Publisher: NAL
The Dragon Diaries Book #1
ISBN:   0451233883
ISBN13: 9780451233882
Genre: Young Adult

Zoë Sorensson is perfectly normal, except she's been told she's destined for great things. Zoë's the one female dragon shapeshifter of her kind. But Zoë is at the bottom of the class when it comes to being Pyr and her powers are AWOL, so she's sent to a Pyr boot camp.

Zoë quickly realizes that she has to master her powers yesterday, because the Pyr are in danger and boot camp is a trap. The Mages want to eliminate all shifters and the Pyr are next in line-unless Zoë and her friends can work together and save their own kind.

Deborah Cooke's YA novel FLYING BLIND follows the children of the characters from her Dragonfire Series with the main voice being Zoe who is the daughter of Erik who is the leader of the Pyr. If you are not familiar with the Dragonfire series don't worry, you will have no issues following along in FLYING BLIND as its a whole new series and you don't need to know any of the events of the Adult series.

Zoe has to deal with being the only female dragon (The Wyvern). Not only is she the Wyvern but her powers aren't coming to her which is causing her to double guess her self and her destiny. There is a tad bit of romance going on. Im particularly interested and looking forward to reading more about Jared. There are a lot of hints about him and Zoe having a future together and that maybe Jared knows a lot about that. He makes several comments about a future that he knows will happen so I'm very intrigued to hear more as more books come out. If you love dragon books you will have NO issues getting into this book. There is action, suspense, lots of drama and plenty of chances to read about the wonderful transformations the dragons go through. WINGING IT comes out in December 2011 and I will be grabbing myself a copy.

Early Review: Hexed by Kevin Hearne

Hexed
Author: Kevin Hearne
Release Date: June 7, 2011
Publisher: Del Rey
Iron Druid Chronicles Book #2
ISBN:  0345522494
ISBN13: 9780345522498
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Publisher for review

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, doesn’t care much for witches. Still, he’s about to make nice with the local coven by signing a mutually beneficial nonaggression treaty—when suddenly the witch population in modern-day Tempe, Arizona, quadruples overnight. And the new girls are not just bad, they’re badasses with a dark history on the German side of World War II.

With a fallen angel feasting on local high school students, a horde of Bacchants blowing in from Vegas with their special brand of deadly decadence, and a dangerously sexy Celtic goddess of fire vying for his attention, Atticus is having trouble scheduling the witch hunt. But aided by his magical sword, his neighbor’s rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and his vampire attorney, Atticus is ready to sweep the town and show the witchy women they picked the wrong Druid to hex.
Oberon seriously makes me bust out laughing at every turn, he is the best dog ever. Atticus is as sexy and kick ass as ever in Kevin Hearne's second addition to the Iron Druid Chronicles. He teams up with the The Sisters of the Three Aurora's to kick the butts of some German witches that come rolling into town with demons.  I really enjoyed getting to know Malina and the local coven better. In book one they were the evil witches but the remaining coven members really stepped up and showed that they can be great allies. All supporting characters really bring that extra something to the story. The Morrigan makes a few appearances again and I just cant tell with her what her next move will be. I love the mix of action, humor and mythology that Kevin continued with in HEXED and cant wait to see what HAMMERED will bring to the table.  Maybe we will get some actual romance between Atticus and Granuaile?? One can hope.

Review: Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris

Dead Reckoning
Author:Charlaine Harris
Release Date: May 3, 2011
Publisher: ACE
Sookie Stackhouse Book #11
ISBN:  0575096527
ISBN13: 9780575096523
Genre: Urban Fantasy

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board . . .
MAN what is with the vampires that date Sookie always having to be a disappointment.  I'm so angry at Eric right now and I really hope he redeems himself in the next book. I swear if Sookie ends back up with Bill though I'm going to have to stop reading the series. Sookie and Eric's relationship were at the forefront for most of the book with other situations taking much minor roles. Although I enjoyed DEAD RECKONING I found it was a bit slower then previous books and nothing really huge happened. Threads were kept loose with all the new information that is thrown in and relationships of all sorts were left in limbo. The book as a whole had a much more serious feel to it. I definitely think book 12 is going to be a doozie.

Review: Tempest Rising by Tracy Deebs

Tempest Rising
Author:Tracy Deebs
Release Date: May 10, 2011
Publisher: Walker Books for Young Readers
ISBN:   0802722318
ISBN13: 9780802722317
Genre: Young Adult
Review Copy Source: Author for review with Blog tour

Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

Its very rare that you come across a mermaid book so when I had a chance to read this wonderful sounding book I jumped right on board. I really enjoyed Tempest's story. Growing up she always knew on her seventeenth birthday she would change into a mermaid and have to choose the life she wanted to live, human or mermaid. All the struggles she went through were gripping and real. She has always said she would never choose to be mermaid that she would choose to be human 100% but she finds out there is so much more involved.  BUT I really enjoyed TEMPEST RISING because the struggle wasn't only choosing between land and sea, she had to choose between so much more. The supporting characters were all interesting and there is an actual villain that kind of reminding me of the little mermaid. There is some great romance involving a fellow sea shifter that from the time Tempest lays eyes on him she cant get him out of her mind. They both feel right together, all of the situations they are in come off genuine and heartfelt.  I really enjoyed TEMPEST RISING it was fun, entertaining, and refreshing. I really want to see this turn into a series if it isn't already planned as one.

Interview: Cyndi Tefft

UFI welcomes Cyndi Tefft Author of Between. Thanks for Joining us!!

I didn’t see a Bio on your blog so what can you tell my readers about yourself?

I live in the Pacific Northwest where the weather is mostly cool and rainy (so I have a great tan, as you can imagine). I am a self-proclaimed Scot freak and in love with all things Scottish: the kilts, the accents, the bagpipes, the caber tossing, the haggis… well, okay not the haggis. One of my prized possessions is a dirk with a glass hilt that I bought at our local Scottish Highland games.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I love playing the ‘what if’ game in my head with the characters, brainstorming about what might happen next and how they’d react. They take on a real life of their own when you’re writing and it’s fun to spend time with them, to get to know their idiosyncrasies.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Classical music is usually playing on the laptop while I’m writing. Brian Crain is my favorite piano player and I’ve listened to his Sienna album approximately 1,723,971 times by now (you know, give or take)!

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Young Adult Genre?

Personally, I’m a little vampired out right now, but two of my favorite YA authors are Stephenie Meyer and Richelle Mead. The Twilight series actually inspired me to try my hand at writing a novel. Stephenie seemed like a normal person when I watched a video of her and I figured if she could do it, maybe I could, too. As for Richelle, her Vampire Academy series is just non-stop action with fantastic characters.

How would you pitch Between to someone who has never heard of it before?

Between is a love story between a girl who dies in a car accident and the 18th century Scottish Highlander who comes to take her to heaven.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Between is set in?

In the realm between heaven and earth, Lindsey and Aiden are able to “cast” their environment: they imagine what they want to see and it appears around them. They can also cast a memory and the scene plays out before them just like it had when they were alive, only they can’t interact with the people. In this way, Aiden is able to take Lindsey on a whirlwind trip through 18th century Europe and she is able to show him her home  in Seattle, 300 years beyond his time. In creating the realm in between, I loved being able to incorporate time travel elements and define a world that is familiar in some ways, but filled with endless opportunities.

Which character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write
about?

Aiden was definitely my favorite character (see the earlier answer about my love of all things Scottish). I think all girls like to fantasize about the perfect guy, so it was fun being able to make him say and do exactly what I wanted! Lindsey was harder to write about, as it took a little while for her character to really solidify in my head. Since it’s written in the first person point of view, it was easy to see others through her eyes, but I had to work at showing how others saw her.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

After the launch of Between, I will jump into finishing the sequel. The first draft is about a third of the way done already, but I haven’t looked at it in a while. I’m excited about spending more time with Aiden and Lindsey, and fleshing out the next chapter for them!

Thanks so much for having me!
