NIGHTSHADE introduces a brand new world where vampires aka shades are persona non grata. McKenna is tasked with taking down a group of shades that are killing humans and finds himself working with the beautiful Lindy who just happens to be a shade who wants to help him take them down.

I wish NIGHTSHADE had been longer. It felt too short and lacked a bit of the details I would have liked to see between the pages. One thing NIGHTSHADE didn't lack was action and suspense. Things start off pretty quickly and the pace stays pretty fast until the end.

I thought the characters were well developed for the little time I had to learn about them. I learned just enough about them to be interested in what happened to them and get a good grasp on how I felt about them and their place in the story. Alex and Lindy had a spark, but it really wasn't explored. They both feel it though and I think it will be explored in the future as they continue their partnership.

With the ending of NIGHTSHADE I have no doubt that this was the start to a new series. You just can't end a stand-alone like Olson ended NIGHTSHADE and not have a follow-up. I am definitely intrigued after reading NIGHTSHADE and will keep an eye out for book two.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I have the most supportive husband in the world.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Talking about writing with other writerly people and I love going to the movies.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Making stuff up of course, plus I love getting into my character’s heads.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I wouldn’t say that I follow certain routines but I need to have it quiet while I write. I’m not someone who can go to a coffee shop and write. I get distracted easily.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

How would you pitch Her Black Wings, Book one of the Dark Amulet Series to someone who has not heard of it before?

It’s about learning to believe in yourself and finding redemption through second chances. The heroine wasn’t the best person in the world but at the end of her life she made the ultimate sacrifice to save someone’s life and earned a chance to redeem her soul. The hot angel sent to help doesn’t hurt either.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Her Black Wings, Book one of the Dark Amulet Series is set in?

The book is primarily set in the Detroit area. We also visit my interpretation on Heaven and Hell but I don’t call either place that. Hell is called Netherworld and it’s cavernous, hot and full of several types of demons. Some are half goat and half human looking and some have the heads of animals like bulls or rams. Heaven is called Arcadia and mainly it’s full of white sandstone buildings suspended by an unseen force. My characters have only shown me where the angels live, the place where humans go after their deaths is somewhere most angels aren’t allowed.  

Do you have a favorite scene in Her Black Wings?

I have many favorites. This is one of them: meet cute

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I wrote a romantic suspense with a serial killer. He was the hardest character to write, he wouldn’t cooperate. He ended up so boring, apart from the murdering, that I had to cut most of his scenes. I’m still resentful over it.

My favorite character is Amalya. She’s awesome because not only did she go toe to toe with her antagonists, she grew as a person and continues to surprise me.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

The second book in the Dark Amulet Series, Her Black Heart will be out August 23 and I also have a romantic suspense about a guy who falls for a woman whose father is investigating him for murder, called Tattoo Killer. I don’t yet have a release date for that one. I’m also working on book three of the Dark Amulet series called Her Black Soul.

A.J. Norris is a romantic suspense and paranormal romance novelist.  She began writing as a way to dim down the voices inside her head. She enjoys being able to get inside someone else's head, even a fictional one, and see what they see. Watching how her characters deal with difficult situations or squirm with the uncomfortable ones make the hard work of writing all worth it. She is a movie buff, especially book adaptations, loves watching her son play baseball and communing with other writers.  She lives with her family who are extremely tolerant (at least most of the time) of all her late nights behind the computer.
