They may not be the perfect match…But they’re having fun.

Going to the chapel, and her sister is going to get married…no matter what.

Josie Cole might be unlucky in love, but she’s a pro at matching other couples. When her sister gets married to the man of her dreams, it’ll be Cole Matchmaking Services one-hundredth match, and secure Josie a television special that would boost business.

Private investigator–and werewolf–Ryder McManus doesn’t believe in marriage. Catching cheating spouses has taught him there is no such thing as happily ever after. But then he never expected to find his fated mate, Josie, at his best friend’s wedding festivities.

When Josie and Ryder are together, the chemistry heats up. While he’s trying to stop the wedding, she’ll do whatever it takes to give the couple a dream day. But the secret he’s trying to expose might just ruin everything…

Kristin Miller is a great storyteller and I have really enjoyed her werewolf books. WHAT A WEREWOLF WANTS is part of her San Francisco Wolf Pack series and I enjoyed getting to know the new couple.

Josie is a very successful matchmaker and her sister marrying her match brings her successful matching spree up to 100. She really wants everything to go smoothly to land a television special, but the grooms best friend is hell bent on throwing a wrench in her plans. To make matters worse, she is extremely attracted to him and can't seem to get him out of her head. Ryder is a werewolf and is a bit broken when it comes to falling in love. The attraction between him and Josie is pretty intense, but he doubts himself and her ability to love him for who he is so he pushes her away a lot and that becomes a bit frustrating after a while. When the truth comes out about him being a werewolf both Josie and Ryder have some things that need to be worked out.

One thing I really wish this series would do is incorporate the characters from the previous books. All the characters are a part of the San Francisco Pack, but we never see them after their book is over. I really love updates and it makes me sad not knowing how they are doing. It just doesn't feel like a pack to me.

WHAT A WEREWOLF WANTS was a cute story and I was able to read it pretty fast. I think there could have been more detail involved in the storyline and the characters.  I am really hoping that Josie's gift comes up in future books and is able to bring the pack together into one book like I have been wanting. This has been a cute series so far and if your looking for something light, it might just be the series for you.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Guest Blog: Hunting for Spring by Katherine McIntyre

UFI welcomes Author Katherine McIntyre. Thanks for Joining us!!

Alternative Clubs in Urban Fantasy
While there are only hints around a club scene in my latest release, Hunting for Spring, I’ve noticed in a lot of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, there tends to be a dark, sexy club scene. Especially in vampire stories—maybe a few too many folks played Vampire the Masquerade in their youths…just me? Maybe just me. However, if you’ve ever attended an alternative night at your local club, a lot of the depictions I’ve seen in urban fantasy tend to be pretty on the mark.
When I was younger I used to go to Nocturne nights at Shampoo in Philadelphia, and the ambiance was like stepping into a vampire’s lair. Dimmed lights, plush velvet everywhere, folks all dressed in black, and dark, pulsing music all set the scene perfectly. And as a teen who devoured anything supernatural and paranormal in book choices, this was the perfect outlet for my imagination. There are plenty of ongoing nights all over too, for those who want to explore a little, or hey, if any paranormal authors are looking for inspiration. Being an observer at these events can be half of the fun with some of the wild costumes people come up with!
Part of what makes cities unique is their night scene, and clubs factor into that largely. Go to any major city and you’ll find a cavalcade of clubs with tons of different music, whether it be electronica, R&B, hip-hop, or industrial/EBM. Hence why, when tackling an urban fantasy, especially a long running series, there tends to be a nightclub scene. In an homage to my many nights at Shampoo during my youth, one of my side characters, Jev, happens to be a clubber. You get details woven in, such as her clothing choice, and in a story with witches, fantastical monsters, and hunters, crazy nightclubs are the least of their worries.

Hunting for Spring
Available at Loose ID
Hunters are a lonely breed, and Conor’s no exception, until the day he meets Brenna. Even though she slinks in unannounced and kills the wight he was hunting down, the girl’s a mystery and he can’t get that blinding smile or those gorgeous curves off his mind. Since they’re both after the same caster who’s unleashing these monsters, he suggests teaming up, and despite her initial reluctance, the hungry way she scans him down promises something powerful.

However, her secrets have repercussions, and faster than Conor can lift his Glock, he’s drawn into the web of kidnappings and Unseelie mischief, all concealing the machinations of a darker foe—one that plans to bring Philly to ruin.
Excerpt:

He took two steps back, quite aware of the presence on the other side of the room. “You know, stealing someone’s kill is bad form,” he complained, cutting through the quiet tension.
“Looked to me like you could use the help.” The female voice came from behind him.
Conor turned around, his hand inching for his Glock.
She sat on the countertop, one leg hanging over the edge. Long strands of dark, messy hair hung past her face, brushing her cheeks as she lifted her chin. The woman had the sort of striking features that made men gape, and Conor fell victim. Her blue eyes intensified with a curious light as she scanned him, and in the shadowy room, her pale skin took on a silver hue. Even though her dark eyebrows knitted together, lending her features a sort of stark fierceness, her pursed mauve lips softened her face.
The girl tugged on the cord of her hoodie, and her eyes narrowed. “What’s a normal kid like you doing hunting a beastie like that?” Her boots hit the ground with a thud, and she brushed her knees off, making the buckles of her cargo pants jangle.
Conor arched his brow, wiping his jacket sleeves on the wall in a sad attempt at getting rid of the wight crud. “Sweetheart, whoever trained you in magic should’ve given you the rundown on everyone you might encounter—including hunters.”
He caught the recognition flashing in her eyes, as well as the careful way she stalked around him like a panther surveying an encroaching predator. “Well, feel free to piss off, then.” Her words were curt but not shocking. Hunters and casters shared a history of bad blood due to the chaos so many irresponsible witches caused. However, one bit of curiosity lingered within him—why had she been tracking the wight? Unless she’d created this monster.
His anger flared at the memory of the wounded dog. At the remains of what used to be a human male lying on the floor, all wreckage from some stupid caster playing around with powers he or she shouldn’t have been.
“Maybe my work’s not done yet.” He leaned against the wall and tugged his hunting knife from his boot. Her entire body tensed in a slight, almost imperceptible way, but the inquisitive look never left her eyes. Without further ado, he began picking under his fingernails with the tip of the knife. “Care to share why you were tracking that wight?”
“Hoping it would lead me to its master.” She shrugged. “You wouldn’t happen to be trailing him too?”
“If finding the source will stop these attacks, I’m joining you.” Conor didn’t leave any room for disagreement in his voice. Casters in a spat could get ugly, and he didn’t want to clean up more of these messes.
“Excuse me?” She placed her hands on her hips, those blue eyes of hers flashing. “From where I stand, you’re not much help.”
Conor tapped the side of his nose. “Unless you happen to have an item of his. You’ll never find a better tracker than a hunter, even with magic.”
A huff slipped from her lips, followed by a frown. “Fine, but the second you try to slip a knife in my back, I’ll torch you faster than those wight remains.”
Conor snorted. “I’m humbled to inspire such faith.” He ran his fingers through his hair and grimaced at the dirt he’d raked through. A rustle came from the door.
She snapped to attention as fast as his hand tightened around the hilt of his knife.
A whine followed by a snuffling sound came from the entryway. Conor squinted as the outside light cast the visitor in shadow.
He relaxed his grip and slid the knife back into his boot.
The small beagle from earlier made its way toward him, limping as it favored its side. Relief flooded through him to see the little guy survived. Even though his father had trained him to shut out emotions since they blinded fast and efficient decision-making, he couldn’t help the occasional indulgence. After all, he didn’t envy his father’s lonely existence. Crouching, he scooped the beagle into his arms, careful not to brush the wounded stump.
“I’m Conor Malone, by the by. If you want my help, we’re going to take a quick side excursion, because this guy needs medical attention and I need to clean up.” The dog whined again when he clutched the shuddering body closer.
She arched an eyebrow. Based on the curl of her lip, she must be more in his father’s camp of anti-emotion. Not like he gave a damn while a dog trembled in his arms. After a minute of stale tension that weighed heavily in the carnage-filled room, she spoke up.
“Fine. We can save your puppy, but if I catch you singing to the woodland critters, I’m out.” At that, she cracked a grin. Not one of those casual tossed-aside ones but a smile that lit her eyes with mischief and illuminated her whole face.
Conor made his way to the door, pausing before he stepped out onto the street. “You never told me your name.”
“And you never asked.” She outpaced him, hopping down the first couple of steps. “You can call me Brenna.”

Review: Gambit by C.L. Denault

Gambit
Author: C.L Denault
Release Date: March 31, 2015
Publisher: REUTS Publications, LLC
ISBN:  1942111231
ISBN13: 9781942111238
Genre: Young Adult Dystopian
Review Copy Source: NetGalley
In Earth’s battle-ridden future, humans have evolved. Those with extraordinary skills rise to power and fame. Those without live in poverty.

Sixteen-year-old Willow Kent believed she was normal. But when a genetically-advanced military officer shows up in her village and questions her identity, long-buried secrets begin to emerge. With remarkable skills and a shocking genetic code the Core and its enemies will do anything to obtain, Willow suddenly finds the freedom she craves slipping through her fingers. Greed, corruption, and genetic tampering threaten every aspect of her existence as she’s thrust, unwilling, into the sophisticated culture of the elite Core city. To ensure peace, she must leave the past behind, marry a man she’s never met, and submit to the authority of a relentless officer with a hidden agenda of his own.

Her life has become a dangerous game. How much will she sacrifice in order to win?

I don't exactly know what I was expecting when I started reading GAMBIT, but it ended up being way more than I thought it would be and I really enjoyed it.

Willow lives what she considers a normal life with her family in a small village until a military officer shows up and questions her identity. She quickly learns that the normal life she has always loved is about to change and she doesn't see it as for the better. Besides the occasional sixteen-year-old tantrum, I found Willow to be a strong character. I enjoyed her way of thinking and I enjoyed watching her grow into herself and her new life.

If I am 100% honest I seriously hated the romantic interest. He was HORRIBLE to Willow in the beginning and it took me a really long time to get over it and look past it. As I got to know him, I ended up liking him a little more, but I'm not sold on him yet. I am interested to see what he does in book two and if it makes me see him in a whole other light.

GAMBIT was full of mystery and intrigue and kept me interested. I loved the world and the whole genetic code causing abilities story line really worked for me. There were quite a few side characters that kept things even more interesting than they already were. I think as the series continues they will continue to intrigue me.  I am really excited to see what happens next for Willow and hope the wait won't be too long until book two.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: Healing Eden by Rhenna Morgan

UFI welcomes Author Rhenna Morgan. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

Oh, wow! Cool question! The first thing that comes to mind is that I was in a rock band in college, and then a country band after graduation. Looking back, the rock band was pretty comical, but the country band did really well. It was a great experience and we actually got to do a few showcases for some Nashville record companies. We never sealed a deal, but I’m good with that. Song writing was lovely, but writing romance is about thirty times better. ☺

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Down time? What is this down time you speak of? ☺ Seriously, between working a full-time day job, writing full time on top of that, and a family with pre-teens, I don’t score much “me” time. But when I do, my first pick is usually reading. After that I’ll try to catch up on all the killer TV shows I hear people talking about, or movie binge with the hubby.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Hands down, I’d say the sharing of a new story. Don’t get me wrong, it’s also terrifying, but the real joy of writing is connecting with a fellow reader on a deep, story level. When someone relates or falls in love with a character you’ve created it’s absolutely magic.
Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Absolutely. Nothing fancy, you understand. More like a runner stretching before they head out for a job. (Okay, maybe it’s more like a very superstitious person going through all their gyrations to avoid backlash from the universe. ☺ )

First, I almost always write in the evening. On weekends, I can write during the day, but it takes a little longer to get in the grove. Second, I have about three or four websites I visit. Then I pull up my writing log (what I use to keep me hitting my word count), take a deep breath, and hit it. I think the websites are my subconscious’ way of getting me to let go of all the to-dos rattling around in my head.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Ugh. Favorites are so hard. I’m a Libra and when it comes to deciding between things I adore, I’m a lost cause. Okay, here are a few:

  • Kristen Ashley – She’s got two KILLER paranormal/fantasy series that I adore. One is The Fantasyland series. Every story is different, but they all have a common thread. My favorite is The Golden Dynasty. The other series which is equally awesome is the The Three Series. Again, they’re all unique alone, but beautiful together.
  • Karen Marie Moning – Okay, I know her Faefever series rocks and Jericho is…well…Jericho, but I still love her Highlanders and the Time Travel element. I read those books for the first time years ago and I still go back every now and then just for a good ahhhhh…
  • JR Ward – My preference is the old-school Black Dagger Brotherhood, but I’m super pumped about the new, second-generation spin off that’s coming. And Rhage is getting a new book soon!!!
  • Darynda Jones – Holy smokes, Batman! Her Charley Davidson series is both a laugh riot and steamy as hell. Reyes Farrow—yummy.
  • Sylvia Day – Her Renegade Angels Series.
  • Kresley Cole – Her Immortals After Dark Series. (Though, between you and me, I think she rocked her new contemporary erotic series last year even better.)
  • Juliette Cross – Her Vessel Trilogy (Who doesn’t like demon hunters?), and her Nightwing Series (Dragons! Hello!!!) Seriously, if you love any of the authors above, you should check out Juliette’s work. Her heroes are scrumptious and her stories are beautifully written.

How would you pitch HEALING EDEN to someone who has not heard of it before?

Healing Eden is all about redemption. About a knight in seriously tarnished armor and a healer who’s willing to fight even her family to save his soul. All of it cast in a contemporary fantasy setting. And yeah, it really is set in Eden. ☺

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Eden Series is set in?

You bet! As I mentioned above, it’s set in the one and only land of creation. Turns out it’s not really gone, just separated from the human realm and populated by the Myren race. They’re basically an upgraded version of us with a whole lot more in the way of powers. Telekinesis and Telepathy are basic powers available to all Myrens once they’re awakened in their late teens or early twenties. They also command the elements of fire, water, earth, air, and storm, and can fly via their gift of telekinesis. The land itself is pretty incredible. Like ours and yet MORE. More color, more variation, and clean. Very clean. As in no electricity. (If you can cast a lightning bolt whenever you want one, who needs external power?)

Do you have a favorite scene in HEALING EDEN ?

Ah, man! That’s like asking which kid you like better. ☺ I guess my favorite is their mating scene when he surprises her with his gift. (Okay, the mating is pretty hot, too.) I was really tickled with the way it came out of nowhere and the exceptional image it built in my head. Personally, I’d love to have a place like where they end up. I’d never leave home!

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

So far my favorite is the hero in the one I’m writing now, Eden’s Deliverance (book four in the series). His name is Ludan Forte and throughout the books he’s been a gruff SOB with pretty much everyone. I’d thought Ramsay, the hero from Book three, Waking Eden, would be my favorite, but Ludan is quite literally stealing my heart. Turns out the tough guy is really a gentle giant. (At least in the hands of his heroine.)

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I just finished the first book in a new contemporary romance that’s super steamy and very edgy. The series is called The Haven Brotherhood and features six men from the wrong side of the tracks who’ve made successful lives for themselves despite the curve balls society has thrown their way. When they want something, they go after it—especially when it’s the right woman.

Rhenna Morgan writes for the same reason she reads—to escape reality.

Yes, her life rocks—two beautiful little girls, a great husband, a steady job, and the kind of friends that would take you out back if you hurt her. But, like most women, she’s got obligations stacked tight from dusk to dawn. So, when the world gets her down, she slips into something…less realistic.

Romance is a must. So is a steamy romp (or four). Nothing thrills her more than the fantasy of new, exciting worlds, strong, intuitive men, and the sigh of, “Oh if only that could happen to me.”

So, if you’re picking up one of her books, expect portals into alternate realms and men who’ll fight to keep the women they want. Romantic escape for the women who need it.

Nothing good grows in the shadow of secrets.

A reluctant warrior in a rebellion he abhors, Reese Theron has buckled beneath blackmail to keep the circumstances of his birth on lockdown. He’s lost everything that counts—the right to fight for his king, the trust of his best friend, and any hope for a family of his own. Death seems preferable, until Galena Shantos meets him at his fateful crossroads and saves his life.

Galena’s loyalty to her brother, the king, is absolute. Healing his warriors on the sidelines of war, she’s witnessed too many rebellion atrocities to be swayed for mercy. Yet something about Reese blurs the lines of allegiance, the call to her heart raw and primitive.

When Reese ends up a prisoner of war, he’s visited by a mysterious being of another race and learns he’s the linchpin in a battle between good and evil. The lovers will face choices—Galena between family loyalty and championing Reese’s cause, and Reese between keeping his shameful secret, and saving all races by leading the darkest of his kind to redemption—starting with his own confession.
Excerpt:

Chapter 1
A lightning bolt sheared past Reese into the smoke-filled night sky and left an acrid stench in its wake. Streaks of fire and blue-white fingers of electricity flared so bright he could barely focus. He wasn’t getting out of this. Not this battle, or this life, with any modicum of honor.
Darting through the air, he dodged another electrical strike.
An elite flashed into view and swung wide, his bloodied dagger aimed at Reese’s gut.
Reese barrel-rolled up and over his attacker, wrapped him in a chokehold, and masked their presence from the rest of the fighters. Praise the Great One, he should be fighting beside this warrior, not against him.
The warrior flailed and tried to break free, the lack of footing giving him zero leverage. He slumped, unconscious, into Reese’s ready hold seconds later.
He lowered them both to the tree line at the battle’s edge, out of site from the rebels. The man couldn’t be more than twenty years outside his awakening. Probably barely into his elite torc and cuffs. Beneath Reese’s fingers, the man’s pulse thrummed slow, but steady. At least this innocent’s death wouldn’t be on his conscience.
A twenty-five-foot wall of flame exploded across the open field and rattled the air and earth around them. The bright flare faded under heavy night, and more rebellion warriors thunked to the mottled field.
The sharp rustle of leaves against the forest floor sounded down the tree line, one quick shift and then silence.
Reese backed deeper into the foliage and strengthened the mask that kept him hidden. It couldn’t be a rebellion man. All those were engaged against the malran’s warriors. Focusing his thoughts, he sought the soulless black thread that represented the link he’d grudgingly created with Maxis Steysis, and traced his location.
No, not the rebellion leader either. His energy showed more than ten miles to the east, well away from the fight. Reese levitated off the forest floor and floated through the trees. Gnarled and leafless branches scraped his cheek and shoulders. Darkness enveloped him, broken only by the bright attacks where the forest opened to the battle beyond.
There. Not five feet from the tree line, a figure knelt facing the battle.
He drifted closer. The sweet, damp scent of soil and decomposing leaves overpowered the metallic residue of electrical strikes floating on the wind. Grunts, shouts, and the too-frequent thuds of perished men sounded in a haphazard pattern.
A flash spotlighted long, auburn hair. A woman. Bowed over a body, she cradled a fallen companion’s head in her lap.
Reese angled to better see her and nearly faltered in holding his mask. His heart kicked in an awkward rhythm and reality faded to nothingness. Galena Shantos, sister to the malran. The last person he wanted to witness his disgrace.
Seventy years since he’d seen her this close. Her elegant features were still as staggering as the days when he’d trained to serve the malran, but there was more to her now. A confidence in the way she protected her charge and watched the battle. Knowledge behind her tropical blue-green eyes that spoke of experience and age.
And he fought alongside the men who battled her brother.
Galena flinched at another blast and hugged the limp body she cradled tight. As the light dimmed, she uncurled from her burden.
Another woman, her long blond hair stark against Galena’s black tunic and leggings, and her sightless eyes aimed at the heavens.
No. Surely not. Reese crept closer, pressure building at his temples. The zings and thunder of battle rumbled louder, and his gut clenched.
Phybe. She’d been alive when Reese left her, tucked away in a zeolite mine where Maxis couldn’t trace her link. He touched down in the thick carpet of leaves at Galena’s right and dropped his mask. “I failed her.”
Galena jerked and reached for something beneath one leg. “Who are you?”
Smudges marked Phybe’s ashen face, her blue gown torn and satin slippers stained. Somehow Maxis had found her and finished the job he’d sent Reese to do. “He’ll kill me for trying to save her.”
More strikes burst through the thick residual smoke, the malran’s fighters airborne and casting one attack after another. Fewer than twenty rebellion men still lived, half retreating north.
“A cause that fights without honor isn’t worth fighting, is it?” he said.
Galena straightened and squared her shoulders. “I’d have a hard time counting on honor from any man who fights with Maxis.”
“You’re right. I gave that up the moment I agreed to his schemes.” He crouched beside them.
Galena tensed and tightened her grip on whatever she hid beneath her leg.
Reese palmed Phybe’s forehead, cool and lifeless. May your journey be swift and your spirit find peace with The Great One. The same Myren prayer he’d offered his mother when she’d drawn her last breath. He stepped back. Maybe it was time to find his own peace. On his own terms. “You don’t remember me do you?”
She shook her head. A terse, barely-there jerk as she eased from beneath her dead charge, crouched on the balls of her feet and coiled for escape.
“My name is Reese Theron.”
She froze, flashes of light from the battle winking off the edge of her blade. She assessed him head to toe, no spark of recognition.
Maybe if he’d been braver all those years ago, he’d have had a chance with her. Or broken his vow and killed Maxis himself when he’d had the chance. He shook the memories off. He’d taken the wrong path and now it was time to pay. “Call your guards. Make sure they know you’re in danger.”
A gunshot rattled the skies and a woman’s blood-curdling scream sounded across the battlefield.
Galena lurched to a stand and then stopped, zigzagging her attention between the shouts along the battlefield and Phybe’s body.
Now was his chance. Either he took the brave farewell, or he’d die by Maxis’ hands. “Your face is a good one to remember. Go with The Great One, Galena.” He shot to the sky and built a violent ball of energy in his palm, sharp tendrils darting from its center. Drawing back, he aimed the bogus attack at Galena. Surely The Great One would understand.
An elite guard spun from across the skies and drew back for counter- attack.
Reese braced for impact.
A streak of auburn flashed below him. Galena, spearing through the air, her trajectory centered between the elite and Reese.
The energy in his palm fizzled. Not her. Not Galena.
Lightning fired from the elite’s palm, sheered past Galena’s cheek, and pierced his shoulder. He jerked and spasmed, locked in place by the force of the strike. Blue-black spots dotted his vision and his lungs seized.
A woman’s scream ripped through the air.
Wind whipped around him, dead weight as he fell, and darkness took
over.
* * * *
Galena twisted midair and shot toward Reese, wind blurring her eyesight.
His arms and legs flailed boneless as he hurtled to the earth.
She’d never make it before impact. Even if he survived the fall, Jagger’s strike had been a killing shot, off by inches at most.
Reese crashed against the unforgiving ground, his head and limbs thunking against the trampled turf.
She landed seconds behind him. The sticky iron scent of blood, dirt,
and sweat surrounded her. So many men strewn across the grass, their bodies contorted in unnatural shapes.
Less than ten feet away one of her brother’s men struggled for breath, unconscious with a trail of blood at his temple. A loyal fighter who’d battled against an indecent and cruel rebellion.
But it was Reese her palms burned to touch. To feel the beat of his heart. She dropped to her knees and rolled Reese to his back, muscles surging with wells of strength she’d never felt.
His pulse fluttered beneath her fingertips, faint and irregular.
A thud sounded behind her. Her name registered, a voice she recognized.
She ignored the call. Shedding her mortal form, she dove into Reese’s unconscious body and let her spirit spread and assess. Gaping, charred flesh at least two fists wide, muscle and sinew around it lifeless from the electrical shock. She followed the damage, too much impairment radiating dangerously close to his heart. She couldn’t lose him. Traitor or not, her instincts didn’t care. Only knew this moment would shape the rest of her life in a way she didn’t dare ignore.
Shouts rang out beside her. Short, brusque words delivered with a frustrated bite. Footsteps shuffled around her and the injured moaned. Detached in spirit but still connected to her physical senses, the muffled distractions rattled as she healed.
Five inches. That was the gift of her intervention. Had she not flown in the path of Jagger’s bolt, he’d have pierced Reese’s heart. Blood seeped from the violent gash and his heart trembled with the aftershocks of the delivering jolt.
Swift and sure, she spread her spirit, cauterizing and mending the most critical lesions. A touch here. A brush there.
Near his heart, a fine opaque mist appeared.
Her spirit vision faltered. The odd substance settled into every nook and cranny. It shimmered and sparkled, a mix between morning dew and midnight fog. Seventy years she’d been healing men and not once had she seen anything like it.
“Damn it, Lena, we need you.” The admonition rang in her ear and a firm hand clamped on her shoulder.
Galena ripped her spirit from Reese’s body and spun in a levitated twist to a defensive crouch, hands lifted to protect herself. Her vision wavered.
Ramsay came into focus, the whites around his gray eyes glowing in a way that promised dire loss of control and a vicious scowl aimed squarely at her. “What in histus is wrong with you?”
Her knees nearly buckled. Maybe she’d put too much into her healing. “He’s wounded.”
“He’s a traitor. To me and to Eryx.” Glaring at her, he swept his arm behind him. “What about them?”
There were dozens of them. Good men, battered, bloody, and fatigued. Most were upright and lumbering across the battlefield, checking for rebellion survivors. Six were laid out for triage close to Maxis’ estate, Eryx and Ludan seeing to their care.
Her cheeks burned and her stomach pitched. There wasn’t any logic to defend her actions. She’d acted on pure emotion and instinct, and put the lives of loyal men at risk, but she still wouldn’t change what she’d done. Not a second. A truth she wasn’t altogether sure how to process.
“Focus on the ones worthy of your gift. Not someone—”
“Enough.” She straightened and met her brother’s scowl. Every muscle shook with fatigue. “I watched an innocent woman die tonight. Held her in my arms while she screamed.”
“Trust me.” Ramsay glowered at the unconscious man behind her. “He’s not innocent.”
For years she’d trusted her brothers. Loved and followed them with unwavering loyalty wherever they asked her to go. Until this moment. She inched forward on trembling legs, hands fisted at her sides. “Innocent or not, I saw goodness in him. Watched him say a prayer over Phybe’s body and felt his grief. Healing is my gift to use when and how The Great One guides me. Not to be commandeered and directed by a man swept up in the heat of battle. Life is life, no matter whose heart feeds it.”
Ramsay sneered. “Even Maxis Steysis?”
Nearly six hundred years their families had been at war, since their grandfather left Maxis’ grandmother pregnant at the altar in favor of a commoner.
“Everyone has a shred of goodness in them.” Well, maybe not Maxis. But she’d be damned if she let Ramsay question her judgment. There was a reason she was drawn to Reese. She just needed a little time to figure out why. “If you’d stop and think for a minute you’d know saving him is a smart move. If he fought with Maxis, he knows things. Things you won’t be able to learn anywhere else.”
Reese’s chest rose and fell, slow and steady. With a push from her senses, she registered the faint but solid rhythm of his heart. More than anything she ached to kneel beside him. To finish the job she’d begun and skim her fingers through his wild hair. Perhaps link her fingers with his long, tapered ones and rest alongside him while she waited for him to wake.
Praise The Great One, what was wrong with her? This protectiveness didn’t make sense.
Eryx’s best friend and somo, Ludan, shouted from the furthest edge of battle. “Ramsay.”
Galena knew that tone. Had heard it after too many battles. Another warrior in need of care. With a last glance at Reese to placate herself, she headed in Ludan’s direction. “I’ve got it.”
Three steps in she stopped and glared at Ramsay. “You may not care for him. May see him as the vilest of men. But do not disrespect my gift by hurting him.”
She left her frowning brother behind, and prayed the promise of a traitor’s information would stay Ramsay’s hand until she returned.
