Guest Blog & Giveaway: Chaos and Moonlight by A.D. Marrow

UFI welcomes Author A.D. Marrow. Thanks for Joining us!!

Hi everyone out there in reader land! My name is A.D. Marrow and I am the author of Chaos and Moonlight, the first book in The Order of The Nines series. Taris, the hero of book one and legendary life-‐saver, agreed to grab a cup of coffee with me to chat about life, love and ultimately what it is that makes him tick.

Thanks for carving out some time for me today, guy.

Legendary life-‐saver?

Well, it’s true, isn’t it?

I wouldn’t say legendary though. That’s a bit lofty.

I didn’t realize modesty was your strong suit.

I didn’t realize over-‐exaggeration was yours.

I’m a writer, Taris. Let’s get with the program, here.

*Taris gives me a wink as he takes a sip of his coffee and I’m immediately thankful that we are both in long-‐term, committed relationships. Gah, those eyes.*

So, questions. You wanna get to it?

Yes.

Fire away.

So, tell us a little bit about your story.

…but you know the story. You wrote it.

But the readers might not yet. Geez, guy. Help me out here. I’m trying to get more ladies to love you.

I already have a beautiful lady, thank you.

*He smiles again and there’s a brief glint of fang that peeks out. Melt. Like. Buttah.*

Because I love you, I will cooperate.  Um, I’m 801 years old. Had a birthday recently. That makes me the oldest living vampire. Let’s see. We were basically dying out until I saw a TV interview of my lovely wife-‐to-‐be where she said she developed an anti-‐rejection thing that would prevent donor patients from rejecting organs. That it happened to work for vampires was a bonus. We got together, some sparks flew, some lives were lost. There’s the story.

*I’m doing my best not to snort out coffee at this point. He’s so nonchalant about the whole thing. The second I manage to swallow, his hand slides across the table and covers mine*

How are you doing, by the way? Things okay now?

*I can’t answer him because there is a sudden flood of unshed tears choking in my throat. I know he’s talking about all of the years that he watched over me when I was fighting my own monster. I simply nod.*

Good.  You know I can’t leave you behind.

*It’s this constant protector side of Taris that makes me love him, even fifteen years after I first met him. I regain my composure and move onto the next question*

Tell me a little bit about Sarah.

*He smiles again and those gorgeous amber-‐colored eyes of his seem to light up. He brushes a long lock of hair out of his face*

She’s magic—everything about her. Just…I thought I’d seen all of the amazing things that this world had to offer until I met her. I thought I knew what completion was but she sasses her way in and BOOM. Everything falls apart and rebuilds itself bigger and better. I can feel her running through my veins every minute of every day and it’s amazing. You know, how you
feel when something bad is happening and you wish with all of your heart that someone or something would come along so that you can grab ahold and anchor yourself?

I may know a bit what that feels like, yeah.

That’s how I feel when I think about her. I was so bad off that I didn’t know how to save myself but after she showed up, I felt like I could do anything because I knew she had my back.

*He stops talking and squeezes my hand. It finally dawns on him that yes, I do know what that feels like because Taris was that anchor for me.*

She’s my…me, I guess.

That doesn’t make any sense.

It does to you.

This interview is very confusing.

But it’s honest, and that’s what readers want, isn’t it? An honest story, no matter how fantastical it may seem.

*I clear my throat*

So what is next for the two of you or for The Nines in general?

I’d hate to say you have to read it, but that’s the only way I can do it without spoilers. I will tell you that there will be a wedding soon.

Yours?

Not telling.

Why are you so complicated?

*He leans forward, his dark hair falling into his face and through the curtain, he gives me a devilish grin*

Because you made me this way…

Order of the Nines #1
Amazon iTunes BN Kobo
The Nines, an elite group of vampires, was established to stand as protection for their race. Fractured by centuries of betrayal and loss, the group is now little more than myth, its remaining members scarred and shattered.

Taris, the oldest living vampire, is no stranger to loss and heartbreak. He is all that holds the Nines together as they struggle to save themselves from total extinction.

Enter the beautiful and briliant Dr. Sarah Bridgeman, whose medical research has resulted in a breakthrough for both humans and vampires. Her work may be the salvation this weary band of guardians has been looking for.

Taris needs to reach Sarah and enlist her help—before those aligned against him can act. Can a vampire king convince a stunning young scientist to save a species that isn’t even supposed to exist?

For now, only one thing is certain: no science can explain the explosive chemistry between them.
Excerpt:

"It was several minutes before Sarah realized she wasn’t dreaming. The tall guy in her room, the creepy guy on the stairs, all of it had been real. After about five miles of telling herself to wake up, then looking at the tall guy who was driving, then pinching herself, then telling herself to wake up again, then looking at the tall guy some more, reality and the promise of a full-fledged panic attack set in.
“I swear, if you let me go, I won’t tell anyone, okay?” Sarah finally found her voice. She had a moment where she thought that maybe this was a dream again, judging by the way the driver of the car looked. He was dark and mysterious, chiseled from head to toe—she should know, she all but crawled into him when they were running away from that other guy. She couldn’t make out much in the dark of the truck’s cab, but even in the faint light of the street lamps, something about this guy made her feel different. Maybe it was his voice—that deep, gravelly, slightly British voice. Maybe it was the smell that came off him, that man-mixed-with-leather-and-aftershave smell.
“Who are you?” Her damned voice box rebelled against her and her question came out in a whisper.
He was focused on the road, his eyes never leaving it as he maneuvered the giant diesel truck in and out of the one a.m. traffic. “I’ll explain everything when we get to where we are going. In the meantime, just sit back and try to relax, okay?”
“Relax? Okay, yeah. I was taken out of my bed in the middle of the night by some guy I don’t even know, and then I was chased up the stairwell by a Sherman tank of a drag queen, and you tell me to relax? Yeah right, pal! Listen, seriously, whatever ransom you’re asking for, I can pay it. Just bring me to an ATM, and you can have whatever you want, okay? Just let me go.”
“It’s not that simple, Dr. Bridgeman.”
“The hell it’s not. Look, just let me out, and anything you want, it’s yours. Cross my heart, I won’t tell a soul you took me.” She made a little crisscross motion over her heart.
“Like I said, Dr. Bridgeman, it’s not that simple. I don’t need your money. I need you to do a job for me. That Sherman tank drag queen apparently wants you to do the same job. I think, circumstances being what they are, you might want to consider working for me.”
“Work, my ass.” Sarah mumbled to herself. “Who the hell are you, anyway? And what job could I possibly do for you? I’m a medical researcher, you dickhead.”
He didn’t bother looking at her. He took in a deep breath and let out a long sigh.
“My name is Taris. I’m an eight-hundred-year-old vampire, and I need you to use your medical research to help me stop the slow yet brutal extinction of a race of people who really do exist but are made into horror movie villains and romance novel heroes.”
When he was met with silence, he glanced over to see her passed out cold in the seat.
   “I knew it wouldn’t work.”

Review: Carpe Demon by J.C. McKenzie

Carpe Demon
Author: J.C. McKenzie
Release Date: May 15, 2015
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Carus Book #3
ASIN:   B00W2WFFZE
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author
As an ambassador with the Supernatural Regulatory Division, Andy McNeilly is responsible for acting as the Liaison for the Vancouver Vampire horde. The problem? She detests the Vampire Master, and the SRD can’t discover the beast she keeps locked inside.

After a menacing Demon throws an important Vampire event into chaos, Andy finds herself sniffing out crime scenes to identify and locate the mystery fiend from the nether realm. What she learns chills her bones.

Threatened by the Master Vampire to deal with the Demon, Andy's complicated personal life doesn't make things easier. She's willing to risk her life and pride to keep loved ones safe. But how can she make a choice that will break one heart…and complete another?

Andy's past isn't all roses and daffodils as we know and in CARPE DEMON she comes face to face with some pretty hard memories. She has to work through not only her feelings, but how she will defeat one of the foes that made her life miserable all those years ago. You have a lot of action to look forward too.

The love triangle continues in CARPE DEMON and it's probably my least favorite part of the book because I hate the whole situation that Andy is put in. I wish the relationship between Andy and Wick was easier, but with him having Lucien controlling him, I just don't ever see them being able to be happy or comfortable together. As for Tristan, I still don't know how I feel about him. I don't think we have had enough one-on-one time for me to make an educated decision of if I like him with Andy or not. He SEEMS to really care for her, but I just see a giant mystery when it comes to him.

Although it was hard for Andy, I really liked the ending. Nothing will be easy for her going forward, but she is such a strong person and I think she will continue to handle her situation just like she has handled everything else that was thrown at her. The next book should be doubly interesting though!

I gave it 4/5 stars

Claudia De Santos has always looked out for every witch but herself. She fought from the shadows as her coven turned dark, and with a little help from her half witch/half alpha werewolf cousin, Tessa, Claudia is doing everything she can to keep her friends and family in the light.

Now the coven has splintered into two factions: Luciana’s army of witches wielding dark magic, and Claudia’s few stragglers who fight with the wolves. War is coming, and it won’t be much of a battle if Claudia can’t find the spells to counteract Luciana’s demonic power.

The answers lie in ancient magic, and Claudia must journey to Peru to rediscover what the Inca mages knew. Fighting evil will require a pure spirit, but her quest is full of temptations, including a handsome Peruvian guide with secrets of his own.

As she struggles to gain the knowledge her friends will need in the coming battle, conflict rages in Claudia’s heart. Following through with her arranged marriage could bring hope and more allies to the side of good, but at the cost of her own happiness. Should Claudia stay on the same path of duty she’s always walked or risk it all—her life and the futures of all brujos—for a chance at something more?

I'm not going to lie, I was upset and thinking about not reading BRUJA when I found out that Tessa and Dastien's binding was going to be dragged out even longer than it already was with BRUJA's addition to the series, but I am happy to say I am glad I read it anyways.

We have met Claudia and we have gotten to know her a little bit from earlier books in the series, but BRUJA really let us dive into her personality and I have to say I really enjoyed it. She started off as one person and ended the book as a totally different STRONGER person with someone fantastic by her side. Lucas was protective yet willing to give Claudia her space from the moment he met her. They had a great chemistry and really complement each other.

BRUJA was fast paced with a lot of action and character development. I liked to location and I thought the author did a really good job of keeping the characters on track with their mission while developing their feelings and the relationship.

I am looking forward to being back in TEXAS with Tessa and her friends and I am really looking forward to seeing them take care of Lucinda, it has to happen eventually right? We did find out an interesting fact about the binding ceremony in BRUJA, so I have a few questions that I am hoping will be revealed in ALPHA UNLEASHED.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview & Giveaway: The Violet Hour by Andrea L Wells

UFI welcomes Author Andrea L. Wells. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I'm the atypical poet that can do math. Most people are surprised to learn that I used to manage a very large jewelry retail store and have sold some pretty spectacular diamonds over the years.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Anything. I’m totally down for anything and that is why I have great stories to tell. I’m also completely content doing absolutely nothing which is why I have time to write those stories down.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Those lightbulb moments when something totally unexpected comes together so perfectly you sit back and marvel.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

It almost always has to be either gloomy and rainy outside or the middle-of-the-night for me to even entertain sitting down to write.  I also have to listen to music while I write.  I assemble songs in a playlist based on the moods of the storyline and/or characters.  I can listen to the same song over and over again for hours while I write.  You said see the number of times certain songs have been played.  I also have to drink coffee – cold, with flavored creamer or chai tea.  I know I know... that sounds so hipster.  Sorry.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I’ll read anything – especially if someone recommends it to me (feel free to jump on my website or social media pages and send me your recommendations for my next read!) but if you turn me loose in a bookstore my go-to genre, of course, is Young Adult Paranormal Romance.

Obviously one of the most well-known authors in that genre and perhaps on earth is Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight Series was groundbreaking in her ability to inspire such enthusiasm and fan commitment. I respect that she stood her ground and branched out after the Twilight Series with The Host, despite the fact she could have continued Twilight for the next decade and possibly beyond.

I actually don’t have a “favorite” book in any genre parse – because I can always find good in someone’s writing. Sure, there are some pieces of work out there that could use a hand and then there are those exceptionally well written books, but, in my mind, if anyone has enough gumption to sit down and write a story, I admire that and I’ll read their work. I would never knock someone for standing behind something they believed in and obviously loved. I think this mindset makes it rather difficult for me to pick just one “favorite.”

What can I say… this chick loves books!

How would you pitch The Violet Hour Series to someone who has not heard of it before?

The Violet Hour is not just a coming of age moment, but really for anyone on the cusp of something new and dangerous and looking for the inspiration to hold out for one more fighting day. My idea was to capture that unique experience – those rare moments in life where everything that comes after will be defined by that event. Most people in those moments describe it as fate, as if they have no control. If there was one belief I wanted to share with others it is that you never have no control, there is no fate... you have the strength to change the course of your own future, even if it involved werewolves.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Violet Hour Series is set in?

The lights of Hollywood meet the werewolf filled mountains of Wyoming.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

My favorite is easily Logan Keller. On the outside, she seems like the popular girl that everyone wanted to be in high school, but on the inside she is the most humble, fair, and loyal character in the novel. If there is one person that has a solid moral center and sticks to her guns, it is Logan.

Xavier was easily the most difficult because he is irredeemably unpleasant. It could seem that he is one-dimensional because you don't know his backstory, but we dive into that with Book #2 in the series. The more you know about him, the more there is to dislike.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

The Violet Hour Series is a total of 3 books starting, of course, with The Violet Hour. This series is going to last over the course of the next year or so as I wrap up and release Book #2 and finish writing and release Book #3.  These books are all told from the prospective of Logan, but through the writing process, I have outlined ideas/stories told from the prospective of other characters in the series.  There’s always the possibility that one of those stories could set fire in my mind – forcing me to tell it.

The Violet Hour
The Violet Hour #1
Still shocked over her mother’s mysterious death, California socialite Logan Keller is handed a one-way ticket to her long lost roots in Wyoming where love, deceit and danger await. Though she could forget everything staring into Luke Callahan’s eyes, Logan is quickly thrust into a fight for survival. Taking fate into her own hands, she begins unraveling the dangerous deceptions that abound at every turn. Her father is keeping secrets and Luke is keeping more. But Logan is keeping the biggest secret of them all.

The Violet Hour is a page-turning captivating twist of young romance and the supernatural.
Excerpt:
I sat up and pulled my knees in close to my chest.  Electricity flared in the air as Luke inhaled.
“You know, Logan, you’re not who I expected you to be,” he said, taking a long thought-filled pause.  “I thought the next twelve months were going to be hell living with a California socialite, but you’re pretty amazing.  I guess I owe you an apology.”
“So, it’s a good thing that I’m nothing like you expected?” I asked.
“It’s a really, really good thing.”
As I started to smile back he craned his neck to look away from me.  His eyes focused.  Something black flashed across the road but I was more scared by Luke’s reaction.  The warmth had vanished from Luke in a heartbeat.  The object stopped moving toward us when it got to an opening between the trees.  Even though I could feel Luke’s concern, I leaned forward toward the window, curious.  It was a wolf – a really big wolf, staring directly at us with bright green eyes.  It was close enough I could see quick breaths escape into the crisp rain-drenched air.  I was startled when the engine roared to life.  Luke threw the car into reverse, and I nearly slammed into the dash as the sound of gravel scattered everywhere.  He quickly jockeyed around and pulled back onto the road heading home.  I kept my eyes on the wolf until he was no longer in sight.
“Was that a wolf?” I asked.  Everything happened so quickly, I had to be sure.
“Yes,” he spit.
“I’ve never seen a wolf before – that thing was huge.”
Luke immediately turned to look at me with an expression that I couldn’t begin to read.
“What’s going on?” I pressed, puzzled.
When he looked toward the road and didn’t answer, I knew my question needed to be more specific to get results.
“Why are you freaking out?  It was just a wolf.”  I was worried.  He had gone from warm and comforting to moody and distant over such a small thing and I second-guessed how quickly I had fallen for him.
“Because I need to get you home, it’s getting late,” he muttered, failing to control his tone.
“That doesn’t make any sense, Luke.  I have no curfew and you flaked as soon as you saw the wolf.”
“Wolves are dangerous.”
“We were in the car,” I countered.
“Doesn’t matter.”

Fairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day.

Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the brooding prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.

Talk about unhappily ever after.

Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called "Kansas." Now it's up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse...before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

Advance Praise for Spelled

“A cute adventure with romance set in a world full of fairy-tale mash-ups. Readers will love Dorthea’s evolution from spoiled princess to strong, confident heroine… For Oz fans, this work is a great clean-read alternative to Danielle Paige’s Dorothy Must Die.” -School Library Journal

“This wickedly funny, fast-paced adventure has it all: brains, courage, and heart. (Plus a kickin’ pair of heels.) .” --Jen Calonita, author of The Secrets of My Hollywood Life and Fairy Tale Reform School series

“Fairy tale survival rule #1, do NOT read this book late at night. You will wake up your entire family with loud laughter. Fairy tale survival rule #2, if you love the Wizard of Oz, clever fairy tale mash-ups, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing what will happen until the very end, you MUST read Spelled.” --J Scott Savage, award winning author of Farworld, Case File 13, and the Mysteries of Cove series.

A hilarious and snarky reimagining of the world of Oz, along with many other fairy tales injected throughout, "Spelled" is one fabulous read…Kick off those silver slippers and tuck in with this wonderful tale!” —Senator Sipes, Lil Book Bug (Palmdale, CA)

Excerpt from Spelled:

Most of the crowd had dispersed. The final few stragglers looked at me with the alltoo-common look of fear mixed with trepidation. Pix ’em. They were just servants. It wasn’t like their opinion mattered.
Only one remained, watching me with open curiosity. He looked to be in his late teens or was magically enhanced to appear so. He could have been a hundred for all I knew. I’d never seen him before in my life. He was handsome enough, for a commoner, even in his worn leather pants and cracked work boots. A foreigner, his hair was unruly and dark auburn, which complemented his tanned but dirt-smudged complexion, though the tall, dark stranger vibe was ruined by his piercing pale blue eyes.
Well, I’d had enough of being a sideshow for the day. “If you’re the new gardener, the hedges are overgrown and in need of a trim.” I pointed in the direction of my father. “While you’re there, you can help the king with the wisps.”
The young man’s expression clouded over, but he didn’t move.
I stamped my foot and pointed more forcefully. “Off with you. Courtyard’s that way. Be sure to clean those awful boots before coming back in.”
“Someone told me I’d find a princess of great worth here. One with the strength to be the hero this realm needs.” He stared at me with those unsettling blue eyes. They were cold, like ice water—made me shiver from head to toe. Then his gaze seemed to search even deeper. Finally, he looked through me, like I was nothing.
In brisk steps, he strode across the marble to the courtyard. But before crossing the threshold, he turned back to glare at me with his lip curled ever so slightly. “It seems she was mistaken.”
Just like that, I had been sifted, weighed, and found wanting.
I felt my own lip curl in response. How rude! Who the Grimm was this peasant to judge me? I was wearing a Glenda original. Original! Not some fairy-godmother knockoff worn by those servant girls turned royal. I was a crown princess, for the love of fairy, and no one dismissed me.
Before I could put the boy in his place—down in the dirt, where he belonged—a clatter came from behind, making me nearly jump out of my shoes. I checked and was relieved that Sterling had simply dropped his sword. By the time I looked back, the gardener was gone.
After stowing his blade, Sterling held up his shield, not in defense of the entrance but so he could look at his reflection. “Clearly he’s blind and doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
I didn’t ask for Sterling’s opinion, but it made me feel better.
Until he opened his mouth again.
“Worth, pffft. I mean, look around at all the jewels. Your palace has everything you could ever want. Honestly, I don’t know what you’re fussing about. Why would anyone want to leave?”
Because a cage is still a cage, no matter how big or glittering the bars are.
And I would find a way free, no matter the cost.
