Review: Venom in the Veins by Jennifer Estep

Venom in the Veins
Release Date: June 12, 2018
Publisher: Self-Published
ASIN:  B07CQ7XBTK
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

Blood might be thicker than water, but venom is stronger than just about anything …

It was supposed to be a nice, quiet, simple dinner with friends—but nothing is ever nice, quiet, or simple when you’re Gin Blanco, the Spider, notorious assassin and current queen of the Ashland underworld.

This time around, someone seems to be targeting Stuart Mosley, the president of First Trust bank. Lots of people have grudges against Mosley, but the more I investigate, the more Mosley’s problems seem to be connected to some of my own, especially when it comes to the Circle, the evil, shadowy group that is secretly responsible for much of the crime and corruption in Ashland.

But when another blast from my dark and deadly past as the Spider comes to light, I wonder if I’ll be able to survive this dangerous new enemy, who has a burning thirst for revenge that will only be satisfied with one thing: my death.

I have made no secret that the Elemental Assassins series is one of my must read series. I love Gin, I love the world, I love the characters and I love the storylines. Having said that, I am not as excited about the books as I once was. I still love Gin, the world and the characters, but the storylines need some freshness injected into them. It seems like we are just continuing on the Gin vs old enemies/old enemies children bandwagon and I really want something new.

Although it started on the slower side, VENOM IN THE VEINS was filled with the usual action and mystery that is always involved in a Gin Blanco story. As usual her cast of family and friends help her into and out of trouble as Gin kicks the bad guys butts.

When the sad day comes that Jennifer Estep decides to retire Gin Blanco I really hope we will get one final story that shows her happily ever after because she suffers more than anyone and I just want to see her married with babies at the end of all the pain she endures.

The ending of VENOM IN THE VEINS actually gives me some hope that we will get something new in book 18. We finally get some pretty huge news about who the head of the circle is. I don't want to give away spoilers, but I will say that my heart about dropped thinking that the person was actually someone else. I can't NOT read Gin when she is available so bring on more.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Review: Hunt the Moon by Kari Cole

Hunt the Moom
Author: Kari Cole
Release Date: June 11, 2018
Publisher: Carina Press
Mated by Fate Book #1
ASIN:   B07CBNTSMW
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

Who’d think to bring silver bullets to a wedding? When Isabelle “Izzy” Meyers arrives in Montana and discovers her human foster brother is marrying into the local werewolf pack, she wishes she’d brought an arsenal. Werewolves can’t be trusted, and Izzy should know…she is one.

Luke Wyland never planned on becoming an Alpha. He’s still navigating how to protect the pack from the rogue threat that’s been hunting in his territory, claiming his father as one of their victims. Yet the moment Luke lays eyes on Izzy, something primal takes root. Finding a mate who wants nothing to do with him is a complication he doesn’t need, but letting Izzy go isn’t an option.

After a childhood marred by shifter violence, Luke is everything Izzy was raised to hate. So then why does being with him feel so intensely right? With a thinning pack to defend, Luke knows what he has to do: embolden Izzy to unleash her true nature—or risk losing everything.

I very much enjoyed HUNT THE MOON

I really felt for Izzy. Learning about her life and the role that being a shifter played in her past was heartbreaking. It was easy to connect with her and feel her pain as she fought the beliefs and habits that were tortured into her.  Even when she was scared out of her mind she was there for  those that needed her and was willing to put herself in harm's way quite often. I really loved how Luke treated her and stood by her even though she pushed him away. I also really loved meeting and learning about her family.

Luke had that sexy alpha male feel to him, but he wasn't super pushy or overly full of himself. He was protective, yet willing to step back and watch. Their connection was pretty instant, but their romance was slow and turbulent. It was fun watching them navigate and learn each other.

The very first meeting between Izzy and the pack was pretty priceless. I was both horrified and amused at the same time. Definitely entertaining and I found myself entertained during many parts of the book. It wasn't needed, but I would have actually loved a prequel to HUNT THE MOON showing us how Freddie met and fell in love with Rissa. It would have been a nice intro to the Mated by Fate world and it's characters. Especially considering the role some of the pack members plays in HUNT THE MOON.

I plan to read more.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Review: Wild Hunger by Suzanne Wright

Wild Hunger
Release Date: May 29, 2018
Publisher: Montlake Romance
ISBN: 1503902161
ISBN13: 9781503902169
Genre: Paranormal Romance

When half–wolf shifter Frankie Newman receives an e-mail from a family member she didn’t know existed, a secret is revealed: as a child, Frankie witnessed her father killing her mother…and then himself. Frankie was torn from her pack by her mother’s human relatives, and the trauma was erased from her memory. Realizing that she’s been lied to her entire life, she’s never felt more alone. Until she catches the scent of an old friend—warmly familiar and intoxicating.

Trick Hardy, enforcer of the Phoenix Pack, can sense the rush of mutual attraction when he sees Frankie again. He knows immediately that she’s his true mate. But he also knows that, given her fragile state, he needs to tread with care—no matter how fierce his surging desires.

As aroused as Frankie is by Trick’s darkly dominant air and simmering desire, her priority right now is her past—not her future, no matter how tempting. But as more secrets emerge and Frankie’s life is threatened, Trick must do everything he can to keep her close and safe. After all, it’s their destiny.

Both the Phoenix Pack and Mercury Pack series continue to be must reads for me. In fact, there hasn't been a series from Suzanne Wright that I didn't fall in love with.

Trick is just like all the other alpha males in the pack. Stubborn, dominant, set in his ways, but also really sweet and willing to take a step back when its called for. I found his willingness to give Frankie time to figure things out quite refreshing. Don't get me wrong, he was there for every moment, but he didn't push her for anything she wasn't ready for.  Frankie fit right in with the other woman of the Phoenix Pack. I loved her snark, her interactions with Trey's mom, and her determination at every step of the book. Together they made a really cute, strong couple and worked really well together.

I enjoyed the mystery of WILD HUNGER. I had some clues about what was going on after a bit, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the big reveal. We also get the big action scene at the end that we're used to with this series, but it came on multiple fronts which was a nice surprise.

If you are new to either this or the Mercury Pack series, make sure you read them in release order. They compliment each other perfectly and you can get your fix quicker by reading both. There are only a few Phoenix Pack members left to find their mates, but I will be reading about them as soon as I am able to get my hands on them.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Cover Reveal: Homecoming by Jennifer Allis Provost

Homecoming
Gallowglass #3
Amazon
Who wields the power behind the Wild Court?

After months of dealing with gods and monsters in New York, Karina and Robert return to their cottage in Scotland. Chris makes the move as well to start fresh with his girlfriend, Anya—but when they arrive Anya isn’t there. He tracks her down at the pub where her mother, Beira, works, and finds out that Beria’s been holding a grudge against his family for the past few hundred years. Since Beira’s the Cailleach Bheur— the Celtic Queen of Winter—her grudges are a rather big deal.

While Chris deals with Beira, Karina and Robert learn that when Robert was freed from the Minster’s Pine Karina inadvertently left a portal to Elphame open. Now Doon Hill is covered in fairies who are organizing themselves into a new court free of Seelie rule, akin to the Wild Fae of old. What’s worse, Karina’s long-lost uncle appears to be organizing this new court.

Karina closes the door to Elphame, but that only angers the unseen powers behind the fledgling Wild Court, forcing her and Robert to forge alliances with those who’d been their enemies not so long ago. Who can Karina and her gallowglass trust, and who is only out to deceive them?

DJ SHAW

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1977, DJ Shaw was 17 before she was able to see most of the United States. When she was 17, she decided to join the fair, traveling with them to Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Once the fair arrived in Lake Charles, DJ had decided it was time to go home, that she had had enough of traveling with the fair. She much rather preferred to sit around writing, or even telling, the lives of the people who lived in her head. She had been good at story-telling from the time she was about ten, when she scared herself so bad with her story of the Boogey-man that she couldn’t move off her bed. Her siblings would come to her for their scare fix, because they knew she could come up with something on the spot.
Having found what she loved to do at an early age, she continued to write down her stories and any poetry that came into her head. She had stacks upon stacks of notebooks filled with her work. Her love of horror movies made her stories that much more chilling.
When she’s not writing, she’s listening to music, supporting her favorite adopted brother and his band “Traveler in Pain”, playing with her five children, spending time with her husband of seven years or watching horror movies in the middle of the night just for the scare factor.

GRACE WHITE

Grace White is the paranormal pseudonym of romance writer, L A Cotton.
She resides in the UK with her family, and lives for binge watching series on her Firestick, losing herself in a good book, and reliving her younger days through trashy teenage movies … not necessarily in that order.

PEPPER MCGRAW

Pepper McGraw wishes she were a shifter, but since she wasn’t lucky enough to be born that way, she chooses to write about them instead. She’s an advocate of animal rescue and supports local shelters and Trap-Neuter-Release programs for feral cats. She has had the supreme honor of winning occasional head butts and meows from the local ferals in her neighborhood and even of convincing a few to come inside and adopt her as their own.

A.B. BLOOM

A book hoarder and coffee addict by heart Anna Bloom loves to write extraordinary stories about real love. Based south of London with her husband, three children and a dog with a beard, Anna likes to connect with readers, fan girl over her favourite authors and binge watch Supernatural while drinking lots of wine.

KAT PARRISH

Kat Parrish is a former reporter who prefers making things up! An Army brat, her motto is “Have passport, will travel.” She has lived in seven states and two foreign countries and would love to celebrate her 100th birthday with a trip into space. She lives in the Pacific Northwest near a haunted cemetery.
