Promo + Giveaway: A Wolf Apart by Maria Vale (@MariaValeAuthor, @SourcebooksCasa)

A Wolf Apart
The Legend of All Wolves #2
Amazon  BN  iBooks  Kobo
When the Great North Pack is on the verge of falling apart, Pack wolf Elijah Sorensson wants to give up on his successful life in the human world to return home. But the Alpha says no--Elijah must continue to play his role to protect the Pack from those who want to destroy it.

Knowing he needs strength by his side, he seeks out human Thea Villalobos, a woman he's admired from the moment he met her. He hopes she can help him break through his human shell before the ailing wolf inside him dies, and before the Pack is betrayed again. But can Thea accept who and what Elijah really is?
Excerpt:

Elijah intentionally lost a challenge that would have brought him back to Homelands. He is battered inside and out and turns to Thea, a woman he doesn’t have any claim on. But she takes him in and cares for his injuries (“a fight” is all he tells her) and when a snowstorm moves in, he stays.  The peace he had hoped for turns to something else.

“‘The great man’”—I try to remember the quotes and strip away the emendations that John made, altering them to our circumstances; “the great wolf” was what he actually said—“‘is the one who in the midst of the crowd’”—John said “of humans”—“‘keeps with perfect sweetness the stillness of the forest.’”
She stares at her book for a moment and then puts her finger on a passage.
“The quote is ‘keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.’ I like yours though.”
“My old English teacher loved Emerson. But I learned it a long time ago. Must have mixed it up.”
Of course, I didn’t. The summer before we were to go Offland, Leonora did her best to make sure that those of us who were leaving understood how to appear human in the world they had re-created in their image.
John tried to do something altogether more subtle and difficult. Whatever disguises we were wearing, he wanted to make sure that we preserved the Homelands within us. He wanted us to make sure that there was a place for the wild inside, even if there wasn’t a place for it anywhere else.
“You liked your English teacher?”
“What? My… Yes. Very much. He was more than an English teacher. He was kind of the…head of our little rural community. We’re very tight-knit, but tempers can run short. He worked hard to keep everyone together.”
...
She dunks the tea bag a few times before fishing it out with a spoon and, wrapping the string around it, squeezes it dry. “Was it worth fighting for?”
“I didn’t win, if that’s what you mean.”
“Not really. A good fight isn’t about the outcome. It’s about knowing that you’ve made things better by trying.”
Then I hear Victor’s voice. “You will win, Alpha,” he says. My one advocate with his sour, judgmental voice and his sour, judgmental face.
“Honestly, I don’t know if it was worth fighting for. I don’t know anything anymore. And no one seems to know who I am.”
When she blows across her tea, she sends the damp-orchid-and-honey scent to my waiting nose.
“Do you? Know who you are?”
“Of course, I do,” I snap, all the Pack’s skepticism and my own self-doubt suddenly brought to a head by this woman who doesn’t know me from Adam. Then I remember what she is. A woman. A human. “I am a partner in one of the most powerful law firms in the country.”
“You’re not just a lawyer, any more than I am just an ECO.”
“So what else would you say you are?”
“All sorts of things. I’m a woman who doesn’t listen to music in the background, because that’s not actually listening. Who is a vegetarian gun owner. Who makes her living helping people but likes to be alone. Whose ancestors were on this landmass when the people who yell at her to ‘go home’ were sleeping with pigs in Europe. Who likes caffeine and Cheetos. Who was in a sorority for four months. Who is the daughter of dead parents and the sister of a dead brother.”
She lifts her tea to her lips.
“What happened to your family?”
“You’re changing the subject. I’m saying that I’ve never met anyone who was just one thing. Who was just ‘a lawyer.’ So, Elijah Sorensson, Esquire, what else are you?”
What else am I? I’m an exile. A disappointment. An Alpha without a Pack. A leader no one wants to follow. A flashy vessel hiding something unspeakably sacred and undeniably fragile. I am a monster: neither one thing nor the other, belonging nowhere.
“Lost,” I say, staring at the fire until my single working eye begins to dry out. “Just. Fucking. Lost.”
My throat feels achy and full, and I turn back to the page, pretending to read, because I feel her ironwood eyes on me, and I know what she sees: an angry, defensive, broken, defeated man in a human’s castoffs and with a wolf-ravaged, bruised-gourd face.
And then I feel something else. I feel Thea’s hand hanging loose between us. She has returned to her book, but the wordless invitation is there. The cabin being what it is, when I let my hand drape to the side of the bed, I’m close enough to touch her.
In the snow-muffled peace of no expectations, I stare sightless at the pages, every nerve focused on the shared heartbeat between our fingers.
When I finally look up from the blurred pages, the mottled fire is reflected in the warmth and welcome of her eyes. I can’t stop myself. I collapse to my knees, my head at her lap, my arm wrapped around her knees, silently asking if this woman who makes a living finding people can find me too.

Review: City of Demons by Debbie Cassidy (@amoscassidy)

City of Demons
Release Date: July 31, 2018
Publisher: Self-Published
ASIN:   B07CYC9YGG
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Reverse Harem
Review Copy Source: Author

If Buffy and Angel could have banged without him going all evil, then we would have had Wilomena Bastion.

Dragons suck, like literally suck the life out of you if you let them. Trick is not to look them directly in the eyes, like ever. So, the day Wila finds herself staring into the most dangerous Draconi’s pretty, emerald peepers, she knows she’s royally fucked.

No one said saving a bunch of kids from being served up as treats to the dragon liege was going to be easy. Options are limited—immediate execution or servitude, and Wila prefers to have her head remain firmly on her shoulders.

Now, the self-professed dark avenger must work to bring down a resistance of demons hell-bent on making life difficult for the dragon liege. And, if that wasn’t bad enough, her new position comes with a partner, the dragon liege’s favoured demon enforcer; a creature of fire, fury and washboard abs who—let’s face it—is just gonna cramp her style.

With the help of a ghostly receptionist, a talking dog and the thing that lives in the basement, Wila will be forced to take on a most dangerous task. It looks like some serious brooding is on the menu, because for the first time in forever, Wila isn’t sure she’s up to the job.

A city filled with monsters needs a woman who can kick ass, and Wilomena Bastion is just the gal for the job.

A kick-ass Urban Fantasy with a slow burn Reverse Harem Romance.

CITY OF DEMONS was a great start to a new series by Debbie Cassidy.

I love a strong, snarky protagonist and Wila fit the bill. There is a lot of mystery surrounding her, but I had no issue with liking her. I enjoyed her job as an investigator and I enjoyed learning about her housemates. I'm very interested to learn more about Wila as she learns more about herself.

When the author says this is slow burn reverse harem romance, she isn't exaggerating. It was so slow it's frustrating. There is a lot of romantic tension all over the place and no action. It might be torture waiting, but I'm hopeful that it will be great when it does. I also hope that there isn't a crap load of men in the harem because there are a lot of possibilities and it might be a bit much if they all end up in her bed.

With the little information we got, I enjoyed the world so far. There seems to be a lot to it with a lot of players involved. It will take a bit to really understand it all, but I look forward to learning more with book two.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Warlock MacGergor #2
Let Sleeping Warlocks Lie...

Iain MacGregor knows how his warlock family feels about outsiders discovering the truth of their powers, its forbidden. That doesn't seem to stop him from having accidental magickal discharges whenever he's around the woman who has captured his attention. Apparently his magick and other "parts" don't seem to care what the rules are, or that the object of his affection just might be his undoing.

Warning: Contains yummy, hot, mischievous MacGregor boys who may or may not be wearing clothing and who are almost certainly up to no good on their quest to find true love.
Excerpt:

Taking a small pocket knife out of her cargo pants, she looked about. A mystic had once told her that if she left pieces of herself around while she lived, it would expand her haunting territory when she died. Jane wasn’t sure she believed in sideshow magic tricks—or the Old Magick as the mystic had spelled it on her sign. She had no idea what had possessed her to talk to the palm reader and ask about ghosts. Still, just in case, she was leaving her stamp all over the woods.

She cut her palm and pressed it to a nearby tree under a branch. Holding the wound to the rough bark stung at first, but then it made her feel better. This forest wouldn’t be a bad eternity.

The sound of running feet erupted behind her and she stiffened. No one ever came out here at night. She’d walked the woods hundreds of times. Her mind instantly went to the creepy girl ghosts chanting by the stream.

“Whoo hoo!”

Jane whipped around, startled as a streak of naked flesh sprinted past her. The Scottish voice was met with loud cheers from those who followed him. “Water’s this way, lads, or my name isn’t Raibeart MacGregor, King of the Highlands!”

Another naked man dashed through the forest after him. “It smells of freedom.”

Jane stayed hidden in the branches, undetected, with her hand pressed to the bark.

“Aye, freedom from your proper Cait,” Raibeart answered, his voice coming through the dark where he’d disappeared into the trees.

“Murdoch, stop him before he reaches town. Cait will not teleport ya out of jail again,” a third man yelled, not running quite so fast. “Raibeart, ya are goin’ the wrong way!”

“Och, Angus, my Cait canna live without me,” Murdoch, the second streaker, answered. “She’ll always come to my rescue.”

“I said stop him, Murdoch, we’re new to this place.” Angus skidded to a stop and lifted his jaw, as if sensing he was being watched. He looked in her direction and instantly covered his manhood as his eyes caught Jane’s shocked face in the tree limbs. “Oh, lassie.”

“Oh, naked man,” Jane teased before she could stop herself.

“That I am,” Angus answered, “but there is an explanation for it.”

“I don’t think some things need explained,” Jane said.

“Fergus, Angus, Murdoch, turn it around and call a meeting at once,” Raibeart shouted. “Something foul is afoot. Someone stole the water right off our land. The stream is not where I left it.”

“Raibeart stop ranting, ya drunkard, we have company,” Angus ordered. The shadows on his face shifted as he gave a sheepish grin. It was then she saw the similarities to Iain in his features.

“I’m ready, brother. I thought I smelled a bean nighe in the forest,” Raibeart appeared suddenly, almost too suddenly from where his voice had echoed from. His arms were raised as if he was ready to ward of whatever danger he might face. “Where is that devil’s harlot? I’m not scared of death!”

“Cover your bits,” Angus muttered.

Raibeart looked at Angus in confusion, then at Jane. He stood frozen with his arms in the air. He sniffed in her direction. “She smells somewhat like a bean nighe, but she does not look like one. What kind of fight is this? She’s a wee slip of a lassie and far too young.”

Jane tried to subtly sniff her arm. She smelled a little like garden soil.

“Raibeart, some decency,” Angus scolded.

“Why? I’m not ashamed.” Raibeart obeyed despite his words and cupped his hands over his exposed manhood. It became clearer with each passing second that the men had been drinking heavily. To Jane, he said, “Come out of hiding. Ya do no’ look like a bean nighe. What are ya doin’ trespassing in the MacGregor forest in the middle of the night? Are ya a wulver? A shellycoat? I have a nephew who’s a wulver.”

“The MacGregor forest is that way.” Jane stepped away from the tree and pointed toward the direction the men had originally come from. She purposefully kept her eyes averted from their naked bodies. When she looked directly at them, it was only at their faces. “And he’s right. You’re going the wrong way if you want to reach the stream.”

“Where’s that bean nighe?” Though he had streaked past rather quickly, she recognized Murdoch. He stopped, covered himself and eyed her. “Ya don’t look like a bean nighe.”

“I don’t think I am one.” Jane didn’t really stop to consider her strange situation—standing in the woods in the middle of the night, talking to middle-aged naked MacGregors. Even with hands up ready to fight the men looked fairly harmless. Nothing about them set off warning bells.

“How can ya be certain?” Murdoch challenged.

“Pretty sure I’d know if I was a bean nighe. I think my dad might have mentioned it to me at some point growing up if I wasn’t human. Besides—”, she pointed over at Murdoch, “—he said that even though I smell bad, I am too young.”

“Not bad,” Raibeart corrected. “Just like ya have been swinging through the trees.”

“No. I don’t swing through trees,” Jane assured them.

“Don’t suppose you’ve seen an old washerwoman around here, have ya? Scrubbing away at some old clothes?” Raibeart inquired.

How did he know what she’d hallucinated?

“Quiet now. Don’t scare the girl,” Angus scolded.

“Don’t worry,” Raibeart soothed. “The old woman won’t want anything to do with ya. And if ya see her, look away quickly and just leave her be. Nothing but heartache there.”

“It’s just a myth,” Angus insisted, gritting his teeth as he gave Raibeart a look of warning. “He’s an idiot.”

“Nothing wrong with drinking every once and a while and blowing off steam,” Jane answered in mild defense of Raibeart.

“Och, no, lassie, he’s always an idiot,” Murdoch assured her.

Raibeart grinned. “If she’s not a shellycoat, can I keep her?”

“Sorry, I’m not really looking for a serious commitment right now.” Jane gave a small laugh.

“It’s settled. I’m marrying this one.” Raibeart winked at her. “As long as she’s not a wulver. Hairy buggers always clogging up the shower drain—hey, where’s Fergus? We lost Fergus.”

“He’s trying to resurrect his, um, find Elspeth,” Angus said.

“You’re bleeding, Shelly.” Murdoch nodded at her hand.

Jane lifted her hand. Blood had trailed down her fingers from the cut.

“Ya come home with us. My Cait will fix ya up,” Murdoch insisted.

“Oh, no, it’s just a scratch. I’m fine,” Jane tried to step back but her foot hit a rotted limb and she stumbled.

“She makes a salve that will leave nary a scar.” Clearly not taking no for an answer, he gestured his head for her to walk. “Best keep to the front of us being as you’re the only one dressed.”

Guest Blog + Giveaway: Frenchman Street by Suzanne Johnson (@Suzanne_Johnson)

UFI welcomes Author Suzanne Johnson. Thanks for Joining us!!

 Featured Creaturess

Suzanne Johnson

I spent the earlier books in the Sentinels of New Orleans series introducing the major preternatural species—wizards, elves, faeries, vampires, shifters, etc.—so in FRENCHMAN STREET I was able to delve into some other creatures that live in this vast multiverse. Here are a few, and the twists I took on the myths…

DRAGONS

Yes, there be dragons living in the mountains in the northern reaches of the Land of Elfheim. Those who choose to do so are companions (not pets) of the elves, and can communicate mentally with them…when they choose to do so. In this book, we meet two dragons, Melanwahr and Pentewyn. Mel has an unfortunate run-in with some unsuspecting and very freaked-out humans; Pen develops some digestive issues after over-indulging on some lab rats. Apparently, dragon gas is a real thing. A real bad thing. Oh, and dragons can be as small as a bird or as big as a jumbo jet…in a matter of seconds. Strange creatures, dragons. They’re very inquisitive and a bit high-strung. Then again, they have to deal with elves all the time, so who can blame them?

UNICORNS

Unicorns can be found in the Kingdom of Faerie, and they are like big, horned, ill-tempered carrier pigeons. Of course, if I had to deal with faeries all day long, I’d be ill-tempered too. Faeries are, well, crazy. And powerful. It’s a scary combination. Then set them on an ill-tempered beast with a big, sharp horn and add in the fact that faeries can glamour themselves to look like whoever they want and...THAT is how you end up with a faux George Clooney riding a unicorn in a Mardi Gras parade. Just in case you were wondering.

GUARD DOGS
There is a Royal Canine Corps in Elfheim, and they are important to the elves’ security. One might expect a big bruiser like a Rottie or Pitt, but no. The RCC is made up of Welsh Pembroke Corgis. Corgis are usually assigned to guard (or be a “companion” of) one person, and in this book, you’ll meet Gruffydd, aka Gruff, who is given to heroine DJ (a wizard) by her in-name-only bondmate Rand (an elf). Gruff is supposed to be a spy…or maybe he becomes a double agent..or maybe, as a nine-month-old corgi, he’s just an enthusiastic puppy. Only time will tell. Strange creatures, elven corgis. Why Corgis? Well, other than being cool dogs for a royal (ask Queen Elizabeth), it was a natural choice for my elves, who speak a form of Welsh themselves, although they will arrogantly tell you it was their language long before Wales existed. Gruff speaks both Welsh and English, since he was trained, we suspect, to be given to DJ from the time he was a wee pup. Is Gruff good for DJ, or is he bad? Only time will tell.

MERFOLK

We’ve had a major merman character, Rene Delachaise, since book two of the series, but in this book we meet more of Rene’s family…and there are a lot of them. The water species in this series are specialized shifters—born, not made (werewolves and other weres are made). In the case of the Delachaise family, they are of Cajun descent, meaning they started out in France, settled in the Maritime provinces of Canada in the 1600s as Acadians, and then were driven out of Canada in 1713 by the Big Bad Brits. Many ended up in the then-French colony of Louisiana. “Cajun” is a bastardization of “Acadian.” Anyway, the Delachaise family is, ironically, involved in commercial fishing in South Louisiana, so as a shrimp boat captain, Rene is a wealthy business owner in his own right…and he does some lucrative side deals. Merfolk can mainstream with humans, can half-shift into classic mermaid or merman form, or fully shift into some aquatic species. The Delachaise brothers (and sisters and aunts and cousins) turn into either freshwater or saltwater dolphins—whichever is required. Like other shifters, the merfolk tend to all be alphas. They’re adventurous and bold, and don’t hesitate to brawl their way out of any situation. They also don’t like felines—Rene says cats think merfolk are sushi. (And don’t believe the photo; Rene is being played by Kit Harington in the movie, as soon as Kit can get the Cajun accent down.)

So…which featured creature would you most enjoy meeting in a dark alley late at night?

Frenchman Street
Sentinels of New Orleans #6
Amazon
The uneasy truce between the preternatural species of New Orleans has shattered, with wizards and elves, shifters and vampires—not to mention the historical undead—struggling for ultimate control of the city, including the humans who still think they’re atop the food chain.<

They aren’t, however—and the Summer Prince of Faerie wants them to know it.

Stuck in the middle? One unemployed wizard sentinel. For DJ Jaco, war makes for strange bedfellows as she finally embraces her wizard-elven heritage and strikes a deal with the devil so she and her ragtag band of allies can return to defend her hometown. After all, when the undead French pirate Jean Lafitte has been hired by the mayor as a consultant, things could go horribly wrong.

War is coming to New Orleans just in time for Mardi Gras, with the elves and wizards lined up on opposite sides, the shifters without a leader, the vampires promising loyalty to the highest bidder, and the soul of the Crescent City resting on the outcome of the civil war going on in Faerie between the rival princes of summer and winter.

Mardi Gras Day is approaching fast, the much-anticipated new Krewe of Enyo is not what it seems, and the line between friends and enemies grows thin as DJ tries to stave off open warfare between faeries on the St. Charles Avenue parade route.

Laissez les bons temps rouler…but be careful, or the good times might roll too close for comfort.
 Excerpt:

I turned to glare at the unicorn. It was hanging around for some reason.
“Can you talk? If not, what are you waiting for?” I made a shooing motion. “Go home to your whack-job master.”
Because we needed to find out how it got to our remote beach in the Beyond.
“I’ll find a rope—maybe we can make a halter,” Rene said, walking toward the house.
Jean also seemed to have had his fill of unicorn wrangling. “Bah. I shall depart for Old Orleans, Drusilla. There are people with whom I must discuss matters of import, and perhaps I might discover the truth about Christof.”
Fine. Leave me with the merman and the unicorn.
He turned and walked into the transport, disappearing in seconds. He hadn’t removed his boots, but he had held his pistol out of the water. The pirate had his priorities straight.
    “Here is my message.”
I whirled to look at the unicorn, who was now doing his best Mr. Ed impression.
“I knew it.” That freaking unicorn could talk; he’d been waiting to get me alone.
I held up the elven staff, and the unicorn had the good sense to back up a couple of steps. I slipped my left hand into my jeans pocket, fingering a couple of potions I’d cooked up in this rustic paradise using a generator-powered hot plate and my own blood. My physical magic wouldn’t work outside the human world, but my potions and charms were fine. The staff worked everywhere.
“Okay, start talking, horse.”
The unicorn managed to look offended. “Here is my message,” he repeated. “His Royal Majesty Florian will be crowned King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond in two weeks. You are—”
“Wait.” I shook the staff at him, and sparks flew out its tip. “What do you mean, ‘King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond’?”
What in the name of Merlin was that madman up to?
The unicorn tossed his head and looked even grumpier. “Here is my message,” he repeated for the third time. “His Royal Majesty Florian will be crowned King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond in two weeks. You are invited to attend and pledge fealty at his coronation in New Orleans at the apex of the celebration the humans call Mardi Gras. Should you die before the appointed time, this invitation may be considered null and void.”
And with that, the unicorn turned, took a big, steaming dump on the sand near my feet, and made to trot back down the beach from whence he came. I flipped the lid off one of the charms in my pocket, chased him down the beach, and tossed it on him. I only hit his tail, which, considering it was a freezing charm, only made said tail freeze at a ninety-degree angle.
“Stop, unicorn, or I’ll toast your rump like a potroast!” I yelled, aiming the staff. I sent a warning zap of fire onto his rump. My aim had improved a lot in months since I’d blown up my own SUV and burned down half of Six Flags New Orleans. I’d had lots of time to practice.
Unfortunately, the shot only made the unicorn fly into a gallop. I had no choice but to run after him and hope I could keep him in sight by moonlight.
