Guest Blog + Giveaway: Frenchman Street by Suzanne Johnson (@Suzanne_Johnson)

UFI welcomes Author Suzanne Johnson. Thanks for Joining us!!

 Featured Creaturess

Suzanne Johnson

I spent the earlier books in the Sentinels of New Orleans series introducing the major preternatural species—wizards, elves, faeries, vampires, shifters, etc.—so in FRENCHMAN STREET I was able to delve into some other creatures that live in this vast multiverse. Here are a few, and the twists I took on the myths…

DRAGONS

Yes, there be dragons living in the mountains in the northern reaches of the Land of Elfheim. Those who choose to do so are companions (not pets) of the elves, and can communicate mentally with them…when they choose to do so. In this book, we meet two dragons, Melanwahr and Pentewyn. Mel has an unfortunate run-in with some unsuspecting and very freaked-out humans; Pen develops some digestive issues after over-indulging on some lab rats. Apparently, dragon gas is a real thing. A real bad thing. Oh, and dragons can be as small as a bird or as big as a jumbo jet…in a matter of seconds. Strange creatures, dragons. They’re very inquisitive and a bit high-strung. Then again, they have to deal with elves all the time, so who can blame them?

UNICORNS

Unicorns can be found in the Kingdom of Faerie, and they are like big, horned, ill-tempered carrier pigeons. Of course, if I had to deal with faeries all day long, I’d be ill-tempered too. Faeries are, well, crazy. And powerful. It’s a scary combination. Then set them on an ill-tempered beast with a big, sharp horn and add in the fact that faeries can glamour themselves to look like whoever they want and...THAT is how you end up with a faux George Clooney riding a unicorn in a Mardi Gras parade. Just in case you were wondering.

GUARD DOGS
There is a Royal Canine Corps in Elfheim, and they are important to the elves’ security. One might expect a big bruiser like a Rottie or Pitt, but no. The RCC is made up of Welsh Pembroke Corgis. Corgis are usually assigned to guard (or be a “companion” of) one person, and in this book, you’ll meet Gruffydd, aka Gruff, who is given to heroine DJ (a wizard) by her in-name-only bondmate Rand (an elf). Gruff is supposed to be a spy…or maybe he becomes a double agent..or maybe, as a nine-month-old corgi, he’s just an enthusiastic puppy. Only time will tell. Strange creatures, elven corgis. Why Corgis? Well, other than being cool dogs for a royal (ask Queen Elizabeth), it was a natural choice for my elves, who speak a form of Welsh themselves, although they will arrogantly tell you it was their language long before Wales existed. Gruff speaks both Welsh and English, since he was trained, we suspect, to be given to DJ from the time he was a wee pup. Is Gruff good for DJ, or is he bad? Only time will tell.

MERFOLK

We’ve had a major merman character, Rene Delachaise, since book two of the series, but in this book we meet more of Rene’s family…and there are a lot of them. The water species in this series are specialized shifters—born, not made (werewolves and other weres are made). In the case of the Delachaise family, they are of Cajun descent, meaning they started out in France, settled in the Maritime provinces of Canada in the 1600s as Acadians, and then were driven out of Canada in 1713 by the Big Bad Brits. Many ended up in the then-French colony of Louisiana. “Cajun” is a bastardization of “Acadian.” Anyway, the Delachaise family is, ironically, involved in commercial fishing in South Louisiana, so as a shrimp boat captain, Rene is a wealthy business owner in his own right…and he does some lucrative side deals. Merfolk can mainstream with humans, can half-shift into classic mermaid or merman form, or fully shift into some aquatic species. The Delachaise brothers (and sisters and aunts and cousins) turn into either freshwater or saltwater dolphins—whichever is required. Like other shifters, the merfolk tend to all be alphas. They’re adventurous and bold, and don’t hesitate to brawl their way out of any situation. They also don’t like felines—Rene says cats think merfolk are sushi. (And don’t believe the photo; Rene is being played by Kit Harington in the movie, as soon as Kit can get the Cajun accent down.)

So…which featured creature would you most enjoy meeting in a dark alley late at night?

Frenchman Street
Sentinels of New Orleans #6
Amazon
The uneasy truce between the preternatural species of New Orleans has shattered, with wizards and elves, shifters and vampires—not to mention the historical undead—struggling for ultimate control of the city, including the humans who still think they’re atop the food chain.<

They aren’t, however—and the Summer Prince of Faerie wants them to know it.

Stuck in the middle? One unemployed wizard sentinel. For DJ Jaco, war makes for strange bedfellows as she finally embraces her wizard-elven heritage and strikes a deal with the devil so she and her ragtag band of allies can return to defend her hometown. After all, when the undead French pirate Jean Lafitte has been hired by the mayor as a consultant, things could go horribly wrong.

War is coming to New Orleans just in time for Mardi Gras, with the elves and wizards lined up on opposite sides, the shifters without a leader, the vampires promising loyalty to the highest bidder, and the soul of the Crescent City resting on the outcome of the civil war going on in Faerie between the rival princes of summer and winter.

Mardi Gras Day is approaching fast, the much-anticipated new Krewe of Enyo is not what it seems, and the line between friends and enemies grows thin as DJ tries to stave off open warfare between faeries on the St. Charles Avenue parade route.

Laissez les bons temps rouler…but be careful, or the good times might roll too close for comfort.
 Excerpt:

I turned to glare at the unicorn. It was hanging around for some reason.
“Can you talk? If not, what are you waiting for?” I made a shooing motion. “Go home to your whack-job master.”
Because we needed to find out how it got to our remote beach in the Beyond.
“I’ll find a rope—maybe we can make a halter,” Rene said, walking toward the house.
Jean also seemed to have had his fill of unicorn wrangling. “Bah. I shall depart for Old Orleans, Drusilla. There are people with whom I must discuss matters of import, and perhaps I might discover the truth about Christof.”
Fine. Leave me with the merman and the unicorn.
He turned and walked into the transport, disappearing in seconds. He hadn’t removed his boots, but he had held his pistol out of the water. The pirate had his priorities straight.
    “Here is my message.”
I whirled to look at the unicorn, who was now doing his best Mr. Ed impression.
“I knew it.” That freaking unicorn could talk; he’d been waiting to get me alone.
I held up the elven staff, and the unicorn had the good sense to back up a couple of steps. I slipped my left hand into my jeans pocket, fingering a couple of potions I’d cooked up in this rustic paradise using a generator-powered hot plate and my own blood. My physical magic wouldn’t work outside the human world, but my potions and charms were fine. The staff worked everywhere.
“Okay, start talking, horse.”
The unicorn managed to look offended. “Here is my message,” he repeated. “His Royal Majesty Florian will be crowned King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond in two weeks. You are—”
“Wait.” I shook the staff at him, and sparks flew out its tip. “What do you mean, ‘King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond’?”
What in the name of Merlin was that madman up to?
The unicorn tossed his head and looked even grumpier. “Here is my message,” he repeated for the third time. “His Royal Majesty Florian will be crowned King of Faerie and of All Species of Earth and Beyond in two weeks. You are invited to attend and pledge fealty at his coronation in New Orleans at the apex of the celebration the humans call Mardi Gras. Should you die before the appointed time, this invitation may be considered null and void.”
And with that, the unicorn turned, took a big, steaming dump on the sand near my feet, and made to trot back down the beach from whence he came. I flipped the lid off one of the charms in my pocket, chased him down the beach, and tossed it on him. I only hit his tail, which, considering it was a freezing charm, only made said tail freeze at a ninety-degree angle.
“Stop, unicorn, or I’ll toast your rump like a potroast!” I yelled, aiming the staff. I sent a warning zap of fire onto his rump. My aim had improved a lot in months since I’d blown up my own SUV and burned down half of Six Flags New Orleans. I’d had lots of time to practice.
Unfortunately, the shot only made the unicorn fly into a gallop. I had no choice but to run after him and hope I could keep him in sight by moonlight.

Review: A Tracker's Tale by Karen Avizur

A Tracker's Tale
Release Date: March 1, 2018
Publisher: Self-Published
Trackers Book #1
ASIN:   B079NCC19B
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Author

Welcome to the strange and perilous world of Katherine Colebrook: FBI special agent, Los Angeles… Trackers Division.

In Katherine’s world, werewolves, vampires, pĂșcas, and other parasapien species – forced for centuries by human fear and prejudice to live at the fringes of society – have finally come out of hiding to demand their rightful place alongside us. It’s a fragile co-existence, fraught with mutual distrust: a new social contract for which the rules are still evolving. And when those rules break down – usually when a parasapien begins preying on humans – that’s when the Trackers step in. It’s their job to hunt them down and stop them by any means necessary.

Within this elite unit, Katherine Colebrook is one of the best. Her psychic abilities made her a natural for the Trackers Division, allowing her to move between the parasapien and human worlds in ways that no other agent could. But Katherine’s calling hasn’t come without struggle and losses along the way. As a single mother, she must contend with her teenage daughter, Alexandra, who not only shares Katherine’s psychic abilities, but seems determined to follow the same dangerous path as her mother.

And so, when Katherine’s latest assignment threatens to bring that danger too close home, she finds herself faced with the toughest challenge of her career: Can she protect her daughter’s life, while battling a ruthless adversary who’ll stop at nothing to destroy her?

A TRACKER'S TALE was one of those stories that I didn't expect much of going into, but quickly grabbed my attention and I wished I had more to read when it was over.

I really enjoyed Katherine. She was hilariously bad-ass with a fantastic personality. Her being a mom brought another interesting factor to the story. Her daughter is pretty bad-ass on her own and I enjoyed getting a few parts of the story from her POV. They had a pretty great bond and I look forward to seeing them work together in future books. Katherine's partner was easy to like. They are new to each other, but their personalities seem to mesh well and they worked well together. Their introduction to each other was pretty entertaining.

The plot was balanced nicely between Katherine's everyday happenings and the mystery of the storyline. I enjoyed the investigation just as much as seeing Katherine's struggles on the home front. You really get a feel for just how awesome Katherine is when she confronts the bad guy at the end of A TRACKER'S TALE. They had no clue what they were getting into when they messed with her family and watching her put them in their place was truly something else. I'm sure they will clash again in the future and I honestly can't wait for that to happen. I'm positive that it will be highly entertaining.

A TRACKER'S TALE was a great story with great characters that left me wanting more. I will add book two to my wishlist as soon as I see it up on Goodreads. Fingers crossed that it won't be too long until it comes out.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Review: Being Alpha by Aileen Erin (@InkyTheMonster)

Being Alpha
Author: Aileen Erin
Release Date: July 17, 2018
Publisher: Ink Monster
Alpha Girl Book #7
ASIN:   B01MRBOB64
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

For the first time since Tessa met Dastien, life is quiet. The evil witch, Luciana, is six glorious feet under, St. Ailbe's is closed due to human trespassers, and people are finally getting used to the fact that supernaturals exist in the world. It seems like the perfect time for a honeymoon.

After traveling to Dastien's house in Provence, clubbing in Paris, and attending Meredith and Donovan's Full Moon Ceremony in Ireland, Tessa and Dastien head to the Caribbean. Their trip is turning out to be the honeymoon that fantasies are made of-sunset cruises, long walks on the beach, and every romantic cliché you can imagine. Tessa couldn't be happier. Except that Tessa's visions are on the fritz. She hopes that means that nothing is brewing. That everything is quiet because all is well. But Tessa's never been one to assume anything.

When she's magically attacked and nearly dies, Tessa knows she can't ignore the signs anymore. Something huge is going on. As much as she doesn't want to call an end to their six-week honeymoon, it's time to head back to Texas.

Whoever messed with Tessa is in for a rude awakening. Because if there's one thing fighting rogue witches and werewolves has taught her, it's how to be Alpha.

It was great to see Tessa and Dastien again, but the storyline in BEING ALPHA wasn't as exciting as early books in the Alpha Girl series.

I didn't love BEING ALPHA, but I didn't hate it. I enjoyed getting to see Tessa and Dastien in action again. I enjoyed getting to see most of my favorite secondary characters, and I also enjoyed seeing some of them find peace with everything that has happened to them.

All I could think about after finishing BEING ALPHA was 'what was the point of making this book?'. They already beat the demons. Tess and and Dastien were already married and presumably living HEA. Most of the the other characters were happy, on the way to being happy or we didn't really think about them and their HEA. BEING ALPHA just didn't see that necessary when all was said and done.

I am pretty sure that BEING ALPHA is the last in the series. I enjoyed following the stories of everyone involved and I am happy with the conclusions of everything.

I gave it 3/5 stars

In the war against the Forces of Darkness, the Royals are losing. Princess Ivy is determined to end this centuries-long conflict once and for all, so her new battle partner must succeed where the others failed. Prince Zach’s unparalleled skill with a sword, enhanced by Ivy’s magic Kiss, should make them an unstoppable pair—but try convincing Zach of that.

Prince Zach has spent his life preparing for battle, but he would rather be branded a heretic than use his lips as nothing more than a way to transfer magic. A kiss is a symbol of love, and love is the most powerful weapon they have—but try convincing Ivy of that.

With the fate of their world on the line, the battlefield has become a testing ground, and only one of them can be right. Falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan—but try convincing their hearts of that.

Going into KISS OF THE ROYAL I thought it was going to be a little cheesy, but wanted to give it a shot anyways. It started out a little iffy, but it didn't take me long to get into the story.

Princess Ivy was likable. I enjoyed being in her head as she battled her own thoughts and *gasp* feelings. Prince Zach was mysterious and a bit guarded at first. I didn't always know what he was thinking, but I quickly started to trust that he did everything with his whole heart. It was interesting to watch both Zach and Ivy navigate their situation with their different beliefs raging against each other.

Even though I enjoyed it, I was a tad bit disappointed when I finished reading KISS OF THE ROYAL. I would have loved to see some more depth involved in the big battle. There was a lot of lead-up to it, but I thought it went way too fast. On top of that, I kinda wanted to know more. I wanted to see the struggles that Ivy and Zach went through once the battle was over and before the end. I want to see what their future looks like, I want to see it all.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Promo + Giveaway: Melissa's Quest by Blair Drake (@BlairDrakeBooks)

Melissa's Quest
Finding Magic
Amazon
Lost and bewildered after being unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend, seventeen-year-old Melissa wants nothing more than to curl up with her pain. But then she’s summoned by the headmaster of Gray Cliffs Academy and finds herself on the roof in the middle of a wild and tumultuous storm. Before she realizes what is happening, a vicious wind sends her flying through the darkness and she lands in the frozen north. It is then she discovers the true meaning of feeling lost. Though full of mystery and magic, there is something sinister about this strange new world…

All Melissa wants is to return home, but first she must learn the rules of this strange new reality and how they will help her in her quest before it’s too late and she’s stuck in this place forever…
 Excerpt:

She stared at it for a long moment, then ran her fingers over the bright ring to see if it would change. Maybe a genie would appear to help her out, but nothing happened. It was pretty but useless. She glared around her and yelled, “Pretty doesn’t cut it, guys. What am I supposed to do with this thing?”
A voice whispered through her head, “You know what to do with it.”
She froze, her breath caught her in her throat. “Who said that?” She spun around, but no one was here. “Show yourself!”
Nothing happened.
“Don’t go crazy on me now, Melissa,” she said to herself. She bowed her head and struggled to get her thoughts together. The school taught meditation classes to help deal with the stress of exams and being away from their families—or the stress of going home to families.
She didn’t have much of a family life, but she didn’t let anyone know that. She never let anyone know how her quest for a happy home life bothered her. Since Luke moved on without her, she’d been more than lost...and more aloof. The two of them had been an item, and for her, he’d been the only one. Except she hadn’t heard from him since his graduation. It was horrible.
Every day she kept expecting to see him, expecting to hear from him.
And never did.
That abandonment had been complete, surgically quick, and without explanation. Even now she felt the loss whispering through her soul. If he was out there, would he know what happened to her? Would he care? So many things in her life she wished she could change. He was the one bright light that kept her going, and she had no idea what she did to make him cut her out of his life like that—to hate her so much.
Despite Luke’s silent departure, she loved being at the school—knowing she belonged to something special, that she made it into something so much more than she thought she deserved, that an exciting future was out there for her.
And none of that helped her right now. She sat with a thud. And pulled her knees to her chest, burrowing her face in her arms. She wouldn’t last much longer. Not in these temperatures.
Still, she was alive and that surprised her. This cold was brutal. She could still feel her fingers and her toes. As she pondered that, she wondered, as cold as she was… she wasn’t numb. Hypothermia hadn’t set in. She wasn’t dying… at least not yet.
Hearing a tiny scratching sound beside her, she leaned over and scooped away some of the snow. A small arctic mouse stared at her, its nose twitching as if figuring out what she was.
With a delighted gasp, she whispered, “Hey, little one. Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.”
In an odd movement, it stretched up, its huge eyes studying her.
She chuckled, afraid to move too fast and scare it off. As it was the only animal she’d seen, and it was alive, she welcomed his presence.
He wasn’t terrified of her and clambered over the snow to see her closer.
She lowered her hand to the side so he could sniff her. Her smile widened at the sight of his whiskers going crazy, but the mouse kept getting closer.
“Are you hungry?” she asked instinctively. Yet, she didn’t think she had any food in her pockets. She turned her pockets out, looking for something, but found nothing edible, not even a mouse-size snack.
Terrified of scaring the little one away, she continued to talk to him in a low, crooning voice. She’d never get this close to a mouse in her world. She was surprised to see this guy in such an inhospitable place as this. “How do you survive, buddy?”
The little she knew about mice said they burrowed under the snow all winter. With her luck, she’d sat on his tunnels and collapsed them.
The mouse stretched out a paw and placed it on her finger. She caught her breath and waited.
A second paw landed beside the first. She grinned when the mouse hopped up on her hand, totally unconcerned she might be a danger to him.
Too bad no one witnessed this. She was too scared to pull out her cell phone for a quick photo in case she disturbed the little guy.
“I’m going to call you Winter,” she whispered.
The mouse didn’t seem to mind. He sniffed her jacket, then wandered up her arm.
She stared, transfixed. For all the shittiness of her situation, this little guy was a light in her otherwise dark world.
Still, if the mouse was here, maybe someone else was here too. But, if she yelled right now, the mouse might take off.
She closed her eyes and whispered, “Anyone there?”
And got the shock of her life.
A voice inside her head said, “I’ve always been here.”
She struggled to recognize the voice. She thought the speaker was male, but the words were distorted and distant, so she couldn’t be sure. She kept an eye on the mouse sitting on her sleeve. He worked his way up to her shoulder, his nose and whiskers wrinkled at every step. She had to admit she wondered if the mouse had talked. “Who are you?”
“Somebody who loves you very much.” The voice spoke inside her head again.
Her mind struggled to identify the speaker who had no trouble making such a bald-faced lie. With the cold her thoughts were sluggish, her mind fogging up. Surely that voice was her imagination. No one cared about her—she wasn’t sure anyone ever had. “Can you get me out of here?” she asked hopefully. “Help me go home?”
Silence was her answer.
She frowned. “Is this a trick?”
The voice was sad, heavy. “No, it’s not a trick. I’m sorry to see you so distrusting.”
“How can I not be? Look where I am. I have no idea how this came to pass or who did this to me.” She shook her head, momentarily forgetting about the mouse. “Am I really here, in the middle of some kind of winter wonderland, all alone?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t even have a proper coat for this weather. Am I going to die here?” Melissa asked, wiping the tears burning the corners of her eyes. “Can’t you help me?”
“I’m not even supposed to be talking to you.”
“Why are you then?” she asked in frustration, more tears burning, clogging her throat. “It’s despicable to torture me like this.”
“I tried to talk to you many times, but a wall was always between us. Right now the wall is thin, like crepe paper,” the voice said in exasperation. “So I tried again. This time I got through.”
“Can you tell me who you are?”
The voice paused, then said in a low tone, “No, I can’t.”
“Then what can you tell me?” she asked, trying not to cry. But the wind and cold were stealing her spirit. Until she caught a movement out of the corner of her eye. The mouse had crawled up to her shoulder, where it settled down in the crook of her neck. She couldn’t see it tucked in there, but she could feel it. Her spirit warmed from the inside, along with her heart.
“I’m allowed to tell you that you have to get back on your own. Time is running out. A clock started ticking from the moment you landed. Your life force is also disappearing.”
Her head jerked up at that. “What do you mean, my life force? Like my health? Do I have a disease? Have I been shot or something? What are you talking about?”
“Your talisman.”
“Talisman? Is that what this is? I wondered. It’s my school pin but…different. Somehow it transformed on whatever weird trip I took to this place,” she said, slowly trying to figure this out. She stared at the talisman in her hand. “Is that what the ring of lights on the outside means?”
“Yes. When those run out, you will not have enough energy to get back again.”
“So it is possible to get back again?” Her mind locked on to the one thing she could handle.
“Yes, definitely. That’s what this is all about. You’re on a quest to learn what you can do, what talents you might have, but you have to start moving fast.”
Instantly, she scrambled to her feet, only to freeze at the startled squeak from her new friend. She reached up a hand to stroke the mouse gently, amazed it was still here with her. It was a least used to the terrain whereas she was starting to shake violently as the wind whipped her face and body. Hunched against the cold, and trying to move carefully, she took several steps forward. Her mind caught on two words. Quest? Talents? “I’m happy to move. Just tell me where to go.”
“I can’t.”
Frustrated and angry, and terrified she would lose the voice in her head, she rushed to say, “Can you tell me whether to go up or down?”
“I have to go now. I’ll try to contact you later.”
“Wait,” Melissa cried out, “Can you give me a hint? Something? I’ll freeze to death soon.” Even as the words leave her mouth, her teeth start to chatter.
Just as the voice disappeared from her mind, it let out a sigh and whispered, “Think of a portal.” And then the voice was gone.
