Guest Blog & Giveaway: Destiny by Celia Breslin

UFI welcomes Author Celia Breslin. Thanks for Joining us!!

Celia chats with Carina, Alexander, and Fin

Hi Everyone!

Nice to be here on the Urban Fantasy Investigations blog today! Carina and Alexander, my hero and heroine from The Tranquilli Bloodline series, decided to tag along and let me interview them. Fin, a new friend Carina meets in Destiny, then asked if he could join us, too.  He’s such a flirt I couldn’t tell him no, despite the fierce negative grumblings from Alexander.  We’ll just keep them on opposite ends of the room, LOL.

Enjoy!

Hi guys! Thanks for joining me here at UFI. Please state your name. Also, do you have a nickname?

Carina:  “Hi, I’m Carina Agostina Ottavia Tranquilli. My friends call me Rina. But my fated soul mate calls me Carina.”

Alexander:  “That would be me, the soul mate, full name Alexander Wallace. Many call me Alex. I prefer Alexander, especially when Carina says it when we’re…intimate.”

Fin: “Fineas Fray Vale at your service, my lovely author.”  ::he kisses my hand:: “My friends and lovers call me Fin.”

What is your hair color? Eye color?

Carina: “Dark brown hair and eyes. When I go all vampy, though, my eyes darken to black. And when my special super power kicks in? Add some blinking stars in there, too.”

Alexander: “My hair is more milk chocolate to Carina’s dark chocolate tresses. My eyes are blue-grey. Carina likes to call them smoky blue.”

Fin: “Black hair, though Rina calls it coffee brown.  She likens my eyes to blackstrap molasses.  Lush descriptions from a luscious woman, wouldn’t you agree?”

::Alexander growls::

::Fin smirks::

Relax, boys. How old are all of you? Carina, you first.

Carina: “I’m 25. Okay, don’t be startled when Alexander tells you his age. He doesn't look a day over about 28. He was turned in his twenties.”

Alexander:  “I’m 45. Flattery will get you everywhere, Carina.”

Fin:  “I’m older than Carina’s young pup by centuries.”

Alexander:  “Call me pup again and I’ll break your brittle bones, Grandpa.”

Where were you born? Where have you lived since then? Where do you currently call home?

Carina: “I was born in Italy. I live in the U.S. now. West coast. San Francisco. Best city on the planet.”

Alexander:  “I’m a San Francisco native. I still live there, in the inner Sunset. But in truth, Carina is my home. I’d follow her anywhere.”

Fin:  ::he chuckles::  “My, my, such sweet lovebirds, aren’t they? I was born a human in Coventry, England. My rebirth as a vampire occurred in London.”

What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? On your nightstand? In your garbage can?

Carina:  “LOL, you really want to know? Okay, fridge first. Thai takeout leftovers, sake, sparkling water, orange juice, bacon, eggs…Stopping now. Otherwise, we’d be here all day. My fridge is well stocked, thanks to my roomies Mark and Ren. Those boys can cook! Workout clothes on my bedroom floor. Water bottle on nightstand. Garbage can is empty. I’ll thank Mark and Ren again. Those boys are super tidy.”

Alexander: “Is this a serious question? I have blood in my refrigerator, of course. Bedroom floor is clear. Nightstand is also clear. Garbage can…yes, empty. I’m a bit of a neat freak.”

Fin: “Blood, alcohol, orange juice, steak, vitamins, and an assortment of vegetables.  My regular blood donors tend to keep it stocked with their favorite foods. The rest of my penthouse is spotless, thanks to my housekeeper.”

Carina: “You live in a penthouse?”

Fin: “Yes, downtown. I never mentioned it before now, as we were rather busy in Destiny with other more pressing matters. You’re welcome in my home, anytime.”

::Alexander bares his fangs and hisses::

::Carina strokes Alexander’s arm::

Okay boys. Almost done. Then you can take this fight outside. Who are the people you are closest to?

Carina: “My close friends are my family: my business partner Adrian, my psychic pal Faith, her boyfriend Kai, and, of course, my badass bodyguards Mark and Ren. I have three brothers, but I’d call our relationship…hm…let’s just say it’s a bit strained. A work in progress.”

Alexander: “Thomas, Carina’s uncle. No comment on the family.”

Fin: “My darling Celia, you know I’m the life of every party.”

Alexander:  “That’s not an answer, old timer.”

Fin: “It will do for now.”

Which talent would you most like to have?

Carina: “I love karaoke and wish I could sing as well as a trained singer. Of course, my lack of vocal chops doesn’t stop me from belting out the tunes with my pals at our local sushi-sake-karaoke hangout.”

Alexander: “I have it. I play piano and guitar. Classically trained on both.”

Fin: “I wish I had even a smidgeon of artistic talent. To paint like the Masters I met back in the day…”

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Carina: “When I’m upset I tend to curse in Italian. Porco dio spills out of me most.”

Alexander:  “Pass. But here’s the word the older vampires overuse - Youngling. I hate it when they call me that.”

Fin:  “I do tend to call Rina by her royal title of Princess, though she would prefer I do not.”

Phew! We made it to the end of the interview without any blood spilled between the boys. Thanks again to Urban Fantasy Investigations for having us all over for a visit!

cheers,
Celia

Excerpt:

My day moved from ordinary to interesting when the deliveryman handed me a box that smelled of blood.

The scent made my mouth water. Pungent iron mixed with, of all things, lavender. My thoughts flew straight to Tessa, my surrogate vampire mother. When she pulled out one of her specialty powers, the one I fondly referred to as vampire valium, this relaxing, floral herb scented the air and reduced friend or foe to a boneless, helpless puddle.

I shut the front door on the retreating back of the deliveryman and wiggled the box. Nothing rattled inside. Not particularly heavy, less than ten pounds.

A peace offering, perhaps? Tessa certainly owed me one.

She’d commanded her minion, my boyfriend Alexander, to star in a two-month classical music tour of Italy, performing nightly for vampire dignitaries and their lucky minions. While I, the good little predestined, vampire apocalypse averting, Chosen One in training, remained behind in San Francisco to learn how to kick naughty vampire ass with my latent and rather unwieldy fire power.

“Hey boys,” I called up to the second floor where my friend Adrian and his lover, my mentor Jonas, took their sweet time descending for breakfast. “Bloody prezzie just arrived. And I do mean that literally.”

Silence answered my shout, followed by the whoosh of water in the master bathroom shower and a husky laugh from Adrian. Given that sexy sound, I could expect a delay. Jonas tended to make their showers last forever.

A jolt of jealousy stabbed my stomach. Wish I could enjoy some fun and sexy time with my guy. I shrugged off the sensation and strode into the kitchen. “Fine. More for me.”

I parked my ass in a chair and slid the box onto the table to study it. No return address or package info. Not that surprising. Vampires tended to aim for stealth and subtlety, to fly under the radar of the general human populace. One of Tessa’s minions probably compelled the delivery dude, or he belonged to the circle of humans already in-the-know.

I ripped off the tape in one pull and peeked inside. No packing peanuts, but rather a nest of lavender branches speckled with droplets of blood, as if the branches themselves bled. Beautiful, aromatic, and so very vampire.

A wine box large enough for two bottles rested in the nest. Cold to the touch, indicating recent refrigeration. I lifted it out, trailing my fingers over the gold latch, the dark, glossy wood, the Celtic knots carved into each end, and finally over the initials on top. My initials, C A T. Short for Carina Agostina Tranquilli.

What a well-crafted and thoughtful gift. I bet the wine inside would be equally well-made.

I flipped the latch and opened the lid. My brows collided. Not wine.

Nine vials of blood about the size of my ring finger rested side by side in black velvet bedding. A stopper sealed with red wax and stamped with my initials secured the blood inside each vessel.

I pulled one from its nest and held it up in the light streaming through the kitchen’s bay window. The liquid glowed a rich, ruby red like a shard in a stained glass window.

“Beautiful.” And odd.

Sure, I was a half vampire and could appreciate a fine bit of blood, but I was still a human female and for me, nothing says, I’m sorry for disrupting your entire life like high-end jewelry or better yet an all-expenses paid trip with my boyfriend somewhere secluded, luxurious, and far away from vampire politics. Hell, I’d settle for the return of my boyfriend to San Francisco.

Early Review: This Weakness For You by Wendy Sparrow

This Weakness For You
Release Date: October 17, 2014

ISBN:  1633751368
ISBN13: 9781633751361
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Publisher
She's exactly what he wants to sink his teeth into...Jordan Hill is his pack's Alpha. The Big Bad Wolf. And after his last breakup, he's opting to be the lone wolf, too. But then his rival's little sister—a human, of all creatures—comes to his door. And suddenly, what should be a tasty little snack turns out to be something more than Jordan could ever imagine...Christa Hansen  is simply looking for a place to stay. Yet the dark shifter smells irresistibly like forever. But getting involved with the wolf who tried to kill her brother—twice—is lunacy. Besides, in the unforgiving, shadowed world of shifters, there is no room for weakness. And falling for her family's enemy won't just be her downfall...it will be his, too.

If you've read PAST MY DEFENSES you know a little about who these two characters are. We met Christa very briefly when she picks up her cat, Lucifer, from her brother Dane's house and we got to know Jordan a little more in-depth since he's the alpha of the pack and helped the previous characters out quite a bit.

I found it hilarious that Jordan's new mate turned out to be not only human, but also Dane's little sister. Out of all the people in the world it could be to have it be Christa is just pure awesomeness.  I enjoyed Jordan's character before book 2 so it wasn't hard to be excited to read more about him. We find out pretty quickly that Christa has multiple sclerosis and knows nothing about shifters. She might be sick but she is still pretty darn kick butt. She fits right into being the alpha female and she proves herself many times.

The relationship between the two was pretty fun to watch. Christa from the beginning wants to know more about Jordan and be involved in his life. She of course has some reservations about their mate bond and the forever of it, but takes everything pretty darn well. Jordan on the other hand fights the connection at first. Once he realizes he doesn't want to fight it he turns all alpha male protective, puts his foot in his mouth a few times, but you can really see the love he has for Christa.

I found that there were a few slow parts in THIS WEAKNESS FOR YOU, but there is a pretty epic battle at the end that makes those slow points totally worth reading through. I don't think you HAVE to read PAST MY DEFENSES to enjoy THIS WEAKNESS FOR YOU, but there will be a few points you might not totally 'get' and book one is really good so I recommend reading it before umping in. I will be on the lookout for book three!

I gave it 4/5 stars

Review: Love Me To Death by Marissa Clarke

Love Me To Death
Release Date: October 28, 2014
Publisher: Entangled: Select
Underveil Book #1
ISBN:  1622663918
ISBN13: 9781622663910
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

Medical research scientist Elena Arcos has always lived her life under the radar. When she is shot in a convenience store robbery, Elena finds herself rocketed into supernatural insanity courtesy of a sexy immortal law enforcer. He’s convinced she’s some kind of freaky half-vampire thing and that her deceased dad was the real deal: a blood sucking monster. Yeah, right.

Nikolai Itzov never anticipated battling the urge to kiss the offspring of his father’s murderer. As a Slayer, an elite law enforcer descended from Azrael himself, his orders from the Underveil General are clear: Kill her or die.

Nikolai and Elena find themselves in a life and death battle to stop a plot designed to lift the Underveil and enslave humans. With her analytical mind and his centuries of training, they might be able to foil the plot with their lives and maybe their hearts intact. But in order to succeed, he must help her become the very thing he hates the most: an Undead.

I'm not going to lie, I was mighty confused during the first couple chapters of LOVE ME TO DEATH, thankfully things become more clear as Elena learns what the heck is happening to her and who the heck Nikolai is.

Elena has NO clue what's going on when she wakes up after being shot during a robbery. The sexy man that saved her kidnaps her and is able to do some crazy things. On top of that he's treating her like she is some horrible thing to be despised. Nik meant to kill Elena, but something just doesn't seem right to him so he saves her instead. It starts a chain reaction of events that turn him into a bit of an outlaw with his group and leads him to find out things he never knew about them to begin with.

Elana and Nikolai were both great characters. Nikolai was a bit of a jerk for a big portion of the book, but thankfully pulls his head out of his butt eventually. The couple has great chemistry and they put it to good use. Both grow a ton together and come out as a strong couple at the end of the book.

The plot in LOVE ME TO DEATH moves at a nice clip for most of the book and there is plenty of action involved. The drama that the couple creates was quite entertaining. We meet a great cast of secondary characters, whom I'm excited to read more about. LOVE ME TO DEATH kept me engaged and I will definitely pick up book two!

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview: Trinity: The Koldun Code by Sophie Masson

UFI welcomes Sophie Masson Author of Trinity: The Koldun Code. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

When I worked as a journalist on a local paper, many years ago, I had to write a puff-piece article about a plastering business. Now I hate boring readers, and plaster just has to be the most boring thing to write about, ever, but the guy who owned the business had paid for a big ad and so yours truly had been instructed by the editor to write an ‘advertorial’ as they were called. If I didn’t do it, I’d risk the sack or at the very least a not-so-gentle reprimand from the editor. So I went to see the guy in his plastering shop, and after asking one very uninspired question about plaster—which he seemed to find as boring as I did!—we got talking  and he told me this amazing story of how as a child he’d escaped with his parents to the West after the Soviets invaded Latvia. It was an amazing tale of real-life adventure—and that’s what I wrote about in the piece! He loved it (even had it framed and hung up in his shop!), my editor was bemused but happy, and readers wrote in to say they’d enjoyed the piece. It was a great lesson in how you can discover a good story even in the dullest of situations!

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Travelling, reading, cooking, listening to music and watching crime and urban fantasy TV series!

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Having amazing adventures in my head—that other people can go on later too!

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not really—I’m a write-anywhere-even-underwater kind of gal!

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Sergei Lukyanenko’s Night Watch series; Laurell K.Hamilton’s Anita Blake series; Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files Series; Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Neverwhere; Peter Higgins’ amazing new Wolfhound Century series. Among many others!

How would you pitch Trinity: The Koldun Code to someone who has not heard of it before?

It’s an enthralling and surprising mix of urban fantasy, romance and conspiracy thriller, set in modern Russia, where nothing can be taken for granted—and anything can happen!

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Trinity: The Koldun Code is set in?

It’s a world of colour and magic, boldness and suspicion, passion and fear, danger and darkness, beauty and terror, joy and sorrow where the past casts a very long shadow, a world that can be threatening but is never boring. It’s based very closely on modern Russia and its extraordinary mix of old and new, including a strong belief in magic that has never gone away. Hard-headed businessmen employ psychics and wizards; the Parliament votes to regulate witchcraft; ‘energy vampires’ are said to stalk the streets: Russia is truly THE uber-setting for urban fantasy, in my opinion! And so for my heroine Helen Clement, the contrast between the ‘grey world’ she inhabited and this startling new one she finds herself could not be bigger!

Do you have a favorite scene in Trinity: The Koldun Code?

When Helen first meets Alexey, in the woods—that scene gave me goosebumps to write.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Out of all my books—that’s a hard question! If I can answer just for this book—my favorite, apart from Helen and Alexey, was Maxim Serebrov, the disillusioned policeman—but ironically he was also one of the hardest, as I had to do a lot of background research to make him come fully alive and as realistic as possible!

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

At the moment, I am working on the sequel to Trinity: The Koldun Code. And enjoying it enormously! Titled Trinity: The False Prince, it will be out next year. I’ve also a YA fantasy coming out next year, called Hunter’s Moon, which is a rather dark re-imagining of the fairy tale of Snow White.

Trinity: Koldun Code
Trinity #1
I am in a world deeply strange and strangely deep, a world as different from my old life as it’s possible to be, and it feels completely natural.

An unexpected encounter with a handsome stranger in a Russian wood changes the life of 22-year-old traveler Helen Clement forever, catapulting her into a high-stakes world of passion, danger, and mystery. Tested in ways she could never have imagined, she must keep her own integrity in a world where dark forces threaten and ruthlessness and betrayal haunt every day.

Set against a rising tide of magic and the paranormal in a modern Russia where the terrifying past continually leaks into the turbulent present, Trinity is a unique and gripping blend of conspiracy thriller, erotically charged romance and elements of the supernatural, laced with a murderous dose of company politics. With its roots deep in the fertile soil of Russian myth, legend, and history, it is also a fascinating glimpse into an extraordinary, distinctive country and amazingly rich culture.

UFI welcomes Author A.J. Llewellyn. Thanks for Joining us!!

This or That

Character: Lahala, the Crazy Landlady from  Palehua: The Last Warrior Book 2

Angels or Demons : Well I like a nice bad guy, who doesn’t? When I was young and gorgeous (I’m still gorgeous but I’m kinda old) I was a backup singer in Honolulu for Don Ho. He made me his mistress. At the time he had twelve. He was bad. Bad! But so yummy, I tell you.

Vampires or Shifters: I have to go with shifters. My tenant, Lio Pakai is a shifter. I never knew we had those in Hawaii and it’s kinda sexy!

Up or Down: I like both when I’m having sex. Doesn’t everybody?
Pizza or Pasta: Pizza is easier when you’re eating in bed with a hot guy. Pasta gets a little messy. Don Ho used to love pineapple and onion pizza. And me. And not necessarily in that order…

Coffee or Tea: Champagne, darling. Everything’s better with a bubble! Tiny bubbles…

Coke or Pepsi: Champagne! Champagne!

YA or Adult: I only sleep with adults. Did I mention I was once Don Ho’s mistress?

Knives or Guns: Penises. Definitely my favorite weapon of choice.

Reading or Writing:  I prefer to watch movies. Movies with men in them ☺ Nekked men!

Facebook or Twitter: I like birds, so I prefer to Tweet. Also all the hot guys are on there showing all their parts and pieces. It’s awesome for a gal like me!

Excerpt:

One hour and five minutes later, we walked out of the house. Marcella kept assuring me I'd done very well as she held my arm. My back, neck, and shoulders ached. I'd had to act out giving birth to a baby-doll while Marcella pretended to be my birthing partner.

I felt sorry for my dad. The way she'd screamed at me gave me every indication that she would be a real Nazi in the delivery room.

I was in total panic. I'd had to pretend to give birth to the fake baby so that I empathized with Marcella's process, but found the experience so traumatic I didn't think I'd ever get over it. I kept trying to imagine her vagina opening to a huge, cavernous space as my father massaged the baby's emerging head with olive oil.

Had he done this for me and Louie? What about Marcella? Wouldn't the pain be horrendous?

"You did great, sweetie," she said. "You're a champion."

"No, I'm not. I'm a wuss. I couldn't handle the belly."

"You were fabulous."

"Who was better, me or Kord?"

"Oh, sweetie. Don't do this to yourself."

"Kord, right?"

She flashed me a guilty look. "Well, he sang show tunes as he delivered." She frowned suddenly. "I should have realized then that he was gay."

As we got to the SUV, she peered inside. "Sweetie, do we have any apples in there?"

No, we didn't, but a quick stop over at Foodland would fix that.

As I let her into the passenger side, I stared across the road at a newish house right on the corner. I had no idea why it held my interest, but I caught a sudden glimpse of ghostly children running across the street to it.

I blinked, and nostalgia filled my soul. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The streets were all gone, and I stared at miles and miles of sugar crops. I was standing on the site of an old plantation.

I saw a flash of a different building right on this corner. It was the kind of old Hawaiian-style building that marked a different era. Painted white and with a red roof, it had a lanai in front. I swear I smelled ice cream and chocolate. I heard laughter.

Across the top I saw in faded lettering the name Goo.

And just like that, the image faded.

When I got into the driver's side, Marcella said, "What are you seeing, sweetie?"

Shaking my head, I threw off the sudden emotion I felt. "I know it sounds weird, but I got a glimpse of what used to be there."

"What did you see?"

I hesitated. "A huge sugar plantation. And right where the house is, I saw a shop. A lot of kids went to it. I think it was a kind of soda fountain."

She reached her hand over to mine. "It was. It was the old Plantation Store, but people called it Charlie Goo's Store after the owner. It closed about twenty years ago."

I nodded. A strange, unsettled feeling came over me.

"You think maybe the spirits are getting you ready for a new case?" she asked.

"I'm thinking, maybe."

We weren't wrong.

Twenty seconds later, something fell on the hood of the car, making us both scream. It wasn't a coconut. It wasn't a bowling bowl. It wasn't a vagina or even an empathy belly. What fell on my hood and scared the heck out of both of us was a woman. At least, I thought she was.

And she'd fallen out of the clear blue sky.

Review: Dog with a Bone by Hailey Edwards

Dog with a Bone
Release Date: October 31, 2014
Publisher: Self-Published
Black Dog Book #1
ISBN:  9781632110
ISBN13: 9781632110077
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

Half-bloods with Thierry’s skill set are given two options. They can join the conclave’s marshal program, or they can pack their bags. Turn down the job offer, and you’ve just shredded your residency pass for the mortal realm and booked yourself a one-way ticket to Faerie.

Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she’s not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father’s footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters.

With a great pace, interesting characters, a complicated romance and a fun storyline, DOG WITH A BONE introduced the Black Dog series and made me want to read more.

The book starts in the midst of what you would consider a final exam, and Thierry is the only one in her class to make it through. She is finally a marshal for the conclave and her partner is the sexy Shaw who she's wanted for a while. I found Thierry to be a fun character that is willing to put herself on the line to get the job done.

The relationship between Shaw and Thierry is a bit complicated. He was her teacher so they couldn't really have a relationship. Now they're partners and it's probably not a good idea now either, but they decide to give it a try anyways. Nothing really happens between the two as whenever they are about to go at it they are interrupted. SO annoying. Would have been nice to see more out of those two.

The story was quick and easy to enjoy. There's a lot of action and danger. The world was easy to understand and didn't require a whole lot of explanation. DOG WITH A BONE might be self-published, but it's well written, so if you're an urban fantasy fan give it a try.

I gave it 4/5 stars
