Promo & Giveaway: Reaver by Larissa Ione

REAVER – Heroes and Heartbreakers excerpt

“R-Reaver?”

Reaver held Harvester’s frail body tight against his as he navigated the final steps of a winding ledge that dropped them into a world of weird. “It’s me. It’s okay. We’re safe.”

Relatively safe, anyway. Relative meaning that they weren’t dead. Yet. He just hoped the same could be said for Tavin, Matt, and Calder. When he’d left them to sneak into Satan’s realm, they’d been engaged in a battle they’d initiated as a diversion. It had been a risky move, and Reaver could only pray they’d make it to the rendezvous point.

A hunter’s horn sounded in the distance and was answered by another, closer horn signal. Satan’s minions hadn’t gained ground, but they were spreading out. Damn.

He scanned the landscape of thorny plants, hills of blackened earth and trees, and twisted, abandoned structures. Nothing moved.

He looked down at Harvester, and as before when he first saw her hanging over a pit of acid, he felt sick to his stomach. He didn’t like Harvester even though he was grateful for the things she’d done, but she didn’t deserve this; her naked body too thin and mottled with bruises and ligature marks, her once silken black hair tangled and dull, and worst of all, missing her gorgeous green eyes.

Under ideal circumstances, an angel could heal from even the most heinous injuries within hours. But these were far from ideal circumstances, and Harvester’s source of power, her wings, had been severed. Without wings or medical assistance, it could take weeks, even months, for an angel’s body to fully heal.

“I can’t risk healing you more than I did,” he said. “My power isn’t reliable right now, and I could do more harm than good.”

“Reaver,” she croaked, as if he hadn’t spoken. “Why…how…”

“Shh.” He tucked her face into his chest, quieting her. “We’re going to meet up with some friends, and then I’ll answer all your questions.”

Reaver and the assassins had worked out a plan A and a plan B. Plan A had been shot to hell when iron gates had prevented Reaver from getting out of Satan’s realm to the south, where his companions would have been waiting. Now, with demons in pursuit, they were on their way to plan B. Hopefully Tav, Matt, and Calder had realized quickly that Reaver’s escape route had gone bad.

Inhaling the stench of rotten vegetation that permeated this section of Sheoul, he started away from the skeletons of some burned-out buildings and toward a mountain range as expansive as the Rockies. He moved swiftly, outrunning the sounds of pursuit and pausing once to blast a group of imps with a ball of lightning. The sphere struck the leader, and from there sent electrical strikes at each of the surrounding imps, frying them all in a handy eight-for-one.

Harvester slept in his arms, barely stirring when he stopped to listen for anyone following them. By the time they neared the plan B meeting site, Reaver was sure they’d lost the demons—temporarily. Reaver wasn’t naive enough to think they were off the hook. The demons chasing them were only the first wave, the security detail unlucky enough to be guarding the dungeon Harvester was kept in.

Once Satan got wind of this, if he hadn’t already, Reaver and Harvester were going to have legions of minions on their heels.

WARRIOR OF HEAVEN

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he's agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before...to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

ANGEL OF HELL

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she's been doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan's lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld's darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape-her newfound thirst for an angel's blood..

Quick Thought reviews

Sometimes I read a book where I just don't have a lot to say about it. Hence the name quick thought reviews. These will be short and sweet.

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Geneva “Neva” Ross doesn’t want to die. But now that she’s been turned into a werewolf against her will, she’ll do anything to protect her family and friends…even if that means taking her own life.

After witnessing Neva’s leap from a high ledge, Travis Williamson—a Changeling with a dark past—uses his powers to save her life. He feels a connection to the strong-willed woman whose eyes flash that familiar Changeling green. While Neva is hospitalized, Travis risks everything to kidnap her, knowing the approaching full moon will put everyone in jeopardy.

Bickering constantly to hide their growing attraction, Travis and Neva run from the authorities…and from Neva’s sinister sire, Meredith de la Ronde. Meredith delights in creating new shape-shifters and compelling them to do her dark bidding; now Neva must join Meredith’s murderous wolf pack…or die.

Intensely suspenseful with deliciously sexy twists, this paranormal romance—the first in (the title of series)—intertwines sensual passion with an epic, thrilling battle between good and evil.

Neva has no clue what's really happening to her, all she knows is that she is about to change into a monster and that is the last thing she wants. Travis likes to keep to himself and but when he watches Neva jump to her death his wolf pushes him to save her. The romance between the two is OK but it didn't blow me away.

I enjoyed the storyline but the pace was a little off to me and the characters didn't draw me in like I was expecting. I appreciated the little twists and turns the story brought with it. It was a good start to the series but I recommend borrowing before you buy for this one.

I gave it 3/5 stars

 Mine to Tarnish

Mine Book #0.5
ISBN:  149281735X
ISBN13: 9781492817352
Genre: Fantasy

Katherine’s place is the same as any woman’s—on the shelf next to the dresses and bolts of cloth. When she’s sold to a warlock, life grows even bleaker. Her new owner is as old and rancid as he is cruel, driving her to do the unthinkable: run.

Nothing prepared her for being on her own. And she’s definitely unprepared for the warlocks hunting her down. But she must stay one step ahead because if caught, the best she can hope for is death.

Although short MINE TO TARNISH had not problem pulling me in and making me feel invested in the characters. The whole world that Janeal introduces us to interested me. The people, the setting, the story of what the woman go through and what some are willing to do to escape their situations. I cant wait to read more.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Irresistible Magic
Author:Deanna Chase
Release Date: November 8, 2013
Publisher: Bayou Moon Press

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Finding the perfect dress can be hell... especially when a stranger tries to gun you down in broad daylight.

Void agent and magical baker extraordinaire, Willow Rhoswen has been anticipating her first date with Talisen Kavanagh since she was sixteen. After eight years of waiting, there are only two things that can stand in her way--an assassination attempt and a new game-changing drug.

Talisen's invented a new elixir that creates superhumans, ones that can rival vampire strength, and everyone wants it. Including the vampires. With Willow's life on the line, he makes a deal with the devil, while she's forced to accept the always-strings-attached protection from the most notorious vampire organization in New Orleans.

But when Talisen and his drug go missing, Willow will stop at nothing to find him, even if it means working with her vampire-ex, David. With souped-up humans, dangerous vampires, and more questions than answers, Willow has less than twenty-four hours to find him before everything changes forever.

I was so happy with how INFLUENTIAL MAGIC ended that I am sad that I was so disappointing with how IRRESISTIBLE MAGIC ended. The storyline was still interesting but I felt like the relationship aspect of the story totally brought me down. By the end I was asking myself what the point of Talisen and Willow fighting so hard in book 1 was for. The storyline was missing some of the suspense I enjoyed with book 1 as well. Ugh. What a bummer.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Review: Chaos Bound by Rebekah Turner

Chaos Bound
Release Date: December 1, 2013
Publisher: Escape Publishing
ISBN13:  9780857991072
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Netgalley

The long-awaited sequel to Chaos Born takes us back into the Applecross, where Lora faces increasing threats to her survival and her chance at love.

Lora Blackgoat — mercenary and smuggler — has only just recovered from the last threat on her life and hasn’t even begun to sort out the mess of having both a nephilim warrior and a reborn hellspawn as potential lovers. Work should be a refuge, but a job finding missing persons puts her in the crosshairs of a violent gang and a merchant with a taste for blood sport.

Reluctantly, Lora turns to the two men in her life for help. Roman — the nephilim — professes to be her soul mate and turns to her when he feels the darkness of nephilim madness descending. But though Lora is drawn to Roman, it is Seth, ex-lover and reborn hellspawn, who Lora must ultimately ask to protect those she loves. Can she trust Seth to save Roman and her adoptive family, or will this be a fatal mistake?

CHAOS BOUND did a good job of continuing the story that started in CHAOS BORN. I felt like we went in to the story with a good grasp on who Lora is and what she does. The 'powers' that Lora has grown a bit in CHAOS BORN. There was one particular part in the story towards the end that had my mouth dropping open in response to. I really ended up disliking how the men in the story treated Lora. She is so independent and head strong but they are able to make life changing decisions for her and I hated it.

I would have liked to see more of Roman and his background. I also would have liked to see more of Seth, his background and why he was now who he is. I don't feel like I can make a total opinion of him until I get it. Thankfully the love triangle wasn't dramatic or played out too long. I didn't have a preference on who Lora ultimately ended up with but I am happy with how everything played out. I enjoyed the Griorwolf storyline and the new characters that it introduced.

I didn't feel that there was any additional world building in CHAOS BOUND which was OK but I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Applecross. The series so far has been pretty interesting and original and brings lots of action and suspense to the table. I am hoping that there are more books planned in the Chronicles of Applecross series because I feel like we still need more and there is more to be said. Anyone else feel that way?

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Guest Blog: Immortal Revenge by Mary Abshire

UFI welcomes Mary Abshire Author of Immortal Revenge. Thanks for Joining us!!

Favorite scenes to write

Two of my favorite scenes to write are fighting scenes and ones with a lot of dialogue. Both move a story forward quickly. Fighting scenes provide good visuals for readers and dialogue gives a reader a better impression of characters. Dialogue also can help provide details on a back story and be used to build various forms of tension. I love building tension, but I also like creating humor with dialogue.

When I first wrote a fight scene a few years ago I thought it would be difficult. It wasn’t. I visualized the scene and slowed it down in my mind to write it in words. For every action there is a reaction. I wrote my first fight scene in another book and readers continually said it provided a great visual for them. My response? Yay! I did it right. Keep in mind, I’m not an expert but the positive replies boosted my confidence.

In my new novel, Immortal Revenge, my protagonist, Katie, has several fighting scenes. I knew from the beginning she would have a few. She is human and has to fight the bad vampires, which means she has difficult challenges to face. But she is one determined woman. She can kick some ass and speed like crazy. Just ask her best friend and roller skating disco queen, Jules.

The dialogue between Katie and Jules was fun to write. Where Katie is more of a strong-minded person, Jules is more laid back. Except Jules is squeamish and Katie is the opposite. They are alike in some ways but different in many others, which helps these two women form a strong bond. Jules certainly brings light and humor to Katie’s dark and twisted life.

If you’re in the market for a book with action, mystery, suspense and humor, I encourage you to try Immortal Revenge. As a side note, there is some language and violence too.
