Of Flame and Light
Weird Girls #7

Taran Wird holds the unique ability to conjure fire and lightning. She is mated to Gemini, Second in Command to the Squaw Valley Pack of the Lake Tahoe Region, and the sole werewolf to possess the ability to split into two wolves. And although they are mates, Taran’s insecurities have driven them apart. Devastated by an injury that left her with a zombie-like limb, Taran struggles to regain command over her magic. But when her arm and her power turn against her, lashing out on those she most loves, she knows she can no longer carry this burden alone. Not that she likes the alternative. The only way to regain control of her magic is to align and learn from the local coven of witches―the very ones who sought to banish her when she and her three unique sisters first moved to the mystical region. But although Taran is trying, the teachings don’t come easy, and the tasks leave her weak and emotionally shattered. Yet Taran must learn and learn fast. Time is running out. The fire she once mastered so easily has become her greatest adversary and is now slowly burning her alive . . .

Of Flame And Light Excerpt

“You guys ready?” I ask, forcing myself to stand slightly ahead of Bren.
Shayna fumbles through her backpack and pulls out a box of toothpicks before passing the heavy pack to Emme. Emme doesn’t need her hands free to kick ass, but Shayna does.
“So what’s the plan, dudes?” Shayna asks. “Onward and upward?”
“Yeah,” I answer, shrugging when Bren looks at me. “This isn’t the good kind of magic, Bren. With all the evil set to rise, and the bad guys needing dark witches to make it happen, you know our motto: no stone left unturned, and no scaries left to chew on our insides.”
He snags my elbow when I start to head for the dense brush. “If we can, I’ll let you make the capture. It’s the only way to keep Genevieve from sinking her teeth into you. But that thing in there—if it’s as bad as I think it is—there’s no bringing her home alive, got me? I’ll make the kill if it comes down to it.”
He doesn’t think I can take her, much less kill her. And maybe he’s right. But that doesn’t mean we can turn our backs and pretend she’s not here.
I kick at the dirt at my feet. I don’t like to kill, despite what people think and despite that it’s something I’m freakishly good at. I’ve had plenty of practice, believe me. My first kill occurred when I was just a teen, the second, moments after. It was the right thing to do given what happened. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t sick to my gut. I burned them with enough heat to smoke their chests, allowing them to feel every ounce of pain they caused me and my sisters. Too many followed after that, enough that I’ve lost count. But as much as the dead mark my bones, and stay a part of me, I’ll do it again if I have to.
I meet Bren’s face. “Dead or alive, we have to take care of Savana and whoever else might be helping her.”
“Even if it means you get stuck serving Genevieve?” he presses.
He’s not asking. He knows taking out Savana is the right thing to do. He’s just making sure we’re all on the same page. “Yes,” I answer.

Interview + Giveaway: Blood Bound by Traci Douglass

UFI welcomes Author Traci Douglass. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

Hmm. Great question. I have two dogs, a Pomeranian named Clara and a Chihuahua mix named Zoey, I love ballroom dancing and behind-the-scenes documentaries, and my favorite color is blue.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

My guilty pleasures are watching The Bachelor/Bachelorette and cooking. I’m trying to increase my culinary skills. ☺

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I love exploring characters and worlds that are different from mine.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not necessarily. I just need my laptop, my coffee, my music and earbuds (to drowned out reality) and that’s about it.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Karen Marie Moning, JR Ward, Stacia Kane, Nicole Peeler, Jaye Wells, Jennifer Ashley’s shifter series, Mary Janice Davidson. I could go on and on… ☺

How would you pitch Blood Bound to someone who has not heard of it before?

Forbidden, white-hot passion flares between a sheltered schoolteacher and a half-breed demon who must work together to find her missing sister and achieve his goals for justice. Supernatural meets Sons of Anarchy with a touch of Star Wars Space Bar and Wild, Wild West thrown in for fun.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Blood Bound is set in?

I created a fictional town in Wyoming for the series called Salvation. I based it off of several real-life small towns in the area and really wanted to give the books a feel of reality. I also wanted to give the gang’s hangout, Seven, a sort of old-world wild west saloon type feel. Like it’s a place where time and space kind of warp and anything can happen (and does…LOL!)

Do you have a favorite scene in Blood Bound?

I’d have to say that’s a tie between the opening scene, where the reader gets to experience Salvation, Wyoming and Seven through the heroine’s eyes, and then the first POV scene with Dante, where you get your introduction to his inner world and also meet my villain, Basher.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I have to say, I do love writing villains. There’s just something so fun and freeing about a person who does exactly what they want, says what they want, and basically doesn’t care. I had a blast writing both Argus and Satan in my Seven Seals Series, and love the scenes with Basher in the Blood Ravagers Trilogy too (though we don’t actually get his POV).

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Books One through Three of my Seven Seals Series are out now. Books Two and Three of the Blood Ravagers Trilogy—Dex and Rev’s stories—will be out in 2017 from Tule Publishing!

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today and Happy Reading!

Blood Bound
Blood Ravagers #1
Amazon BN iBooks
Tule Publishing

Anna Frost had a bad feeling when her twin sister, Liz, told her she’d run off with a member of the notorious Otherworld biker gang, the Blood Ravagers. And her unease skyrockets when her sister subsequently vanishes. The police have no authority and little interest, so Anna decides to take matters into her own hands by infiltrating the group to discover for herself what happened to Liz, where she meets….

Dante, half demon, half human. A mix of two worlds, accepted by neither, he’s had no choice but to learn the hard way how to play whatever side of the fence kept him alive during his nearly 500 years of existence. Now, as second-in-command of the Blood Ravagers biker gang, his survival depends on keeping his humanity a secret. Dante’s ultimate goal is to fulfill the vows he made over two centuries ago to create a world where half-breeds can live in safety and equality.

But when sheltered schoolteacher Anna finds unexpected, white-hot passion in the arms of Dante, will her quest for the truth cost him more than he ever bargained for? Or will they find a way to save Liz – and their love – together?

Excerpt #2:

“Do you know why they call this place Seven?”
“It’s the magic number?”
His expression remained flat.
Anna cleared her throat, doing her best to hide the fact her knees were quaking. “Something to do with poker, maybe?”
The man released her arm and stepped closer. For each step he took, she retreated, until the cold stone wall pressed against her back, preventing escape. He stopped several inches in front of her, the intense heat of him searing her front. Close enough for her to smell his scent—cloves and smoke and clean, aroused male. Once upon a time, he would’ve been exactly the kind of guy she would’ve gone for—all dark and erotic and alpha sexy. The kind of man who filled her dark fantasies, who would take control and appease her secret cravings for pain while giving her the ultimate pleasure in return.
She gasped and shrank away.
No one knew about her fetishes. Those she kept private and locked away.
They were far too dangerous.
Just like her past, her talents, her true essence.
“Seven is indeed a magic number. But not in the way you think.” Frowning, he reached out and toyed with a lock of hair from her wig, then traced a fingertip down her cheek. The crimson flames flared hotter in his eyes before vanishing once more—tempting, elusive, hypnotic. “Are you familiar with the Nine Circles of Hell?”
“The Inferno, you mean?” Yeah, she’d read it. Back in high school or maybe college, she couldn’t remember. Couldn’t seem to concentrate on anything except his fingertip on her skin—stroking, stroking, stroking.
“Yes.” He smiled again, slowly, his voice emerging as little more than a purr. Thick, hot lust pooled low in her abdomen at the sensual promise in his tone. Anna shouldn’t want this, shouldn’t want him, but she did. “Pleasure and pain.”
“What?”
“To experience extreme pleasure, one must first endure pain.”
It was as if her soul had been laid bare before him. She’d never told anyone about the cutting, had hidden her scars for years. Never told anyone about her overwhelming desire to submit, to have someone else take charge for a while, take away her burden of responsibility—if only for a few blissful hours—and just allow her to feel, to be, to live. Live like she had before tragedy had struck and she’d set aside her wants and needs for the greater good…
The more he talked the more her traitorous body fell under his spell. Moisture gathered between her legs and her nipples hardened against the soft cotton of her shirt. Anna couldn’t remember ever being this turned on.
Thankfully, he walked away before she climaxed on the spot.
“What does this bar have to do with the circles of hell?” she asked, once she could breathe.
“Number seven.”
“What?” She glanced toward the window again, considered jumping then decided breaking both of her legs probably wouldn’t help her escape.
A loud crack snapped through the room.
Oh, Lord.
The man had a whip. Her tingling knees threatened to buckle.
“The seventh circle of hell.”  He wrapped the leather fall around his hand. “Violence. This club. Seven. It is home to all the most interesting sinners.”
Okay. Yeah. She had to escape Mr. Tall, Dark, and Dominant before she was kneeling at his feet, begging him for mercy. “Maybe I should leave now?”
“Yes.” He stood a good foot taller than her five-foot-three-inch height and his shoulder-length black curls all but begged her to tousle them, begged her to fist them tight in her hands while he beat her then fucked her silly. Her fingers twitched as he leaned closer, his breath ghosting across her cheek as he whispered, “Yes, perhaps you should, tu effapyfs.”

Review: Sundered by Shannon Mayer

Sundered
Release Date: October 11, 2016
Publisher: HiJinks Ink Publishing
ISBN13:  9781987933208
Genre: Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

"My name is Mara, and I want desperately to become a mother."
All of my dreams were dashed when the world was promised hope but instead became a place of danger, death . . . and monsters.

Living in a rural part of Canada, I thought life with my adoring husband was finally moving in the right direction. We had an idyllic home, friends, and plans for a future together.

The only thing missing, was the child we both so desperately wanted.

Hope came in the form of a single medical miracle. Yet the drug was not as it seemed and instead of healing, it beget a world of monsters.

Now we must find the will and strength to survive with only each other to hold onto.

But a deadly secret threatens our love and very survival ...

Author Warning: This book has a cliffhanger. Proceed with caution as you may fall off the edge screaming for more.

Even if you failed to read the book blurb for SUNDERED, you would know that the miracle drug  wasn't the miracle everyone thought it would be. SUNDERED ended up being a quick, easy flowing, read with danger and a sweet romance.

The story flowed nicely. It was a bit slow at some points, but it kept me interested. Mara and Sebastian were both sweet. They love each other a lot and it shows in everything they do. They have to work through some hard times, but seem to grow stronger as the book goes on even with everything that is working against them. There are two furry friends introduced in SUNDERED and I loved them. They were so in tune with the world and willing to do anything to protect their masters. I wish I could reach into the pages and bring them home with me.

I had a few complaints while reading SUNDERED. I thought there were some stupid mistakes made. When you are told that the shot you are waiting to get is being recalled for unknown reasons, you should probably not beg for one anyways then proceed to give it to yourself. You HAVE to know that it might be recalled for a very good reason. Common sense goes a long way. Another thing, maybe tell your wife your becoming one of the things that's outside your gate so she can prepare better. I found Mara to be extremely whiny at times. For good reason at a few points, but sometimes you just have to live and stop wallowing in self-pity.

There were a few issues, but at the end of SUNDERED—which ends on a major cliffhanger— wanted more. That's a win in my book.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: Gemina by Amie Kaufman + Jay Kristoff

UFI welcomes Author Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff . Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

Good question! Jay used to be in a band (and he had looooong hair), and Amie used to work as a sailing coach!

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

We’re often on deadline, so when we get downtime, we get pretty excited. The list usually goes something like this: reading, seeing all the friends who thought we died because we went missing over deadlines, video games, board games, live music gigs. Oh, and sleeeeeeeep.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Co-authoring is very different to writing something solo, which means it comes with different favourite parts. When it comes to co-authoring, we both love the fact that we can hand the book back and forth every day and get instant feedback. There’s nothing like writing a scene, and then finding out straight away that you punched the other one in the feels.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not really – we can both write pretty much anywhere, any time. We often have to work while we’re on tour or on the road, so we’ve learned to be flexible. If we get our choice, though, we both prefer to write at home, hanging out with our dogs. (Our dogs think we have the best jobs ever, because they get to lie on top of us for hours while we don’t move.)

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Can we call Ransom Riggs’s books paranormal? If so, he’s definitely on the list! Also lots of stuff by Sarah Rees Brennan. We’d add in Kiersten White and Laini Taylor’s work as well, and Victoria Schwab’s latest book, This Savage Song, is high on our to-read lists.

How would you pitch The Illuminae Files series to someone who has not heard of it before?

We like to describe Illuminae as ‘Battlestar Galactica meets Ten Things I Hate About You’, and its sequel, Gemina, is a little bit like ‘Die Hard meets Alien’. They’re action/adventure/thriller stories set in space, with lots of romance and explosions.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Illuminae Files series is set in?

The series is set in our own world, but several centuries into the future. Humans have spread throughout the galaxy, jumping through hyperspace to cover vast distances in the blink of an eye. Our particular story starts with the invasion of a planet, and sees our characters run for their lives aboard a refugee fleet, with the enemy in hot pursuit.

Do you have a favorite scene in Gemina?

Aaaaah, that’s really hard! We don’t want to spoil too much, but there’s a fight between our heroine and a mercenary that takes place on a moving train, and it’s epic.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Our favourite is always whoever we’ve most recently written, because you end up falling in love with that character after you spend so much time together. So right now we love Hanna, heroine of book two, because she’s so totally kickass, and defies expectations in a lot of ways. And we love Nik, who seems like a bad boy on the surface, but has a loooot going on. As for the hardest… these books are such a joy to write, that’s difficult to answer!

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Amie already has the Starbound Trilogy out, which is co-authored with Meagan Spooner, and starts with These Broken Stars. Jay has the Lotus War Trilogy, which starts with Stormdancer, and his most recent release is the first in The Nevernight Chronicle, Nevernight, which just came out in August! We’re also already signed up for a new series together, which will start when The Illuminae Files end.

Gemina
The Illuminae Files #2
The highly anticipated sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller that critics are calling “out-of-this-world awesome.”

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.

Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5

The great and prestigious man of science, Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley had somehow made a mistake. I wasn’t good and I wasn’t normal. His experiment had failed.

The tedium and terrors of Josephine "Jo" Hadley's existence within the stone walls of London's Bethnal Asylum are interrupted by a strange visitor, Cora Drummond, a woman who demands to interview one of the asylum's most insane residents. The patient's rantings include tales of ghosts and demons, but it is the bizarre, near-riotous muttering of prophetic nursery rhymes that follow Jo throughout the asylum wards that is most illuminating to Miss Drummond.

Eeeper Weeper, chimney sweeper. Had a wife, but couldn't keep her...

Days later, Jo and her adoptive father receive an invitation to attend an exclusive tea at the prestigious Whitehall Club. But the request for Jo's attendance is more than it might seem. She has caught the attention of a secret branch of government working directly for the queen.

Will Jo Hadley's unusual talent for inciting prophetic nursery rhymes prove useful to the crown? She is given one chance to demonstrate her worth to the Special Paranormal Research Branch, but this is one mission that even the most highly trained operatives might not survive.

Eeper Weeper is a prequel short story in the Whitechapel Paranormal Society series by award-winning author E.J. Stevens. One for Sorrow (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #1) takes place six years after the prequel short story Eeper Weeper (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5).
