Truth burns.Unemployment, despair, anger—visible and invisible unrest feed the undercurrent of Detroit’s unease. A city increasingly invaded by phantoms now faces a malevolent force that further stokes fear and chaos throughout the city.Anya Kalinczyk spends her days as an arson investigator with the Detroit Fire Department, and her nights pursuing malicious spirits with a team of eccentric ghost hunters. Anya—who is the rarest type of psychic medium, a Lantern—suspects a supernatural arsonist is setting blazes to summon a fiery ancient entity that will leave the city in cinders. By Devil’s Night, the spell will be complete, unless Anya—with the help of her salamander familiar and the paranormal investigating team—can stop it.Anya’s accustomed to danger and believes herself inured to loneliness and loss. But this time she’s risking everything: her city, her soul, and a man who sees and accepts her for everything she is. Keeping all three safe will be the biggest challenge she’s ever faced.

This book had such mixed reviews it took me almost a year to finally read it. Ive read Laura's other series under the name of Alayna Williams and really enjoyed it, I also saw a review of this series from a reviewer I trust the opinion of and finally decided to give it a try. Laura has a wonderful way of bringing unique situations to her books, her writing style is also very engaging.  Anya was easy to like and easy to follow, she is very troubled but is also really strong and independent. Sparky Anya's familiar was awesome, his personality shines through the pages and I always looked forward to what he would do next.  I wasn't crazy about the love interests, I especially didn't understand the draw to Drake besides the fact that he was a lantern. EMBERS was a neat read with great supporting characters and situations you haven't likely read before so I would recommend you give it a try.

I gave it 4/5 Stars

  2. This sounds like an interesting book. I like the idea that Anya is an Arson investigator, something a tough different from the regular police or PI, that you normally see. Added to my list to check out and hopefully read.
