Interview: Trinity: The Koldun Code by Sophie Masson

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview? 

When I worked as a journalist on a local paper, many years ago, I had to write a puff-piece article about a plastering business. Now I hate boring readers, and plaster just has to be the most boring thing to write about, ever, but the guy who owned the business had paid for a big ad and so yours truly had been instructed by the editor to write an ‘advertorial’ as they were called. If I didn’t do it, I’d risk the sack or at the very least a not-so-gentle reprimand from the editor. So I went to see the guy in his plastering shop, and after asking one very uninspired question about plaster—which he seemed to find as boring as I did!—we got talking  and he told me this amazing story of how as a child he’d escaped with his parents to the West after the Soviets invaded Latvia. It was an amazing tale of real-life adventure—and that’s what I wrote about in the piece! He loved it (even had it framed and hung up in his shop!), my editor was bemused but happy, and readers wrote in to say they’d enjoyed the piece. It was a great lesson in how you can discover a good story even in the dullest of situations!

What do you enjoy doing on your down time? 

Travelling, reading, cooking, listening to music and watching crime and urban fantasy TV series!

What is your Favorite part of writing? 

Having amazing adventures in my head—that other people can go on later too!

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write? 

Not really—I’m a write-anywhere-even-underwater kind of gal!

Sergei Lukyanenko’s Night Watch series; Laurell K.Hamilton’s Anita Blake series; Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files Series; Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Neverwhere; Peter Higgins’ amazing new Wolfhound Century series. Among many others!

How would you pitch Trinity: The Koldun Code to someone who has not heard of it before?

It’s an enthralling and surprising mix of urban fantasy, romance and conspiracy thriller, set in modern Russia, where nothing can be taken for granted—and anything can happen!

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Trinity: The Koldun Code is set in? 

It’s a world of colour and magic, boldness and suspicion, passion and fear, danger and darkness, beauty and terror, joy and sorrow where the past casts a very long shadow, a world that can be threatening but is never boring. It’s based very closely on modern Russia and its extraordinary mix of old and new, including a strong belief in magic that has never gone away. Hard-headed businessmen employ psychics and wizards; the Parliament votes to regulate witchcraft; ‘energy vampires’ are said to stalk the streets: Russia is truly THE uber-setting for urban fantasy, in my opinion! And so for my heroine Helen Clement, the contrast between the ‘grey world’ she inhabited and this startling new one she finds herself could not be bigger!

Do you have a favorite scene in Trinity: The Koldun Code? 

When Helen first meets Alexey, in the woods—that scene gave me goosebumps to write.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about? 

Out of all my books—that’s a hard question! If I can answer just for this book—my favorite, apart from Helen and Alexey, was Maxim Serebrov, the disillusioned policeman—but ironically he was also one of the hardest, as I had to do a lot of background research to make him come fully alive and as realistic as possible!

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you? 

At the moment, I am working on the sequel to Trinity: The Koldun Code. And enjoying it enormously! Titled Trinity: The False Prince, it will be out next year. I’ve also a YA fantasy coming out next year, called Hunter’s Moon, which is a rather dark re-imagining of the fairy tale of Snow White.

Angels or Demons : Well I like a nice bad guy, who doesn’t? When I was young and gorgeous (I’m still gorgeous but I’m kinda old) I was a backup singer in Honolulu for Don Ho. He made me his mistress. At the time he had twelve. He was bad. Bad! But so yummy, I tell you.

Vampires or Shifters: I have to go with shifters. My tenant, Lio Pakai is a shifter. I never knew we had those in Hawaii and it’s kinda sexy!
 

Up or Down: I like both when I’m having sex. Doesn’t everybody?
Pizza or Pasta: Pizza is easier when you’re eating in bed with a hot guy. Pasta gets a little messy. Don Ho used to love pineapple and onion pizza. And me. And not necessarily in that order…

One hour and five minutes later, we walked out of the house. Marcella kept assuring me I'd done very well as she held my arm. My back, neck, and shoulders ached. I'd had to act out giving birth to a baby-doll while Marcella pretended to be my birthing partner.

I felt sorry for my dad. The way she'd screamed at me gave me every indication that she would be a real Nazi in the delivery room.

I was in total panic. I'd had to pretend to give birth to the fake baby so that I empathized with Marcella's process, but found the experience so traumatic I didn't think I'd ever get over it. I kept trying to imagine her vagina opening to a huge, cavernous space as my father massaged the baby's emerging head with olive oil.

Had he done this for me and Louie? What about Marcella? Wouldn't the pain be horrendous?

"You did great, sweetie," she said. "You're a champion."

"No, I'm not. I'm a wuss. I couldn't handle the belly."

"You were fabulous."

"Who was better, me or Kord?"

"Oh, sweetie. Don't do this to yourself."

"Kord, right?"

She flashed me a guilty look. "Well, he sang show tunes as he delivered." She frowned suddenly. "I should have realized then that he was gay."

As we got to the SUV, she peered inside. "Sweetie, do we have any apples in there?"

No, we didn't, but a quick stop over at Foodland would fix that.

As I let her into the passenger side, I stared across the road at a newish house right on the corner. I had no idea why it held my interest, but I caught a sudden glimpse of ghostly children running across the street to it.

I blinked, and nostalgia filled my soul. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The streets were all gone, and I stared at miles and miles of sugar crops. I was standing on the site of an old plantation.

I saw a flash of a different building right on this corner. It was the kind of old Hawaiian-style building that marked a different era. Painted white and with a red roof, it had a lanai in front. I swear I smelled ice cream and chocolate. I heard laughter.

Across the top I saw in faded lettering the name Goo.

And just like that, the image faded.

When I got into the driver's side, Marcella said, "What are you seeing, sweetie?"

Shaking my head, I threw off the sudden emotion I felt. "I know it sounds weird, but I got a glimpse of what used to be there."

"What did you see?"

I hesitated. "A huge sugar plantation. And right where the house is, I saw a shop. A lot of kids went to it. I think it was a kind of soda fountain."

She reached her hand over to mine. "It was. It was the old Plantation Store, but people called it Charlie Goo's Store after the owner. It closed about twenty years ago."

I nodded. A strange, unsettled feeling came over me.

"You think maybe the spirits are getting you ready for a new case?" she asked.

"I'm thinking, maybe."

We weren't wrong.

Twenty seconds later, something fell on the hood of the car, making us both scream. It wasn't a coconut. It wasn't a bowling bowl. It wasn't a vagina or even an empathy belly. What fell on my hood and scared the heck out of both of us was a woman. At least, I thought she was.

And she'd fallen out of the clear blue sky.

Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she’s not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father’s footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters.

With a great pace, interesting characters, a complicated romance and a fun storyline, DOG WITH A BONE introduced the Black Dog series and made me want to read more.

The book starts in the midst of what you would consider a final exam, and Thierry is the only one in her class to make it through. She is finally a marshal for the conclave and her partner is the sexy Shaw who she's wanted for a while. I found Thierry to be a fun character that is willing to put herself on the line to get the job done.

The relationship between Shaw and Thierry is a bit complicated. He was her teacher so they couldn't really have a relationship. Now they're partners and it's probably not a good idea now either, but they decide to give it a try anyways. Nothing really happens between the two as whenever they are about to go at it they are interrupted. SO annoying. Would have been nice to see more out of those two.

The story was quick and easy to enjoy. There's a lot of action and danger. The world was easy to understand and didn't require a whole lot of explanation. DOG WITH A BONE might be self-published, but it's well written, so if you're an urban fantasy fan give it a try.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Top 10 Spooky Places in Bruges

The charming medieval city of Bruges, Belgium may seem like an unusual setting for an urban fantasy novel.  The city is known for its tranquil canals, historic buildings, and romantic vistas.  But the moment I saw a picture of Bruges, my mind began populating its cobblestone streets with bloodthirsty vampires, flesh eating ghouls, monstrous fae, and wailing ghosts.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that there really was something sinister in the city's bloody history.  My research into Bruges began in earnest, and last year I completed my book research with a trip to Belgium.  The pictures included with this post are from that research trip.  These photos are taken during daylight hours, but I can assure you that the atmosphere becomes decidedly spooky when the sun goes down over West Flanders.  Do ghosts walk the streets of Bruges?  I will let you decide.

The Canals
The canals play an important part in my novel, Hunting in Bruges.  Jenna Lehane, a Hunter with a troubled past, arrives in Bruges to discover that something is killing humans and disposing of their bodies in the canals.  Not only are the canals filling with corpses, but there are supernatural horrors that call the canals their home.  While I was visiting Bruges, the canals were the watery grave for more than one unfortunate creature.  Did these ducks, pigeons, and small mammals die from natural causes, or is there something deadly lurking within these dark waters?

Jerusalem Church (Jeruzalemkerk)
I have to admit that I was completely unprepared for the experience I had within the stone walls of Jerusalem Church.  The macabre altarpiece and tomb were ghoulish, but the truly terrifying part of this church lay in a crawlspace in the vaulted chapel in the back.  A cloth wrapped body is on display, and though I've read that this is a replica of Christ's tomb, there is something chilling about that small chamber.  My travel companion bolted out the door...and I wasn't far behind.  (Note: No pictures came out of the rear tomb.  The photos were completely black.) 

Beguinage (Begijnhof)
Beguines were lay sisters who lived and dressed as nuns, but did not take vows.  The Beguinage continues to be a place of silence within the bustling city--a silence that can seem downright eerie.  During my trip, the courtyard was filled with a field of wilting daffodils.  Beauty with an edge of decay seemed to be the common theme of this place.  One house has been preserved in its original rustic state and visitors can wander the maze of tiny rooms filled with antique furniture and aging lace to see the way in which the Beguines lived.  I swear that someone, or something, was watching me during my entire visit.  With every creak of the old wooden floors, my unease grew and I made a hasty retreat to Minnewater Park.

Basilica of the Holy Blood (Heilig-Bloedbasiliek)
12th century basilica located on Burg square in the heart of Bruges.  The church houses the relic of the Holy Blood.  The Holy Blood is venerated daily, and is paraded through the streets of Bruges during the Procession of the Holy Blood on Ascension Day.

Saint John's Hospital (Sint-Janshospitaal)
This place is not for the faint of heart.  The 11th century hospital is one of the oldest in Europe and contains the often grotesque artwork of Hans Memling, as well as many antique surgical implements.  The artwork and objects of torture are absolutely horrifying and the depictions of nuns in their traditional garb had me jumping at my shadow. 

Another five notable places to add to any ghost tour of Bruges are the Spookhuis, Retsin's Lucifernum, Belfort, Blind Donkey Alley, and a viewing of Heironymous Bosch's haunting triptych The Last Judgement at the Groeningemuseum.

One of the things I hear a lot is that vampire novels are “over”. This is a sentiment I disagree with, obviously, as my books have vampires in them. I personally love me a good vampire book and thought I’d share some of my favorite literary vampires with you.

1.) Dracula – The Night Prince series by Jeaniene Frost.

I actually loved Frost’s version of Dracula the first time I met him in her Night Huntress series. To say I was giddy when I found out he’d be getting his own books is an understatement. He’s funny and sexy and you should definitely check him out if you haven’t already.

2.) Mircea Basarab – The Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance

Mircea is just one of many sexy vampires in this series but he’s by far my favorite. He’s dark, bossy, and knows exactly what he wants.

3.)  Bones – The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost

Tough, no-nonsense and completely smitten with the woman in his life. What could be sexier?

4.)  The vampires in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews

The vampires in this world are completely different from any others I’d read about. And 
they definitely aren’t sexy. They’re worth checking out.

5.) Kit Marlowe – The Vampire series by Rosemary Laurey

What can I say? A vampire with a literary history is bound to be intriguing to an English
Lit major like myself. These books stayed with me for a long time after I read them.
