Interview + Giveaway: Immortal Descent by Carolyn M. Walker

UFI welcomes Author Carolyn M. Walker. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I am obsessed with quotes! I suppose as a writer, that might not be too much of a shock. Regardless, I love them so much I have different ones set up around my home office, work office, other parts of the house—just everywhere. I also have several books on quotes and I can be found throwing a quote at someone in the middle of a conversation. One of my favorite quotes is by Walt Disney: “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I enjoy swimming,  reading, or binge watching a show on Netflix. I also love to travel when possible and during the holidays, I recipe scrapbook!

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I love developing an outline for what the story will be. I also love polishing it off once I’ve finished the heavy lifting!

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I have to stay focused so when I’m in serious writing mode, I stay away from the internet and I turn on some music (instrumental) to keep me in the zone.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I like Kim Harrison, Neil Gaiman, Charlaine Harris, Nora Roberts, Laurell K. Hamilton, Karen Marie Moning, Susan Ee, Edgar Allen Poe, and Anne Rice, to name a few! I have so many!

How would you pitch IMMORTAL DESCENT to someone who has not heard of it before?

If you like the grit of comic book villains, the mysteries of mythology, and deeply rooted family secrets, then you’ll like Immortal Descent! It’s the story of a young man who is thrust into a dark world that’s existed thousands of years, right beneath everyone’s noses. But his arrival is about to change everything.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that IMMORTAL DESCENT is set in?

The world of Immortal Descent is mysterious. In many ways its much like the world we live in today, only heavier with secret that have been hidden with the passage of time. The man character Ethan West quickly enters this dark world built up of secrets—where creatures known as Lorns exist, hiding in plain sight among people. The narrative also travels through time to learn some of the other characters’ stories and how they came to be who they are now. With each turn, we see a much darker side to the world painted by loss, betrayal, and sacrifices. This is the heart of what Immortal Descent explores.

Do you have a favorite scene in IMMORTAL DESCENT?

I do! I love that first scene after Ethan realizes that he has become a Lorn. He experiences a myriad of emotions that range from shock, to awe, to a sense of loss. He’s surprised by how his body has changed both physically and mentally. All of it is fantastic until he catches a glimpse of himself in a mirror and realizes his green eyes (a deep bottle green just like his late mother’s) have changed to a bleak gray. It was in the moment that Ethan first realizes he’s reached a point of no return; he had to see it for himself to understand it in that moment. From then on, an internal struggle begins for him.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I love all my characters, but I have to say that Tristan Lowell was probably both my favorite and the hardest to write about! He is a villain, a complete Machiavellian character in every way. With Tristan, I really had to challenge myself as an author. I knew I wanted to create a very dark character, yet I wanted him to somehow be endearing. He’s sinister to be sure, but he’s also refined, eccentric, and humorous. Plus he’s ridiculously attractive. This complexity to Tristan fascinated me and there was a lot of cringing and gasping as I wrote him in. But I look forward to shedding more light on him in the second book because there so much more to see there!

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Well, I am now working on the second installment in the Immortal Series, Immortal Delirium so readers can expect to see more coming soon. I’m also working on a couple other projects. I have a hometown mystery (not paranormal) currently underway and a young adult conspiracy thriller in the works! I’m super excited to share these with readers in the near future!

Deep in the caves of rural Western Germany, the truth about immortality has remained a secret for centuries, but now that secret is about to break free...

Ethan West knows what it means to be different. With a haunted past and a strange sixth sense he sometimes can’t control, Ethan’s in search of a better future. Instead, he’s brutally attacked. Narrowly saved by the beautiful and mysterious Rue, Ethan quickly learns the world is darker and more bizarre than he had ever imagined. And sparing his life comes with a price: being reborn immortal. Now, a dark faction of ancient, cursed immortal beings known as Lorns are after him. And they want his rare, newly awakened soul.

Descended from the mythological Nephilim, Lorns are bound by either the divine force of order or the mortal force of chaos. Ethan is a rarity, bound by neither, yet he is ruled by both. Now, wielding an ancient and volatile power, Rue and her Alliance work to keep Ethan from spiraling out of control. At the heart of a terrifying underground war between Lorns, Ethan becomes the target of one side and a savior to the other. Amid everything, Ethan struggles to understand his own purpose and power—an ordeal that tests his loyalties, beliefs, and sanity in ways unimaginable. And the greatest danger is yet to come.
Excerpt #2:

Now or never.
Using all the strength she still had within her, Victoria reared back and rammed her shoulder into Tristan’s chest, shoving him back off the small bed. As he fell back, she leapt up, her weak but determined feet hitting the cold stone ground. Stumbling forward, Victoria almost fell but corrected herself and managed to make it to the door, which she hastily unbolted, and ran out.
Tristan stood and dusted off the pant legs of his slacks then gave a sigh. “What a naughty little girl,” he said and strolled out the door after her.
Victoria was frantic as she ran down one corridor then another before reaching a short flight of stairs. She hurried up them two at a time until she found herself in another darkened room. She dashed through the space, searching for the exit. At last, she saw a thin slip of light beneath the doorway at the end of another hall. She increased her speed, pushing through it and out into the bright, hot light of late day. Spread out before her was the expanse of golden wheat fields as far as the eye could see. She looked around and around but only saw fields for miles in every direction.
“Where am I?” she said to herself, realizing she was no longer in Switzerland.
“I’ve just acquired this place,” Tristan said, standing back in the doorway to the desolate, oversized farm house. “Quite a find. It came ‘as is,’ and I can’t wait to improve it.”
Victoria spun around, taking in the whole of the house and the land surrounding it. “Why have you taken me here? And what did you do to me?” she asked again.
“As I’ve said before, you belong to me now. So, you go where I deem you fit to be.”
“No,” she retorted.
“Yes,” Tristan countered. “Soon, you will transition into my faithful Lorn, and in time, you will see everything in a much clearer light.”
