Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker you don’t want to cross—especially if you’re one of the undead…
For a vampire killer like Jane, having Leo Pellisier as a boss took some getting used to. But now, someone is out to take his place as Master Vampire of the city of New Orleans, and is not afraid to go through Jane to do it. After an attack that’s tantamount to a war declaration, Leo knows his rival is both powerful and vicious, but Leo’s not about to run scared. After all, he has Jane. But then, a plague strikes, one that takes down vampires and makes their masters easy prey.

Now, to uncover the identity of the vamp who wants Leo’s territory, and to find the cause of the vamp-plague, Jane will have to go to extremes…and maybe even to war.

Jane is on the road for Leo collecting samples of blood from the many vampires that are plagued with a new disease. The journey isn't without its drama, Jane survives many assassination attempt's and ends up being charged with Murder due to the events in RAVEN CURSED.

What can one say about Jane Yellowrock that hasn't already been said? She is Independent, not afraid to get her hands dirty, fiercely protective, and incredibly loyal. She kicks ass on a regular bases and is always in the thick of the fight. With each book more of Jane's childhood events are revealed and the more we learn about her. Jane does a lot of thinking in book 5, she isnt quite sure she is at where she should be. Beast continues to be a voice of reason and entertainment. She is the perfect compliment to Jane and I could not imagine the story with out her. DEATH'S RIVAL is filled with our favorite characters and even has a new character with a name that you just might recognize if you are familiar with a certain Penguin Publicist. The ending is crazy and I can't imagine how the last development of the book will affect the overall storyline of books to come.

All of the Jane Yellowrock books are filled with action and adventure. Every book gets better and better then the one before. I couldnt imagine starting the series at DEATH'S RIVAL so make sure to pick up book one if your new to Jane and the gang.

I gave it 5/5 stars

Trace of Moonlight Excerpt

Ripples in the darkness.

The pit of my stomach dropped to find myself here again, the waves pinched with a deceptive stillness. A current stirred by my toes, the brush of something large sending chills through my legs. I swallowed hard against a rising panic, and the cotton dryness of my mouth flushed with salt as a whitecap slapped me in the face.

My breathing went shallow, the rise and fall of my chest echoed in the hammering of my heart. Dimly I reached for the training Brystion’s sister, Sonja, had started with me, trying to fi nd the last bit of calm to gather my power around me and consciously control the Dreaming.

Shield . . .

I imagined a white light, fitting it to my skin and pushing out. Something scraped my calf and I bit back a whimper, the hot warmth of my blood spilling into the stinging sea.

Don’t move . . .

Push. Push. Push.

I got a basic handle on it, finally opening my eyes to find myself glowing, the edges of my shield a few inches away from my body. It was enough.

I stifled a scream as the first shark rolled past me, its tail propelling its massive form with a slow ease. No rushing in for the kill yet.

The bells in my hair chimed mockingly. What are you afraid of? You died. What could possibly frighten you here?

Get over yourself.

The thought splashed over me even as anger flooded my limbs. It was right.

Was I simply a hapless dreamer?

“No,” I whispered. “No.” I was a KeyStone. TouchStone  to the King of the Unseelie Court. Daughter of True Thomas. I’d worn the Key to the CrossRoads. I’d made a deal with the devil and come back from the dead.

I was a motherfucking Dreamer.

The power exploded from me in a heated shimmer, white flame pushing away the darkness, the thick sense of nothingness enveloping me against the glare. For a moment I caught the slivered edge of a dorsal fin slicing past me and then it skittered away into the void.

A momentary thrill of victory swelled my chest as I realized I’d actually managed to thrust my nightmares into some far distant corner. Not defeated, of course. I wasn’t sure if the darkness that lingered in my psyche would ever truly be lifted . . . but this was a start.

What had Sonja told me that one time?

You limit yourself to your own sense of physics.

The bells sounded a soft ring of agreement and I scowled at them, the shield settling into a slightly less obnoxious glow.

“Float,” I commanded, watching as it became more of a sphere. I shrugged at myself. Glinda the Good Witch it would have to be. Abruptly, the water around me receded and the bubble propelled itself upward.

My hands stretched out as though to lean against the curved walls, but I hesitated, unsure if it would pop should I touch it.

Which was ridiculous since I was standing on the thing. I let my fingers slide against the surface of the shield, a thrum of power racing up my palms to my elbow.

A tingle pulsed in my chest. Home.

The bubble shifted direction, leaving the cold blackness of the sea behind it. I’d traveled this way
once before, only Brystion had been the one to create and control it. The memory of it clung to me in an unsubtle reminder of what had happened next, the way our lives had entwined and the betrayal afterward.

And still. Where had he gone?

Beneath me, the sea faded away. The sharks did not make another appearance, but I kept a watchful eye anyway. I had my momentum; I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get it again if I let my defenses drop.

Where was the Heart of my Dreaming? I peered into the darkness, straining to see the shadow of the old Victorian, the iron gate around it, but in the end there was nothing but fog. I hesitated, not wanting to press my luck too far. Sonja had told me I had the power to be a DreamWalker during our training, and Ion had actually shown me the Dreaming Hearts of others, but the last thing I wanted was to stumble into someone else’s dreams.

Not like this.

On the other hand, I didn’t want to wander around in this void for too much longer. And if I stumbled across the CrossRoads? An uncomfortable twist roiled in my gut. Would the Queen’s geas apply even here? This was not the time to find out. Besides, even if I could make it to the CrossRoads from here, my body would still be in Faerie. Without Ion or Sonja to help me back to the Dreaming, my physical body would die.

I didn’t want to do that again either.

“A few more minutes and I’ll try to wake up,” I told myself. Worry niggled at me. Where the hell was my Heart? I’d always been able to find it before.

The mist began to dissipate as my brow furrowed and I realized I was standing in the burned-out remains of a forest. Charred and blackened bark peeled away from a crumpled willow tree, its leaves nothing more than tattered bits.

I stared at it. I knew this tree. This was my tree. From my garden behind my . . . house. I stood up with a jerk, pacing away from the fallen giant. My foot scraped against concrete. I knelt and the shield faded, taking away most of the light. I’d have been more concerned about that, but my attention was on the bricks I’d stumbled upon. The foundation.

My fingers traced a circle in the soot. The house at the center of my Dreaming Heart had burned too.

What the hell had happened?

Abby Sinclair #3

Drinking from the waters of lethe and offering herself up as Faerie’s sacrificial Tithe . . . these just might be the least of Abby Sinclair’s problems. Abby’s pact with a daemon—whether or not she remembers making it—is binding, so she’d better count herself lucky that (in the words of a daemon who knows better) there’s nearly always a loophole. But her friends’ reckless attempts to free her, well intentioned though they may be, set off a disastrous chain of events. In no time at all, Abby turns her incubus lover mortal, then gets herself killed, cursed, and married to an elven prince whose mother wants her dead. On top of everything else, she’s lost the Key to the CrossRoads to her mortal enemy, who promptly uses his restored power to wreak havoc on the OtherWorld and put its very existence in jeopardy. Only one person can make things right again, but to find her, Abby must place her trust in allies of mixed loyalties, and conquer her nightmares once and for all.

Giveaway: This Case is Gonna Kill Me by Phillipa Bornikova

This Case is Gonna Kill Me
Linnet Ellery #1

What happens when The Firm meets Anita Blake? You get the Halls of Power—our modern world, but twisted. Law, finance, the military, and politics are under the sway of long-lived vampires, werewolves, and the elven Alfar. Humans make the best of rule by “the Spooks,” and contend among themselves to affiliate with the powers-that-be, in order to avoid becoming their prey. Very loyal humans are rewarded with power over other women and men. Very lucky humans are selected to join the vampires, werewolves, and elves—or, on occasion, to live at the Seelie Court.

Linnet Ellery is the offspring of an affluent Connecticut family dating back to Colonial times. Fresh out of law school, she’s beginning her career in a powerful New York “white fang” law firm. She has high hopes of eventually making partner.

But strange things keep happening to her. In a workplace where some humans will eventually achieve immense power and centuries of extra lifespan, office politics can be vicious beyond belief. After some initial missteps, she finds herself sidelined and assigned to unpromising cases. Then, for no reason she can see, she becomes the target of repeated, apparently random violent attacks, escaping injury each time through increasingly improbable circumstances. However, there’s apparently more to Linnet Ellery than a little old-money human privilege. More than even she knows. And as she comes to understand this, she’s going to shake up the system like you wouldn’t believe….

THIS CASE IS GONNA KILL ME was a book full of Vampires, Lawyers, and a sexy PI. When Linnet Ellery joins the white fang law group of a "family" friend she is treated like crap. The others think she got the job only because of her connection and because of that she is flung to the lower rung of cases. Her boring life takes a turn when a werewolf shows up late at night and kills her coworker right in front of her leaving her to solve not only his murder but the cases that may have lead to that murder.

The vampires are at the top of everything in Phillipa Bornikova's world. Children of powerful humans are fostered out to vampires and brought up as power players under their watch. I didn't really find Linnet Anita Blake like. She started off a bit boring but once she got rolling on her cases she became daring and a bit more fun to follow. Anita is more gun blazing take no prisoners where Linnet played a lot of things safe but was smart with her choices as well. The sexy PI John O’Shea joins Linnet in her search for justice and answers and they connect pretty quickly. The plot moved at a nice pace with plenty of danger and action. I enjoyed the alternate world that was thrown in on top of the fantastic world that was created. The ending leaves most of the storyline solved but Linnet in a position for another crazy rescue mission.

The world is what definitely took the cake for me in the first book for the Linnet Ellery series. I found myself more connected to that than anything else that was thrown in. I do want to get to know Linnet a little better and I also want to see her up against the Alfar queen. It should definitely make for some interesting situations.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Beyond the Cell by Sara Tribble

UFI welcomes Sara Tribble Author of Beyond the Cell. Thanks for Joining us!!

The Banshee and its Song

My first YA novel, Beyond the Cell, has a banshee as a main character. Weird? Maybe a little, but not so much anymore since vamps and werewolves are running wild in literary. I thought it’d be fun to explore the idea that helped me shape my young banshee, Sonata Wilde, in today’s world.

When I was a kid, I lived in the country. Our old farmhouse was surrounded by corn fields and woods. I loved it. One summer night, I kept my window open, which was unusual because I was always a little scared to do this since there would be bats, June bugs, etc. hitting my window screen, but eventually I fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and it took me forever to get comfortable, but when I did, something unusual hit my ears.

It sounded like a woman, really far away, singing. It scared the hell out of me. I didn’t want to know what it was, but the curiosity was killing me and I wanted to hear it better. I managed enough courage to climb out of my bed and go toward my window, listening intently. The singing continued, but it was so far away, I couldn’t hear the words only someone holding notes. I knew two things for certain: it was a woman and it sounded like it was coming from inside the woods.

I never actually considered it to a banshee, but stumbling across these characters in movies and other books really opened my eyes and I knew if I ever created a banshee, her singing would he hauntingly eerie and it would pull you in, regardless of your fear. My character actually expresses a memory in the book where she lures in humans and that is loosely based on my own experience and what could have been.

But if you want to hear it, you just might have to read the book.
