It has been a year since Sulis Hasifel fled to the desert, narrowly escaping death at the hands of a vengeful god. The time of the final battle, the final confrontation with the deities of her world, is nearing. Lured by the call of their long-trapped powers, the deities will descend upon the Obsidian Temple, where the Chosen await.

But the war between gods and humans has enveloped the entire land. Sulis’s twin, Kadar, joins forces with the nomadic warrior tribes of the desert. Little by little, the desert armies draw the deities away from their stronghold in the north, towards their doom.

In the face of a battle that will reshape mankind’s destiny and the face of the earth itself, old friendships will be tested and new alliances forged.

In this spellbinding denouement to Desert Rising and The Obsidian Temple, Kelley Grant brings her epic trilogy to a thunderous and powerful conclusion.

Review: Smoke and Mirrors by Jess Haines

Smoke and Mirrors
Author: Jess Haines
Release Date: May 1, 2016
Publisher: Self-Published
ASIN:   B01EQF5CAW
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author
A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she's just like all the other magi.

A dragon who sees through her lies.

Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.

Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she's got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can't afford at her part time job in a cafĂ©, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.

The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.

As an illusionist, she doesn't have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduates—and legendary treasure hoards are an added bonus—she thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems...

Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight....

Loved it, couldn't put it down. Jess Haines new series, Blackhollow Academy, takes place in the same world as her H&W Investigations series. We do get to hear about and see some characters, but the Blackhollow Academy series has characters and a storyline of its own.

I was completely enthralled with the story in SMOKE AND MIRRORS. I found the main heroine Kimberly to be extremely hard working and down to earth. It was very easy to tap into Kimberly's emotions which made the story that much more enjoyable as the trials and tribulations she went through came to pass. Even though she has not lived an easy life and doesn't have much herself, she was very willing to help others in need. I just really liked her and can't wait to see how her life will continue to unfold in the next book. There is romance in SMOKE AND MIRRORS. It's slow and a bit turbulent, but it was also real and well played out. The development of said relationship is another thing I'm looking forward to in book two.

My only complaint about SMOKE AND MIRRORS is that sometimes it read like a YA novel and sometimes like an adult novel and to this day I'm not quite sure where it should land. As I said already, I'm looking forward to reading book two and I keep checking the authors pages to see when it might be planned.

I gave it 5/5 stars

Asteria of the Second Legion of demons has messed up. Royally. With a capital everything. Certain that her dark lord is about to end her in the most painful way imaginable, she’s stunned when the fallen angel offers her an uncharacteristic shot at redemption—and determined not to fail him again. With her life on the line, she sets out on a mission that sounds easy but proves to be far from it when a hot slice of angelic eye candy comes storming into her life, stirring dangerous desires and tempting her more than any male before him.

Fifth Commander of the Echelon, the highest order of angels in Heaven and those responsible for hunting demons, he will allow nothing to stand in the way of fulfilling the mission he began close to a century ago so he can finally return to his home. On the verge of securing the half-breed he has been hunting, he can almost taste victory—until a sassy demoness struts into his life, awakening wicked needs and forbidden hungers that will test him to his limit.

When their mission brings them on a collision course, can they fight the fierce heat of the passion that blazes between them to claim a victory for their side or will it burn their resistance to ashes and set their hearts on fire with a love both forbidden and eternal?

Ruined Book #1

Genre: YA Fantasy

Emelina Flores has nothing. Her home in Ruina has been ravaged by war. She lacks the powers of her fellow Ruined. Worst of all, she witnessed her parents’ brutal murders and watched helplessly as her sister, Olivia, was kidnapped.

But because Em has nothing, she has nothing to lose. Driven by a blind desire for revenge, Em sets off on a dangerous journey to the enemy kingdom of Lera. Somewhere within Lera’s borders, Em hopes to find Olivia. But in order to find her, Em must infiltrate the royal family.

In a brilliant, elaborate plan of deception and murder, Em marries Prince Casimir, next in line to take Lera’s throne. If anyone in Lera discovers Em is not Casimir’s true betrothed, Em will be executed on the spot. But it’s the only way to salvage Em’s kingdom and what is left of her family.

Em is determined to succeed, but the closer she gets to the prince, the more she questions her mission. Em’s rage-filled heart begins to soften. But with her life—and her family—on the line, love could be Em’s deadliest mistake.

We learn a lot about Emelina, her family and Ruina in RUINED. Em is useless in the eyes of Ruina's people as she has no magic. Just because she doesn't have any magic doesn't mean she can't take care of herself and kick ass. She definitely can and proves it time and time again throughout RUINED. I found Em to be pretty fierce and I really liked her determination. Having said that, after learning all that is revealed I was shocked with Em's determination to save her people and her sister from Lera. I don't want to go much into it because learning is part of the story, but I don't know if I would be so gun-ho to fight for these people if I was in her shoes.

Prince Casimir is nothing like I was expecting. I found him to be loyal to those he considers worthy, caring and genuinely willing to listen to all sides of an issue before making a judgment on something—which was surprising after seeing and hearing about his mother and father. The romance between Em and Casimir is turbulent but sweet. There original relationship is built on lies, but there are true feelings and after Casimir learns the truth he still cares deeply about her. They have a lot to work through though.

RUINED is fast paced and full of action. I'm not usually a fan of multiple POVs but both characters were interesting and Tintera made the transitions nice and smooth.

I honestly can't even begin to put into words how I feel about Emelina's sister. I can't believe Em sees her as Ruina's future. I know there will be some epic issues with her and the way she handles things in book two when it comes out next year. I definitely want to see where things lead, so book two is already on my wishlist.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Welcome to Dominion City.

After the great Plague descended, the world population was decimated...and their genetics damaged beyond repair.

The Lasters wait hopelessly for their genes to self-destruct. The Splicers pay for expensive treatments that might prolong their life. The plague-resistant True Borns are as mysterious as they are feared…

And then there's Lucy Fox and her identical twin sister, Margot. After endless tests, no one wants to reveal what they are.

When Margot disappears, a desperate Lucy has no choice but to put her faith in the True Borns, led by the charismatic Nolan Storm and the beautiful but deadly Jared Price. As Lucy and the True Borns set out to rescue her sister, they stumble upon a vast conspiracy stretching from Dominion’s street preachers to shady Russian tycoons. But why target the Fox sisters?

As they say in Dominion, it’s in the blood.

TRUE BORN was a unique read with a great mix if fantasy, post apocalyptic and dystopian elements.

Sterling has a great way with words making it really easy to fall into her writing style and picture the world that the True Born Trilogy takes place in. I enjoyed the characters in TRUE BORN. I did find the main characters Lucy a bit annoying at times, but seeing as this is a young adult series I couldn't really hold her whiny moments and childish behavior too much against her. I did wish that she acted a little more grown up during those times though.

There is a tiny bit of romance in TRUE BORN. It doesn't take over the whole story, but the connection between Lucy and Jared brought some interesting elements to the story. I cab see future development in future books with these two and I look forward to learning more about Jared.

I was a tiny bit surprised with the ending. I of course can't tell you why without giving things away. I really wanted more answers bu the end of TRUE BORN, but not getting them does make me want to read book two, so I guess that is something.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars
