Guest Blog + Giveaway: Embracing the Demon by Beth Woodward ( @beththewoodward )

UFI welcomes Author Beth Woodward. Thanks for Joining us!!

One morning you wake up. The birds are singing, the sun is shining, everything is wonderful…and then some strange guy comes into the bookstore where you work and tells you that you’re half demon. That’s pretty much what happens to my protagonist, Dale, in The Demon Within.

So what do you do?

I mean, you could scream or cry or go see a therapist (who will probably have you committed). But, this being 2018, I think there’s only one correct answer: you go home and built a Spotify playlist.

And thus you have the “So I’m a demon…now what?” playlist.

1) AC/DC, “Highway to Hell.”

I mean, this is kind of a gimmie, right? So what that you don’t actually know whether demons come from Hell. Neither do any of the other demons! But that doesn’t prevent them from grooving out to the music that honors their “heritage.” Also, it’s loud enough to block all those thoughts in your head who are screaming at you that you may just be evil now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l482T0yNkeo

2) Hall & Oates, “Maneater.”

Thankfully for you, none of the demons in my world are cannibals (that we know of). But in those initial hours after finding out, you may start to wonder whether Hall & Oates seminal tune and the sixth-best karaoke song in existence will start to sound a little more literal to you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRYFKcMa_Ek

3) Michael Jackson, “Smooth Criminal.”

…Or maybe new demon-you will end up doing something horrible, like murdering your poor girlfriend (who is, naturally, named Annie) in a fit of rage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_D3VFfhvs4

4) Bobby Darin, “Mack the Knife.”

…Or maybe you’ll just start robbing and killing people because you think it’s fun, like ol’ Mack the Knife. And honestly, it must be kind of fun, otherwise Bobby Darin wouldn’t sound so peppy when he’s singing about Mack, amiright?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiGFZUnJgqU

5) Guns n’ Roses, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.”

Oh no. There will be no knocking on Heaven’s door for you…and even if you were to knock, you’d be rejected…because you’re a demon! When it comes to Heaven, you’re like that solicitor who knocks on the door at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Unless you come bearing Girl Scout cookies, you’d better get the hell away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=301w_flI0oI

6) Radiohead, “Creep.”

By this time, you’re probably feeling pretty down on yourself. But don’t worry—you’ve got Radiohead’s “Creep” to keep you company, the seminal song of angst and self-loathing. You will play this on repeat for a while, because you are (in your mind) both a creep and a weirdo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFkzRNyygfk

7) Charlie Daniels Band, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

But maybe, after much wallowing, you’ll start to think about the bright side of being a demon. Like for example, we all know that the best part of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” was the hip backup band of demons that the devil summoned to accompany his fiddle-playing. They had a good beat, and you could dance to them. Johnny schmonny! #thedemonswererobbed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNSljt0i3TI

8) Five for Fighting, “Superman (It’s not easy).”

Being half-demon comes with a few perks. Like immortality. And SUPERPOWERS! Hey, maybe it isn’t easy to be you, but buck up: it’s a lot easier when you can fly, walk through walls, free time, or—like Dale—can control minds. Hmmm, that one would definitely be interesting…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRz4FY0ZcwI

9) Bobby Pickett, “Monster Mash.”

Being a “monster” is in the eye of the beholder. And maybe it’s easier to be a monster (or a demon) when you have your whole tribe around you, doing the Transylvania Twist. Dale’s had a few problems with that one, being a loner who spent 10 years on the run. But by the time we get to Embracing the Demon, Dale is well aware of her demon heritage. So maybe it’s time she finds a few like-minded monsters to mash with. (Also, this video is worth your time just to check out the crazy facial expressions!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNuVifA7DSU

10) The Rolling Stones, “Sympathy for the Devil”

Of course, this is the song that would close out your playlist, because it’s all about how evilness is relative—after all, “every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints.” It’s easy to put a label on something. But sometimes in real life, things escape easy categorization—like when you’re a demon who really wants to be a good person. When you’re half demon, it’s much easier to have sympathy for the devil. Maybe you both got assigned labels that don’t quite fit.

Embracing the Demon
Dale Highland #2
Amazon BN Indiebound Mysterious Galaxy
Dale Highland never wanted to be a demon…but now she may be the only one who can save them all…

Dale Highland never wanted to be a demon, never wanted to go back to the supernatural world, but now she has no choice.

A militant anti-supernatural group called the Zeta Coalition is trying to kill Dale, and a mysterious illness ravages angels and demons throughout the world. As the death toll rises, and the Zetas get closer and closer to Dale, she starts to realize the two things are connected.

To save them all, Dale will have to team up with John Goodwin, the man she once loved. The man who destroyed her.

But by the time Dale and John figure out the Zetas’ real intentions, it may be too late…

Excerpt:

He wore a gray suit with a dark shirt and a blue tie that fit him so perfectly I knew it must have been custom made for him. His dark blond hair had been combed and gelled into submission. Normally, it stood up in random spikes around his head—not as a stylistic choice, but because he had the tendency to run his fingers through it nervously until it went in about 14 different directions.
Until that moment, I hadn’t been convinced he’d survived the fall off the roof of Amara’s estate. Every night in my dreams, I stared at his broken body, tears running down my face. I wasn’t sure why I cried: because I had killed him, or because he had destroyed me.
But here was John, very much alive, looking like the fantasy of some billionaire boss about to have hot monkey sex with his secretary on the desk. He didn’t look like the John I remembered, who’d spent most of our time together wearing blood-covered t-shirts. Which one was the real John, I wondered, the suave businessman or the urban warrior? And then I noticed the pin on his lapel: a flaming angel that matched the ones on the others’ pendants. John had declared his allegiance, and it wasn’t to me.
“My apologies for the mess,” he said. “Ephraim, Leah, please clean that up. Make sure you dispose of the body well. I don’t want him coming back to haunt us one of these days.” A man and a woman jumped out of their seats and scooped up the body, leaving just a puddle of blood behind. Guess they’d be getting that later.
John turned to the rest of the group. “Let’s not forget why we’re here. This illness is already devastating our community, and it’s getting worse. The Zeta Coalition created it with the intent of wiping out supernaturals—angels and demons. And if we can’t cooperate, they will succeed.”
“She’s the daughter of our worst enemy!” someone shouted.
“Amara is dead. And Dale is not Amara.” He paused. “Covington is right. We need more information if we’re going to survive this, and Dale is our best hope of gaining access to their records containment facility.”
“What about taking an army and storming the compound, like we talked about a few weeks ago?” someone asked.
To my surprise, it was Tina who answered. “The compound is too heavily fortified, and its underground architecture would make it difficult to strong-arm. We’ve run the scenario many times, accounting for the different variables. The most likely outcome is that we’d end up trapped down there while the Zetas pick us off.”
“There must be another way,” a woman said.
“Maybe, but this is the best way,” John replied. “We all know Dale can do things that no one else can. Her return may have been a coincidence, but we should use that to our advantage.”
“I haven’t agreed to anything yet,” I managed to get out through gritted teeth.

Promo + Giveaway: Alpha by Jus Accardo ( @XpressoTours @JusAccardo)

Apha
The Infinity Division #3
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes Noble / iBooks / Kobo
“A fun YA sci-fi story with a compelling cast of characters.” —Kirkus Reviews on Infinity
Sera is the obsession of a killer chasing a ghost. G is a soldier with too much blood on his hands.
Dylan lost the only person he ever loved—and will stop at nothing to get her back.
In a whirlwind chase that takes them back to where it all started, Sera, G, and Dylan will have to confront their demons—both physical and mental—and each other, in order to win their freedom.

Excerpt:

The rain stopped, and the wind outside had settled, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake. I didn’t have a problem with the quiet. I liked it, in fact. But this was something a little different. This was uncomfortable. The kind of stillness that came from forced proximity to someone or something that made your skin itch and your stomach roil. The kind of hush that usually set in right before a devastating storm or a natural disaster.
He did this sometimes. Just sat across from me and stared. He usually wouldn’t even say anything. I didn’t think he expected me to say anything, either. He just looked. Sometimes it lasted a few minutes, just long enough to send that chill skittering up and down my spine. Other times it would go on for hours. He’d blink and breathe and fidget, but his eyes…those remained locked on me, his unhealthy mix of sadness and lust and greed and anger crushing me to the point of breathlessness.
We were at it again, and I was just about out of patience. It was one thing to have been ripped away from my home, from my life, by that madwoman, Cora Anderson. It was another to have her poke and prod and use me as a science experiment. She’d altered my mind. Made me forget most of my life before the day I woke up a prisoner on the floor of her cold, dank cell. Those things were all bad, but having been “rescued” by this bastard and forced to stay by his side at all times? That was an entirely new level of torture.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” His tone was acidic and his jaw tight. He had a temper, this guy. I’d seen it multiple times. He’d never done anything more than scream at me, but it was only a matter of time with people like this. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt it in my bones. Maybe I’d known someone like him at home. Maybe it was just intuition.
“Yes,” was all I replied. I found that simple, one-word responses went over the best. Or, more accurately, the worst. When I said too little, he grew agitated. He wanted me to talk to him, yet the things that came out of my mouth weren’t ever what he wanted to hear. I didn’t act like he’d hoped I would, didn’t say the things he longed to hear. Some days he was determined to change me. Others, he was rabid, blaming me for not behaving like myself and demanding that I wake up.
Forget that I had no idea who I was.
“While it’s not okay, I understand.” He offered me a smile—a small, tentative twitch of his lips and gentle shrug of his shoulders. He was making an effort to be kinder today, going out of his way to speak softer and move slower.
That made me even angrier.
“You understand? Then my life is complete. All I’ve ever wanted was the understanding of a serial killer.” Even if I hadn’t been thinking about…someone else, I would have lied. The fact that I wasn’t focused on him, and him alone, drove Dylan—my savior, my captor—crazy. But the truth was, I was thinking of him. That other him. How could I not? Even if I didn’t find myself missing him every moment of every day in an almost physical way, I wouldn’t be able to put him out of my mind because he was technically sitting here across from me.

Interview + Giveaway: Deepest Midnight by Clara Winter ( @ClaraWinter10 )

UFI welcomes Author Clara Winter. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I am a big dog lover. I really love all dogs, but Siberian Huskies are my favorite breed. I have worked for a rescue in the past, and we have had the honor of providing a permanent home for five sweet huskies and a short-term foster home for one. We currently have two 9-year-old Siberians, and they are showing no signs of slowing down.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

We live in Southern California, so I very much enjoy the beach and Disneyland. I’m kind of a Disney addict and go whenever I have the chance. I’m also an avid reader and am always reading something.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Having an outlet to express myself creatively, is the best. Secondly, there is almost nothing better than seeing bits and pieces of ideas come together to form a complete story. Seeing the finished product, a piece you have worked so hard on, is pure joy.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I have to begin writing in the morning, immediately after my first cup of coffee. If I can manage that, then I am usually pretty productive. If it gets to be too late in the day before I begin, then I just feel off and rarely get into a good groove.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Anne Rice, all the way. She was the writer who ignited my love for paranormal. Anything she writes is gold, in my opinion. I have also enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse Series and Sherilyn Kenyon’s Demon Hunter Novels, to name a couple.

How would you pitch Deepest Midnight, Book One of the Immortal Kindred Series to someone who has not heard of it before?

Deepest Midnight is the story of a vampiress, who was once a French noblewoman. The love of her life was murdered before she became immortal. Two hundred years later she locks eyes with a man who looks exactly like her lost love. Is this a second chance love or another tragedy waiting to happen?

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Deepest Midnight is set in?

Deepest Midnight is set in modern day Savannah, Georgia with occasional glimpses back to 18th century France.

Do you have a favorite scene in Deepest Midnight?

There are a few, but my favorites are the scenes of the past. Describing the historical fashion and jewels was so much fun.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I just finished Book Three, in which I tell the story of Alexandre. He has become my favorite character, which surprised me. Again, I don’t want to give too much away, but he has quite the exciting story. The hardest to write about was a secondary character from Deepest Midnight, but no spoilers.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Rebel Heart, Book Two of The Immortal Kindred Series releases in February 2019. The King of Kings, Book Three, releases in July 2019.

Deepest Midnight
Immortal Kindred #1
Amazon Kobo BN
 True love never dies.

At least, it doesn’t for Millicent, a once French noblewoman turned immortal vampire. The love of her life is murdered before she became immortal. Forever is a long time to live in despair. Two hundred forty years later, she locks eyes with an English actor, who happens to look exactly like her dead lover.

Sadness turns to happiness as Millicent and Jack find passion in each other’s arms. Their fling quickly turns serious as Millicent finds happiness once again—and possibly her one true love.

However, their relationship becomes complicated by her own uncertainty, Jack’s mortality, and the other man in Millicent’s life, Alexandre, her maker and companion. When Alexandre puts his foot down, Millicent must decide if she’s going to continue to be led by others or take the reins and drive the outcome of her life.

Deepest Midnight is set in modern day Savannah, Ga with occasional glimpses back to 18th century France. This is the first book in The Immortal Kindred Series.
Book Trailer: https://youtu.be/hitN-DZvZts

Excerpt:

“Go be miserable somewhere else, Millicent,” grumbles Alexandre.
It’s going to be one of those nights. Alexandre pulls me up and hands me my black leather clutch. He steers me toward the darkly stained front door of our antebellum Savannah home. Before opening the door, he bends down to put shoes on my feet, like I’m a child. If he wants me to brood elsewhere, I will. Alexandre appreciates people who are bright and cheery. His reason for tolerating my presence for so long is one of life’s many mysteries.
“We have all lost people we love, Mills. We go on. If you can’t ever learn to do the same, what’s the point?”
“Good question, what is the point?”
“You can choose to be happy again. I’m not sure how much longer I can stand to have you around like this. For tonight, go find something to distract your mind.”
I can’t blame Alexandre for wanting me to disappear this evening. The life of the party tires of the buzz kill. Thankfully, one of the many wonderful things about Savannah is the abundance of mysterious spots, all perfect for sulking. Secluded squares, thick with foliage dripping in Spanish moss, decaying alleyways lined with ancient cobblestone, and hidden stone staircases topped with wrought iron railings, all provide perfect places to hide away. My stormy mood, has long felt at home in this haunted city.

Interview + Giveaway: Awaken the Darkness by Dianne Duvall (@DianneDuvall @AuthorsTaproom)

UFI welcomes Author Dianne Duvall. Thanks for Joining us!!

Awaken the Darkness Character Interview

Hello!  Thank you for joining me.  I’m very happy to be here, celebrating the upcoming release of AWAKEN THE DARKNESS, the eighth book in my Immortal Guardians series. If you like powerful immortal heroes, kick-ass heroines, and a lot of action, passion, humor and romance, then I think you’ll enjoy this book. Don’t worry if you’re new to the series. Each Immortal Guardians book can be read as a stand-alone novel or novella. You’ll just be more familiar with the secondary characters if you read them in order.

Today I thought I would give you a glimpse of the hero and heroine of AWAKEN THE DARKNESS—Stanislav and Susan—through a character interview.  Sheldon, one of the mortals in my series (and a favorite of myself and many readers, thanks to the comic relief he provides) will be interviewing them.

Sheldon: First, let me say it’s really great to have you back, Stan.

Stanislav: Thank you. And you are…?

Sheldon: *stares* Dude, you don’t know who I am?

Stanislav: *shrugs* Are you a reporter?

Susan: *nods* I think he is. He’s here to interview us, right?

Sheldon: I’m not a reporter! I’m Richart’s Second.

Stanislav: *lips twitch* I know. I was just kidding.

Sheldon: Uncool, man.

Susan: *laughs* You ARE here to interview us though, right?

Sheldon: Yes.

Susan: Why? I thought the whole immortals, vampires, and gifted ones thing was supposed to stay hush-hush.

Sheldon: It is. But the humans who work for the Network, researching a cure for the virus that infects immortals, providing them with weapons, cleaning up their messes, etc., have been running into more immortals lately and it’s sparked their curiosity.

Stanislav: Their curiosity or their fear?

Sheldon: *hesitates* Both.

Susan: *frowns* Why would Network employees fear you? They know you and your immortal brethren are out there every night, hunting and slaying psychotic vampires who prey upon humans. They even help you do it.

Sheldon: Yes, but you’ve been around immortals long enough now, Susan, to know that some of the sh** they can do is...

Stanislav: *arches a brow* Shocking?

Sheldon: To say the least. And some people find the special gifts coupled with the incredible strength, speed and regenerative capabilities you possess…

Susan: A tad frightening?

Sheldon: Yes.

Susan: I suppose I can understand that. I was born with a special gift myself and was STILL a bit unnerved by some of the things Stanislav can do.

Sheldon: *grins* So I’ve heard. BUT we’ve done enough of these interviews in recent years to temper the fear and spark Network employees’ curiosity. *looks to Stanislav* And everyone wants to know where the hell you’ve been, man.

Stanislav: *grunts* Stuck in the ground, consumed by pain.

Sheldon: Yes, but how did you get there? Contrary to popular belief, neither vampires nor immortals are dead. Or undead. Or go to ground during the day. So how did you end up… *trails off as Stanislav’s eyes begin to glow*

Susan: *reaches over and rests a hand on Stan’s knee* We don’t really need to talk about that, do we? That wound is still pretty raw.

Sheldon: Oh. Sure. I mean, no. We don’t have to go into that. But can I ask… Susan, you found him, didn’t you?

Susan: *smiles* Yes, I did.

Sheldon: In your basement.

Susan: Yes.

Sheldon: I think I speak for everyone when I ask… Why the hell were you digging in your basement?

Susan: *smile turns wry* That’s what I kept asking myself.

Stanislav: *winks at her* I have a way of compelling her to do things she ordinarily wouldn’t.

Susan: *laughs and gives his shoulder a shove* Don’t say it like that. You make it sound like we do weird things in bed.

Stanislav: *grins* Don’t we? Last night, did you or did you not ask me to—

Susan: *claps a hand over his mouth and blushes* Don’t say it!

Sheldon: *wide-eyed* Dude.

Stanislav: *peels her hand from his mouth and presses a kiss to her palm* I wasn’t. I just love to see you blush.

Susan: *laughs* You’re so bad.

Sheldon: *mutters* In more ways than one. *clears his throat* So Stanislav, you were born with empathic abilities?

Stanislav: Yes. I not only can read other people’s emotions, I can manipulate them as well.

Sheldon: And for the newbie’s at the Network, you have these abilities because you were a gifted one before your transformation.

Stanislav: Yes. I was born with advanced DNA that bestowed that particular gift upon me.

Sheldon: Immortals are gifted ones who are infected with the vampiric virus and vampires are ordinary humans who are infected with the virus.

Stanislav: Correct. And, unfortunately, without our advanced DNA—which protects us from the more corrosive aspects of the virus—humans infected with it suffer progressive brain damage that rapidly drives them insane, so they all ultimately become violent predators.

Susan: That’s so sad. Do you think the doctors at the Network will find a cure?

Stanislav: I don’t know.

Sheldon: For Cliff’s sake, I hope they will. Susan, you were born a gifted one, too. What gift do you possess?

Susan: I’m telepathic.

Sheldon: So you can read other people’s minds?

Susan:
Yes.

Stanislav: *turns to Susan* That reminds me, you might want to avoid reading Sheldon’s mind, because—

Susan: Oh! *winces and squeezes her eyes shut* Ewwww. I wish I hadn’t seen that. I mean I REALLY wish I hadn’t seen that.

Stanislav: *grimaces* Too late.

Sheldon: What’s too late? Did she read my mind?

Stanislav: Yes.

Susan: *slaps Stanislav on the thigh* Why didn’t you warn me sooner?

Stanislav: *chokes back a laugh* I forgot.

Sheldon: Oh, come on. I know the other telepaths like to complain about the porn and weird crap they find in my head. But it’s not THAT bad.

Susan: *still wincing* Yes, it is. It really is.

Stanislav: *grins at Susan* I love it when you blush.

Susan: You’re not helping, honey.

Sheldon: Okay-okay. You’ve had a big laugh. Now let’s change the subject and get back to the… Ah hell. Now she’s doing that thing Dana does.

Stanislav: What thing?

Sheldon: Dana gets red in the face whenever I look her in the eye.

Stanislav: Why? Did she read your mind too? I thought she was psychic, not telepathic.

Sheldon: She IS psychic. But apparently when she touched my hand she saw something from my past.

Stanislav: The incident in Italy?

Sheldon: *eyebrows fly up* You know about that?

Stanislav: EVERYONE knows about that.

Susan: *jaw drops as she stares at Sheldon with wide eyes* You actually DID that? In PUBLIC?

Stanislav: *motions to Sheldon’s reddening face* Look. Now it’s HIS turn to blush.

Sheldon: *rises* Okay. I can see this interview is going to go nowhere now, so let’s just pick it up again another time.

Susan: *calls after him* I’m sorry. I’ll try not to blush next time I see you. *looks at Stanislav as the door closes behind Sheldon* Seriously, you need to do something to get those images out of my head.

Stanislav: *lifts her over onto his lap and captures her lips a long, deep, passionate kiss*

Susan: *smiles up at him* That’ll work. Now do it again.

Stanislav: *complies with a grin*

Return to the "utterly addictive" (RT Book Reviews), "fast-paced and humorous" (Publishers Weekly) world of New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians.

He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.

When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.

Don't miss a heart-pounding moment of Dianne Duvall's "utterly addictive" Immortal Guardians series!
