Guest Blog + Giveaway: Albion Moon by M.L. Mastran (@MLMastran, @RoxanneRhoads, @champagnebooks)

UFI welcomes Author M.L. Mastran. Thanks for Joining us!!

Hello all! M.L. Mastran here; author of Albion Moon, the first in a series.  I would like to tell you a little about my book and then a bit about the characters I most connect with and why.  So, real quick, here’s a bit about Albion Moon. Evaline's brother is missing. She's desperate to find out what happened to him. As she digs deeper into his disappearance, the mystery reveals an ancient family secret carried through the bloodline that began centuries ago in the Scottish Highlands. As this secret from the old world closes in on Evaline, she tries to sort through her disconcerting feelings towards the mysterious Mason. He not only seems to always know when she is in danger, but he is insistent on protecting her, no matter the cost. She also begins to sense changes to herself that need an explanation. As the threat grows near, she must make a decision to stand up and fight or risk losing all she holds dear, including freedom.

Exciting eh? Let’s talk characters!  I am a firm believer that the characters drive the story. So they have to be strong and appealing enough for my readers to care about them and what is happening.  On that same note, I was asked before about how I connect with my characters.  There are characters I have a connection with more so than others and it’s not necessarily because I created them.  If that was the case, I would have bonds with many ☺ Each of my stories typically will feature several lovable characters & others not so loveable that the readers will get to know. I create them to what I believe their purpose to the story would be. It’s not always all business either! Sometimes they possess traits or quirks I may see in the real world.  For instance. Aaron, one of Mason’s brothers has this obsession with 90’s music. It drives his family crazy but it really doesn’t necessarily impact the plot or storyline.  It simply makes him relatable.  For Albion Moon in particular, I am most definitely connected with my protagonist, Evaline.  For my readers, Evaline represents that strong independence and strength that many of us have inside. She’s just a bit more in your face about it.  I feel more connected with her in that I’ve been in her head for quite a while now. She tries so hard to keep others around her she cares about from getting involved and believes she can handle things herself. She certainly can with most things but not this. As Mason’s family tell her at one point, “You are in over your head.” This is mostly because they know who and what she is dealing with, which at that point in the story hasn’t been revealed just yet. As what is coming finds her and the family, she faces it head on but with a little help. It’s not until she realizes it isn’t something she can do on her own, that she finally agrees to let Mason and the others help. This is a quality I also possess. I will do what I can as long as I can until I have no other choice.

My second connection would have to be Isaac, the eldest brother and subsequently the leader of the family.  Isaac represents the nucleus of the family in my story. They turn to him for guidance, advice, or what to do next, particularly in those rough situations the family finds themselves in. I can connect with him because, being a wife and mother, I too am the nucleus of the family. They turn to me when something is wrong, what to do next, and so forth. Like Isaac, I have had the weight of the world on my shoulders but because of the leadership role, Isaac can’t break or step down. It’s a responsibility he takes seriously, just as I do with my own family.

I hope this gives you a bit more insight into Albion Moon and a couple of the characters.

Albion Moon is quite a ride and I hope the story keeps you wanting more. Book two will be released sometime this year so stay tuned!

Stand up and fight or lose everything
Evaline's brother is missing. She's desperate to find out what happened to him. As she digs deeper into his disappearance, the mystery reveals an ancient family secret carried through the bloodline that began centuries ago in the Scottish Highlands. As this secret from the old world closes in on Evaline, she tries to sort through her disconcerting feelings towards the mysterious Mason. He not only seems to always know when she is in danger, but he is insistent on protecting her, no matter the cost.

As the old world collides with the new, Evaline discovers she must choose to stand and fight or risk losing everything, and everyone, she holds dear.
Excerpt:

Over the next couple days, I picked up applications from the couple of banks and other places in town as well as in Shasta, the next town over. On Thursday, Kristy, Lizzy, and I hung out and went for ice cream downtown. We hit a couple of stores as Kristy wanted to get some clothes. I loathed clothes shopping. I peeked at the racks while Kristy tried stuff on and Lizzy weighed in. She got a text. One of the other servers had called off, and Mason needed her to come in.
“I have to get to work. Sorry, Kristy,” Lizzy said.
“That’s fine,” Kristy said. “Can we get some lunch there when we take you in?”
I shook my head slightly at her scheming.
“Absolutely,” Lizzy said, looking at me. “Let’s go.”
We piled into my car and headed out onto Old River Road. It was a great day for a convertible ride. The late summer sun beamed on us as we drove down the road. I had AC/DC blaring, and as we rounded a curve, I heard a siren. Peering into my rearview mirror, I eyed the red flashing police lights atop one of the town’s two SUV police units.
Kristy glanced back. “What the fuck? You weren’t speeding.”
I looked down. I was just below the speed limit. After I pulled over, I got out my registration and insurance. The cop approached my door, and what I saw caused a huge lump to form in my throat.
Campbell had a smug look on his face as he spoke. “License, registration, and proof of insurance please.”
I handed them over without making eye contact.
He examined my license, which still had my Sacramento address on it. “A little way from Sacramento, Miss Bennett, aren’t we?”
“Yeah, I guess I am.”
“Where are you headed right now?” His tone turned from mocking to icy.
“I need to get her to work,” I said, indicating Lizzy.
He eyed Lizzy, who appeared annoyed by his questions. “Oh, a Cowan sister. How fitting. Tell your brother I got a nice cell waiting for him.” She didn’t say anything as his attention moved back to me. “So, are you here on vacation?”
My blood boiled as the dream I had with Jimmy came back to me. I glared at Campbell. “I’m visiting family for a while.”
“So, what is the address you’re staying at in town?”
“What does that matter?” Kristy interrupted any response I was about to make. “What the f—?”
“Smart ass like your brother,” he said, cutting her off. “He’s a great bunk mate for Jonas.”
Now speechless, she sat there.
After opening my door, he indicated for me to move. “Please step out of the vehicle.”
Not wishing to cause a scene, I complied and stood by my car.
He turned me around. “Face your car, hands on the hood.”
Kristy found her voice again. “Are you fucking kidding me? We weren’t doing anything!”
Campbell flashed her a look. “Shut up and don’t move.” He then patted me down. “Do you have any weapons or drug paraphernalia I need to be aware of?” He spun me back to him.
Looking at him dead in the eye, I answered, “No.”
Holding my elbow, he walked me toward his vehicle as he eyed Kristy and Lizzy, who were clearly uncomfortable with what was happening. Despite my apprehension, I followed him. He took me behind his patrol truck and returned my license.
“I suggest you watch yourself, Miss Bennett. These back roads are dangerous, and if something were to happen, it could be quite a while until you’d be found.” My stomach churned as he leaned into me and whispered, “A woman like yourself, all alone, might entice trouble.” He reached for my breast, and I reacted quickly.
Shoving the bottom of my palm up into his lip, I knocked him back but didn’t wait to see his reaction. I returned to my car, got in, then took off. I was sure he was going to follow, but he didn’t.
Kristy turned to me. “We need to report him, Evaline. That was wrong in so many ways.”
Shaking my head, I said, “It will make things worse, trust me. Just forget it, okay?”
She gave Lizzy a concerned look, who then asked, “Why did he take you back there?”
I didn’t say anything as we drove into the parking lot, parked, then got out.
Kristy was still fired up. “This is such bullshit. He made a move on you, didn’t he?”
“Just drop it, Kristy, okay? It’s over. I wanna forget it.”
The dust kicked up in the parking lot as we made our way through the front doors. A few patrons were seated at the bar, and several booths and tables were occupied. We headed to an open booth as Lizzy returned to the back.
While still a bit shaken from the encounter, I pondered what had just happened. A knot was in the pit of my stomach as thoughts raced through my mind.
Does he know I know what he is? Will he try to hurt what family I have left? Will he hurt me to find out what I know? I thought of my dream again—Jimmy had warned me. Or will he kill me?

Interview: Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik (@jessiemihalik, @harpervoyagerUS)

UFI welcomes Author Jessie Mihalik. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I’m an introvert. I have a book signing coming up and I’m so nervous because I’ll have to stand up in front of a group of people and hopefully be entertaining. So if you’re ever nervous when you meet your favorite author, don’t worry—they might be nervous to meet you, too!

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Overall, I’m a huge nerd. I love to play video games in my down time, especially co-op games with my husband. We’re currently playing Fallout 76, and despite the mediocre reviews, we’re having a blast. I also love to play board games with friends. And I read, of course, as I think all writers do. I also try to get outside and hike or run when the weather is nice.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I love the creative aspect of writing. I get to make up entire worlds and invite readers into them. And I get to create two characters who are perfect for each other, but who don’t always see it from the beginning, and then get them together.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

No, I don’t have any required routines.  I generally have a vague idea of where I’m going in a particular scene and I sit down and figure out how to get there. I don’t plot far ahead, which sometimes gets me in trouble, so I tend to go back and tweak previous scenes as I’m writing. Then, once I’m finished, I do a final pass revision or two before I send it off to my beta readers or editor.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

For urban fantasy, I love the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews, and the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire, and Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse. For science fiction, I love the Dred Chronicles series by Ann Aguirre, Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach, and The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells.

How would you pitch POLARIS RISING to someone who has not heard of it before?

Polaris Rising is a sexy space opera adventure.

When space princess Ada von Hasenberg is captured and thrown into a cell with outlaw soldier Marcus Loch, she fears she won’t escape in time to prevent the mercenaries from returning her to Earth—and her imminent arranged marriage. But when their ship is attacked by a battle cruiser from rival House Rockhurst, Ada knows she has bigger problems. She offers Loch a fortune to help her escape, but can she really trust the man known as the Devil of Fornax Zero?

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that POLARIS RISING is set in?

Polaris Rising is set in the far distant future. Humans have figured out faster than light travel and have spread across the universe. The universe is ruled by the Royal Consortium, a government made up of various houses, but the three High Houses wield the most power. Ada, the main character, is the fifth of six children of High House von Hasenberg.

Do you have a favorite scene in POLARIS RISING?

I have a lot of favorite scenes, but the one that’s closest to my heart is the opening scene. The idea of a woman fighting mercenaries as they tried to wrestle her onto their ship in order to collect her bounty had floated around in my head for weeks, but I had ignored it in an attempt to write a different book. Once I finally gave in and wrote it, the rest of the book just poured out.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I loved writing Ada because she was my first science fiction heroine. She’s smart and competent and refuses to let others push her around, but she also knows when she needs help and reaches out to her friends for support. The hardest was probably Richard Rockhurst because, in his mind, he’s the hero, but we only see him from Ada’s perspective.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Aurora Blazing, book two of the Consortium Rebellion, comes out in October, and book three is scheduled for next year. On my blog, I’m posting chapters of The Queen’s Advantage, a free space opera serial novella set it in its own world. It’s the sequel to The Queen’s Gambit that I also serialized first and then self-published.

A space princess on the run and a notorious outlaw soldier become unlikely allies in this imaginative, sexy space opera adventure—the first in an exciting science fiction trilogy.

In the far distant future, the universe is officially ruled by the Royal Consortium, but the High Councillors, the heads of the three High Houses, wield the true power. As the fifth of six children, Ada von Hasenberg has no authority; her only value to her High House is as a pawn in a political marriage. When her father arranges for her to wed a noble from House Rockhurst, a man she neither wants nor loves, Ada seizes control of her own destiny. The spirited princess flees before the betrothal ceremony and disappears among the stars.
Ada eluded her father’s forces for two years, but now her luck has run out. To ensure she cannot escape again, the fiery princess is thrown into a prison cell with Marcus Loch. Known as the Devil of Fornax Zero, Loch is rumored to have killed his entire chain of command during the Fornax Rebellion, and the Consortium wants his head.

When the ship returning them to Earth is attacked by a battle cruiser from rival House Rockhurst, Ada realizes that if her jilted fiancĂ© captures her, she’ll become a political prisoner and a liability to her House. Her only hope is to strike a deal with the dangerous fugitive: a fortune if he helps her escape.

But when you make a deal with an irresistibly attractive Devil, you may lose more than you bargained for . . .

Guest Blog + Giveaway: Strange Omens by Jim Stein (@JimSteinBooks, @RoxanneRhoads )

UFI welcomes Author Jim Stein. Thanks for Joining us!!

Edan Johnson—Ed to his friends—has been meaning to take notes on his developing magic, and finds snatches of down time after the mysteries, danger, and adventure that plagued the band on tour in Strange Omens (Legends Walk book 2).
Tuesday the 6th:
We turned back another horde of nasties this afternoon. Since there’s a lull in the action, I figured I’d start that journal I keep talking about.
Music has power. I should have realized that years ago. Maybe I did. Certain pre-virus songs always sent a chill through me, and from day one I could sort through the corporate-pushed garbage to find true gems. That’s what I did as a kid, snuck into Old Philadelphia’s ruins to gather old tapes and CDs. Vinyl never survives well.
My sister’s much better at writing things down, so I know this attempt will be a joke compared to Piper’s notebooks full of all things occult. Many won’t recognize the ancient songs that focus my magic, but I’ve gathered so much awesome music that I need to keep better track of what works best with my spells. I’ve organized this list by the elemental magic each song best supports.
  • Important note: not just pre-viral greats hold power. Most of the A-Chord’s music calls the magic. So never discount new groups as music makes its comeback. Billy and the band are good friends, and I’m hoping to record their next album, but their tour taught me that new music kicks evil butt just as well as my old-school tracks.
Fire spells call the most erratic of my three elements. Frenzied tunes with time signature and key changes work best to guide its destructive nature. The flames are always hungry and require firm control. The flip side of the element is its healing power, although this too comes down to destroying things like poison, viral infections, and bacteria.
  • “Light Em Up” by the Fallout Boys (note: lyrics need not describe the element or the spell’s intended purpose. This one just happens to align well.)
  • “Seek and Destroy” by Metallica
  • “Pain” by Three Days Grace
  • “Ain’t no Rest for the Wicked” by Cage the Elephant
Earth spells take a heavy, steady beat with underlying resolve. As you might imagine, Earth can influence rocks, minerals, and metals. I’ve also played around with enhancing strength—more on that later. The magic flows deep and needs to be properly grounded, or the caster will pay for it. Trust me, I know. Remember Milwaukee!
  • “Cut the Cord” by Shinedown
  • “Rise” by Skillet
  • “Orion” by Metallica
  • “Wanton Power” by the A-Chords
Spirit energy might be the most flexible, and hardest to classify. The “right” music will resonate with the caster on a personal level, matching their temperament. This holds true even for Quinn’s spells, and she’s part witch. So the songs that work for me to seek objects, move air, or set up shields, might not work for others casting Spirit. Our recent work with illusion doesn’t approach what Pina and the sprites can achieve, but certainly comes in handy.
  • “Take out the Gunman” by Chevelle
  • “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeplin
  • “Dark no More” by the A-Chords
  • “Sail” by Awolnation

Well, the moon’s rising and that’s sure to bring more nasty critters out of the desert. I wish we had a better plan, but at least we’re holding our own here in New Philly. Never forget that magic doesn’t work on all the things that go bump in the night. Until next time, this is Ed saying…well, goodnight. (note: lame sign-off; come up with something catchy)

Who wins when gods interfere?
Recent months in New Philadelphia have been pleasantly monster-free, allowing Edan Johnson to focus on launching the band’s new album. Music brought hope, something the world’s dwindling population desperately needed. But when a mysterious promotion company sends the A-Chords on tour and the audience splits into opposing factions, it’s clear that gods and dark forces are once again meddling.

Ed’s command of music and magic grows strong, but an arrogant goddess decrees he must not interfere. Even his own sister scolds him for casting spells. But Ed connects with the band’s free-spirited groupies and vows to keep them safe from the more sinister patrons flocking to “The Company’s” backstage events.

More hangs in the balance than the simple corruption of a few fans. These happy, bright people could be the salvation of the human race, yet are being drawn in like sheep. Someone or something stalks the tour, and evil lurks in the heart of Old Milwaukee.

Magic, monsters, and kindred spirits keep Ed and his friends scrambling to discover what’s going on behind the scenes, but an improbable friendship just might be the key to their survival

Excerpt:

“What now, Ed?” Trinity asked from my left.
We crouched behind a rotting car covered in vines and watched the Grims. Bald Jim looked to be in charge. Shawn sat on the ground at Dan’s feet, head hung low. The bruise around his eye and dried blood on his lip testified to the fact he had gone down fighting. Dan probably wore the Hawaiian shirt and posed as a victim.
Trinity had enough sense to tail them without trying a rescue. We caught up to her just before the Grims stopped at a massive bronze doorway totally at odds with the architecture of the ruined city. The thing was better suited for a medieval castle, though I had to admit it was effective. Jim and Dan argued over how best to get inside.
“Five of them and four of us,” I said.
“They’re bruisers,” Quinn whispered. “No offense, but we couldn’t take any of them, except maybe scraggly Dan.”
“Where’s it lead?” Trinity asked.
Good question. The out of place obstruction melded into the stone archway across a low entrance to what might be a basement level. The arguing continued as Jim tried an incantation. The door rebuffed his attempt. Oily bits of the magic passphrase dripped to the ground. Though a simple spell, the darkness of it differed from the elements Quinn and I used.
“You’re doing it wrong,” Dan complained to the men gathered at the door.
“He’s such a little shit.” Trinity’s lip curled.
“For once that’s working in our favor,” Quinn said.
Dan stalked over to the others, grabbed something small and metallic out of Jim’s hands, and examined the door. Magic formed around another incantation. Shawn sat unguarded at the entrance to the alcove. We scurried out from behind the car, circled the intersection, and crept along crumbling brickwork. The line of the alley kept us out of sight until I peeked around the corner. The Grims argued on, ignoring their dejected captive. Shawn stared at the pavement.
“Shawn.” No response. “Shawn! Time to go.”
Bleary eyes ringed with bruises met mine. He must have taken a good shot to the nose for double shiners to be rising so quickly. Recognition slowly dawned, followed by half a smile that dropped away. Shawn held up his hands. I’d missed the thin cord that bound wrists to ankles. It was silvery gray, looking more like yarn than rope.
“For crying out…” Quinn whipped out a knife and crept forward.
The moment her blade touched the cord, there was a flash. Quinn yelped and dropped her knife.
“Hey!” Dan looked up from the brass key in his hand.
“Just grab him!” I shouted.
Quinn hauled Shawn up by his armpits and pushed him forward. The cord forced him into an awkward half-crouch. I grabbed his arm to haul him down the street, but he stopped short and fell to the ground. Quinn and I pulled but couldn’t budge him. No one weighed that much. The cord flashed and flared, its strange power anchoring Shawn to the spot. More than that, a tether of power slowly dragged him back toward the doorway as the Grims advanced.
“Leave him. In fact, leave the girl. Two for the price of one!” Dan grinned his stupid parody of a Bright’s smile.
Each man carried a small club, undoubtedly weighted for maximum punch. Quinn worked at the bindings. Her strange watery power flowed along the cord looking for a way to loosen the knots. The Grims strode forward, in no hurry and—I like to think—wary. I could have taken Dan and the freak sporting a Mohawk. But I’d spent all year practicing my spells for a reason.
I reached for Earth to throw up a barrier and buy us time. Just as I was about to cast, flames leapt up between us and the men, effectively sealing them in the alcove. Trinity stood rigid, locked in concentration as she poured on more Fire and drove them back amid squawks of protest.
“Let me try.” I hunkered down to examine the cord.
Earth was ready at my fingertips, but when I tried to manipulate Shawn’s binding—as I would stone or metals—there was no purchase. The men tried end runs around Trinity’s flames, holding the woman’s concentration and forcing her to expend too much power. Another minute and we’d have to carry her out. Quinn saw it too.
“Help her!”
I dredged up a bit of old-school metal, Metallica’s “Seek and Destroy,” forging Fire to bolster Trinity’s spell. I split off a portion to attack the ropes. Fire was an enigma, representing the most restorative and destructive of the elements. I honed the lyrics down to a laser focus, emphasis on the destroy part of the tune to cut and burn. The cord swelled, resisting the heat, but frayed edges soon curled away from the core.
Shawn’s invisible bond contracted, yanking him toward the wall of fire. Quinn grabbed him around the waist but was dragged along. Even if Trinity and I cancelled our spells, they would be pulled across searing concrete into the midst of the waiting Grims.

Interview + Giveaway: Unbalanced by Courtney Shepard (@CAShepard76, @RoxanneRhoads)

UFI welcomes Author Courtney Shepard. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I’m a super nerd which is obvious, but I used to be kind of a jock too. I played field hockey and rugby in high school and a bit in college. I water skied, slalom and jumping, and rode horses competitively for a short time after school. I also took an outdoor survival course when I was 18. It was wild. I spent three weeks in the mountains roughing it with a final three-day solo where we were meant to ‘survive’ in the elements (yes snow) with limited water, food and shelter. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.

But that was then and this is now. These days I’m lucky if I can go for a couple of runs in a week.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Downtime is rare and precious for me, as with most people I suspect, but if I do get some, I don’t do much with it. I’m not very exciting. I wish I could say I go salsa dancing or fly-fishing, but no, I am quite boring. If I’m not writing, or able to squeeze in a luxurious nap, then I would probably catch up on tv shows I have been waiting to watch, movies, or books to read.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

My favorite part of writing is when I give myself goosebumps. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s sublime. If I allow my characters to lead my writing, sometimes the story begins to write itself and magic can happen. If I go back and read it, and it gives me goosebumps or makes me feel something, that is it. That is my perfect writing moment. I can’t get enough of that feeling.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Yes, I have a routine for writing, but it kind of goes against the rules. I have one of those brains where I need distraction otherwise I can’t focus. If it’s too quiet I can’t get into the right head space, so I like to write with the tv on. I prefer to put on a movie or show I’ve seen so many times it has become a type of background white noise. The soft, familiar sounds keep me going without distracting me enough to look up and watch.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I love Kelley Amstrong, Charlaine Harris, Laurel K Hamilton, and Christine Feehan. I adore books with strong female characters in lead roles, and if she’s got some kind of superpower, then you’ve got me.

How would you pitch Unbalanced to someone who has not heard of it before?

Every generation four sisters with elemental power are born to fight against a fanatical, secret faith. The Order hunts the sisters and sacrifices them for their power.

Separated and alone, the sisters with power over earth, air, fire, and water are unaware of each other and what hunts them, but evil is coming.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Unbalanced is set in?

Unbalanced takes place in this world much like this one, with only a few small differences.

There are four sisters running around with incredible elemental abilities. There is a fanatic secret faith that rules everything, but they rule in secret behind a curtain that separates this world and an uninhabited one. The Order exists behind the curtain, where Master of the Order can wield magic and control their strange followers. The world behind the curtain is parallel and empty, a pure, natural reflection of our world with no sentient creatures other than the Order’s Masters and followers.

The sisters and the Order do not impede the flow of the real world; however, they are the reason it exists and flows as it does.

Do you have a favorite scene in Unbalanced?

My favorite scene in Unbalance is when Asha and her sisters are all united for the first time since their separation as newborns. Ivy, the earth sister, has already found Mere, the water sister, and together they track Avia, the air sister, to a small cabin in the Swiss Alps.

Asha, the fire sister, arrives at Avia’s hideout with the Order. Little does she know that her long lost sisters are inside the cabin she just set on fire.  Her sisters bust out of the burning cabin to find an army awaiting them with Asha at the front of it. Asha’s sisters have no idea who they are or what they want.

When the Order attacks a battle breaks out and Asha must cross the battlefield to help her sisters.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Avia was my favorite character to write about. She is a mild-sociopath with the power of air. Her physical description is ethereal and a bit strange, and I enjoy her aloofness and her abilities. Ivy is the most difficult because she is supposed to be the good one, and I find it difficult to describe her goodness and stoicism under the circumstances of the story without coming off as too much and cheesy. Ivy is earth power and though she isformidable, and I think I found interesting ways for her to use her power, Ivy’s abilities are just not as much fun as Avia’s.

Unbent is the second book in the Unbalanced series, and it is coming out later this year.

 Excerpt:

With a crack and rumble, the ground surrounding the cabin broke apart and water burst from the earth. It sprayed as strong as any fire hose up and over the cabin. The pounding force was like a waterfall in reverse, and the flames sputtered and died.
She had never seen anything like it, an enormous water fountain extinguishing fire burning that hot. The cabin door, charred and still smoking, flew off its hinges and onto the flooded grass.
Three figures ran out into the early morning glare. Asha took off her helmet and slouchy hood, but her eyes weren’t playing tricks. She could see them clearly, even across the distance, and her stomach dropped. They stopped short, facing an army with guns raised. No.
“Fire!”
“Stop!” Her scream was too late; the soldiers fired. She didn’t have time to act; they were sitting ducks. She prepared for their thrashing bodies, but like a swarm of hovering locusts, the bullets stopped in mid-air and dropped.
What? She couldn’t get her mind around the scene unfolding before her. She’d lost control of her body. Her muscles wouldn’t move.
“Hold your fire,” Clay shouted, but the soldiers continued shooting.
His brothers were the only ones not attacking. They had to be as shocked by the falling bullets as she was. She couldn’t blame them. She was as still and as useless as a rock, unable to move or act, only watch in growing disbelief. Three young women stood against an army.
“Asha,” yelled one of the girls, her eyes were even brighter green than Clay’s. “We’re your sisters. We’ve been looking for you.”
Sisters?

Interview + Giveaway: The Vampire’s Temptation by Cecelia Mecca (@CeceliaMecca, @RoxanneRhoads)

UFI welcomes Author Cecelia Mecca. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

Although I am a romance author, I actually love fantasy as well. One of the first books I can remember reading in middle school, for enjoyment anyway, was The Hobbit. I also happen to be a bit of a Star Wars and Game of Thrones nerd. Ok, BIG nerd.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Writing, seriously. But also reading and hanging with the kiddos. And drinking red wine. Though not at the same time. Usually.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Creating stories that readers say kept them up at night. It sounds a bit sinister, I know, but when readers lose sleep, it’s my favorite!

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

If I don’t have chai, I can’t write. It’s really that simple. I also sometimes listen to Brain.fm, especially if there are distractions around me, but other than that, after checking emails and social media in the morning, it’s writing time.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I’m currently reading Grimm by Shayne Silvers, my favorite urban fantasy author. As for paranormal romance, my first was J.R.Ward, and you know what they say about your first. ☺ She’s still my go-to girl.

How would you pitch Bloodwite to someone who has not heard of it before?

I would let someone else do it. Shayne Silvers (mentioned above coincidentally) said, “Her story kicks the doors down, and delivers characters and depth that readers have been begging for. Bloodwite is everything the Twilight Saga should have been.”

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Bloodwite is set in?

Sure! Bloodwite is set in a small Pennsylvania town called Stone Haven which some say is the Switzerland of the US. Surrounded by mountains, the Main Street boats a five and dime store and Ye Old Curiosities as well as the popular Witche’s Brew coffeeshop. A perfect place to be visited by two seven-hundred-year-old vampires. . .

Do you have a favorite scene in Bloodwite ?

I do. Without spoiling, all I can say is after reading it you will never look at a train’s caboose the same way according to readers. Hint: sexy bits

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Without a doubt the heroine of The Vampire’s Temptation, Alessandra Fiore. She really comes into her own by the end of book one and, knowing her series arc, I was excited every day to spend time with her. If she were real, I would want Alessandra as my BFF!

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I’m currently working on the third book in the Bloodwite series. Since it’s a new paranormal romance series, getting the first few books out fairly quickly was important to me, so book two is already finished and book three will not be far behind, February and March 2019 respectively.

Cecelia Mecca is the author of steamy historical and paranormal romance that transports readers to another world.

Every heroine, from Lady Sara in the Border Series to Alessandra Fiore in Bloodwite, is your best friend– the one who kicks ass and takes names. When these ladies meet alpha-males who try to take control, sparks fly until the very last page.
Cecelia writes the Amazon bestselling Border Series which takes readers to an admittedly romanticized time of knights and castles in 13th century Northumbria along the Anglo-Scottish border. Next, she’s jumping into a new world which tests the patience of even the most steadfast romance heroine. After all, dealing with the ultimate bad boys– sexy, wealthy and swoon-worthy vampires– is not for the faint of heart. In other words, she’s releasing her first contemporary paranormal series in January 2019.

Our Highlander-loving, vampire-writing author can be found in Northeast, Pennsylvania, chai in hand, thinking up new ways to tame both medieval and paranormal playboys. She is firmly House Stark and Gryffindor.

The Vampire's Temptation
 Bloodwite #1
Amazon
Even cursed blood can fall prey to love’s bite.

Kenton Morley and Lawrence Derrickson have hated each other since they were feuding border lords in medieval England and Scotland…seven hundred years ago.
When their bloodlines were cursed, birthing the world’s first vampires.

Their feud has carried through the centuries based on an old argument: Kenton seeks to destroy the Cheld—the only line of humans capable of killing their kind—while Lawrence seeks to save them.

It’s said that men can forget, but never forgive. It’s also said that true love knows no bounds.

When the vampires move to Stone Haven, Pennsylvania, Alessandra Fiore will find out firsthand which of those old adages is true.

It doesn’t matter whether she believes in vampires or not…

Because they believe in her. And she’s on the very cusp of discovering her dormant powers as a Cheld—a potential vampire hunter.

With both of these strangely wealthy newcomers’ storming into her sleepy, peaceful town, warning her to stay away from the other, what is a girl to do?

Especially when Kenton—the one that supposedly wants to kill her—has a devilish twinkle in his eyes that she just can’t say no to?

No matter how dangerous she instinctively knows both men to be, strengths and powers of her own are beginning to bubble to the surface, encouraging her that she can take care of herself, thank you very much.

Love and Hate—two sides of the same coin. Literally.

The only thing left to do is flip that coin and hope for the best…to see which old saying is true. And how many innocents bet the wrong way.
Excerpt:
Lawrence was here.
Taking a sip of a gin and tonic, Kenton stared out into the distance from the second-floor balcony of his new home. A train’s whistle broke the blessed silence, though “silence” wasn’t truly silent for him, and hadn’t been for some time. In still moments, he could hear shop owners in town putting out their trash and preparing to close for the evening.
Even so, the view was relaxing—the line of trees across from him was broken by only one discernible building, the courthouse that stood guard on Main Street. The downtown area of Stone Haven was lined with brightly colored Victorian homes and townhouses. He’d considered purchasing one of the latter, only to dismiss the idea.
Too confining.
Now, it would seem, the decision had been a good one. If his senses were accurate, and they always were, his temporary lodgings were located just next door to his nemesis. Purchasing the mansion had attracted attention, but no matter. He would be long gone as soon as the deed was done.
He sat, making a mental note to request that his maidservant purchase cushions. Apparently the previous owner had not found wrought iron as uncomfortable as he did.
Kenton took another sip of his drink as darkness fell. The maid he’d hired from the previous staff—the mansion had been a bed and breakfast when he purchased it—appeared around the balcony to his right. She’d not spoken yet, but Kenton could hear her breathing.
“Send him up,” he said without turning toward her. “But from the outside entrance,” he added. “He may not go inside. Ever.”

Whether the woman was startled by his knowledge of her presence—because he already knew a guest waited below—or because of the vehemence of his request, Kenton wasn’t sure. Nor did it matter. What did matter was the man who even now made his way up the winding outside staircase.
As Lawrence entered the room connected to the balcony, it struck Kenton that he’d made a critical error. He should have killed the girl—woman, more precisely—before Lawrence had arrived. Now his purpose in Stone Haven would be more difficult to fulfill.
“Beautiful, isn’t she?” Lawrence asked, walking around to stand just next to him. He didn’t need to ask who. The man wasn’t talking about his elderly maid.
“I’d offer you a drink, but regrettably, you’re not staying.”
“How long have you known about her?” Lawrence Derrickson had the sole honor of being the only person to almost make him lose his temper in over seven hundred years, and it would seem he still had the ability to get a rise out of him.
“Longer than you, apparently.”
He knew the barb would hit its mark, and it did.
“Yet you haven’t killed her?” “Regrettably not.”
“Why?”
Knowing it would anger Lawrence, Kenton took a slow sip of his drink and looked down at the town below them.
“A quaint little place. Didn’t expect as much, although I must admit, the only other time I’ve been to Pennsylvania, when—”
“I don’t give a shit when you were here last or what you think of the town that you plan to terrorize, Kenton.”
“Terrorize? A bit harsh, don’t you think?”
He didn’t give Lawrence a chance to answer. “Nice of you to move so close to me, though I wouldn’t have expected you to splurge on such a luxury.”
Two mansions sitting side by side in a town of this size. The irony wasn’t lost on him. “I won’t let you kill her,” Lawrence insisted.
He laughed, not to taunt the other man, but it did have that added benefit. “I will enjoy watching you attempt to stop me.”
“She may not pose a threat. Will you for once listen to reason?”
Kenton shot to his feet in an instant, so close to Lawrence he could stun him into silence if he so chose. Centuries of fighting this very same man had taught him not to attempt to kill the Scot. It couldn’t be done. But he certainly enjoyed trying.
“She is a Cheld,” Kenton said.
For Lawrence, that wasn’t enough. For him, it always would be. “She is,” the Scot agreed. “But you don’t know—”
He rolled his eyes, annoyed by the tedious predictability of the argument. “Nor do I care.” Lawrence narrowed his eyes and clenched his fists, telegraphing his intentions as clearly as if he’d punched him. “Are you alone?”
He could lie, but Lawrence would learn the truth soon enough—that his siblings were far away from this quaint little Pennsylvania town. Their kind could sense one another, an ability Kenton had more than most, so he did not need to ask the same question about Lawrence’s kin.
Clan Karyn consisted only of one man, for now. Odd, since Lawrence usually traveled with at least one member of his precious clan, although a four-person family could hardly be called a clan, truth be told.
Nothing like the hundred men Lawrence once led.
“I am,” he said. “And so it seems we will have a bit of fun here in”—he waved his arms around him—“Stone Haven.”
Lawrence ground his teeth. “Fun? If you call the murder of an innocent woman—”
“Innocent?” Kenton lifted his chin. “She is a Cheld,” he repeated. “And for that, she cannot be allowed to live.” He lifted his glass. “A toast to our little secret. And to Alessandra Fiore’s last days on earth, poor thing.”
He downed the remainder of his drink in one gulp, then set the empty glass on the table. Droplets of red remained. Mary was none the wiser about the real contents of his favorite bottle of sloe gin. Stepping around Lawrence, he gripped the railing of the balcony and looked down below. “Have fun attempting to save her,” he said over his shoulder.
Just as Lawrence turned to walk away, muttering a curse under his breath, Kenton added, “I hope you have better luck than you did in Caltabellotta.”
He wasn’t surprised when Lawrence pushed him from the balcony. Indeed, he allowed it. And laughed the whole way down to the ground despite the risk of discovery.
Taunting him had been worth it.
