Interview: Blood Lust by L.M. Mountford (@RealDarkinferno, @RoxanneRhoads )

UFI welcomes Author L.M. Mountford. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I’m afraid my Bio will tell most readers everything they want to know, but I can disclose that I am something of a protégé in the kitchen.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Well I do enjoy a bit of reading but in my down time I love to game on the Xbox. Unfortunately, I don’t get much downtime.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Coming up with the ideas. I love weaving stories out of air.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Nope, I just sit down and try to punch out a few words.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Afraid I don’t read much in the paranormal genre, I’m more the action/historical fiction type. Though I am a lover of Fantasy and particularly George RR Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire Series (The inspiration for Game of Thrones, my favorite show of all time!)

How would you pitch Blood Lust to someone who has not heard of it before?

It’s Vampires, Sex and Violence, what more do you need 😉

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Blood Lust is set in?

It’s an Paranormal Reality running Parallel to our own where Vampires live in secret.

Do you have a favorite scene in Blood Lust?

Nope, I like it all really. I think it’s a good little introduction to a series, with everything I want out of a book – Sex, Violence and a hint of Mystery.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

My favorite would be Jake from Broken. The hardest, well that would also be Jake.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Well, I’m afraid most of my projects are now sequels to my currently released stories, the primary being the sequel to my debut, Sweet Temptations. If you haven’t read it, it is available for free - https://claims.prolificworks.com/free/kcCtI

Blood Lust
Thirst #1
Amazon Smashwords iTunes Kobo Nook
The Thirst always wins…

Sooner or later, the thirst always wins…

After a thousand years, Lucian had given up any interest in the world. His only concern that night was finding his next drink, preferably from a flavoursome twenty-something with loose morals and no expectations. Then he saw her…

Kate is just a girl from the country, who came to the city with her brother to find a life away from their parents’ car crash. That is until the police came knocking on her door one morning and ripped her new life apart. Now she has nothing and no one, with only one on her mind. Revenge.

When these worlds collide, and the things that go bump in the night come calling, can these two mend the rifts in each other and give them what they need?
Excerpt:

It was time.
The last light of dusk was slipping into inky black and high overhead, through the canopy of clouds and pollution, the heavens have come alive with all the magnificence of the celestial sphere. Thousands of sights no human eye could ever see.
The hour of the wolf, the time of the vampire, had come. The time to hunt, to feed...
I inhaled the backstreet in a breath and a shiver slithered down my spine at the heavy perfume of things that didn’t bare contemplating. Needless to say, it was rank. Human cities often carried a certain pungency about them, so much waste and body odour, pressed together in such tight quarters, left its mark. They had gotten use to the stink and given enough time, even a vampire could adjust. But that place…
Its particular ripeness was absolutely foul.
I pressed on regardless. Lured by that single overpowering aroma that clung to this place. Beneath the stink of shit. Blood. It lead me like a carrot dangling in front of a donkey, teasing my fangs, my mouth watering.
Sooner or later, the thirst always won.
And I’d left it too long.
The way was dark but up above and all around, the city burned bright. False light. Humanity’s instinctive terror of the dark and all that lurked within, cloaked by darkness, had driven them to harness the power of the sun and turn night into day. Edison’s great folly. The old man had sought to create a warm light for all mankind, warmth and safety for every home. Instead, his invention had made them arrogant. Naive.
Man had grown careless, wrapped in their protective cocoon. So they’d forgotten the perils of the night, the hunters in the shadows and all the things that fed on them when the sun went down.
And had allowed darkness to creep back into their world.
I paused mid-stride. The trail swung off the beaten path and down the mouth of an alley a few meters ahead and i felt the instinctive thrill. I was getting close.
Men. Four of them. All in leather and denim. Huddled so close together that to any passers-by, they looked just like any other a bunch of dudes out smoking, drinking, and whiling away a night on the town. But the smell was on them. Blood and fear. It was old, maybe weeks dry, but they were rank with it. And their eyes were all fixed on the mouth of the alley, waiting.
They’d do. A small smirk tugged irresistibly at the corner of my mouth. It would be so easy.
Though they gave no outward sign of noticing me, their hearts quickened as I walked into the open, the palpitations pulsing through their clothes. Then they all turned and the biggest of the group, a brute of a man with a face like a bulldog and a spider web tattoo etched across his shaved pate, stepped forward. “Hey man!”
Spinning round, I did my best to look surprised as he pushed himself forward and walked towards me. The others fell into step, spreading to his left and right. “H-hi, can I help you?” I said, my voice shaky.
“Yhea,” Spider Web’s stride quickened, moving in for the kill. “Gotta light?” His hand was in his jean’s pocket. No doubt a ploy to make me think he was reaching for his cigarettes. Idiot. He had something there. Its outline was clearly defined against the denim, but it was too long and thin to be anything like a carton of smokes. A flick knife probably. Knife crimes had been on the rise over the last couple of years. Easier to conceal than a firearm, with a considerably lower criminal sentence for carrying one if caught.
They were out of the alley and encircling me, closing in. I pivoted right then left, making a show of trying to watch them all at once, of being afraid to have my back to even one of them. “E-excuse me?”
Just a few steps closer.

Early Review: Off Planet by Aileen Erin (@aileen_erin , @inkythemonster)

Off Planet
Author: Aileen Erin
Release Date: March 19, 2019
Publisher: Ink Monster, LLC
ISBN13: 9781943858729
Genre: Science Fiction
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

In an all-too-plausible future where corporate conglomerates have left the world’s governments in shambles, anyone with means has left the polluted Earth for the promise of a better life on a SpaceTech owned colony among the stars.

Maité Martinez is the daughter of an Earther Latina and a powerful Aunare man, an alien race that SpaceTech sees as a threat to their dominion. When tensions turn violent, Maité finds herself trapped on Earth and forced into hiding.

For over ten years, Maité has stayed hidden, but every minute Maité stays on Earth is one closer to getting caught.

She’s lived on the streets. Gone hungry. And found a way to fight through it all. But one night, while waitressing in a greasy diner, a customer gets handsy with her. She reacts without thinking.

Covered in blood, Maité runs, but it’s not long before SpaceTech finds her…

Arrested and forced into dangerous work detail on a volcano planet, Maité waits for SpaceTech to make their move against the Aunare. She knows that if she can’t somehow find a way to stop them, there will be an interstellar war big enough to end all life in the universe.

There’s only one question: Can Maité prevent the total annihilation of humanity without getting herself killed in the process?

There was not one moment of OFF PLANET that I didn't totally love what I was reading.

This story sucked me in and kept me interested until the very end. Maité is a simple yet complicated heroine. All she wants to do is stay under the radar and live her life, but her life was complicated from the moment she was born and she is now learning just who she is and by the end what's expected of her.

I loved the characters and I loved the world. All the characters brought a little something to the storyline and the world was both intriguing and well developed.

There is a bit of a love triangle happening. I like both of the guys, but think one is defiantly MADE for Maité and the attraction to the other is just there because Maité hasn't yet realized the true extent of the connection to the other as well as she is fighting her destiny.

I can't wait to read more. I wish Aileen had book two up on her Goodreads so I could add it to my wishlist and have a date to look forward too.

I gave it 5/5 stars

Promo + Giveaway: Winter's Web by Jennifer Estep (@Jennifer_Estep)

Winter's Web
Elemental Assassin #17.5
Amazon  BN  Apple  Google  Kobo  Smashwords
An assassin at a renaissance faire. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, if you’re the Spider . . .

I might be Gin Blanco, aka the assassin the Spider, but even I need a break from the bad guys every now and then. So when Owen Grayson, my significant other, suggests a trip to the Winter’s Web Renaissance Faire, it sounds like a perfect distraction from all my problems.

The faire starts off innocently enough, but something seems slightly off about the cheery atmosphere and costumed characters. Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I can’t help but feel like I’m trapped in someone else’s icy web—and that they don’t want me to leave the faire alive . . .

Note: Winter’s Web is a 27,000-word novella that takes place after the events of Venom in the Veins, book 17 in the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. Winter’s Web first appeared in the Seasons of Sorcery anthology in 2018.
Excerpt:

“I look ridiculous.”
I stared at my reflection in the mirror above the long counter that ran along the wall. Even though I had been peering at myself for the better part of a minute, I still couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Normally, my wardrobe could best be described as functional. Black boots, dark jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt, a fleece jacket if the weather was cold. I never invested a lot of time or money in my clothes, since they had an annoying tendency to get ripped, torn, and covered with other people’s blood.
But today I had left functional behind for flamboyant.
A royal-blue silk blouse with ruffles running down the front stretched across my chest. As if the color wasn’t bright and bold enough, the entire garment was also covered with shiny thread, glittering sequins, and tiny feathers, all in black. I looked like I’d killed a couple of crows and was proudly wearing their fluttering feathers as some sort of macabre trophy. Plus, the sequins caught the light with every breath I took, and they winked at me in the mirror like dozens of little evil eyes.
But that was only the beginning of my unfortunate ensemble.
In addition to the dead-bird blouse, I was also wearing a black leather lace-up corset covered with even more black feathers and sequins. The tight corset pushed my breasts up to new and impressive heights, and my sudden abundance of cleavage was on display for all to see, thanks to the blouse’s deep scooped neckline.
The plunging neckline also showed off the silverstone pendant resting in the hollow of my throat—a small circle surrounded by eight thin rays. A spider rune, my rune, and the symbol for patience. A matching ring stamped with my spider rune gleamed on my right index finger, and the same symbol was branded into each of my palms.
Tight black leather pants and knee-high black leather boots, both trimmed with royal-blue thread and even more black sequins and feathers, completed my outrageous outfit.
Normally, royal blue was one of my favorite colors, but this outfit screamed Look at me! in all the wrong ways. The only good thing about the atrocious ensemble was that the abundance of thread, sequins, feathers, and flounces hid the two silverstone knives I had up my sleeves. Another knife was tucked in the small of my back underneath the horrible corset, and two more rested in the sides of my boots.
“Well, I think you look great,” a bright voice chirped, interrupting my dark musings. “Really in the spirit of the season.”
A man stepped up beside me and checked his own reflection in the mirror. His long-sleeved shirt and pants were both made of bright green velvet trimmed with even brighter purple silk stripes, making him look like an oddly flavored candy cane. A matching green-and-purple-striped velvet hat with three long, pointed, floppy ends topped his head, while the toes of his green velvet slippers curled up to form soft purple triangles.
Finnegan Lane, my foster brother, reached up and carefully adjusted one of the shiny silver bells on the end of his hat. All that velvet made his eyes seem greener than usual, although the ridiculous hat hid most of his walnut-brown hair.
“What are you supposed to be again?” I asked.
Finn lifted his chin with pride. “I am a court jester, ready to entertain the masses with my charming wit, amazing skills, and dashing good looks.”
“Really? Because I think all that green velvet makes you look like one of Santa’s elves who couldn’t find his way back to the North Pole.”
Finn glared at me, but the other people in the room snickered at my joke.
“Forget about you.” I held my arms out wide. “I don’t even know what character I’m supposed to be.”
Finn grinned and opened his mouth, but I stabbed my finger at him in warning.
“If you say serving wench, then I am going to make you eat that jester’s hat, velvet, bells, and all,” I growled.
He cleared his throat, changing course. “Well, I was going to say pirate queen, but why don’t we just go with assassin? After all, that is your usual nighttime occupation.”
I made a face, but he was right. During the day, to most normal people, I was Gin Blanco, owner of the Pork Pit barbecue restaurant in downtown Ashland. But at night, to the shady folks on the wrong side of the law, I was the Spider, a deadly assassin and the supposed queen of the city’s underworld.
“Well, pirate queen, assassin, or whatever else you want to call me, I still look ridiculous,” I grumbled. “Fletcher would roll over in his grave if he saw me dressed like this.”
Fletcher Lane had been Finn’s dad and my assassin mentor. And just like me, Fletcher had always been far more comfortable in his old blue work clothes than anything else.
“Nah,” Finn said. “He’d laugh his ass off, then make us pose for pictures.”

Crossroads, noun:

1. A place where two roads cross.
2. A place where bargains can be made.
3. See also “places to avoid.”

Antimony Price has never done well without a support system. As the youngest of her generation, she has always been able to depend on her parents, siblings, and cousins to help her out when she’s in a pinch—until now. After fleeing from the Covenant of St. George, she’s found herself in debt to the crossroads and running for her life. No family. No mice. No way out.

Lucky for her, she’s always been resourceful, and she’s been gathering allies as she travels: Sam, fūri trapeze artist turned boyfriend; Cylia, jink roller derby captain and designated driver; Fern, sylph friend, confidant, and maker of breakfasts; even Mary, ghost babysitter to the Price family. Annie’s actually starting to feel like they might be able to figure things out—which is probably why things start going wrong again.

New Gravesend, Maine is a nice place to raise a family…or make a binding contract with the crossroads. For James Smith, whose best friend disappeared when she tried to do precisely that, it’s also an excellent place to plot revenge. Now the crossroads want him dead and they want Annie to do the dirty deed. She owes them, after all.

And that’s before Leonard Cunningham, aka, “the next leader of the Covenant,” shows up…

It’s going to take everything Annie has and a little bit more to get out of this one. If she succeeds, she gets to go home. If she fails, she becomes one more cautionary tale about the dangers of bargaining with the crossroads.

But no pressure.

I really miss the Aeslin Mice. Can we have them back yet?

One of the things I really enjoy about this series is how well developed the characters are. I feel like I really know them and look forward to seeing them come out ahead of their troubles. We meet a new character in THAT AIN'T WITCHCRAFT that I feel will now be a big part of Annie's life and I look forward to seeing what he will bring to the story in the future.

THAT AIN'T WITCHCRAFT is full of information on the crossroads. If you wanted to know more about it and why it works the way it does, this is the book that you will find the answers to all those burning questions.

The romance in THAT AIN'T WITCHCRAFT didn't do anything for me. I love Sam as a person and character—although he was a bit whiny in this installment if I am being honest—, but I can't say I totally feel the romance between him and Annie.

I wouldn't be totally sad if the next book was about one of the other Price kids. It's not that I don't enjoy Antimony because I do, but I would love to get back to one of the other siblings as we get some information in THAT AIN'T WITCHCRAFT that made me think of them and miss them.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars
