“Tell me a story,” she whispered, staring at the globe like her world rested within.

I took a deep breath and gazed at the sky. “A story? Since when do you like those?”

Her lips lifted in a small smile, and mine mirrored the action to match. I spun a recycled tale from fae lore, replacing our heroine’s name with hers—likely sacrilege, but for her growing smile, I didn’t care. She fought dragons and rode through plains upon her faerie steed, bolstering legend and carving her name into the world itself. As the theatrical rendition slipped to a close, her smile had fallen.

It took all my strength not to touch her then, draw her close, and whisper the truth, about everything. But I couldn’t bear to see hatred blister in her gaze, not tonight. Enough would happen tonight. And I couldn’t forfeit everything now.

She pressed the globe against her chest and stared up at the stars. “Thank you, my faerie,” she murmured, and a tear traced down her cheek.

My breath held.

She pinned me with those blue eyes that were an echo of mine. “I wish you were real.”

“We shall sleep off the drinks and leave in the morning. Mind you, if you try to run, Victor Morgenstern, father of witches, you will not get far. Simply meet us at the door at sunrise.”

“Absolutely, my Sire. Will do, my Sire.” Victor shook his head. “Me, hard bargaining, eh? You two are the toughest bargainers I’ve met in my lifetime!”

“Well,” Father said, twirling the foot of his glass absently. “Speaking of reputations, who exactly do you think you have sitting across you? You’re looking at none else but the infamous Getaway King and his Wretched Rachel. Where can you find comparison? You can’t. There was no smile with that.

I flinched on my plank, as the King gave a sharp snortle and chugged the wine.

But it wasn’t enough. All too soon, my thoughts wound back to the Hollows. I missed Rachel, who had admittedly grown up. I missed Al, who had learned he was still deserving of love, Jenks who had learned to survive without love, and Ivy, who had finally found love. Alas, sometimes the readers can see things more clearly than the writer who brings them her world, and . . . mmmm. You’re right. The story isn’t over yet.

American Demon was hammered into existence using the steel-of-story that had been forged nearly twenty years ago. It began angry and ended worse as my mood at the time wasn’t much better. But if Rachel had taught me anything, it was to believe in the narrow percent, that determination and grit and sacrifice can make the difference between success and not-quite-yet.

And so American Demon itself evolved and the ending shifted. Rachel’s happy ending is still in place even as I strive to bring a new beginning to her story, picking American Demon up right at the end of The Witch With No Name and before the epilogue of the same. I have brought in two new forces to complicate Rachel’s life even as she finds herself holding more sway in Cincinnati than she might want: an angsty, powerful demon named Hodin with a shocking connection to Al who tempts her with the dangers and power of elven magic, and Pike, an even more disturbing living vampire, who is playing a more dangerous game than Ivy ever was.

So yes, American Demon is about Rachel, not entirely the person she wants to be quite yet, still a work in progress. As we all are.

Yet these storms are different—they churn with darkness, and attack with a will that’s desperate and violent.

This feels like more than rage.

It feels like war.

It had been a while since I read book one, ROAR, so it took me a little bit to get back into the story.

What I liked....
- Still love the characters.
- Aurora's real identity comes out into the open.
- Some great action moments.
- Great ending.

What could have been better....
- It was a bit slow at times
- I didn't always love the switch in POV's.
- There wasn't a ton of surprises when it came to the plot. Kinda easy to figure out where things were going.

My likes outweighed my dislikes and RAGE was an enjoyable read. REIGN is on my wishlist.
