Promo + Giveaway: Dark Siren by Eden Ashley

Dark Siren
Dark Siren #1
Amazon iTunes BN Smashwords
To survive, their bond must be unbreakable.

When the mysterious and passionate Rhane rescues Kali from an attacker in the theater parking lot, they form an immediate, smoldering connection. But Kali doesn't remember Rhane or anything from their past. As far as Kali knows, she's just a seventeen-year-old kid coping with an insatiable hunger for the “spark” or energy of others, feeding on classmates to survive.

A unique artifact—one that may hold the key to returning Kali’s memories—is uncovered by the archaeology firm where she works part-time, sending Kali and Rhane on a dangerous journey that leads them to the Forbidden City, into the unforgiving Gobi, and into the ruins of Rhane’s ancient homeland. As they fight for survival, Kali begins to discover who she really is and the true power she possesses.

But Rhane still harbors a secret that could destroy Kali…unless old enemies kill her first.
Excerpt 2: Rhane

The stranger shifted, leaning over until his mouth was within a millimeter of her left ear. He spoke softly, his lips brushing against some serious nerve endings, “Is this seat taken?”
With a nervous shiver, she blinked long and slow, savoring the low and sexy quality of his voice. Then she edged away to put at least an inch between his lips and her ear. If he touched her like that again, Kali was very likely to embarrass herself. Just as she was about to answer his question, the room brightened with light from the illuminated screen. What Kali saw made her jaw drop.
If an eighty-year-old grandmother had been sitting next to her when this guy had shown up, Kali would have politely asked the old lady to move so the stranger could sit down. He was absurdly good looking. Silver lighting accented every perfect line and angle of his face. Several locks from his thick mass of hair fell idly across his forehead, slightly curling at the ends. There was softness to his features that suggested he could be a keeper.
The stranger returned Kali’s stare with an intensity that took in every part of her. But his eyes never left her face.
Realizing she had been staring at him stupidly for far too long, Kali struggled to find something to say. “I’m…” She cleared her throat. “It’s yours.”
He finally looked away. Whatever tied her to him was loosed, and Kali pulled her gaze away. They didn’t speak again for a long time, but Kali was constantly aware of him. She kept stealing furtive glances in his direction because the sight of him was more enthralling than anything the movie had to offer. Growing bolder, Kali watched him from the corner of her eye at increasingly longer intervals. Apparently, the stranger was not as bothered as she was. Relaxed in his seat, he sat observing the screen with languid interest, doing a pretty good job convincing her that he’d forgotten anyone was beside him. Kali was so immersed with watching him, and was completely startled when he spoke.
“It’s not polite to stare,” he murmured softly without taking his eyes from the screen.
Kali jerked and turned away. But she wasn’t fast enough and was mortified to see the beginning of a satisfied smile appear on his face. She slid down into the chair, grateful for the darkness that concealed a blush spreading across her cheeks. From then on she tried to concentrate on the movie. But it was useless. She gave up and watched the screen absently, all the while thinking about the guy sitting next to her and how he probably thought she was an absolute dork. She didn’t get it. Boys never had this affect on her. For the past two years, it had always been them falling helplessly at her feet.
A mutated mix of human and creature launched itself from a quiet scene, growling and snarling into the camera. Several audience members jumped in surprise, and Kali was one of them. She made a noise that sounded like a strangled bird.
“Do these things frighten you?” the stranger asked. He was clearly enjoying her discomfort.
Kali cleared her throat. “Why would they? This stuff isn’t real.” This time, she didn’t look at him.
After a long moment, he spoke again. “Right,” he slowly agreed.

Review: Company Town by Madeline Ashby

Company Town

Meet Hwa. One of the few in her community to forego bio-engineered enhancements, she’s the last truly organic person left on the rig. But she’s an expert in the arts of self-defence, and she’s been charged with training the Family’s youngest, who has been receiving death threats – seemingly from another timeline.

Meanwhile, a series of interconnected murders threatens the city’s stability – serial killer? Or something much, much worse...?

When I started reading COMPANY TOWN it was nothing like I thought it would be. I found it odd and had a hard time staying in the story. I forced myself to keep going and not only did it get interesting, but I ended up enjoying it.

I thought COMPANY TOWN was a bit odd and somewhat boring until Hwa became the bodyguard to Joel. I thought at that point things started really happening and we really got to know Hwa. I really enjoyed the bond that developed between Hwa and her charge and the relationship between her and Daniel was of interest as well. I truly didn't see some things coming which is always nice in a storyline.

The world building in COMPANY TOWN was by far the strongest part of the story. From the people that make up the world, to the actual world itself, Ashby's imagination was far from boring. I found it all very imaginative and original.

If you can get past the beginning, I think COMPANY TOWN will grow on you.

I gave it 3/5 stars

War is coming . . .

When the FBI uses an anti-magic law to arrest and torture Riley's boyfriend, they have no idea what hell they are about to unleash. If Riley can't rescue Clay before he breaks, the result will be a disaster of epic proportions.

With time running out, Riley and her family must rely on two people more likely to stab them in the back than actually help. And, even if Riley manages the rescue, she's still got to deal with two kidnappings and the return of her dad from the dead--the same dad who'd been willing to see her dead to protect his secrets.

What's a girl to do? Kick ass, take names, and protect those she cares about at all costs.

I don't know how, but I completely forgot about the ending of EDGE OF DREAMS. It all quickly came back to me as I started reading the first chapter of WHISPER OF SHADOWS and I enjoyed every minute of it.  I absolutely love how close Riley is with her step mother and her siblings. They have each others backs at every turn and are willing to follow each other no matter where it might take them. WHISPER OF SHADOWS brings some pretty heartbreaking moments that will be felt in every situation from here on out. I know the characters strong bonds will help them get through future trials, but I can already tell how hard it will be for all of them.

One person that really surprised me in WHISPER OF SHADOWS was Riley's sister. She really stuck up for herself and put her siblings in their place. She was sick of being treated like she was made of glass and she showed them how helpful and capable she can be when they let her. I loved it. Riley and Clay continue to grow closer. I honestly wasn't sure where their relationship would go in book one, but now I can't imagine them without each other and they can't either. Clay's brother has definitely grown on me. He is a great ally for Riley and her crew and he is really starting to show a different side of himself.

There was a ton of action in WHISPER OF SHADOWS. I think it is my favorite book of the series so far. I can't imagine Riley and her gang not being in danger, but I look forward to seeing them get out of their next jam.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: The Queen's Dance by Jamie Schmidt

Are you ready for Champ? This dragon stud might be limited on land thanks to being a water dragon but there's no finer protector for Queen Margery. If you love dragon shifters don't miss this newest installment in the Emerging Queens series.

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?
I hate shoe shopping.  I have a wide foot and a high arch and I can never, ever, find cute shoes to fit me.  Once a year, I order like ten pairs from Zappos and try them all on, hoping that one pair will fit and I can keep them. Most of the time, they all get sent back.  I wind up with a pair of sneakers that I wear all year and a pair of sandals that I wear all summer.
What do you enjoy doing on your down time?
I like to read and knit.  I'm a big fan of napping too, but I usually would rather surf around on Facebook or play World of Warcraft than "waste time" sleeping.  I also like to shop.  A trip to the mall isn't complete without a visit to the LUSH cosmetics store, Teavana or David's Tea (or both),
What is your Favorite part of writing?
Writing "The End."  I also like going to plotting weekends with my writer friends and having writing retreats away from home where I can sleep as late as I want, have someone make me blueberry pancakes for breakfast and then brainstorm creative processes with my peeps.
Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?
After I've procrastinated all I can and the housework is mostly done (for the moment), I like to get a cold drink -- usually tea or diet coke.  My cat hangs out with me and keeps me company.  I also put on headphones and either stream Pandora's 80's and 90's music station or my own Youtube playlist for the book.
What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?
It's a huge list.  Darynda Jones, Ilona Andrews, Ann Bishop, Nalini Singh, Grace Draven, Meljean Brook, Mary Janice Davidson, Jim Butcher, Simon R. Green, Seanan McGuire, Cecy Robson, Karen Marie Moning, Bec McMaster, Jeaniene Frost, Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, Lora Leigh, Lyndsay Burokers, Stacia Kane, Jill Myles and a boatload more.

Excerpt #2:

The healing burn of the sun pinned Margery to the ground. Her eyes wouldn’t open, but she could see the blazing orange from under her lids. She’d been saved. Pressing her cheek against the sun-warmed grass, she took a deep breath of fresh air for the first time in a week. Coughs racked her body. She was still so weak. A tear leaked out of her eye.
“Please don’t cry, chérie. You’re safe here.”
That was the lake dragon. The one who’d helped rescue her. Margery’s hands clutched the ground. She was no longer on the water, trapped in a smuggler’s hold hidden under the deck of a yacht. No longer lying in her own waste, dying a slow and painful death.
“Where am I?” she asked, her words coming out as a strangled whisper.
“You’re at my home in North Hero, Vermont. It’s very private here.”
He had a sexy way of talking. French Canadian accent, if she wasn’t mistaken. It was comforting, nonthreatening. Margery stretched as the healing sunbeams sank into her core.
“Your kidnappers have been brought to justice.”
They were more than kidnappers. In return for pimping Margery out to Champ, they had wanted him to turn a blind eye to their smuggling operation on his lake.
The doll!
Margery bolted upright and regretted it immediately. “Where is it?” she cried. The sun blinded her, but she didn’t care. She groped around with her hands.
“What?” he said, panic in his voice.
“The Smooshie.”
“What the hell is a—” Champ cut himself off and continued in a more polite tone. “I don’t understand, my Queen.”
Queen? Oh, right.
“The red dragon doll. I had it in my hand when you rescued me. It’s very important.”
“Uh, hold on. Let me check my truck.”
She heard him run.
Great. He probably thought she was an idiot looking for her little dolly.
Rubbing her eyes, Margery tried to stand up. But her legs refused to obey her, muscles trembling as she strained to rise.
The pirates had grabbed her when her camera’s flash malfunctioned and went off while she was taking pictures of their illicit activity—stuffing the dolls with drugs. When they saw her, they tried to kill her. If she’d been human, they would have. But when the bullets tore into her, she had instinctively shifted into her sky dragon form.
She’d only been a dragon for three weeks. Actually, she had always been a dragon, but an ancient curse had stopped her shift at puberty and blocked her dragon magic. When that curse was shattered, all the suppressed Queens shifted into their true forms. It took a lot of getting used to. The first week, all she did was cry and break things. The second week she flew around the world over and over again until sheer exhaustion claimed her. By the time the third week rolled around, Margery figured she’d better get over herself and return to her career as an investigative reporter.

And don't miss the rest of the Emerging Queens series:

FBI dragon Reed’s disdain for humans can’t mask the magnetic attraction he has for Carolyn, but when she tells him she’s going to shift into a dragon he thinks she’s crazy. A female hasn’t been hatched, or shape shifted, in over a thousand years. He’s proven wrong after Carolyn shifts and is named the new Queen on the block. When the Cult of Humanity kidnaps Carolyn to sacrifice her, Reed must face his fears—and feelings, racing to save the woman he realizes he can’t live without.

Viola Pierce has never had particularly great luck with guys. That is, until the day she shifts into a glorious, deadly, three-headed dragon. As it turns out, Viola is a dragon Queen. As a rule, Sergei hates Queens, but the Viola's beauty and humanity reach something deep within him. When she names him her protector and consort—quite by accident—a heated and unexpected attraction grows. But the dragon court is ruthless...and what doesn't kill Viola will only make her more dangerous.

Guest Blog: Bound by Carmen Fox

UFI welcomes Author Carmen Fox. Thanks for Joining us!!

Why I Write

I’m a writer who never intended to put her work out there. But what I publish, I believe in. I’m not saying I push the envelope, but I try new things. This is what gets me excited.

I know my way around urban fantasy, so I feel confident that Divide and Conquer was original in several respects. Two female protagonists. One main character dies. A danger that isn’t touchable or fightable. A prophecy that fails.
Divide and Conquer is perhaps not “ground-breaking,” but the story is unusual enough to stand out.

Guarded was my homage to urban fantasy, and the first book I ever completed. It features any paranormal species you can think of: vampires and werewolves, fae, demons and djinn. What tickled me about this book, in particular? My vampire isn’t a sullen Twilight character, but a charming, funny guy who’s more metrosexual than typical “alpha male.” The werewolf alpha is grumpy all right, as befitting the genre, but both the main character and her sidekick make fun of him for that. The vampire is NOT intended to be a love interest. The djinn don’t fulfill anyone’s wishes. And the main character isn’t a doe-eyed human, but a sexually charged (half) satyr, who must embrace who and what she is. And then I heaped so much mystery onto it, it takes an alert reader to keep up.

Bound is another departure for me personally, as I’m venturing into romance territory. It’s still an urban fantasy, light in tone and written only from a male POV (which was a new challenge for me) and delves deep into the funny, charming vampire from Guarded. Rather than being a proud specimen of his kind, he’s rather embarrassed about being a vampire and does his best to act and think like a werewolf. Then he falls in love with a werewolf (who hates vampires), and he’s forced to deal with his identity. This is highlighted by the return of the sire who made him. His sire, in turn, can’t stand werewolves. Oops.
I didn’t want another vampire versus werewolf story. I wanted a vampire as a werewolf story.

My next book, *insert title here*, is intended to offer a different reading experience to people who have read Guarded and Bound than to people who haven’t. Also, I’m introducing a new type of magic and will focus more on the djinn angle.

My point is this. I love it when readers get involved and feed me ideas. If I can accommodate them, I will. No problem. But I need books to offer me this “never done by me before” feel. That means that no two books of mine will be the same. Writing makes me feel like Christopher Columbus. Except I’m not just exploring new worlds but also new ideas, mixing genres in a way that no one’s thought of.

Come join me on my adventure.

The Silverton Chronicles #2
Amazon Smashwords iBooks BN

Bound by blood. Bound by loyalty. Bound by love.

Florian has it all: excellent fashion sense, a kickass job with his best friend, and a hard-won place among Silverton’s werewolves. When a pack of females pads into their territory, Flo’s alpha dispatches him to handle a merger. Total cakewalk. Except Keely, their alpha, has no intention of submitting her wolves to Flo's larger pack. Worse, a single glance from her baby blues sends his eloquence on vacation and his heartbeat into overdrive. His flirtations seem welcome too, but there's a snag. She doesn’t know he’s a vampire.

While Flo struggles with his conflicts—obey his alpha or win over Keely—his estranged sire blasts into town with a catalog of radical ideas. And hanging out with unsophisticated werewolves didn't make the list.

With violence in the air and all sides testing his loyalties, Florian must bite back, even if showing his fangs costs him the girl.
Excerpt:

With the ceiling spinning above me, I spat out his taste. Even that took effort. My body was a mess of floppy appendages without the muscles to shift. But I’d done it. I’d pushed my sire out of my mind. Did that mean I was free of him now?
Gino shot to his feet. “Get up.”

He turned his back to me and stared through a gap in the curtains.

I tightened my jaw, scrambled up, and had to lean on the armchair. No strength. Lack of blood. Total head rush.

“You are not to see your friends again, is that understood?” The sharpness of his voice didn't ease the thudding in my head.

I hitched my shoulders to restart my suffering circulation.

“Ali?” I called with my mind.

He would give me strength.

“Ali?”

Nothing. My knees trembled. The hollow Ali had carved out and filled with his bothersome emotions lay empty.

Memories of when we first met streamed into the void. We’d laughed, and we’d argued, and gotten piss-drunk at the local bar more than twice, but we’d always, always been like brothers inside that hollow.

I touched my pockets, felt my jacket for…for what? This was crazy.

He could be busy, or he simply hadn’t heard me.

“Ali? Where are you?”

“Florian.” Gino’s pitch tightened. “I need you to listen.”

I’d ejected Gino from my mind too late. Ali was gone. My sire’s remaking of me had snapped our link like a brittle twig.
