds herself biting of more than she can chew. They both fall hard and fast for each other and develop as a couple as swiftly as the others. Besides following the newest couple we learn a bit more about the other immortals. The coolest information is that we get a glimpse of what makes Seth and David who they are!

I absolutely love that all the characters are involved in each installment in the series. We get to meet the new couple, watch them develop, and still watch the others develop even more than they already have. They all come together to make each chapter full of action, entertainment, and engaging plot. The overall story that ties each book together continues to develop and twist as the Immortal Guardians stories continue. You do not want to miss this series and you wont want to put it down once you start. Pick up the first book if it's new to you and don't hesitate adding DARKNESS RISES to your book collection if you have not already!

I gave it 5/5 stars

Guest Blog: Blood Bound by Keshia Swaim

UFI welcomes Keshia Swaim Author of Blood Bound. Thanks for Joining us!!

Insanity Required?

As soon as people find out that I’m having a book published, the questions start. “Where do you get your ideas? How did you come up with your characters? Why did you choose this setting/subject?” These are all perfectly logical questions, and I think that’s the problem. You see, authors, in my experience, are very rarely logical. In fact, I’m beginning to think a healthy dose of insanity is actually a job requirement. Don’t believe me? Here are my top three reasons that all authors have to be a bit on the crazy side.

3. Authors CHOOSE to spend countless hours slaving over projects that won’t land in a reader’s hands for years (if ever). With no guarantee of fame, pay, or even a pat on the back, we are willing to lose sleep, type until our fingers bleed, and stare at computer screens until our eyes cross. And not only do we choose to do this, we love it. We cry, scream, quit, and then write the next chapter. Makes sense, right?

2. Authors are emotionally invested in the lives of characters WE MADE UP. It’s not that we don’t care about our real-life friends, (the few that will still put up with us) it’s just that the problems in our characters’ lives are just as important. When our main characters figure out the solution to a problem (that we put them in) it is time for a celebration!

1. Authors hear voices. And that’s a good thing. These voices tell us what to write, what happens next, and almost always win any arguments over plot. Yes, we lose arguments with the voices in our heads. And when we complain to other authors about our bossy characters hijacking our plot they just nod in sympathy before mentioning the last time they had the same experience.

So, you see, it’s not that we don’t want to answer your questions about our work. There are no real “trade secrets” we’re afraid of giving away. We just really don’t have all the answers, even if we wrote the book.

Thanks for having me!

Keshia Swaim grew up in a tiny Oklahoma town and, perhaps out of boredom, became an obsessive reader at an early age. After reading all the books the library had to offer, she began making up her own stories.
Like all good Oklahomans, Keshia attended the University of Oklahoma. She studied History, with a minor in Modern Literature, but her real goal was finding a husband. Two weeks after graduation she received her Mrs. degree as well.
She and Prince Charming still live in Oklahoma, where they've started a family. Between dirty diapers, Keshia tries to avoid reality as much as possible, stating that her own little world is a much more interesting place to be.

Starting college a year early is hard. Starting fae college and learning to protect the world from the Unseelie is harder.

Brielle Reed has always been an over-achiever, but this time she may have bitten off more than she can chew. Between her crash course in fae politics, struggles to control her new mind-reading ability, training sessions with the demanding Dr. Schwartz, and discoveries about the father who is still a mystery to her, Brielle finds herself longing for a chance at a normal life.

But she may not get that chance. Or chance at a life at all, for that matter.

Interview & Giveaway: Wicked Misery by Tracey Martin

UFI welcomes Tracey Martin  Author of Wicked Misery. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I started dabbling with writing in high school as a consolation prize to myself. I really wanted to be good at music like a lot of my friends, but I finally had to accept that I have no musical talent. So writing, it was!

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Besides reading? That’s probably the obvious one. I also love hiking, and I have a weakness for fantasy TV shows like Lost Girl and Game of Thrones.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I’m probably weird this way, but I love editing. I love the feeling of taking something ugly and turning it into something shiny.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

No routines, but I don’t write well in public. I need quiet. Coffee helps too.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

So hard to choose! I’ll have to go with Jaye Wells and Ilona Andrews, and right now I’m finally getting around to catching up on Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires and I’m a bit addicted.

How would you pitch Wicked Misery to someone who has not heard of it before?

Framed for murder, a woman who’s been cursed to get a magical high off human suffering must find a way to use that shameful ability to uncover the real killer.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that your series is set in?

I wanted to do something different than the sorts of creatures that are common in urban fantasy, like vampires and shapeshifters. So I based mine on the seven deadly sins, then narrowed it down to five “sins” for simplicity. Basically, humans are stuck sharing the world with creatures that prey on their weaknesses – greed, jealousy, lust, rage, and vanity. Then, of course, I needed to give humanity a way to fight back, so I had to give some humans the power to do that.

Do you have a favorite scene in Wicked Misery?

Probably any of the scenes between Jess and Lucen. There’s so much tension between them that it makes for fun dialogue.

Which character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Jess is definitely my favorite – it’s fun to be in her head. She has so much angst, but she covers it up with humor. Steph, her best friend, was probably the most difficult. She’s based on someone I knew who is transgender. I felt a certain responsibility about getting her right because there are so few transgender characters out there, yet I didn’t want it to be a big deal in the story because it’s not what defines her.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Well, I recently sent Wicked Misery’s sequel to my editor, so hopefully that next year! And for something totally different, I have a contemporary YA novel, Another Little Piece of My Heart, that’s filled with rock stars and dysfunctional families coming out in December.

Tracey Martin grew up outside of Philadelphia, the lucky recipient of a drama-free childhood, which is why she spent so much time reading about other people’s lives. It was while she was working on her doctorate in psychology that she had an epiphany -- imaginary people are way more fun than real ones. And so she began writing. Never able to choose just one of anything, she currently writes both urban fantasy for adults and contemporary stories for teens.

She likes her coffee simple, her music epic, and her movies to contain explosions. A city girl at heart, she doesn’t understand how she and her husband ended up living in New Hampshire, but writing keeps her off the mean, small town streets. You can find her online at tracey-martin.com.

Wicked Misery
Miss Misery #1
It s all quasi-legal fun until somebody gets framed for murder.

Jessica Moore thrives on misery. Literally. Thanks to a goblin s curse, she gets a magical high from humanity s suffering. A shameful talent like that could bury a girl in guilt, so to atone, she uses her dark power to hunt murderers, rapists and other scumbags until one of them frames her for his crimes.

In desperation, Jessica seeks refuge with the one person she trusts to not turn her in a satyr named Lucen. Like every member of his race, Lucen uses his lusty magic to control Boston s human population, and Jessica isn t immune to his power. But the murder victims belonged to a rival race, and when they discover Lucen is harboring Jessica, dodging the cops becomes the least of her problems.

With only five days to find the real killer, Jessica faces a danger far more serious than the brewing magical war. The danger of succumbing to Lucen s molten seduction.

Warning: Contains a heroine with a lust for misery, creepy murders, and creepier goblins, satyrs so hot you'd sell your soul for one, and scaly sewer rats masquerading as dragons. Who said magic was all sparkles and tiaras?

Review & Giveaway: Cold Blooded by Amanda Carlson

Cold Blooded
Release Date: October 8, 2013
Publisher: Orbit
ISBN:  0316205222
ISBN13: 9780316205221
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author/Publisher

Jessica arrives back in town to find her best friend missing and the most powerful witch in the country is blaming her for it. But before they can move to save her, the group is attacked.

On the run, Jessica and Rourke head to the mountains. Several surprises await them, but in order to save her father they are forced to leave for New Orleans early.

Arriving on the Vampire Queen's doorstep unexpectedly, and bringing trouble on their heels, the Sects are thrown into an all out war. The vicious
skirmish ends up forcing the vamps and Jessica to fight on the same team.

The Vamp Queen ends up owing Jessica, but what Jessica doesn't realize is just how soon she'll have to cash it in...

As with the earlier books in the Jessica McClain series COLD BLOODED starts off right after the events of the previous book HOT BLOODED. There is no rest for the wicked as Jessica and her allies are thrown into running from the sorcerers that are working with the Demons and trying to rescue Marcy.

From the moment I read BLOODED I fell in love with Jessica. There is something about her that draws you in and holds you hostage while you wait to find out what more could possibly go wrong or right with her. She continues to grow into her new self at every turn. She has no problem getting her hands dirty and she is fiercely protective of anyone she cares about. What more could you want? Oh yeah, a sexy man by her side! All those Jessica and Rourke fans will not be disappointed with the events that happen between these two in COLD BLOODED. As you can guess by the title we have a good amount of time in the presence of vampires. Without going in to spoilers I can say that I was shocked, yet intrigued by what we learn about Eudoxia and the inner workings of the vampires. No matter what happens between Jessica and Eudoxia I know where Jessica is going in RED BLOODED and I plan to be along for the ride.

I have given the series so far a steady 5 but COLD BLOODED had me really missing Jessica's pack and I hated not seeing them front and center with her. I kept looking for them to spring up and although they did I didn't get as much time with them as I wanted. I know I suck. The Jessica McClain Series continues to be on my must read, must buy list. Each book has been packed with action, suspense and fabulous characters. I can not imagine why anyone would not enjoy this series.

I gave it 4.5/5 stars
