About Molle McGregor

HeadshotRevised2-150x150Molle’s writing career started when she was seven and suffered terrible insomnia. Night after night she couldn’t sleep until long after mid-night, only to wake a few hours later. Frustrated with her inability to just go to bed, (and her penchant for sneaking a book and a flashlight under the covers) her grandmother said, “You like to read so much, why don’t you tell yourself a story until you fall asleep.” With this brilliant advice, Molle’s overactive brain was off and running. Now, years later, she’s finally taught herself to sleep, but she’s never stopped telling stories.
When she’s not reading, writing, or staring into space making things up, Molle is getting into trouble with her husband, two sons, two dogs and vicious attack cat in the mountains of North Carolina. She likes to hike, cook, listen to music way too loud, and hang out with her boys. She does not like dusting or emptying the dishwasher.

When no one or nowhere is safe, where do you go to escape the monsters?

In a few short days, 37 year old Emma Rossi’s hard work will finally pay off. She will don her cap and gown and graduate with a degree in nursing, but not before she loses her first patient and is confronted with a new reality. In Cape Coral, Florida, a storm approaches. The dead are coming back to life.

And they’re hungry.

Infection ravages the Eastern Seaboard with alarming speed while attempts to contain the spread of infection fail. Within days, a small pocket of panicked survivors are all that remain of civilization. Fighting to survive the zombie apocalypse alongside her husband Jake and their dog Daphne, Emma comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare.

Relying on snarky wit and sheer determination, she is forced to commit atrocious acts to protect her family and avoid joining the ranks of the undead.

We can't imagine what it would truly be like to live during the zombie apocalypse, but author Shana Festa does a great job giving us an idea. Chaos and destruction rains down on Emma's life as her and her husband set out to escape the rising dead during a category 3 hurricane with no time to prepare.

I'm not really sure what to say about INDUCTION without giving away spoilers. Emma was easy to follow. I would like to think I would be as strong as she was while having to deal with the end of the world as I know it. She has a deep loyalty to those that mean something to her, but is able to get past losing people as well. There are a ton of characters throughout the book that we meet. A LOT are lost of course but I had no trouble following along with who was who.

Everything that happened felt so genuine. The author really did a good job with her world building and keeping things real. You get romance, action, zombies and a great storyline all in one with INDUCTION. I'm very excited to see where this story goes next. If you're looking for a new zombie read you've come to the right place.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview & Giveaway: I'll Call You Alice by Ivy Bateman

UFI welcomes Ivy Bateman Author of I'll Call You Alice. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

My readers, unless they know me, don’t know what I actually look like. The picture I use is a drawing of “Ivy” that my husband did for me when my first ebook was published. It’s a personal choice to hide behind a persona and one that I sometimes struggle with because it does put boundaries on how I can market myself and my work. However, I live in a small town that tends to enjoy gossip and I have a pre-teen who doesn’t need all her friends to know what I do in my spare time. So for now “Ivy” is what I look like.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I enjoy watching British TV shows, acting in community theatre plays, and playing guitar. I have quite the repertoire of parody songs (that I’ve penned) and slow acoustic versions of 80’s hits. Sometimes I spring them on friends at parties. My songs are usually greeted with mild bemusement and laughter.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

On the Nerdist Podcast back in November, 2013, the lovely Tom Hiddleston said that one of the things he enjoys most about being a performer is creating something where once there was nothing. For example you start with idea of putting on a play where there wasn’t a play before and soon, after a lot of work, you have created something from nothing. I feel that way about writing. I love the blank page, the nothing, and creating it into something. It’s very rewarding.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

No, not really. The only thing that must happen for me to feel comfortable with my work is for my husband to read it before I send it in. He is far better at grammar than I am and very good at catching many of my mistakes.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I love Neil Gaiman and Sharon Shinn and while I love most of their work my favorites are Neverwhere and Archangel, respectively.

How would you pitch I’ll Call You Alice to someone who has not heard of it before?

Do you like “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”? Do you like the idea of having a tea party in the woods with three hot guys? If you answer yes or even perhaps to either of these questions that I strong suggest you read “I’ll Call You Alice”.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that “I’ll Call You Alice” is set in?

It’s set in modern times and takes place in a bistro and the woods. It’s short, sweet, and kind of hot. Much like how I enjoy my tea!

Do you have a favorite scene in “I’ll Call you Alice”?

My favorite scene is probably when Val arrives at the bistro and has a brief, but strange encounter with a man in a very silly top hat.

Which character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I really enjoyed writing all of the characters, especially the Mad Hatter character. The part I found the most difficult was coming with a fairly even amount of dialogue for all of the characters. There are four of them and it’s not a long story, but I wanted each of them to have their say in a way that the reader will feel they know them, at least enough for the story.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I really hope to have a holiday story come out at the end of the year with Breathless Press, but if that’s to be the case, I need to get writing and very soon. If you’d like to read my stories, they’re all available on the Breathless Press website.

Thanks very much for having me on today!

Happy Reading,
Ivy Bateman

Once upon a time a girl named Val was late for her very important blind date.

After not meeting up with her blind date at a local bistro, Val finds herself dressed up as Alice and attending the Mad Hatter's Tea Party in the woods with three sexy guys. Seeking an adventure, Val dives into the world of fantasy and does what anyone in her situation would do: a foursome!

Excerpt:

"You said in your dating profile you were seeking adventure," said the over-excited mouse. Val suddenly realized he was the waiter who had first served her at the restaurant. "You stated," he continued, "that your life was dull and that you were seeking someone who could give you something new. So...ta-dah! We are the someones." He paused for effect. "We want to give you new somethings!"

Val rose from the table and backed away. The drugged tea was gone from her system, but she stood up too fast and had to steady herself on a chair. "My profile? You are all my blind date?"

"That’s right," they said in unison.

She didn't know whether she was flattered, or horrified. "You—I should leave. You drugged me, sort of kidnapped me, and are calling me Alice because I said I wanted adventure. This is just a little too bizarre for me. I think I'll go back to my dull life." She started to walk out of the woods, but stopped. Val had no idea where she was. She could chance it and find the main road. If luck was on her side she could find her way back to town. "And then what?" she muttered. "Go home and pine once again for a life less ordinary?"

Instead, she turned back to the tea party. The three of them were watching her, waiting patiently for her to make up her mind. Val bit her lip. What should she do? The whole scene laid out in front of her was surreal and strange; something out of a story. Surprisingly though, it wasn't scary. Yes, she was stuck in the woods with three odd, but undeniably attractive men who had gone to a lot of trouble to give her a blind date that would really stick in her memory. She was touched by their showmanship, but was it too weird?

She studied each of them in turn. The Mad Hatter was grinning, well madly. His eyes were full of mischief and were quite sexy. The White Rabbit had beautifully muscled legs. The bike shorts were showing them off, and what was tucked inside of them, nicely. The Mouse was staring openly at her breasts. The dress and apron did more to showcase her body than hide it and he was definitely enjoying the view.

Val had to admit she was extremely flattered by their attention. They seemed very sincere and eager for her company. Plus they were charming and looked completely harmless. She wasn't getting creepy vibes off any of them. It probably wouldn't hurt to stay and experience a unique date. Yes, this was more out there than she would ever have thought she would be a part of, but it was new and it was an adventure which was what she'd been seeking when she signed herself up on that dating site. Why not see where this led?

"Are you going to stay at our tea party?" asked the Mouse.

Val took a deep breath. As she let it out she nodded and said, "Yes, but I must be mad."
The Mad Hatter giggled loudly. "We're all mad here, Alice! Oh, I can't believe I actually got to say that! How wonderful!" He leaned across the table and slapped five with the White Rabbit.

"So," she said as she laughed along with them and sat back down at the table. "What did you have in mind?"

All three men cheered, but it was the Mad Hatter who told Val the plan. "We'd like to play a game."
"What kind of game? I'm not all that good at games."

The Mouse tittered. "Actually, that's not a problem for us. We were rather hoping you wouldn't be."

Release Day Blast: Flight From Hell by Yasmine Galenorn

FFHBlastBanner1
"Yasmine Galenorn creates a world I never want to leave" - Sherrilyn Kenyon

Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld series is long running, best selling, and has unique, well developed world building. This rich environment has more than one story to tell... and it's time for a new one to begin.

FLIGHT FROM HELL IS OUT TODAY!!!
FLIGHT FROM HELL is the novella bridge-piece that loosely links Yasmine’s existing Otherworld series with her upcoming Fly By Night series. To help celebrate the release of the novella, Yasmine has a contest happening on her site, and today is the LAST DAY to enter!!! Click HERE for prize details and instructions for entering.

When Carter, half demon, comes to Menolly and her sisters, asking for their help, they think he's just had a tiff with Shimmer, his blue dragon girlfriend.

But after talking to Alex Radcliffe, the owner of the Fly By Night Magical Investigations Agency where Shimmer works, they suspect that she has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Alex's. Now, Alex joins forces with the D'Artigo sisters in a desperate race to find Shimmer before Julian, a powerful vampire from Alex's past with a grudge to settle, can use the dragon to wreak havoc on Seattle as revenge.

Next summer, in the Fly By Night series, we'll meet new characters and have new adventures, but each book will have Yasmine's signature depth and edge. Answering questions about the similarities and differences between the two series, Yasmine recently posted this on her blog:
  1. They ARE both set in the same universe/same city/same time.
  2. The Fly By Night Series is NOT just another venue for the D’Artigo Sisters. The focus will be on Alex and Shimmer—there will be crossover of minor characters, but the two series are definitely their own and Fly By Night belongs to Alex and Shimmer.
  3. The Fly By Night Series will be from Shimmer’s viewpoint, and she and Alex hang out in vastly different circles than the D’Artigo sisters overall.
  4. FLIGHT FROM HELL is an OTHERWORLD novella that introduces Alex and Shimmer to you—here, the characters do interact but the Fly By Night Series will be focused on the Fly By Night world.
  5. Fly By Night is more of a mystery/thriller series. I’ll give you these spoilers:
  • Alex and Shimmer are not privy to the demonic war going on.
  • The FBN books will be more standalone. While the characters will evolve, there’s not all that much of an overwhelming series arc.
  • The FBN gang is a little more humorous, though the series is not really ‘lighter’ than Otherworld.
Click on the FLIGHT FROM HELL cover above to see its info page on Yasmine's site (with excerpt and playlist). And each of the covers below will take you to their individual pages. Now is a perfect time to get to know the Otherworld series, or catch up where you left off!!

Review: Ante Up: Sin City Collectors Novella by Amanda Carlson

Ante Up: Sin City Collectors Novella
Release Date: August 18, 2014

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Diesel Jones is a shifter who has issues with the moon, but he quickly finds that Sofia Cabrera, a clever witch who just moved in to town, is his only hope to reach his goal of becoming a Collector. When they pair up to take down an incubus, she not only saves his life, but wins his heart in the process…

The romances that are involved in this novella series are fast and furious, but still give you the details you crave from a full length novel. We met Sofia in ACES WILD while she was on the losing team, but ANTE UP shows us a whole new side to her. Diesel is a shifter with issues that wants to be a part of the Sin City Collectors and he's finally getting the chance. Little does he know that the witch he craves will be the one that helps him land the job.

Both characters were very interesting to follow. Sofia is a very powerful witch and has a great personality. Diesel is an alpha male type that really takes care of those he loves. Sparks are apparent between the two from the first chapter and there relationship developed nicely. There was no fighting feelings in ANTE UP.

Amanda's Sin City is growing nicely and although each book only gives us a glimpse, all the pieces are fitting together to give us the bigger picture. I continued to love Nevada and Jake from ACES WILD, I'm glad they were a part of ANTE UP and I can't wait to see what both couples will contribute to the next novella which I am positive will feature the sexy incubus and playboy shifter we met.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Forget Me Not by Shawn Martin

UFI welcomes Shawn Martin Author of Forget Me Not. Thanks for Joining us!!

The Dark
by
Shawn Martin

An annoying question has followed me around most of my life: Are you afraid of the dark? To keep from seeming like a total wimp, I've always answered that haunting question with my head held high and a resounding No. But I'm not sure I was ever really honest with myself.

So, what is darkness? Some people say darkness is the absence of light, when there are no photons reflecting off an object and the eyeball has nothing to see. Wham, bam... you have darkness. I say darkness isn't an absence. Darkness is a presence. Darkness is a thing.

Darkness looms. It is the color of night. It shades the storm clouds. Darkness is the blanket the monster wears in your closet. It's the quiet in the night. It sets the stage for your dreams and nightmares. Darkness makes your heart race faster, especially when the wind blows.

Darkness is indeed a thing, robbing you of one of your five senses, leaving you vulnerable. Vulnerable to the predators who see and sense you as prey. Sure, you can rely on and even hone the other four senses. But let's face it, a heightened sense of smell or taste doesn't even come close to making up for your loss of sight. You're vulnerable and scared, and it's all because of the dark. The mind believes that physical beasts or ethereal demons are chasing your body, hungering for your flesh and soul. So yeah, the darkness scares you. At least it should. Until you surrender yourself to the night, accept your fate, and embrace mortality.

In Chapter 1 of Forget Me Not, Aileen McCormick admits she'd once been afraid of the dark, but she can't remember exactly when that was. Between you (the reader) and me (the author), it was before she had fallen in love with Addison Wake, a phantom who is both shadow and flesh, who has been cursed for eternity. Living a little closer to the darkness makes a person fear it less and less, I suppose. At least that was the case for Aileen.

By the way, when night comes and darkness storms in like the four horsemen, the stars do little to comfort a tortured soul. Pity, really.

So, as the sun goes down tonight and the darkness wraps its arms around you, ask yourself if you are afraid. Or have you surrendered yourself to the night, accepted your fate, and embraced mortality. Aileen did, but it will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Excerpt From
 Chapter 1
I couldn’t remember the last time I had been afraid of the dark. It seemed like a lifetime ago, when shadows and demons consumed me at night, when the end of the world was but a breath away. That was all before I met Addison.

From the very moment I literally fell into his arms, I had fallen hopelessly in love with him. Hopelessly, carelessly, eternally in love with him. And he loved me back.

Addison Wake had become my entire life, my reason for living. I breathed in his love and exhaled his name. My heart beat a passionate rhythm to which only he marched. He danced into my dreams, stealing me away into the stars at the witching hour. Since he had come back to me we had been inseparable.

The last amber leaves of autumn waved goodbye to the worst and best year of my life. The year I lost my home, my friends, everything I thought I needed to live. The year I discovered a grandmother I hardly knew. The year I found new friends. The year I fell in love.

The calendar gloated that Christmas was less than a month away, but who cared? I looked forward to the first day of winter. Or rather the longest night of the year. Ever since finding out Santa was just a figment of my parents’ imagination, I didn’t have much use for the yuletide. But I had always loved that long and wonderful night. Addison had already set a date for that night, promising to take me to an air show in the day and onto the rooftop at night to teach me the constellations.

It was kind of embarrassing, but I had never really learned the stars. Sure, I could spot the Big Dipper and hardly ever mistook the moon for a comet. But that was the extent of my celestial knowledge. Most of my time had been spent looking down rather than up, and I regretted that. Just one more regret in the long list I had been working on in my seventeen years. But all that was changing, and Addison was helping me one regret at a time.

To say I appreciated everything he had done for me would be an understatement. He taught me how to drive a stick. He trusted me with his deepest, darkest secrets. He saved my life. He fell in love with me, maybe even more than I had fallen in love with him. If that was possible.

Mere words could do no justice for how I felt about Addison. But that didn’t stop me from trying to tell him, or show him. I poured my heart out into haiku almost daily. I swirled his initials into the thighs of my worn jeans in three colors of permanent ink. I learned to say “I love you” in twenty-one languages.

My most recent declaration of love cost me an entire paycheck. I purchased a star. Not the Hollywood kind starlets walked across in stilettos. An actual star, in outer space, where no man has boldly gone before.

Bonnie Fay and Nicola had completely different reactions when I confessed what I had done. Bonnie Fay wrinkled her nose and squinted at me, forcing the kind of smile that told me I was lame. “Sounds kinda hokey,” she had said in her southern drawl. “Sugar, if you’re gonna tease him with something he can’t have, don’t let it be a star.”

Nicola, the polar opposite to everything calm and conforming, had a completely different reaction. She ached a sigh, crossed her hands over her heart, and fell backwards onto my bed. “That is just so…” She took a breath and clicked the heals of her combat boots. I prayed she’d say something other than “hokey.” “So… romantic.” Then she wiped away a hint of her sentimentality before it had the chance to smear her dark eye make-up. She had spent too long applying deadly Goth to have it ruined by a girly tear.

Yes, I bought my boyfriend a star. It was a little star – I didn’t make that much money – cleverly hidden in the Scorpius constellation. The website informed me the little speck could be seen near the horizon using a telescope the size of a small skyscraper. But the heavenly body, now and forever known as “Addison Wake,” was indeed there. It was my gift to him, a little piece of eternity that would smile down upon us every night until the stars all went out.

Okay, it was a little hokey.

But what could I have given to Addison Wake? He wasn’t exactly like the other boys at Redcliff High. To be perfectly clear, he was nothing at all like anyone on this mortal world. Addison was a phantom, a fugitive from the netherworld, casually walking among the living as shadowflesh. He willed his dark, mysterious ether into the tall, lean embodiment of perfection. An immortal soul, yet vulnerable shadowflesh.

And no, I didn’t need my head examined… or maybe I did.

Addison was completely wrong for me, completely wrong for any living, breathing girl who had a fondness for staying alive. The more I knew we shouldn’t be together, the more I was drawn to him. Like a knot, the harder a person tried to pull it apart the tighter it got.

To show my love for Addison, I had to think of something as unique, something as ageless as he. Haiku hadn’t cut it. And it wasn’t like I could burn him a CD of my favorite music and expect it to mean anything in a year, or a decade, or a century. But a star, it would be forever.

And when that long and wonderful night finally came and Addison showed me the constellations, I would surprise him with his star, pointing to the part of the sky where the tiny speck was supposed to be.

I had no idea how he would react. Maybe he’d shrug or look at me as if I had lost my mind. Or maybe he’d arch one eyebrow higher than the other over his smoky blue eyes and kiss me. It would be cold, December nights get that way, so he would undoubtedly drape his leather flight jacket over my shoulders and wrap me in his strong arms, and I would kiss him back like I had never kissed him before, like I would never kiss him again. And perhaps that would be the night. The night.

I no longer feared the darkness. As a matter of fact, I looked forward it. The longest, darkest night of the year waited for me, and that should have been my happily ever after. But fate can be a funny, cruel thing.
