Guest Blog + Giveaway: Rhodi’s Light by Megan Linski

5 Things I Would Get Dyliana Fairsson (from The Rhodi Saga) for Her Birthday
By Megan Linski

My brand new dystopian fantasy series, The Rhodi Saga, just released this month! I’m so thrilled that these books are finally available. What’s more the main character, Dylan Fairsson, has a birthday coming up on October 10th! To celebrate, I’ve picked out the top five presents Dylan would love to receive on her big day.

1. Dylan can transform into a tigress, so even though she’s not a girly girl, she’d love this plush toy from Ty to sit on her bed.

  1. This pretty qipao ties right into Dylan’s Rhodian heritage while still being trendy enough to wear on a day out with friends. Plus, it’s nimble enough to fight in just in case she runs into any enemies! With a pair of chopsticks to twist her long hair up in, Dylan will look perfect for a night out with someone special
     .

3. Dylan loves sports, so to give her something to play with her best friend, Tito, and to honor my Detroit heritage, I’m giving her a hockey stick. She’s such a tomboy, so she’d love to skate around on the ice with a puck, knocking Tito over. I’m sure she’d have a great time!

4. This shamrock charm is similar to the one given to her by close friend (and maybe something more), Enfys Baugh. Dylan would wear this bracelet everyday.

5. Dylan has a twin brother, Devin, with whom she shares a birthday, so it wouldn’t be right if she got all the presents. Devin is a big nerd, obsessed with books, science, and video games, so this Xbox console would provide a great excuse for brother/sister bonding time.

Rhodi's Light
The Rhodi Saga #1
Flight. Hyperspeed. Clairvoyance. These are some of the powers gifted to the Rhodi, an ancient sect of assassins who defend Crescentia, a dystopian world with a dying hope.

Dyliana Fairsson is one of them. After losing her parents to a suspicious accident, she and her twin brother, Devin, join the Rhodi to avoid starvation. Under the direction of her master, Dylan struggles to learn the strength of her magic …as well as hide the growing scars on her wrists.

Can Dylan become the warrior, the hero, she’s destined to be? Or is she fated to fall from the light into the darkness?

Excerpt:

Chapter One: Escaping

“Dylan! Dyliana, wake up! Get out of bed!”
The girl sleepily raised her head off the pillow and looked around, her sharp eyes piercing the darkness. Her father stood beside the bed, fully dressed and standing as straight as a board. He was pretending to be calm, yet she knew better. The face her father wore was one that she knew all too well, the one she hated and yet was frightened of at the same time. It was an expression of urgency, of fear.
“It’s time. Your mother is getting Devin up. We have to leave now.”
Dylan shook her long hair out of her face. “But I don’t…”
“Now’s not the time. Come.”
The small fifteen year old pushed back the covers and jumped out of bed, her day clothes on. She knew better than to go to sleep in pajamas anymore. What was the point? They always seemed to flee in the night.
She was a very pretty girl, with golden skin and particular orange eyes that glittered fiercely even in the darkness, but you’d never know it by the sour expression on her face. She wore baggy, tomboyish clothes and her dark black hair was tangled. She swept it sloppily beneath a hat as she clambered drowsily to her feet.
“That’s my girl. Grab your bags.” Her father handed her a suitcase, a large bag of his own by his side. Her father was muscular, rugged from years of hard work with stubble crowding his face. His black hair was trimmed short, his golden skin beaming and radiant. The feature his daughter could see most in the shadows were his two green eyes, vibrant and unrelenting in hope. She didn’t understand how that hope could still be there after they’d been uprooted so many times.
Dylan bent down and took hold of her suitcase, wanting to dawdle but knowing that if she did they could all be in danger. She slipped on her shoes and followed her father out into the hallway, down the stairs and to the front door.
“Is everyone ready, Yeshua?” a woman asked, her voice a low whisper. The full moon outside trickled through the window and lit up her face. She was a tall woman with long, wavy dark hair that nearly fell to her hips and orange eyes just like Dylan’s. Her face was exotic, the look of a desert heiress. That face had thin eyebrows that narrowed in worry.
“As ready as we can be, Kilim. How’s Devin?” the man asked.
“Sleepy,” a voice at Kilim’s side said. A boy Dylan’s age yawned and blinked at his sister. Although nearly identical in features, it was obvious from the beginning that the twins couldn’t be any different. There wasn’t a hint of a wrinkle in the boy’s neat clothes, and his glasses were polished to perfection, though too large for his small green eyes.
“You’ll get over it,” Yeshua promised. “We’re leaving now.”
The family picked up their bags and headed out of the house. As they passed through the front door Dylan noticed a window had been broken during the night. She wanted to ask what had happened but thought better of it.
After everything had been loaded into the car the four of them set down the road, only taking their bags. They left the rest of their possessions behind. The family hardly cared. It wasn’t like they had much to call their own in the first place. The two teenagers looked back as they abandoned their home, but the adults seemed to sag in relief.
“Where are we going this time?” Dylan asked with a sigh. It seemed like they were always running...always scared.
“Out of Marceleno,” Yeshua said. “And into a state called Areos. It’s very far away, but it’s closer to your aunt and uncle. We’ll have to cross several borders.”
“Out of Marceleno?” Devin repeated and Dylan’s heart sank. They moved constantly, but never out of their own country. Marceleno was their home. How could they leave that behind as well?
“We’ve switched countries before,” Kilim reminded them.
“That was when we were babies. It doesn’t count.” Dylan crossed her arms.
“Marceleno is too close to the Far East. It’s not safe to stay here anymore,” Yeshua said.
Nowhere is safe for us, Dylan thought dully, watching the willow trees rush by her window unhappily. Marceleno was beautiful with its gondolas and small stone streets, buildings that sat by long rivers crowded with artists and musicians. Areos was probably very different.
“Does Uncle Keaton know we’re coming?” Devin asked.
“No. It’s better if only we know, for now.”
Dylan made an irritated sound and shook her head. She wished that her parents would let her know who was after them or why. Whenever she asked she was only told not to speak of it. It hurt that her parents didn’t trust them enough to let her or her brother know what was going on, even though it consistently interrupted their lives. After awhile bitterness had begun to sink in. She gave up asking, and just supposed that if whoever was after them caught them she would die or be kidnapped without ever knowing why and that would be the end of it.

"Enchanting and complex. Every page is filled with magic."-Danielle Paige, New York Times best-selling author of Dorothy Must Die

Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation...and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can't trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland...

With a quirky storyline LABYRINTH LOST introduced us to an interesting group of characters and a world filled with fantasy, danger, intrigue and laws unlike our own.

Although Alex, the main character, never really made me love her, I liked following her on her journey to save her family. The things that made me keep reading LABYRINTH LOST was the imaginative world, supporting characters and the need to find out if Alex and her friends would succeed in making things right.

I was pretty surprised with the way the romance in LABYRINTH LOST turned out. I really didn't see it coming and was left wondering if I missed the signs or if they weren't there to begin with. Not that the romance was bad, just didn't feel like a very smooth transition to me and I didn't really feel the connection between the characters. It felt more forced than anything.

LABYRINTH LOST IS a young adult novel—so it's hard to fault it—but I did have an issue with the immature feel of some of the characters at a few points in the book. They would switch from being totally sensible and seem older than their age, then they would do something totally ridiculous that made them seem younger. I wish it would have been a little smoother in that regard. On top of that, Los Lagos sometimes felt way too ridiculous to be real. It was highly imaginative and reminded me a lot of Alice's Wonderland—especially the tea party scene—, but some stuff just felt unbelievable. But again. It's a young adult story, so you have to take this part of my review with a grain of salt.

The magic of the story definitely was what I loved most about LABYRINTH LOST, but it didn't really make me love it enough to read more stories going forward.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Review: Deja Who by MaryJanice Davidson

Deja Who
Release Date: September 6, 2016
Publisher: Berkley
Insighter Book #1
ISBN:   0425270394
ISBN13: 9780425270394
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Publisher
Leah Nazir is an Insighter. Reincarnation is her business. But while her clients' pasts are a mess, Leah's is nothing short of tragedy. She's been murdered. A lot. If left to that bitch, destiny, it'll happen again. Leah wants to know who's been following her through time, and who's been stalking her in the present...

P.I. Archer Drake has been hired by Leah's mother to keep an eye on her. But the more time he spends watching, the more he finds himself infatuated. Before long, he even finds himself agreeing to help find the person who wants her dead. Over and over again.

Now going full-on "rewind," Leah hopes it can stave off the inevitable. After all, she's grown fond of this life - and even fonder of nerdy Archer. But changing her pattern means finding out who her killer is today. And as Leah fears, that could be anyone she has come to know and trust. Anyone.
I have been thinking a lot about DEJA WHO since I finished reading it. Not because I loved it and it stuck with me, but because I had NO clue what to say about it. Did I like it? Well, I didn't hate it, but I didn't really fall into it either. It just kind of was.

When I read the blurb for DEJA WHO the first thing I thought was, "Wow, that's different. What a neat concept." When I started reading DEJA WHO all I thought was "What?!?!" I was completely lost in the first chapter until I got the hang of how the story was being told. On top of that I had a hard time wanting to read more in the beginning because some of the past stories of Leah's patients were really slow and downright boring. I thought a lot of that could have been left out if I'm being honest. I don't think it added anything to the story and like I said, it was boring.

By now you might be asking what I liked about DEJA WHO. I honestly am having a hard time saying. Like I said before, I didn't hate it and I was able to finish it. The characters had some flaws—ok they had a lot of flaws—but I did find them interesting. The story line was unique with some funny and eccentric moments, but I didn't love the flow and I thought there was a lot of nonsense thrown in. The big mystery of who Leah's killer was going to be kept the suspense up, but when it came to the reveal, I was less than impressed.

Will I read another installment of the Insighter series? Something in the blurb would really need to grab me.

I gave it 2.5/5 stars

Guest Blog + Giveaway: E.R.I.C. by Christina Leigh Pritchard

UFI welcomes Author Christina Leigh Pritchard. Thanks for Joining us!!

I Didn’t Work in the Real World

I didn’t grow up like most people. While classmates lined up in front of the bathroom mirror, I walked past them, day dreaming. When we were told to write a story, I cheered. Performances impressed me, Chorus wasn’t frightening, neither was band, art or drama.
Bizarre people and things were my norm. People with funny socks? Awesome! Singing songs to poor male victims I thought were cute? A thing my friends and I did. Skipping through the schoolyard, pretending to be cheerleaders for the soccer players? (I was the S in T I G E R S!)
As time goes on few of your friends still want to play these silly games. Acting, singing, learning an instrument, drawing become things that talented persons do… As you age, groups form. Imagination is replaced with reality. Each group seems to be less and less involved with each other.
But, I didn’t work in the real world.
I spent my Saturdays sitting in the lounge at Jan McArt’s Royal Palm Dinner Theater. My normal, was watching actors stretch, sing, practice their lines, and dress for their next act My first ideals were set early. I went home, read books, entered other worlds, went to the theater with my mother (she was a bar maid and a waitress) watched with my very eyes new shows, new worlds, always something new and exciting…
I had to try everything! Acting, singing, dancing, art, writing, the clarinet; I didn’t fit in any group. Why would I want to be in just one? There were so many things to try. (Except basketball; I broke more pairs of glasses in that game. Sigh.)
When I was old enough, I worked at the theater. High school can be tough on the imaginative. I never noticed. Work was another world far from reality. Sure I worked hard. But, being in that sort of environment taught me to ‘beat to my own drum’, be my own person, and not judge others for their creativity…
So, what I’m trying to say is, thank you Jan McArt, for giving me a place to flourish! Thank you for not making me grow up in the real world. Because of you, I never knew there was anything wrong with dreaming.

Reprogram of E.R.I.C. initiated. Download complete in 3…2…1…

The sweet, charming Eric that Shay knew is officially gone. He’s been reprogrammed by Dr. Cole and the other scientists aboard the marine research facility that developed Shay. Now, instead of assisting Shay in her grand scheme to save her Optional Human Parent, Darla, from certain death, Eric has been reprogrammed to kill them both. That intimate moment on the beach they shared…lost forever.

Mission complete: Suspect (S.H.A.Y.) captured…

With Eric’s help, Dr. Cole finds Shay and takes her back to the research facility where she will remain until she can be linked to her robotic host and terminated. Shay is placed into the care of a new program called N.I.C. that will analyze her data and keep her safe. Except, if the N.I.C. discovers Shay has already linked, he will initiate her termination immediately, ending any chance Shay has of saving Darla.

It’s only a matter of time…

Either Eric will locate her and finish the mission he’s been programed to fulfill, or the N.I.C. will discover Shay’s secret and finish Eric’s job for him. Eric tracks her back to the facility, and Shay fears it may finally be the end for her and Darla. She can’t bring herself to kill Eric, even if it’s to save her own life. One thing is stronger than even science…

Love.

Excerpt
An Excerpt from Novella Two
E.R.I.C. ALMOST Reprogrammed:

E.R.I.C.
Someone was in the boat with Shay.
I adjusted my vocals to sonar for better hearing under the water and resisted using satellite vision. It was rare I ever received the capabilities and hated when new software downloaded to replace the existing. The lone keys never seemed to receive a satellite signal. It was a dead zone and if the upgrades were satellite based, I’d be without many defenses.
I swam faster. My main concern was the intruder I spotted in the boat with Shay. Was it a scientist?
There was a small island. I climbed out onto it’s shoreline and narrowed my eyes, scanning the boat.  My vision stopped on the unidentified person. I finally downloaded updated software. While satellite images uploaded, I tried to focus the rest of my attention on the unknown intruder. Somehow, my communications programming didn’t register.  I switched to satellite. It was slower than my usual communications, but it knew who the intruder was.

Species: Human; Homo sapiens’ original flesh; soul.
Specified Use: Optional Human Parent
Genetics Match: DNA match: yours.

Mine?
What did Shay just call her?
She called her Mom and then, Darla.
Darla.
I couldn’t swallow.
Was she my human host?
“Mom?”
I remembered her! She used to cradle me in her arms and sing to me. She had the same thick, dark hair that tickled my face and those big, soft eyes…
I reached out—my eyes locking with hers.
My body jolted, electrical currents ran through my veins and I shook, vibrations overtaking me.
You’re being reprogrammed. Please stand by.
“I’m being what?” I could barely get the words out.
Everything blurred. My fingers, still webbed, curled in on themselves and my nails cut into my flesh. I couldn’t stop my teeth from chattering.
Reprogramming nearly complete.
Who was talking to me?
My eyes went into manual override. I tried to look to the left, but it was as if someone controlled my will to do so. My optics scanned without permission and when I tried to shut down satellite use, red lights flashed within my pupils, blinding me. Next, I could feel my limbs reject my thoughts. They belonged to someone else. Who could do this to me?
“What’s happening?” I jolted. Tears streamed down my face. Messages I didn’t want to read appeared before my limited visuals.
Kill the human host.
“I can’t do that!”
Kill the human host.
“But the human host is my mother!”
Sharp jabs of pain shot up my spine.
The voice echoed inside my skull. “I said kill the human host.”
“I won’t do it!”
Electrical currents paralyzed me. I couldn’t speak and my eyesight blackened. Something or someone forced my arms outward into the diver’s position.
“You will kill the human host,” the voice said. “You’ve been reprogrammed.”
My body struggled against me. I dragged my feet along the sand, feeling waves crash into my toes.
“Kill the human host.”
“No.”
“Then I will do it for you,” the voice said.
My body jerked forward, arching and splashing into the sea.

Review: Ash by Shannon Mayer

Ash
Release Date: August 30, 2016
Publisher: HiJinks Publishing
Elemental Book #6
ISBN13: 9781987933185
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

My name is Ash, and I am an Elemental.

As an Ender, it is my place to protect the royal family at all costs. Despite being the best Ender our world has ever beheld, I have failed time and again as the personal sacrifices continue to mount.

Lark has been banished to the desert by her father who is blind to the manipulation he has again fallen prey to. To bring about justice, I must seek out and destroy the one who intentionally wields her powers to bring pain to my people.

Cassava’s death will finally free us from the dark cloud her reign of terror has surrounded us in. This is what I believe to be true and I will seek her out with only one intended outcome.

The reality, however, is much more complicated than my beliefs.

When lies turn to truths, and enemies to allies, can I still find my way back to who I once was? Uncertainty makes me hesitant, but I can not give up.

For justice. For Lark.

No matter the sacrifice.

I was definitely left wondering what all happened to Ash between WINDBURN and ROOTBOUND, so ASH was a welcomed addition to my review schedule. Fans of the Elemental Series might be tempted to read ASH before ROOTBOUND, but you should read the series in order of book #, so make sure to read ASH after ROOTBOUND. I know it's a bit confusing, but there are things that happen in ASH that need the explanations you get from book five.

ASH answered a lot of questions for me, but also added some new ones to the list. She also throws some major curve balls when it comes to Cassava—like you will totally question everything you have thought about her curve balls. I also want to say that I loved the new character addition of Norm in ASH. I see big things coming from him in future books. Rylee would totally love him if she ever met him!

I am glad I got a view of events from Ash's POV and I look forward to seeing him and Lark together again. I'm ready for SPIRIT SOWN.

I gave it 4/5 stars
