Promo + Giveaway: Wonderland Academy: Year One by Melanie Karsak (@MelanieKarsak, @XpressoTours)

Wonderland Academy: Year One
Wonderland Academy #1
Welcome to Wonderland Academy. Don't lose your head.

Getting into Wonderland Academy is easy, if you meet the admission criteria.

You must be a little mad.
You must follow the white rabbit.
You must find the key to enter Wonderland.

If you can nail all three, you're in. The only exception? Wonderland Academy never accepts students named Alice. By order of the Queen of Hearts, any Alice found sneaking into Wonderland will be behead.

Which begs a question. Why in the hell am I here?

My name may be Alice, but Wonderland Academy is everything my real life isn't. My boyfriend recently died. I just did a stint in a psych ward on suicide watch. And everyone thinks I'm "crazy" because I see people who aren't there. Ridiculous, right? That's why I'm willing to risk my neck to be here as "Lacey" Crane.

But who wouldn't want to learn how to ride a jabberwocky, train with a vorpal sword, cast spells using a teacup, or shapeshift into a fairy? As long as no one figures out my real name, I should be fine.

The only problem? Aiden, the Queen of Hearts son, is quickly becoming my best friend. And then there's Corbin. Despite the fact my heart is still broken, every time I see him something inside me flutters to life. How I'm going to pass my classes, and protect my secret like my life depends on it is beyond me. But I better find a way. Because in Wonderland, no Alice is safe.

* * *

Wonderland Academy re-imagines the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland for a fresh, new adventure. Combining whimsy, magic, and a splash of steampunk, New York Times best-selling author Melanie Karsak invites you into this beautifully re-envisioned fairy tale adventure.
Trigger Warning: This novel also includes references to a school shooting.
 Excerpt:

Setting my bag in a chair by the window, I pulled on my coat. It was pouring. Drops rolled down the windowpane, distorting the view of the sidewalk below. As I pulled my jacket on, however, I noticed someone on the sidewalk below. He was looking up at the window. I couldn’t make him out clearly, but from what I could see, he was wearing some kind of period costume and a top hat. He had long, pale blond hair that almost looked white.
“You all think I’m a lunatic? There’s some guy standing outside in the rain in a Victorian get-up and top hat.”
“What?” Mom asked. “What are you talking about?”
“I don’t know. Just some rando guy standing in the rain,” I said then turned, zipped up my coat, and grabbed the bag.
Nurse Gilman stepped to the window and looked outside. “It’s really coming down,” she said, eyeing the sky. She then strained her neck to the left and right. “Your mystery man must have gone back inside.”
“He was right there,” I said.
A sick feeling rocked my stomach. No, no, no. He was there. Dammit, he really was there. I edged toward the window and looked outside. I was right. The man was standing right there, looking up at the window.
He waved at me.
“Where?” Nurse Gilman asked, looking up and down the sidewalk.
“There,” I said, motioning hesitantly.
“I must have missed him,” Nurse Gilman said with a shrug.
I stared at the man.
He waved again.
Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.
“Yeah,” I said. “Maybe they’re doing a show in the children’s wing or something,” I muttered then turned from the window.
I didn’t want Nurse Gilman to see my face.
Mom, however, caught my eye. Her eyebrows scrunched together as she gave me a hard look.
I dropped her gaze.
I absolutely, positively, did not want to have that conversation on the way home.
“I’m ready,” I told Mom.
“Good. Let’s get you the hell out of here.”
“Be well,” Nurse Gilman said. She motioned to the nurses’ station. The door to the waiting room unlocked with a click. Nurse Gilman motioned to us that we were free to go.
Mom and I headed down the dim hallway of the fifth-floor psych ward. The narrow hall felt like it was a million miles long. It wasn’t until we were safely inside the elevator that I finally exhaled.
“Your phone,” Mom said, handing it to me.
I had a few missing calls, messages from old friends, but there wasn’t anyone I wanted to talk to anyway. I stared at the screensaver, which had a picture of Nicholas and me. The photo had been taken just before homecoming, before everything went to shit. We’d gone for a hike that day. The autumn leaves in the background were bright orange and burnt red. We were both bundled up, our cheeks red, faces pressed together. We’d spent the entire hike planning a future that would never come to pass.
I turned off my phone and stuck it in my pocket.
Mom punched the elevator button for the ground floor.
I kept my eyes on the lights above the door, praying Mom wouldn’t ask anything.
It wasn’t until we’d passed the second floor that Mom whispered, “Lacey, are you seeing—”
“I’m fine. Really. I’m fine.”
She didn’t answer, which told me she knew well-enough I was not fine.
They’d been popping up in my periphery more frequently for the last two weeks. People who were there then not there. Flickers of light. Shadows that whispered. Otherworldy shapes. Their presence wasn’t anything new to me. While I was more prone to see them during times of stress, they’d been there all my life. I knew that if I really looked, I’d see them. It was better to ignore them.
A mermaid had taught me that.
Mom and I headed to the front of the hospital. I couldn’t wait to get away from the terrible hospital smell. A weird mix of the scents of bleach, chrysanthemums, green beans, and Band-Aids perfumed the place. It was enough to make a person gag.
Raining or not, I was relieved when the hospital doors opened. I inhaled the sweet scent of the rain-soaked air. Mom’s rusted-out Mustang sat waiting just outside.
“Okay. Let‘s run for it,” Mom called, and we sprinted to the car.
Holding my plastic bag above my head, I ran, flinging open the door of the vehicle. But just before I climbed inside, I cast a glance down the sidewalk.
The man was still standing there. He pulled something from his pocket and tapped on it. He waved to me, a broad smile on his face.
“Lacey, you’re letting the rain in,” Mom yelled.
I slipped into the car, slamming the door behind me.
Mom revved the engine then drove off, her nineties rock springing to life. I leaned forward and clicked off the music. The last thing I needed was the dulcet tones of Nirvana shouting at me post suicide watch.
Sighing, I leaned back into the seat and closed my eyes.
Why was I seeing them again?
The white-haired man had been pointing at a pocket watch. A pocket watch.
What in the hell did that mean?
I hadn’t meant to kill myself.
Not this time.
It figured. On the morning I’d been discharged from the psych ward, I was beginning to lose my mind.

Interview + Giveaway: The Ghost Seekers by Devon Taylor (@devontwrites, @XpressoTours)

UFI welcomes Author Devon Taylor. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

Hmmm. That’s a good question. I talk about being a dad a lot, and I talk about my love for heavy/fast/loud music a lot, both of which are things that people don’t automatically assume about me. Let’s go with the fact that I’m a budding home cook. Over the past few years I’ve gotten the chance to really teach myself some great techniques in the kitchen, and one of my favorite things to do is to put on some punk rock and make a good meal for my family.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Whatever free time I get is usually spent with my kids or my wife or both. And if I have some time just to myself that doesn’t involve writing or reading books, I try to spend it catching up on TV shows or movies. For instance, I’ve been wanting to watch Supernatural for years now, and I’m still about, uh, fourteen seasons behind, so....

What is your favorite part of writing?

Definitely the escape. Writing, like reading, is one of those things that allows you to escape into your own head for a while. With reading, you’re given a roadmap and some descriptions, and your imagination takes over, filling in the rest. With writing, you’re the one who’s in charge of creating that roadmap, transcribing the story that’s unfolding in your head. And I think the best part is that no one will ever truly understand what that story looks like to you, just like you’ll never truly understand what it looks like to them. Everybody carries around their own version of the same story, including the person who created it.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I’m not really a ritualistic writer. As long as I have my laptop and some coffee, I’m usually good to go.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Anybody who knows me knows that I’m a huge Stephen King fan, which probably sounds like a cliché but it’s one hundred percent true. The Dark Tower series is a pinnacle for both those genres, I think. I’ll also say that one of my absolute favorite books from the last couple years is The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert.

How would you pitch The Soul Keepers/The Ghost Seekers to someone who has not heard of it before?

The elevator pitch for the series that I always gives is kind of like this: A paranormal fantasy about a young man who dies in a tragic car accident and immediately emerges in the afterlife, where he’s led to a massive seafaring vessel called the Harbinger, the crew of which are tasked with gathering the souls of the dead and bringing them back to the ship for protection from soul-eating monsters and, more recently, a demon who’s after something far more powerful than just the souls the crew of the Harbinger are sworn to protect.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Soul Keepers/The Ghost Seekers is set in?

Both books toggle back and forth between our world (the living world) and an alternate plane of existence that is essentially the afterlife. It looks like an endless ocean but it’s referred to as a river. This is where the Harbinger, a massive, city-size ship, sails and where the souls of the dead are brought for protection. At the beginning of the second book, though, (spoilers, if you haven’t read The Soul Keepers yet) the Harbinger has been sunk. So most of The Ghost Seekers takes place in the living world, following what’s left of the stranded crew as they try to get back to the ship and save the souls that are still trapped there.

Do you have a favorite scene in The Soul Keepers/The Ghost Seekers?

I have many favorite scenes, but I think the one that tops the list comes about three quarters of the way through The Ghost Seekers and is basically just one massive spoiler. So I won’t go into too many details, but it’s a really amazing convergence of a lot of the elements in the story and introduces a character who is also one of my favorites of the series.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I don’t know that any of the characters were necessarily difficult to write about. I think one of my favorite characters in the books, though, is the villain, Urcena. She’s evil just for the sake of being evil, and even though she ultimately has a purpose behind her actions, she enjoys doing what she’s doing in a way that makes her delightfully chaotic.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Right now I’m working on a novel that’s a little more grounded in reality but has a lot of urban fantasy elements, along with some elements of sci-fi and horror, and so far I’m totally in love with it. Hopefully you’ll be seeing that sometime soon.

The Ghost Seekers
The Soul Keepers #2
“A fantastic high-stakes adventure on a ghost ship sailing forever into eternity, where every soul is (literally) worth fighting for—what’s not to love?” —Rin Chupeco, author of The Bone Witch and The Girl from the Well, on The Soul Keepers

There are worse things than death.
The Harbinger is lost, sunk to the bottom of an otherworldly sea. Every soul that ever died and was protected within its hold has been lost along with it. But at least that precious cargo is out of reach of the demon Urcena and her army of soul-devouring monsters.
For now.
The soul keepers are broken, scattered, and barely clinging to existence without their ship or any way to collect or protect the souls of the newly dead. If they are to have any hope of stopping Urcena’s horrifying plans to destroy the fragile balance between living and dead, they will first have to survive long enough to locate the ghost of one of their own, who sacrificed himself to save the rest of the crew.
Devon Taylor’s cinematic and pulse-pounding duology comes to a thunderous conclusion in The Ghost Seekers.

Promo + Giveaway: Prison Princess by KC Cross (@JAHuss, @XpressoTours)

Prison Princess
Harem Station #5
THE BOYS OF HAREM STATION ARE KEEPING LOTS OF SECRETS!
Valor joined up with Tray after Beauty’s sacrifice because he knew Luck was destined to be with Princess Nyleena. There was no room in that relationship for a third wheel. But when he teamed up with Tray he had no idea that he’d be the third wheel in that partnership too.
Tray has been keeping ALCOR’s secrets since the day he arrived on Harem Station. Not just one or two… ALL of them. But he’s also been keeping one of his own.
His secret is a girl. Not a Cygnian girl. An Akeelian girl. A beautiful, mysterious, scheming secret girl that Tray has been in love with ever since she first turned up in his Pleasure Prison virtual reality asking him for help.
Except she’s not virtual.
She’s real.
She’s in danger.
And before Valor came along all he wanted to do was break her out of her prison and keep her for himself.
But now… he might have to learn to share.
Prison Princess is an erotic MMF ménage featuring double-endowed alien men, a girl who shouldn’t exist in a virtual Paradise, a love-struck sentient ship, two all-powerful AI’s willing to fight for her, and an entire book about LEARNING TO SHARE *wink-wink*.

Excerpt:

TRAY
I kiss her. Hard. My body blocks her in, pressing her against the wall so there’s no possibility of escape. My knee slips between her legs and then I kick her feet open. My cock grows harder against the soft skin of her inner thigh and I can’t wait to be inside her.
My fingers slip up into her hair and I pull it until she gasps and lets out a small squeak that will surely make me insane if she does it again. “Did you fuck him?” I ask.
“No,” she says softly. “But I wanted to.”
I laugh. And then I kiss her again. “Fuck, I’ve missed you,” I say, thinking about how warm her mouth will be on my cock.
She smiles, still kissing me back. Coy and teasing now, she says, “I really did want to fuck him. But he’s your brother and that’s kind of gross.”
“Not my real brother,” I say, nibbling at her neck. I want to eat her up. “And he might be interested.” I stop nibbling and pull back just a little. “But we can talk about that later. Right now you’re just mine and I’m not willing to share.”
My other hand squeezes her breast and I hold her there. My little captive. My secret prisoner. Staring into her dark eyes as she looks up at me with longing.
No one has ever looked at me this way. Only Brigit.
“I love you,” I say.
“Doesn’t seem like it,” she quips. “You left me for several eternities this time. I’m not happy. You need to make it up to me.”
“Do I?”
She nods, shyly. Trying not to smile.
I twirl her around, push her face up against the hut wall, and bite her shoulder as my cock slips between her legs. “Like this?” I ask, my fingers already playing with her ass.
“Like that,” she whimpers back. “Right now.”
“Better get yourself wet, princess. And you better do it quick. Because I’m not in the mood to wait and I don’t care if it hurts.”

Rise Against

Publisher: Piatkus

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Welcome to the ferocious world of The Foundling, set in a bayou town where men are men - except when they are also dragons, kitties with wings, alligators and . . . well, Miller.
Apocalypse? It must be Tuesday
The four horsewomen of the apocalypse came to Earth - and only two survived. Now it's time for the real battle to begin . . .
Luce has come, literally, through hell, and now she's trying to pick up the pieces. Earth is getting ready for the war to end all wars: it's angels vs demons and Luce is the only one who seems worried about humanity, hapless pawns who are stuck in the middle of the battlefield. Between building an army and running for her life, she's got a lot on her plate - and that's not to mention her beloved Cole.
As angels drop dead and violent forces begin to gather in the city, the final pieces of an ancient war fall into place, and it's time for Luce and her loyal coterie to face an enemy like no other. In order to survive, they'll need to team up with those they've considered enemies, and try to decide who, if anyone, they can trust. And Luce must decide how much she's ready to risk in the name of peace - and whether she'd be prepared to sacrifice her very soul . . .

DEATH KNELL wasn't my favorite installment of The Foundling series so I was a little worried that RISE AGAINST would fall along the same lines. I had nothing to be worried about.

Luce is continuing to learn about herself and her allies. I enjoy each and everyone on her team. I love the slow release of details, but am glad that by the end of RISE AGAINST it seems that Luce is finally in the know about all the things that have been kept from her and some revelations have cleared up some of the lingering questions I have had since book one.

Luce's relationship with Cole is finally strong. They are both on the same page and work really well together. We learned that they had a child (well, Cole and Conquest specifically) in DEATH KNELL and I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. I'm still not totally sure, but by the end of RISE AGAINST, I was more excited about it.

I totally loved the developments having to do with Rixton. I don't want to give anything away, but I was really excited about how that particular portion of the storyline played out in RISE AGAINST.

After I was done reading RISE AGAINST I only wanted to read more.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Review: Rebel by Debbie Cassidy (@amoscassidy)

Rebel
Release Date: Aug 13, 2019
Publisher: Self-Published
Survivor's Heart Book #2,
Planet Athion Book #14
ASIN:  B07SPTGKSQ
Genre: RH Sci Fi
Review Copy Source: Author

When death stalks the night, the only way to survive is to become the hunter...
Things aren’t what they seem with the guys. But when lies threaten to pull us apart, fate decides to test us...
Stranded on a strange planet on unfamiliar terrain, there’s no choice but to work together. No choice but to trust in one another. No choice but to give in to passion!
But we’re not alone, because something lurks in the dark. Something ancient and hungry...
The lights are about to go out...
Don’t make a sound...

A Sci fi adventure with a Why Choose Romance and part of the Planet Athion world.

I enjoyed REBEL a bit more than ROGUE. In Rogue, I felt like I was missing something as I had not read anything in the Planet Athion world and I felt like we could have used more information. REBEL felt like it was part of it's own world.

The characters are all interesting so far. They all have their issues and struggles which make them more likable to me. The harem gets some traction in REBEL. It seems this harem is moving along faster than some of Debbie's other series, so if you like a little bit of a faster burn you are in luck.

The books in the Survivor's Heart series are very short and move at a fast pace. Things happen quickly with not a whole lot of build up or detail. I didn't feel the lack of detail as much in REBEL which was nice, but I still feel like we would benefit from just a little bit more. I'm still enjoying the storyline and I will continue to read this series.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars
