Soulwood Book #3

Set in the same world as Faith Hunter’s New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, the third, thrilling Soulwood novel stars Nell Ingram, who draws her powers from deep within the earth.

Nell Ingram has always known she was different. Since she was a child, she’s been able to feel and channel ancient powers from deep within the earth. When she met Jane Yellowrock, her entire life changed, and she was recruited into PsyLED—the Homeland Security division that polices paranormals. But now her newly formed unit is about to take on its toughest case yet.

A powerful senator barely survives an assassination attempt that leaves many others dead—and the house he was visiting burns to the ground. Invisible to security cameras, the assassin literally disappears, and Nell’s team is called in. As they track a killer they know is more—or less—than human, they unravel a web of dark intrigue and malevolent motives that tests them to their limits and beyond.

With so much going on FLAME IN THE DARK takes us even deeper into the world of Soulwood.

FLAME IN THE DARK was not an easy installment for Nell. She has to overcome quite a bit, but evolves with every experience. I always love that Faith Hunter lets us learn about Nell and what she can do right along with her instead of having us play catch up.

Not only is a lot revealed about Nell and what she can do, but the rest of the PsyLED team continues to develop and grow too. I truly enjoy each and every one of them and love learning new things about them. We even get a little bit of progress on a brewing romance in FLAME IN THE DARK.

The storyline is a full one. There are a lot of things happening in FLAME IN THE DARK and although there isn't much downtime, I still found some parts of the book to be a little on the slow side. But even with the slow parts, I still had no problem keeping interested in what was happening. In the future, I would love to see Nell and Jane interacting some more. For now, I will keep my eyes open for book four.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: Fire Born by Rayanne Haines

UFI welcomes Author Rayanne Haines. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I’m the biggest sucker for my pet English bulldog – named Bella Luna. In fact she is even the inspiration for a character in my next book! She is seven and a half. I can’t imagine having a “normal” dog after having her.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I don’t want to be one of those people that says, I don’t have any downtime, but well, it’s harder and harder to come by. Winters in my part of the world (Alberta, Canada) are cold and long. I really enjoy a glass of rum in front of a warm fireplace after an afternoon of snowshoeing. And that happens, like maybe twice a year. But when it does, oh it’s good.
In the summer, I kayak. I make it a priority to get on the river at least once a week. Me and water go hand in hand. Even my bulldog likes it. And she has her own lifejacket!

What is your Favorite part of writing?

When you get in that zone and your characters write the scene for you! It get been terribly frustrating if they change your carefully constructed plot plan, but really that’s part of the magic, isn’t it?

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Yes! I must have quiet. An empty house or office. Writing in a cafĂ© is not for me. and my playlist. Music is vital to setting the mood and I create a playlist for each of my books while defining the plot. Of course, I add to the list often. I also make sure to do some form of physical activity every morning before I begin writing. It helps focus and calm my mind. I find I work out a lot of plot holes while I’m running.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I like Charlaine Harris. I like Patricia Briggs and J.R. Ward. I like Shelley Laurenston. I’m drawn as much to Urban Fantasy as I am to Paranormal Romance.   I’m interested in finding new voices as well—I think Annie Nicholas is fun.

How would you pitch FIRE BORN to someone who has not heard of it before?

Fire Born is a paranormal romance novel and is the first in a four-part series, The Guardians. In this book we meet Alex, newbie immortal,  and Collum, King of the Dragons and Guardian of the Immortals.

Independent, tough as nails, and fierce to her core, Alex Taleisin can't quite believe it when she has to fight for her life against something not-quite-human in the YMCA parking lot.

That's when her aunt lets her in on the family secret. They're immortal--Elementals to be precise, and Alex is the long-lost daughter of the strongest female warrior of their time.

Her guardian (a freaking Dragon!) and the sexiest man Alex has ever seen gives her a choice. Go with him, learn how to control her fire, and find her father's people, or try to survive on her own. It's an easy choice considering she's only twenty-six. And the Elders may already be on her trail thanks to the fight with the nut job in the parking lot kick-starting her dormant DNA.

Enter an insane grandfather, a shifter with a hidden agenda, and a witch with a shoe addiction, and suddenly loner Alex is wishing for a quiet house in the hills with the dragon she's falling for.

But a fight is coming and Alex knows the only way to find her answers is to trust her powers and become the warrior she was destined to be.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that FIRE BORN is set in?

Fire Born is set in our contemporary world. Immortals of all kinds live among us without our knowledge. The Guardians are tasked with keeping the balance and keeping humans oblivious to the immortal creatures living all around them. Magic in plain sight. And no ones the wiser.

Do you have a favorite scene in FIRE BORN?

Probably any scene where Alex is putting Collum in his place. I also love the scene where Alex and Collum meet and she decides to trust him. Another favorite is the scene when they land in England. I think it’s steamy and funny and true to how people would react in that situation.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

So far, the character Mar (Maria Del Voscova) has flown off the page for me. She really seemed to just appear out of nowhere with a fully fleshed out voice. I love this character. I’ve only written the two books in this series. I’m currently working on book three. I think that Domhall will be the most difficult to continue writing. I’m just scratching the surface of his depth and his story. There is a lot to discover.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Magic Born is coming out in late spring 2018. This one is for all the Mar and Neeren fans (I include myself in that list)!
Air Born follows at the end of 2018.
I’ve also written a novel-in-verse title Stained with the Colours of Sunday Morning. It’s not a paranormal romance. That one comes out in April.

Excerpt:

Alex refused to break eye contact. Something inside clawed at her flesh—reaching for the man in front of her. Her knees buckled as he pressed his face to her neck. She held his shoulders as he lifted her, sat her on the kitchen counter, and stepped between her thighs. The whole time he kept breathing in like he was trying to absorb her. His hands were brands on her skin. One palm stroked her back, the other found its way into her hair.
She pressed her body against his, trying to take on his heat. Her breasts crushed against his chest, and she whimpered in the back of her throat. Things like this didn't happen to her. She usually dated journalists with very un-dragon like qualities or weekend mountain men with annoyingly trendy facial hair. She did not get ravished by drop dead, slam-dunk, gorgeous alpha males, in her aunt’s kitchen.
After this morning’s revelations, she was ready for a bit of sinning. She nipped at his neck. His grip tightened as he growled low and deep. Somewhere in the back of her mind, Alex realized she was ready to have sex with a stranger on her aunt’s kitchen counter, with said aunt in the other room, perhaps even on her way back to this room. Awareness crashed in with a resounding thud.
He stepped back and shoved his hands through his hair in jerky movements before drawing a ragged breath. “I’m sorry. That shouldn't have happened. You’re at a critical point in your transition, and that makes your heat difficult to ignore . . . It will likely get worse as it grows.” His jaw clenched. “I should have been more prepared.”
Alex blinked, her mind jumped from one thought to the next.
“Did your aunt tell you what’s happening?”
“What?” She shook her head. “What the hell? Aunt Quinn!” she yelled, jumping off the counter to back away. Pulling her housecoat tighter around her neck, she snapped, “Are you kidding me? You can't do that. And I’m not sending out heat, asshole!”
He held up his palms in surrender. “I said I'm sorry. We don't have time for this. There are people who will hurt you if they know you’re still alive. I need to get you somewhere safe.”
A panic attack pushed at the edge of her temple. Confused and turned on, she needed a goddamn coffee. She refused to give control of the situation to him. “So, you're some kind of dragon thing? And I'm supposed to go away with you?”
Collum sighed and gritted his teeth. “Yes, something like that. Your enemies will make a move soon. As soon as they find out you live, they'll come after you, and me for my part in it. We hoped your element wouldn’t surface.”
“I'm expected to believe everything Aunt Quinn said was real. Just like that?”
“Yep.” He blew more smoke at her mouth, his gaze intense. “Just like that.”
She stumbled back. “Wait, do you know who my father was?”
“I don’t. But now that you’re transitioning, we need to find out before the elders do. They tend to dislike things more powerful than them. And if I’ve guessed right, you kid, are about to be far more powerful.”
He pulled at a stray thread on her housecoat, right above an old coffee stain. “You need to put some clothes on.” Collum reached for her hand. “We have to go now.”
Alex yanked her hand back. She knew if she let him touch her they'd be on the floor. She didn't know if she trusted him, but she'd learned over time to trust herself. Aunt Quinn hadn't told her enough, but it was enough to know she wanted to find out more. Now she had to figure out why her parents were killed. If sex dragon guy could keep her alive long enough to do that, then she'd go with him. She took a steadying breath. She didn’t usually feel small around men, but this giant dwarfed her. Instead of being frightened, she wished he’d lean down and cover her mouth with his. He grinned like he knew what she was thinking, took her hand in his larger one, and
rested his other on her hip. Alex almost purred with the echo of his heat. She reached to touch the smoke pouring out the strands of his hair. Quinn walked in before she had a chance.
“Honey I have . . . oh.”
Alex wished she could sink into the blue wall paper, but he simply raised his head and
took one step back. He gave his head a slight nod. “Quinn, I presume.”
She responded the same. “Dragon King.”
“You have her things ready to go?”
All business, she handed the bag to him. “Everything is here; passport, extra clothing, all
her necessities.”
“Good. We won't have time to stop. I won't make contact again for a few days, but I
assure you I’ll let nothing happen to her. I promised Kaylen, and I never break a vow.”
Alex interrupted them. “Um, hello. I'm right here you know. How about you both talk to me, instead of over me? Besides, I haven't agreed to go anywhere yet.”
Collum stiffened, and glared at her.
She stomped her foot. “I’m not a child. I’ll make my own decisions, thank you very much.”
He snorted and turned back to Quinn. “Say your goodbyes. I'll be in the car.”
He strolled out of the kitchen like it was any other day of the week—not like her life had been ripped to pieces.
Quinn dropped the bags at her feet and rushed toward her. “I told you he was impatient. You really have no choice, my darling. I swear on my life that we’re telling you the truth. This must happen. You’ll be safe—he can control your fire.”
Quinn handed her a yellow tank top and a pair of sweats. “Now put these on. You can't run for freedom in a Hudson's Bay housecoat. It's undignified.”
“But I haven’t said yes yet. It’s—”
“No, Alex, stop.” Quinn hugged her. “I love you with all my heart. But you have no say in this. You must go now.”
Alex held on to her aunt as tight as she could for a final minute, then stepped away. “I love you too, Quinn.”
Five minutes later they walked out to Collum's vehicle. After a final kiss to her aunt, Alex climbed in the vehicle and looked at her would be savior. “Okay, Dragon Boy. Let's go find out who Daddy is.”

Promo + Giveaway: Wolf Hunger by Paige Tyler

Wolf Hunger
SWAT #7
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks | Kobo |Google |IndieBound
She’s all the wolf he’ll ever need

When SWAT Officer Max Lowry meets Lana Mason, he falls fast and hard. He’s positive she’s The One. And Max’s favorite part? Lana’s a wolf shifter too, so they can skip the awkward reveal and head straight to the happily ever after. There’s just one problem: Lana doesn’t know that she’s a werewolf.

To make matters worse, hunters with intent to kill have tracked Lana to Dallas. Max has to figure out how to keep Lana safe, show her who and what she really is—and just how much she means to him.

Excerpt:

“Speaking of award ceremonies,” she said to Max, “I didn’t see you on the stage getting a commendation, so I’m guessing you must be here to support someone who did?”

He nodded. “Yeah. Some of the members of my team got recognized today. How about you? Your boyfriend getting a commendation?”

Max thought he was being pretty damn smooth, but the smile tugging at Lana’s lips told him she saw right through his deception.

“Nope, no boyfriend,” she said. “Actually, it was my dad. Brandy took forever getting dressed. Then we got stuck in traffic. We barely made it here in time to see him get the award. I had to watch from the back of the auditorium.”

That explained why Max hadn’t picked up Lana’s luscious scent earlier. And while he was relieved she didn’t have a boyfriend, it made him wonder which of his fellow cops getting a commendation this afternoon could possibly have a daughter this smokin’ hot.

Max opened his mouth to ask her who her father was when another DPD officer walked by with a plate filled with a collection of various hors d’oeuvres. While Max wasn’t impressed with the selection of food, Lana looked at the appetizers longingly, even though she still had the ones her friend had given her. Maybe she wasn’t big on squash blossoms. He didn’t blame her.

“Would you like me to get you something else to eat?” he asked.

She glanced down at her plate, then shook her head. “Thanks, but unfortunately, the spinach puffs were the only thing remotely edible, which is probably why they’re all gone. I can’t believe they’re trying to pass this stuff off as food.”

He grinned. “I was just thinking the same thing a little while ago. I’m planning to head out as soon as this thing is over so I can get some real food.”

She leaned in close and gave him a conspiratorial wink. “Maybe we can slip out now while no one is looking. I can drop my car keys off with Brandy and we can disappear into the night. I’d just about kill for a slice of pizza.”

Any other time, Max would have been stoked to hear that. In his opinion, there wasn’t anything sexier than a woman who loved pizza. But right then, all he could think about was how his body was reacting to Lana’s nearness. Not only was his pulse racing, but his claws and fangs were dangerously close to coming out. He only hoped his eyes weren’t turning gold.

On the upside, at least he now knew for sure she was a werewolf. He could smell it in her pheromones. That was probably why they hit it off so well. Well, there was another reason, but he wasn’t about to go there—even if a little wolf voice in the back of his head whispered maybe he should.

Lana was telling him about an awesome pizza place that wasn’t too far away, wondering if he’d be interested in checking it out, but instead of answering her, he went in a completely different direction.

“It’s so cool finding another of our kind here,” he said. “I totally didn’t expect it.”

She didn’t seem to mind that he’d changed the subject, but she looked a bit confused. “Another of our kind? Are you a pescatarian, too?”

Max chuckled. That body and those looks combined with a wicked sense of humor? It was like she was made for him. A werewolf who didn’t eat meat? Now, that was epically funny.

Unless it was true, in which case it was a little strange.

Before he could say anything, Lana leaned over to look at something behind him, her lips curving into a smile. Max turned to see who she was looking at and was a little surprised to find Deputy Chief Hal Mason. The deputy chief was in charge of the police department’s specialized Tactical Division, which included the mounted police, canine unit, helicopter support, EOD, and SWAT. As a high-ranking officer in the department, Mason had to attend every award ceremony, but this time he’d been recognized for his commitment to developing his entire division, especially SWAT.

“Hey, Dad.” Lana stepped around Max to give Mason a hug. “I was looking for you and Mom earlier, but you were deep in conversation with some people and I didn’t want to interrupt.”

Max picked his jaw up from the floor and shoved it back into place. Lana was the deputy chief’s daughter?

Review: Light of the Spirit by Lisa Kessler

Light of the Spirit
Release Date: September 18, 2017
Publisher: Lisa's Lair
ISBN13:  9780997627473
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: Author

The gods never sleep...

As the mortal vessel for the Muse of Comedy, Lia Youlos lights up every room with laughter and smiles. But there are darker forces at work, and they want to snuff out her light forever.

Cooper Hanover is a hardworking paramedic who healed Lia after a fire, but something happened that day, something medical science couldn't explain. And if he doesn't figure out how it works soon, the next healing could kill him.

Lia's smile and sharp wit tempt him to love again, and he's not going to let anyone, not even the gods, take her from him.

The Prophecy - "Every generation the nine daughters of Zeus are reborn, and with their rebirth are also nine Guardians. They will be marked by the gods, and given gifts to protect his treasure. Their abilities will only be unlocked when they find their muse."

Another Muse finds her Guardian in LIGHT OF THE SPIRIT.

I enjoyed getting to know Cooper and Lia. As with all the other couples, they had great chemistry and I enjoyed them by themselves as well which is always a bonus. On top of the romance in LIGHT OF THE SPIRIT, there was quite a bit of things going on outside of the couple that were addressed.

One thing I am not so excited about is the feeling I'm getting from a few secondary characters. I won't go too much into it as LIGHT OF THE SPIRIT isn't their story, but I hope that a certain Muse and this particular order member don't rekindle a romance in the future. I don't think I could forgive him for everything that he was involved in even if it meant her happily ever after.

I can always count on The Muse Chronicles to be a light, easy and quick flowing read. I always enjoy the mystery, the romance and the character development. Clio's book is up next.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Guest Blog: For Whom The Reap Tolls by Jack Wallen

UFI welcomes Author Jack Wallen. Thanks for Joining us!!

Top ten reasons writers write horror

“Hello, my name is Jack and I’m a horror writer.”

“Hi Jack.”

“Never say that on an airplane!”

That’s right, I’ll be here all evening. Tip your wait staff and blah blah blah.

Horror and dark, twisty fiction are my jam. I’ve been a fan since childhood and I do not see that changing before my time of dying. Be it straight up horror, urban fantasy, paranormal romance … I’m there. I write it, I read it, I watch it, I love it.

Unfortunately, the public at large doesn’t always have the same fascination for the genre as do I (and many others). This can lead to those of us who enjoy the genre, to feel as if we’re in need of some 12 step program to help shoo the monkey from our backs.

Or not. Truth be told, that monkey happens to feed our soul a great many metaphorical bananas. But why do we writers opt to take on that back-dwelling primate … especially when there are other, more popular and profitable genres to be had?

I’ll give you ten reasons why.

Ready? OK!

1.     All in the family. Many of us come from broken, dysfunctional families, such that we find it necessary to fly within horror’s orbit. Dealing with such flawed characters is like coming home, only without having to sleep on the couch or deal with creepy uncle Bob.
2.     Catharsis. I’ve been of the opinion that horror is one of the single most cathartic genres on the market. Writing something horrific (or even subtle) allows us to purge those demons that would otherwise take us down. We kill (on paper only, of course) those who would cause us pain in real life. Remember, if you were in my novel, you’d be dead by now.
3.     It’s sexy. Look at Kate Beckensail in Underworld...or Morticia Addams, the Bride of Frankenstein, Pinhead, Julie Walker (Return of the Living Dead 3), Marybeth Hutchinson (from The Faculty) … Buffy and/or Willow (or both). Come on! The list goes on and on. Horror is dead sexy. See what I did there?
4.     No safer fright. Let’s face it, sometimes the daily grind can get really boring. To that end, we might need a bit of a jolt to jump start our lives. That doesn’t mean we should all conjure demons, chase down serial killers, or become vampire slayers (see above). Horror allows us to take on such dangerous under the safety of our covers. Your heart may race, but you know you’re safe (under said covers). Scare those doldrums away with a good fright.
5.     Escape, escape, escape! Let’s face it, the world isn’t such a great place at the moment. When political, social, or personal unrest has you down, why not make the escape into a world that might serve to remind you that life isn’t really that bad. After all, you’re not being flensed by a beast with melting eyes, six hundred sixty-six teeth, and lava-red flesh.
6.     Testing the boundaries. Some of us just like to see how far we can bend and twist sanity and fear. It’s like creating your own world that will not only bow to your will, but serve as a testing ground for the human (or inhuman) condition. As we play God with these characters, we shout to the heavens, “Mu Ha Ha!” All in good fun … right?
7.     Yin with the yang. There are times we just need something to be used for comparison. It’s pretty easy to get wrapped up in a life of utter purity and perfection—until you’ve completely lost sight of the purpose. Writing/reading/watching horror gives us the perfect comparison to help remind us how good and evil fit into the world (and that life is not black and white).
8.     Mirror mirror on the wall. One of the main reasons why I write horror is to hold the mirror up to humanity and say, “Humanity, not only do you need to pluck your brows, you are the monster!” It’s a great way to remind ourselves how imperfect we are (see above).
9.     Your never alone. Many of us who dwell in horror’s shadows have felt alone for a very long time. We were outcasts in high school and never really managed to shed the trenchcoat mafia tag. If there’s one warm and fuzzy that horror offers it’s that fans stick together—like an extended family of freaks that love one another with an unconditional acceptance.
10.  Speaking of fans. One thing I have always found with horror fans is that they are, in most cases, some of the most loyal of any genre. When a horror fan finds a writer they like, they stick with them through thick and thin. Even when you’ve donned skis and a leather jack (to jump a shark or two), they’ll be there with you, along for the bumpy ride.

That monkey is now looking pretty sweet. And these reasons really only scratch the surface of nits on that furry monkey’s back. There’s so much more to love about the horror genre.
