Guest Blog + Giveaway: Alpha Unleashed by Aileen Erin

UFI welcomes Author Aileen Erin. Thanks for Joining us!!

Top Ten Books as a Teen

This one is hard. It feels like ages ago, but at the same time, not that long ago… But I did my best to clear out the cobwebs.

1. My favorite book in high school was actually a fantasy trilogy by Anne Bishop. The Black Jewels Trilogy to be specific. ;)

The world building… OMG! And it’s a matriarchal society, which I totally dug. It’s a little racy at times, but I devoured these books over and over.

2. Winter of Fire by Sherryl Jodan.

I totally wore out the spine on this book! Read it over and over.

3. The Fionavar Tapestry Trilogy by Guy Gavriel Kay.

So good! It’s a portal quest fantasy—meaning people from our world travel to another (fantasy-based) word and go on a quest. Really fun read!

4. The Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind. It’s thirteen books long, so I won’t show all the covers, but it’s amazing.

I’ve reread this series a few times through. It’s amazing tale of love, fantasy, and adventure. LOVE IT!

5. Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

This is another series that has a billion books, and I have to admit…I quit reading after book eleven. I think life as a teen just cut into my reading time, and I never picked it back up. But I remember really loving it. The covers of my versions are more like the one third cover here! Way rad.
(BTW: Are you sensing a theme, yet? I was totally a fantasy addict in my teen years!)

6. The Crown of Stars series by Kate Elliott.

I was totally obsessed with the romantic hero in this one. Totally swoon worthy. #dreamy

7. Marion Zimmer Bradley is probably most famous for her fantasy novel Mists of Avalon. But I actually read her urban fantasy stuff. She was my intro to the world of contemporary witchcraft.

From then on, I was hooked. I started reading more and more urban fantasy, and less epic fantasy.

8. Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause was my intro into the world of werewolves.

This book is fantastic. I read it so many times! But it always pained me that she only wrote the one book in this world. I wish she had written more…

9. From there I went into the world of paranormal romance. There wasn’t a ton of urban fantasy at the time. And not a lot to do with werewolves or vampires. But I found Christine Feehan’s Dark Prince (the first of now 28 novels in her Dark series) in my senior year of high school, and loved it!

It’s an interesting take on vampires, but no matter how much I liked the series, werewolves were still my first love. ;)

10. From there, I started on contemporary romance. I started reading everything by Nora Roberts I could get my hands on! It all started with the Donovan Legacy series—which is contemporary romance with a good dose of witchcraft.

Totally romantic (because it’s a romance…), which I loved, plus it’s got the urban fantasy edge, which I super loved. Two thumbs up!

Alpha Unleashed
Alpha Girl #5
AmazonGoodreadsNookiBooks  /  Kobo Books

Tessa McCaide has had it up to here with supernaturals. Luciana may have failed to steal Tessa’s magic, but she’s just getting started on her crusade for magical domination. If her demonic summoning isn’t stopped, it could mean the end of everything.

Tessa’s allies, including her mate Dastien, are ready to fight, but they’re no match for Luciana’s power. A little help (and ancient Inca mojo) from Tessa’s cousin, Claudia, may give the side of good a chance if she can make it home in time, but stopping the war is no longer an option.

When witches and wolves fight, no one wins. Only time will tell who will still be standing after the last spell is cast.

Excerpt:
I trailed off when I noticed Meredith staring hard at something behind me. I quickly glanced over my shoulder. “What?”
“What’s Shannon doing with that group?” Her lips pressed into a tight, thin line. “And is that Imogene?” Meredith and I might be split on how we felt about Shannon, but we totally agreed on Imogene.
I turned back to my now-cold omelet and took a bite. “I know,” I said after a second. “Looks like they’re BFFs now.”
She scrunched up her nose as she thought. “Why is she with those guys? Shannon has nothing in common with them. She’s from the Irish pack. And Imogene? Really?” Meredith stared at them like she could glean answers off them. “Maybe if we all try reaching out to her, she’ll sit with us again.”
I’d explained what happened between Shannon and I while Meredith was sick, but she didn’t understand. For better or worse, they’d been friends since forever. Their parents were friends and they’d grown up taking vacations together. Meredith was loyal, almost to a fault, and that meant she refused to give up on Shannon. “We tried that, remember? It didn’t work.”
“I should go over. Try talking to her again.”
I nearly rolled my eyes. Meredith had tried talking to Shannon, and in her defense—Shannon was still nice to her, but it was a losing battle. Shannon would obviously rather be with her new friends than us.
Meredith started to stand up, but I grabbed her hand. “I wouldn’t—”
“I have to try.”
I let her go as I tried to think of a way to say what I needed to say without making it worse. “I don’t know. I still can’t feel anyone at that table through the pack bonds. Including Shannon.”
Meredith crossed her arms as she stared down at me. “Whatever happened between you and her, she wouldn’t do anything to harm the pack. Shannon’s not capable of that.”
I disagreed, but saying so would only hurt Meredith’s feelings. “What if she thought it would help the pack?” And what if they aren’t part of our pack anymore? I thought the words but didn’t say them aloud.
For a second, Meredith’s lower lip trembled, and I thought I’d gotten through to her, but then she shook her head. “No. I don’t believe that. Not at all.”
I kept my mouth firmly shut. If there was one person I didn’t want to piss off, it was Meredith. She’d been my friend—no questions asked—from the beginning. She’d helped me through when all I’d wanted to do was run away from St. Ailbe’s. And when I’d sucked at running and kept falling out of windows, she hadn’t made fun of me. Much. “I just don’t want you to get disappointed.”
“I—” Meredith stopped in the middle of what she was saying, and turned to the door.
It took me a second to figure out what was going on, but then Donovan came into the cafeteria, and started our way. Maybe he’d be able to reach Meredith, because I sure as hell wasn’t getting anywhere.
She laughed at something he must’ve said through their bond. “Donovan is going to keep you company while I talk to Shannon. I’ll be back in a sec.”
There wasn’t any point in trying to stop her.
Donovan took Meredith’s spot at the table. He wore sweat pants and a T-shirt and his black hair was still messy from his run. His clothes gave of the scents of cedar and grass and dirt, and it almost made me jealous.
Maybe a run would clear my mind. Help me figure out a way around these visions.
“She’s checking on Shannon, eh?” Donovan asked, bringing me back to myself.
“Yeah.” I’d already said my piece to his mate. I didn’t need to repeat myself.
He jerked his chin toward the table in question. “There’s still something off about them.”
My fork dropped to the plate with a clatter, and I glared into his glass-blue eyes. “Oh, come on. We’re not doing this.”
Donovan raised his eyebrows. “Not doing what?”
He had to be joking. “I just had this conversation with Meredith. I know how the whole mate thing works. There’s not a chance she didn’t tell you.”
He gave me a wicked grin, and I knew trouble was coming. “Aye. But what you don’t know is that I agree with you.”
“You do?” Mr. Dawson had been all—everything’s fine. Donovan hadn’t said a word. Why now?
“Yes. I do.”
“What do you know?” I leaned toward him, lowering my voice. Pesky Weres and their super-awesome hearing. “Why are their bonds missing? I thought they couldn’t leave the pack without putting in a formal bid to Mr. Dawson.”
“That’s true enough. I don’t know what’s going on, but I think you’re going to find out. If this absence of pack bond is spreading, then we need to find the cause. Just… Don’t say anything to Meredith until we’re positive. All right?”
Whoa. I didn’t keep much—if anything—from Dastien. “Do you think that’s wise?”
“Keeping my opinions from my mate?” One side of his mouth quirked up. “Not usually. But she made her side clear enough with you, and I’d rather not start an argument that won’t get us anywhere.”
Who knew? Even the great Donovan—one of the all-powerful Seven—was afraid of pissing off his mate. The idea was a little preposterous, but then again—I didn’t like upsetting Dastien either. I’d done it. But that didn’t mean I liked it. That left me with one last question. “Why can’t you keep an eye on them? You’re probably way better at this pack bonds stuff than I am.”
He raised an eyebrow. “In case you’ve forgotten, I’m not of this pack. I’m an alpha, and can use that to overpower and override the pack bonds if necessary, but this needs more finesse. An insider’s look.”
“But your mate’s in our pack.” When Dastien bit me, I’d become part of the St. Ailbe’s pack. I figured it would be the same for Donovan and Meredith and their mate bond, even if they hadn’t gone through with their bonding ceremony.
“Doesn’t work that way. I’m already the alpha of another pack.”
“So, what about Meredith? Is she still part of this pack?”
“Until she and Michael decide to let her move to mine. She’ll keep it for as long as she’s here, and I think that’s best.” He leaned forward. “I’ve heard through Michael and Meredith, but I want to know what it is you’re feelin’ from them. I’ve not experienced this before, and that’s sayin’ something to me.” His Irish accent thickened, and I finally knew that someone else was as worried about this as I was.
“I don’t know what to say except that I can’t feel them. It’s like they’re there, but they’re not.” I sighed. “It makes no sense. Which is why Mr. Dawson blew me off when I brought it up. Shouldn’t you be talking to him about this? He’s the alpha.”
“What makes you think I haven’t already?”
The tension on my shoulders relaxed. It seemed like a good sign that two alphas were really talking about the problem. “And?”
“Nothing. If they’ve withdrawn from the pack, he’s not feeling it.” He leaned in closer, speaking so quietly that even I could barely hear. “But last night, he gave that group of boys from the Canada pack a direct command and they disobeyed. I backed the command and forced their obedience, but I shouldn’t have had to. He’s their alpha. It may be that Rupert Hoel’s influence went deeper than those we’ve caught. There’s still a major player out there, and I’ve a fine idea who it might be.”
Holy shit. That was bad news. Only someone more alpha than Mr. Dawson could ignore his commands, and they weren’t more alpha. At all.
“Who?”
“I think you might know. It’s one who got away.”
It hit me then. They’d kicked one of the Seven out of the Council. The one who hated me. Ferdinand. “Do you really think it could be?”
“Aye.”
“But you didn’t say anything when I brought it up before.”
“It took me longer to feel what you were getting at. I like to suss things out before actin’. Get fully aware of the situation. If you feel anything else out of the ordinary, let me know. Just be aware that if that lot wants to leave, that’s fine by me. They’re welcome to go their own way, but they need to make formal bids to Michael and they’ll have to tie to the Seven until they find their new packs. It must be done properly, or they’ll be considered lone wolves. And if they align with Ferdinand… I’d like those youngsters to avoid that if possible.”
My stomach churned, and suddenly I didn’t feel much like finishing my omelet. If the pack was breaking up, then how were we ever going to defeat Luciana? We needed to be united if we wanted to stand the slightest chance of surviving.

Interview + Review: Dance with the Devil by Angela Dennis

UFI welcomes Author Angela Dennis. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

That I’m a total goof-ball. I love to play cards. Prefer bourbon to beer. And can’t live without coffee.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

What down time?  In all seriousness. I love spending time with my family, going to the park with my son, playing games, or just hanging out at home and relaxing. I also love video games. I’m on my second run at Dragon’s Age Inquisition. I use playing as a reward for making my word count for the day. And, of course, I love to read. Anything and everything. My bookshelf runs the gambit from Epic Fantasy to Walt Whitman.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

There are so many thing I love about writing. My favorite part is probably creating new characters. I’ve heard numerous writers talk about the voices in their head. But it really is true. Sometimes a character is so loud in your mind, you have to write their story. For example, there is a secondary character in Dance with the Devil named Quinn. He practically jumps off the page. I had to really dial down his role in Dance because I didn’t want him competing with Jillian and Carrick. That being said, I’m working on Quinn’s book now and have loads of fun with it.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I always make a fresh pot of coffee. I’m convinced coffee is the key to good writing.  I’ve recently started writing outside, which works really well for me since I’m easily distractible. Honestly, I really don’t have a set routine except, well, coffee.  Did I mention coffee?

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Geez. I could fill up pages with this question. I’ll try to distill it down to a few. I probably mentioned it before, but I’m a huge Kim Harrison fan. I haven’t met a book by her that I don’t love. I also love Kelley Armstrong. I’ve been revisiting her books, starting with Bitten. They’re fantastic.

How would you pitch DANCE WITH THE DEVIL to someone who has not heard of it before?

DANCE is a suspenseful and sexy paranormal romance with enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge or your seat. It focuses on Jillian, a half-blood lion shifter, who is forced to accept herself and own her own power in order to save the lives of those she loves. It doesn’t hurt that she has a super sexy lion shifter in her back pocket.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that DANCE WITH THE DEVIL is set in?

DANCE takes place in a world where humans and shifters intermix. The shifters struggle daily to maintain their anonymity.  All of the Prides are governed by a ruling body called the Conclave who assigns Regulators to each territory. Because of the risk of human detection, the Regulators and their handles have absolute power. They serve as judge, jury, and executioner. Most of the Prides live together in seclusion with rogue shifters wandering between the various Prides. The Soul’s Harbor Pride owns a private island off the coast of South Carolina. They have built a commune of sorts, but they still work on the mainland with humans.

Do you have a favorite scene in DANCE WITH THE DEVIL?

I love the ending of DANCE. I won’t say too much because…spoilers. All I’ll say is that Jillian finally comes into her own and it’s a beautiful thing.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

As for favorite, it’s a toss-up between Jillian from DANCE WITH THE DEVIL and Brenna from the SHADOW BORN SERIES, but ultimately I’d have to go with Jillian. She’s such a mix between fearlessness and insecurity. Her struggle to accept herself is heart-wrenching to watch. You can’t help but root for her.  As for as the hardest, in this book that award goes to Lucas. As Carrick’s brother, he had to be both strong yet pliable enough to want what was best both for Carrick and the Prides. Stay tuned because I have Lucas’ story waiting in the wings, and it’s going to very…surprising.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I’m currently working on the second book of the Soul’s Harbor Pride Series, which is Quinn’s story. At this point, I have three more books planned for this series. I’m also hoping to have something new in the Shadow Born world soon.

ISBN:   1619228599

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Born to be enemies. Destined to be lovers.

After killing one of her father’s enforcers, half-blood lion shifter Jillian Winters ran for her life, landing in an upscale bar halfway across the country. Her boss, Carrick—a pure-blood shifter—has no idea his barmaid is a fugitive.

When her father’s recklessness puts the Pride at risk, Jillian must return home and assume his place as Alpha. But not before she indulges in a taste of the attraction that’s been building for years between her and Carrick.

Carrick Granger has had a soft spot for Jillian from the moment she stepped into his bar, soaking wet and afraid of her own shadow. He knows she has secrets. So does he. He’s also the outcast son of an Alpha—and now that his father is dead, he, too, has been summoned home.

Thinking they’ll never see each other again, the simmering heat between them ignites like a match to gunpowder. But then the bullets start flying, forcing them to choose—duty to their Prides, or the one person they can’t live without.
Shifters, a reluctant alpha, mystery, danger and forbidden love all wrapped up in a new series from Angela Dennis.

Jillian left her pack long ago and had no intentions of going back, but when she's called home she finds herself back and in the middle of pack politics. As a half-breed she has always been an outsider and now that she finds herself in the position of needing to take over the Pride she looks at everything with a new sense of purpose. Carrick left his pack to make things easier for his brother who would be the next alpha (and because he has a secret that no one can find out). When he finds himself called back home he would rather do anything but go, but he has no choice and wants to be there for his brother. When he gets there he finds out that the woman he just found to be his mate is expected to marry his brother.

Jillian and Carrick's romance starts off with a bang before either even truly knows who the other is. When Jillian finds out who Carrick truly is she flees and heads home. Carrick had no clue who Jillian was until he goes home and sees her on the neighboring packs land. He wants her and Jillian wants him, but Jillian wants to do what is best for her pack so she is conflicted. Carrick refuses to give up and when they are finally on the same page, things move pretty nicely in the romance department.

I really enjoyed the storyline in DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, but I did have a few minor issues. There are multiple POVs throughout the book and there was a  bit of a flow issue that made it so that I had to re-read a few paragraphs to catch up multiple times to figure out who's head I was in. And finally I was really sad when DANCE WITH THE DEVIL ended, it didn't feel long enough and there are still so many things that need to take place. I will be picking up a copy of book two when it's available.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Guest Blog + Giveaway: Awakened by Sennah Tate

UFI welcomes Author Sennah Tate. Thanks for Joining us!!

As a full-time author, I often get asked “What do you do when you’re not writing?”

While I wish the answer was “Jet-setting around the world, sipping Mai Tais on tropical beaches while exotic hunks tend to my every whim,” the real answer is “being a nerd.”

What do I mean by that? I like video games, cartoons, amusement parks and get WAY too excited about NASA news. Of course I like to read, I love learning and my favorite TV shows are the ones that teach you something.

But once a week, all of that gets pushed to the side as a group of my closest friends and I gather on Skype for a session of Dungeons & Dragons.

Yeah. I’m that kind of nerd.

But I’m not ashamed! Extracurricular activities like D&D have helped my stories in countless ways.
While working on the Soul Shifters, my monsters were less scary and more of a nuisance. I knew I needed to amp up the danger somehow, but all of my attempts fell flat. It wasn’t until a D&D session full of gibbering mouthers that the monstrous ideas started to pour forth. One thought joined with another and I added a little dash of this and that and before I knew it, I had some really nasty creatures on my hands.

I couldn’t have been more thrilled.

Dreaming up sweet and steamy love stories is easy for me; I love happy endings, I love overcoming obstacles and defying the odds. That’s my favorite part of this job. But creating those obstacles is a challenge in its own right. I’m thankful for the friends and hobbies that help me breathe life into my antagonists and make me a better writer as a result. And hey, the next time you’re looking for inspiration, grab some dice and a handful of good friends and you can have the time of your life making stuff up together!

That counts as working, right?

Awakened
Soul Shifters #1
Amazon
Gemma Fellings, a recently canned school teacher, is looking for a fresh start. She’s never allowed herself to have friends, relationships, or even fun. Carson Sanchez has an abundance of friends, but he’s plagued by the skeletons in his closet and no one can help him escape his past.

A chance encounter leaves them both fantasizing, but they never even exchanged names!

When Gemma’s new friend – Carson’s sister – goes missing, the two find themselves thrust together again. It can’t be a coincidence, can it?

The strange happenings in town are much bigger than Gemma or Carson imagined and they’ll need to use their connection to each other to harness new paranormal abilities in order to save the ones they love.
Excerpt #1:
The waste of his time pissed Carson Sanchez off more than anything else. Was it annoying that his name always popped up when there was a burglary near-by? Of course. Did it irritate him that after a decade of maintaining a squeaky-clean record people still thought the worst of him? No doubt. But to drag him half-way across the county when he could have given his alibi over the phone really pissed him off.
When he’d first gotten out of prison, it was a nearly weekly occurrence. Small town cops didn’t have much better to do than harass their resident felons. As time went on, they bothered him less, but every now and then someone in town or someone in law enforcement liked to remind him that his past misdeeds weren’t forgotten and that he would never be truly free. Regardless of whether he served his time or not.
The rain beat down on his cherry red Camaro, but it didn’t bother him – the car needed a good wash anyway. He’d had a hell of a day – the Lake County Sheriffs weren’t exactly known for their hospitality to ex-cons. They had no reason whatsoever to think he was connected to the string of robberies half an hour away. Lack of evidence didn’t stop them from holding him as a ‘person of interest’ for nearly ten hours. His shoulders ached from being tensed for so long and he wanted nothing more than a boiling hot shower and a cold beer before turning in for the night.
Flashing lights up ahead made him tap on the brakes – figures, there were always accidents in this kind of weather. He slowed to a crawl, peering through the thick sheet of rain to analyze the extent of the damage. There was only one car on the side of the road and he soon saw that it wasn’t an accident at all. He could make out movement in the car, but not much else was visible through the weather.
He debated stopping – he should just mind his own business, take his happy ass home and leave the rescuing to someone else. He should. Then he thought of what his best friend would say.
You made a promise to the Universe, remember, Aaron’s voice chimed in his head.
It was hardly fair to hold that over his head; he was sitting in front of the parole board, he would have promised anything to anyone if he thought it would get him out of jail. For years he lived without caring for anyone. Without caring how his actions affected others. He’d hurt so many innocent people and taken so much away that by the time he got out, he was ready to settle the score. He had a lifetime worth of bad karma added up and he couldn’t pass up an opportunity to tip the scale toward the good side.
His stomach grumbled, reminding him that the police hadn’t fed him and the two double cheeseburgers he scarfed down on the interstate were long gone.
He clenched his teeth and cursed silently. He couldn’t just drive past.
Carson parked the Camaro in front of the incapacitated car and turned his flashers on. He steeled himself for the hot shower he was about to get.
“So not what I had in mind,” he grumbled as he opened the door and hurried to the stranger’s window.

“Roadside assistance, are you safe?” A young friendly voice crackled through Gemma’s cell phone.
“Yes, I am. I just have a flat,” she answered, feeling silly for needing help.
“Okay, may I have the name and number found on the front of your membership card?”
Gemma gave the woman the information she requested and waited as deft fingers tapped her details into the computer.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Fellings, it looks like your membership has expired,” the woman sounded genuinely apologetic.
A lump rose in Gemma’s throat as she forced back tears. She saw headlights in her mirror but didn’t think much of it.
“What? That’s not possible. It says right here on my card; it expires May of this year,” she insisted. With a car nearly as old as she was, Roadside Assistance was a necessity; she’d never gone without it.
“Yes, ma’am, and it’s June 6th,” the representative answered politely.
Of course it was. How had that completely slipped her notice? She’d gotten so wrapped up in moving that she didn’t even notice a little thing like her membership expiring.
“Okay, thank you,” she answered, hitting the end button on the call before the other woman could respond. What was she going to do now?
“Think, Gemma, you’re resourceful.” Her phone beeped letting her know the battery was going to die soon, “Of course you’re going to die now.”
There was a car charger somewhere in her vehicle – she remembered seeing it earlier that morning – but the car’s dim overhead light didn’t do much to help her locate it. While the boxes in her back seat were meticulously organized, the stray belongings in the front seat were anything but. The floorboard was covered with trash, receipts, sweaters and various other things that Gemma thought she might need some day while on the road. A charger was definitely among those things, she just had to find it. She crawled over the passenger seat, rooting around in the floorboard for the elusive white cable when a loud knock on her window startled her.

He cursed himself with every hurried step he took through the pelting rain. Droplets hit his exposed skin like stinging nettles and Carson had no sooner gotten out of his car than he wished he could just climb back in. But there was someone in distress and he had an obligation to be the Good Samaritan, no matter how much it sometimes irked him.
He cupped his hands around his face and pressed his nose to the foggy driver side window.
At first he didn’t know what he was seeing, but the primal recesses of his brain pieced it together quickly and he felt his blood suddenly heat. She was bent over the front seat, her ass jutting into the air, tight jeans hugging the ample curve of her hips. The way she wiggled as she searched for whatever it was made his pulse quicken. She had the kind of ass a man could get into a lot of trouble over.
A gust of wind swept down the highway and sent a chill through Carson, reminding him that he was standing like an idiot in the rain, ogling a stranger. He wasn’t fresh out – he shouldn’t be losing all the moisture in his mouth at the sight of a nice body. He took a step back and rapped his knuckles against the window.
She jumped. Her head struck the underside of the glove compartment and Carson winced for her as she rubbed the fresh knot. She crawled back to the window on her hands and knees and Carson couldn’t stop himself from imprinting the image to his memory banks. The window retracted and he got his first good look at her as the wind blew rain into her face.
“Do you need help?”
“I…” she tried to shield herself from the onslaught. Carson side-stepped to block the wind for her. “It’s just a flat, but my jack is rusted,” she answered.
He could tell that she was at her breaking point. Her car was stuffed to the brim – was she running from something… or someone? The thought of someone threatening this women brought out a protective instinct in Carson he’d forgotten he had. The shadows in the car gave her a soft look and the frustration in her eyes made something deep down inside him come to life. He wanted to take her frustration away. Needed to.
“Don’t worry, I have a jack,” he said.
The instant relief that crossed her face made him swell with male pride. The smile that tugged at her lips tugged at his heartstrings in turn. Never before had he felt this instant urge to right every wrong. It had been a long time since he’d been with anyone. Maybe it was just desperation getting the best of him.
Then she batted those long lashes of hers and he knew he was lost.
“That is the best news I’ve heard all day,” she said.
Maybe being the Good Samaritan wasn’t so bad after all.

The man worked quickly in the pouring rain to jack up her car. Gemma stood on the side of the road under her floral umbrella, feeling completely useless.
“You have a spare?” he asked after getting the car jacked.
“A donut. I don’t have much further to go,” she said, opening the trunk.
“Oh, right,” she muttered looking at the boxes that stood between her and the spare tire under her trunk.
“I’ve got it, don’t worry,” he said, nudging her out of the way. His white t-shirt clung wetly to him and did nothing to hide the outlines of strong muscles beneath the translucent fabric. Suddenly her mouth was a desert. She licked her lips absently, trying not to picture taut flesh rippling over his muscles as he flexed and rearranged her belongings. What was wrong with her? She’d never in her life been instantly attracted to someone like this. Maybe it was just the whole ‘damsel in distress’ thing that got her excited.
Her hands flew to cover her cheeks; they were burning hot! He lifted the spare out of the trunk without any of her things getting damaged by the rain.
In the ten or so minutes it took for the man to change her tire, the rain stopped completely and the sun was already out forcing them both to sweat despite their damp clothes.
He dragged the back of his hand across his forehead before dusting his hands off.
“Well, I think that just about does it,” he said. The deep timbre of his voice sent shivers down her spine.
She really needed to get a grip. He was just a stranger doing a nice thing – this wasn’t the opening to some cheesy chick flick or something.
“Thank you so much,” she gushed, almost giving in to the urge to give him a big hug. She eyed his soaked clothes and thought better of it… for so many reasons.
“No problem, by the way I’m–” he was interrupted by her phone ringing.
She made a face at her pocket before yanking the phone out to glare at the caller ID, as if the person on the other end knew what they were doing and they should feel very bad about it.
“My landlord,” she said, “I’m late to move in, he’s probably wondering where I am.”
“Right, well, you’re good to go now,” he said, taking his jack back to his car.
“Thank you again so much. You totally saved my life,” she said again, getting back into the beat-up Escort.
As she answered her phone and pulled away, she missed the look of disappointment on the stranger’s face and it wasn’t until much later that she realized she never even got his name.
