Promo + Giveaway: Spider's Trap by Jennifer Estep

Spider's Trap
Elemental Assassin #13
Publication date: 7/28/2015
Amazon / Audible / BN / IndieBound / iBooks / Kobo

Keep your friends close but your enemies within stabbing distance.

One important lesson I’ve learned in the assassination business is that to be the best you have to roll with the punches. Now that I’m queen of Ashland’s underworld—by default, not by choice—a lot more punches are being thrown my way. But I suppose that’s the price of victory for taking down some of the underworld’s top dogs. Good thing I have my Ice and Stone magic to help me survive my volatile new position. Just when I think things are finally settling down, someone tries to murder me during a hush-hush underworld meeting. But the real surprise is how strangely familiar my shadowy assailant seems to be.

My job is to maintain order among killers, crooks, and thieves, and soon I’m embroiled in a bloody game where the ability to keep secrets could be the greatest superpower of all. My enemies have all sharpened their knives and laid their traps, waiting for me to fall. But this Spider weaves her own webs of death…
Excerpt #4:
But a few weeks ago, I’d taken down Madeline Magda Monroe, an acid elemental who’d declared herself the new queen of the Ashland underworld, following in the footsteps of her mother, Mab.

Just as I had killed her mother several months earlier, I took out Madeline with my Ice and Stone magic, and with no more Monroes left to grapple for control of the underworld, the other bosses had made me their de facto leader. At least until they started plotting how they could murder me and one of them could seize the throne they all coveted so very much.

I almost wished that one of them would succeed in putting me out of my misery.

Contrary to popular belief, being the head of the Ashland underworld was not a bed of roses. It wasn’t even a bed of thorns. It was just a giant headache—like the one throbbing in my temples right now.

I’d thought I’d been a popular target over the summer, but now the bosses sought me out more than ever before. And they actually wanted to talk to me. Incessantly. About business deals and treaties and who was letting their gang members spray-paint rune graffiti in someone else’s territory. As if I actually cared about any of those things. But as the big boss, it was apparently my job to listen. At least, according to Silvio.

Lorelei was the one who’d requested this meeting, although she’d actually approached Phillip about settling the dispute instead of me. Apparently, Lorelei didn’t want to acknowledge my new authority or involve me in her affairs. That, or she just hated me for some reason. Didn’t much matter either way, since I cared as little about her as she did about me.

But Phillip was my friend, and he’d told me about the get-together. So here I was, about to mediate my first big dispute as Gin Blanco, the Spider, new queen of the Ashland underworld. Yeah, me.

Review: Illicit by Madeline Pryce

Illicit
Release Date: June 14, 2015
Publisher: Self-Published
ASIN:   B00ZJMPM48
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Publisher
An angel trapped in darkness, a sinner imprisoned, and a lust borne of destiny.

Eva has no explanation for the tattoo wings shimmering on her back or her ability to heal.

Peter Marx, a reluctant alpha leopard shifter who is more rebel than he is hero doesn't want to rule, and he sure as hell doesn't want to fall in love.

A night of unforgettable passion leads Peter and Eva down a dangerous path. The killer's trap grows ever tighter, forcing the two lovers to fight with everything they have.

Warning: This paranormal romance includes explicit sexual scenes, dirty talk, light bondage, anal sex and dubious consent.

I had a bit of a déjà vu moment when I started reading ILLICIT, the opening bar scene reminded me a lot of another of Madeline's books, WICKED MAGIC, and I had to stop reading for a second to make sure I hadn't already read it. The similarities end there though and I quickly started to enjoy the mystery and danger of the storyline. There were a lot of neat twists thrown in and I enjoyed the characters for the most part.

I am sad to say that I had a big issue with ILLICIT when it came to Peter's character. He could be extremely rude and way rougher than I expected. His treatment of Eva in some scenes was a bit hard to get through. That just isn't my type of love handling. The warning in the blurb is something you should really take to heart before you start reading ILLICIT because I can see some having an even tougher time with a few scenes than I did. Besides those issues I did like Peter when he wasn't being a royal arse. I liked Eva, I thought she had a few moments where she should have kicked Peter to the curb, but for the most part she did a good job of sticking up for herself. The romance between the two was super spicy as you can imagine from a erotic paranormal romance and there are a lot of sex scenes.

The storyline was my favorite part of the story. Madeline is a great storyteller and did a good job of making the story more than just the sex the characters were engaging in. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of the pack included in the story, but I enjoyed the parts where they were present.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Interview: The Blue Effect by Rose Shababy

UFI welcomes Author Rose Shababy. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I worked in the gourmet food industry for years, and have been accused of being a foodie (like that’s a bad thing!). I love to try new foods, and I’m always interested in how things are prepared, especially if I like it, so I can try and recreate it at home.

The downside to this is that I’ve been known to eat out at a mom and pop’s with friends and ask if the guacamole is homemade or where the fish came from. And I am mocked mercilessly for it, usually punctuated with gratuitous eye rolling.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Reading, of course! I also love board games, cards, you name it. We play a lot of Cribbage and Skip-bo around my house, as well as Sorry when we don’t want to think too hard. There is, however, one condition to playing Sorry. When you knock someone back to start, it must be accompanied with as snarky a “Sorry,” as possible. It makes it hard to get through a game without giggling madly.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I love being able to take the stories out of my head and them down on paper. It’s been a longtime dream of mine to be an author, and it feels so amazing to complete a book, but the absolute best is the feedback from the readers. I write for me, but I write for the readers as well, and knowing there are others who appreciate and relate to what I’m writing feels better than I ever expected. The first time I received a “fan letter,” I almost peed myself from excitement.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Bailey’s in my coffee? Joking, joking. No, I don’t have any steadfast routine, although I do prefer to be in my office away from distractions.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

If you ask me, some of the hottest new stuff out right now is the Graveyard Guardian series by Jennifer Malone Wright and the Six Savior series by Carly Fall. I highly recommend both.

How would you pitch The Blue Effect to someone who has not heard of it before?

The Blue Effect is a cross between Maximum Ride and Sin City. Intrigue and conspiracy mixed with a gritty backdrop, filled with antiheroes, action, romance and humor. Blue Brennan is a lost girl trying to find herself just like so many of us, and yearning to be something more. She’s no angel, but she’s honest, raw, brash and vulnerable. When she meets Kasey she begins to see her own potential, and the love story begins, but it’s not as much a love story about her and Kasey as it is about her learning to love herself.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Blue Effect is set in?

This is a contemporary story set in present day Seattle. The characters are part of a new species they call Homo altius, meaning Higher Man. They’ve developed certain abilities, but there are no capes, or tights, or blue skin in this story. They are still regular people who have to pay bills and cook and clean and pee, just like the rest of us.

Do you have a favorite scene in The Blue Effect ?

What a great question! I loved writing this book, and I love Blue, so it’s hard to pick a favorite scene. The excerpt provided is one of my favorite scenes, but I also love the last two chapters. That’s when the tension reaches its height and Blue really shines.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Blue, without a doubt. I love her so much! I loved being able to write her inner dialogue, as well as letting her express herself. She has a major potty mouth, and a sardonic world view, both much like my own.

I also liked creating the character of Kasey, although I found him the most difficult. I wanted him to have integrity and a sort of nobility, without being too sappy. It was a difficult undertaking, one that I hope I’ve accomplished. He’s kind of the nerd of the group, and it was important to me to portray him as such, as well as be an attractive character that gets the girl.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I’m working on book two in my Renegade Heroes series, The After Effect. This book picks up where The Blue Effect left off, and we have the opportunity to get a deeper look at Kasey and his past. We also meet a new hero, as well as a new villain, and move to the forests of northern Idaho. It’s coming along swimmingly, and hopefully will be out before the end of the year!

Rose has a deep love of all things Star Trek and yearns to travel the heavens, as well as an intense desire to be bitten by a radioactive spider.

Unfortunately she sucks at science and math so she hasn’t been able bring her dreams to life, instead living vicariously through books, comics, television and film. She hopes to someday make a million dollars so she can afford to buy her way to the international space station, but she’d settle for being able to fly around the world and leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Rose also loves to cook and worked for years in a gourmet Italian grocery and deli where she learned to hone her skills. She prepares culinary masterpieces for her family, but fervently wishes the dishes would wash themselves. Especially now that her dishwashers/children are nearly grown and only one still lives at home.

Rose likes to use her free time wisely. For instance, she likes to daydream, will often read for hours until she falls asleep on the couch with an electric blanket and a warm tabby cat curled up on her hip, as well as spending cozy weekend days watching Syfy movies like Sharknado and Mega Piranha with her husband.

If Rose were a cartoon animal, she’d prefer to be a wise old owl or a sleek and sexy jaguar, but in reality she’d probably be a myopic mole with coke-bottle glasses.

Excerpt:
“How do you do that?” I asked, finding my voice. I looked around the dance floor, at all the people frozen like 3D photographs. It didn’t make sense that I wasn’t scared by the situation at hand, but fear didn’t factor into my emotional state at all. I also wondered what it would be like to walk through the crowd and note all their bodily contortions and facial expressions, but I held back. At the moment I was more interested in hearing what this man had to say. “How did you make everything stop?”
“As to how I do what I do, I can only tell you that I do it. I know someone that can explain the how better than I. As to this,” he waggled a finger toward the still figures in the room, “this is all you. I can only help you … amplify what you had inside you to begin with.”
It was my turn to laugh, but it was humorless and harsh. “What are you talking about?”
“You have felt different all your life, no?”
“Sure. But doesn’t everybody?” I answered with an eye roll and looked around the room again. “Look at these morons. They’re all playing dress up, hiding their real selves from each other. But the truth is they’re desperate to find someone to love them. Hoping they’ll be important to someone, anyone, because they sure as hell don’t feel important to themselves. Hoping they’ll actually matter. Hoping that someone can take away the emptiness they feel every time they look in the mirror.”
He shook his head. “You are talking about yourself, not them. And they are not all like that. They are not the lifeless paper dolls you think they are, not even the ones trying so hard to stand out. And neither are you.”
His words confused me, and I felt myself growing angry. “Who are you?” I didn’t like the things he made me feel anymore, and I longed for the simplicity of the liquored-up daze I’d enjoyed earlier. I wanted to run away from him, but in the same moment I realized that nothing could have made me turn away from this strange man.
“My name is Kasimir Korsak. My friends call my Kasey. I would very much like to include you in that group.”
I shook my head. “If you know so much about me, you would know that I don’t have friends.” I put as much disdain into the last word as I could. I might want to find out more about the things that were happening, but that didn’t mean I trusted him. “Besides, what possible reason do I have to believe anything you say?”
His eyes were still steady on mine when he spoke. “You already trust me, Blue. You do not want to admit it because I am a stranger, but deep down you believe me because you hear truth in my words. You look around the room and see truth. You are different. Special.” He held out his hands, palms up in a gesture of openness. “You are like me, only you have not learned how to use your abilities yet.”
Abilities? I gaped at him. What the hell does that mean?
We stood in the strange, echoless silence, neither of us taking our eyes off the other. I wanted his words to be true. I wanted the differentness I’d always felt to be something special, wanted it with an urgency that pierced through the numbness. In the few moments I’d spent with this man I’d felt more emotions than I’d felt in years.
The realization finally brought forth fear, but it also brought excitement, and I wanted more. If his words were true, and he and I were alike, maybe that meant I actually belonged somewhere.
“I can show you if you let me.” He smiled again and as we stared at one another, thoughts that weren’t mine raced through my head.
Give me a chance to show you. There are others like us. You do not have to be alone anymore.
“Why should I?”
“What are your options?” He smiled. “Someone once said, ‘I may never be what I want to be, what I ought to be, but how will I know unless I try?’ That is all I am asking you to do, try.”
“Who said that?”
He grinned wider. “A superhero.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re kidding, right? This isn’t a fucking comic book.”

Wisps buzzed through the air, their musical humming rising in pitch as they darted in for a closer look.  I sat on the mossy embankment and smiled, watching the playful wisps.
With my father’s key helping to guide us, we’d left the deadly bog and its poisonous gas behind.  I breathed deeply, and let out a happy sigh.
“I don’t know what you’re so happy about,” Torn said, shaking water from his hair.  “We’re covered in mud and smell like troll farts.”
It was true.  The sulfurous swamp gasses did smell an awful lot like something that would come out of Marvin after he ate an entire cauldron of Kaye’s chili, but I didn’t care.  We were alive.  And so far, my wisp brethren weren’t trying to kill me.
I’m not sure what it said about my life that the lack of fratricide upon my homecoming made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  Probably best not to think too much about it, and just enjoy the moment.
I shrugged, and kept on smiling.
“Well don’t get too comfortable, Fish Breath is on his way over with his pensive face,” Torn said.
He stalked off to sit on a rock a few paces away, but I shrugged again and closed my eyes, turning my face to the moon and stars above us.  I wasn’t going to let Torn ruin this moment.
“Are you feeling well?” Ceff asked, settling on the mossy ground beside me.
I cracked an eye open, grinning from ear to ear.
“I feel great, never better,” I said.  In fact, I felt a bit dizzy and my lips tingled, like I’d had too much to drink.  Only I would get buzzed off the buzzing of wisps.  “Just buzzed off the buzzing.”
I hiccupped, and giggled, the laugh coming out in an undignified snort that startled the nearest wisps.
“Are you sure that you are not angry, or afraid?” he asked.
I forced myself to look up into Ceff’s face.  His head was titled to the side, as if listening for something, but his attention was focused solely on me.
“I’m fiiine, really,” I said, waving a hand.  My eyes widened, and I let out another giggle.  “I’m glowing.”
“Which is probably what has his highness’ panties in a bunch,” Torn said, coming over to tower above me, arms crossed.  “There is something weird about seeing you smile like that, especially when you’re glowing.”
     “What?” I asked.  “I smile.”
“Almost never, and when you do, it’s usually because you’re killing something,” he said.  “Not that I’m judging.  I’m just saying Fish Breath has a point.  You’re different.”
“She is high on power,” Ceff said, eyes going tight.  “I should have recognized the signs sooner, but I was focused on our flight through the bog, and then with releasing the water magic that held our masks together.”
“You think it’s the wisps?” Torn asked.
“That would be my guess,” Ceff said, rubbing his jaw.
“This didn’t happen after our run in with those wisps in Ocean Overlook cemetery, did it?” Torn asked.
“No,” Ceff said.  “Not that we noticed.  But Ivy was badly wounded that night, and took days to recover consciousness.  And…I…I was not at my most attentive.”
That was the night that I’d killed his ex-wife.  Melusine may have been the raging psychotic bitch who’d murdered his children, and tried to kill us as well, but that didn’t mean her death had been easy on Ceff.
The memory of Ceff’s grief flooded me, pushing the giddiness away.
“I think…I think I’m back to normal now,” I said.  I yawned, covering my mouth with the back of my gloved hand.  Ignoring the encroaching bone deep fatigue, I tried to pull myself to my feet, but sank back down when a wave of dizziness nearly toppled me over.  “I just need a minute.”
“You are exhausted,” Ceff said, brow wrinkling.  “Rest here.  I will keep first watch.”
“But my father’s court…” I said, but my words were cut short by another yawn.
“Will still be there tomorrow,” Torn said.
“Plus, I can scout ahead while you sleep,” Ceff said.  “We will make better progress if we are rested and certain of the path ahead.”
“Fine,” I said, eyes fluttering closed.  “But just a quick nap.”
The last thing I saw, before losing myself to the darkness of sleep, was a cloud of wisps hovering over me, lending me their warmth…and their power.

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Angel Lover by Tricia Skinner

UFI welcomes Author Tricia Skinner. Thanks for Joining us!!

Four Least Favorite Character Types in Stories
by Tricia Skinner, author of Angel Lover

I'm not sure when I became annoyed with certain character types in stories, but let me tell you, annoyed I was. You see, I can read anything as long as I dig the story and can feel something for the characters. When certain traits pop up, my first reaction is to rage against the writing gods, "Why doth thou torture me?"

Melodramatic? Yep, but still annoyed. (wink) Here's what tends to set me off.

Too Stupid To Live

Usually it's the heroine who gets this trait. She's the woman who has a drug cartel on her trail, but she decides to go to her best friend's house for a pizza party. Or she sneaks away from the hero's protection because she left her favorite sweater at her house.

You want to kill her. I want to kill her. She should die for her stupidity. We suffer through her temper tantrums and pouting. She nags the hero ceaselessly, ignores every survival instinct she has, and then she gets in trouble. Please let her die, fellow authors.

Timid Friend Who Becomes A Killing Machine

I read a book where the heroine's best pal was the kind of guy who'd get stuffed in a locker in school. Stereotypical nerd with a secret crush on the heroine. When she got in trouble (see Too Stupid To Live), this guy turned into Rambo Nerd. He grabbed a weapon and followed the hero to rescue the girl.

Did you roll your eyes? I did. Nothing is wrong with a weaker guy finding courage to help, but there's no damn way he's a weapons expert and can disable bombs with zero training. Did he Google that knowledge on his smartphone?

Crybaby Villains

Another book I read had a villain who wanted the heroine so he could take over her wealthy father's properties. She refused to marry him. What did he do? He sulked like a child. Sulked! His whole storyline was him whining about why she would refuse him and how he'd make her pay. Come on. I need a villain who doesn't need diapers.

Stupid Alpha Heroes

In a historical I recently finished, the alpha hero fell in love with a true beauty. She had been through hell, but she gave her love to a man so scared of emotions that the whole story actually worked because it was a struggle to get them together. Imagine my dismay, after almost 600 pages, when one out of the blue rumor about the now-wife of the alpha hero sent that idiot into a jealous tirade. He left her, defenseless and out in the cold, because someone said they thought she had feelings for another guy.

Insert hair pulling now. That is a weak excuse to add one more nugget of conflict. I was exhausted after reading 600 pages only to get kicked in my girly parts with the old "You betrayed me!" action of the alpha. No. Just no.

So, do you have any character types that make you claw at your eyes, screaming at the injustice?

Angel Lover
Angel Assassins #2
Amazon BN Entangled

The Nephilim are bound. Their powers cursed. But half-angel Kasdeja will do anything to free them from Heaven's tyranny. When Kas is approached by a striking, mysterious woman, she tells him his greatest enemies hold the key to his freedom.

Mariel keeps herself shrouded in secrets, using them to hide her true self. For she is not just employed by the Renegades--enemy fallen angels—she is a double agent, working on the sly for Heaven. Her directive is to seduce the gorgeous Nephilim—despite her insecurity about such sensual acts.

For Mariel is playing a dangerous game, and falling for Kas could only cause trouble; her assignment isn't just seduction. It's destruction.
Teaser #3

“Have you seen the shirt you’re wearing?” she replied, her smoky tone unimpressed.
“This?” Kas dipped his chin and checked his tie-dye. “A classic. Dylan wore one.”
“Then I recommend you return it to him.”

 Excerpt #2

The Nephilim grabbed Mariel's shoulder and squeezed. “You’re coming with me.”

Training instincts kicked in. She slammed her elbow into his abdomen and cracked the back of her fist into his throat. Kasdeja coughed but recovered too quickly. He reached for her again, and she blocked his arm with hers. He switched to his other arm, and she matched the move.

She had once fought demons on the plains of Damascus. She’d hunted dark elves in their underground cities. She’d survived the ambush that had left her team—her friends— dead. No way on earth would a lone Nephilim bring her down.

Desperation fed her, and Mariel pressed her attack, but suppressed her strength. If she could do some damage, she’d make it back to the Renegades while Kasdeja remained alive. She spun a roundhouse kick toward the half angel’s stomach, but he knocked her leg aside. He smoothly dodged her punches but purposely avoided leveling a few of his own.

She grappled for a way to end the fight. This was a mistake, and she wondered why she refused to cause him unnecessary harm. Feigning a jab to the left, she struck his face on the right. His head snapped to the side, his long, loose hair flying. A lucky hit.

Kasdeja swept one of her legs. Twisting, she narrowly missed a face-plant into the pavement and rolled away from his boot before it collided with her side.

The fight had moved them deeper into the parking lot. Half a dozen cars and trucks, parked inside and outside the painted lines, made maneuvering dicey. The Nephilim’s arm came around faster than she expected and slapped her into a spin.

Mariel reached toward the blades hidden in her boots but changed her mind. She stared at him and caught the stormy menace in his eyes. Distracted, she failed to avoid the back of his arm as it drove into her stomach.

The air whooshed from her lungs and Kasdeja pressed in, not giving her time to regain a breath. He locked his large hands over her wrists, lifted her off her feet, and shoved her, suspended by her wrists, against a brick wall. A sunburst exploded behind her eyes. Agony blasted through her body and escaped her mouth in a sharp cry.

“Damn you. I should bury you,” the assassin said in a choppy voice.
