Guest Blog & Giveaway: Haven by Celia Breslin

UFI welcomes Celia Breslin Author of Havin. Thanks for Joining us!!

Haven’s Soundtrack

No doubt about it, music feeds my Muse.

For Haven, she required daily doses of industrial rock, techno (big beat and minimal), electro, breakbeat, and house. Sounds loud, right? Well, Haven IS a dance club. *grins* And my Muse likes to shake it on the virtual dance floor.

Muse required techno and house music to paint club scenes, hard-driving big beat techno and breakbeat for action sequences, and a little industrial rock for the scenes in between. Of course, she also demanded silence from time to time, to listen to the winds snap around my house, swirling fog over my roof and the nearby hills... And poignant moments required a softer, gentler type of tune...

Haven’s Playlist:

* Industrial rock - Nine Inch Nails (NIN) - The Fragile, With Teeth
* Big beat techno - The Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation, The Fat of the Land, Invaders Must Die
* Minimal techno - Justin Maxwell, John Tejada
* Electro - Bass Kittens - Inside the Electron
* Electro - Volsoc - Compuphonic
* Breakbeat - Bass Kittens - Four Things I Hate About You
* Breakbeat - Meat Beat Manifesto - Actual Sounds and Voices, Satyricon
* House - DJs Stacy Burket and Steve Lawler
* Kate Bush - The Sensual World

Song Sampler:
I’ve made a HAVEN playlist on Spotify -

Enjoy!

Review: The Human by Keary Taylor

The Human
Author:Keary Taylor
Release Date: June 18, 2013
Publisher: Self Published
ISBN:   9780615827
Genre: Dystopian

The city of New Eden is cleared, but it won’t stay that way forever. The Bane continue to advance in horrific ways that will wipe humanity from the face of the Earth. A storm is coming, one none of them could have dared imagine.

When a group of outsiders come to the city, everyone is on edge. They have too many questions and not enough answers about where they are from or what they want. Just because they are human doesn’t mean they can be trusted.

Eve made a choice–one that could have deadly repercussions. Desperate hearts bring about desperate actions. Now she must make another decision as her world continues to crumble: come to terms with who she really is, or risk her sanity. She thought she had unlocked all the secrets from her past, but there are truths still buried that leave her questioning what is real and what is not.

It really surprised me when I ended up liking book 1 EDEN as much as I did. I was really excited to read more about Eve and the other characters from the series.

I hate giving away spoilers so I will stick to my feelings on some things without giving away details. It was extremely sad to read what Eve was put through for some of the book. I don't know how she was strong enough to get through it but I am glad it didn't change her as a person.  I loved the addition of one character in particular. They will be a great asset to Eve's allies. I was shocked at some of the information that was revealed, disgusted with characters that I thought were on Eve's side and more in love with Avian then I was in book 1. There is plenty of action, tons of twists and situations that will keep you on your toes at every turn.

The ending definitely has me wondering what is going on. I can't wait to get my hand on book 3 THE EVE.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Review: Affliction by Laurell K. Hamilton

Affliction
Release Date: July 2, 2013

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Some zombies are raised. Others must be put down. Just ask Anita Blake.

Before now, she would have considered them merely off-putting, never dangerous. Before now, she had never heard of any of them causing human beings to perish in agony. But that’s all changed.

Micah’s estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”

Anita makes her living off of zombies—but these aren’t the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes…

Where will it stop?
Even Anita Blake doesn’t know.

I really enjoyed the last two installments of the Anita Blake series but AFFLICTION fell short to me.  This is a big book so when you see it know that only 1/2 of it actually comes close to being enjoyable. I did like the main storyline. Zombies are always fun but they take on a new life in AFFLICTION.

The constant spread out and over explained dialogue was annoying. I seriously skipped through 1/2 of each chapter in the book. Something important is going on yet people have to sit and have chapter long conversations about their relationship or other miniscule things. Hello! Crisis going on!

It was fun to witness Micah's family. The whole meet and greet was nothing like I (or the characters) thought it would be. It was a neat surprise. As usual the local law enforcement looks down at Anita and her men. They as usual treat Anita like a whore and we have to listen to her and them banter about it for a while until she does something crazy and they finally see she is not like her reputation makes her out to be. Same story different town. I loved that Edward was once again in the book. He is a great character, I always enjoy his dialogue. Am I the only one that felt he is being set up to sleep with Anita? I was getting that vibe but it could just be me seeing things that are not there so I would love to know if anyone else felt that way.

Sigh. I'm not sure what else to say. I miss the early Anita books and thought we were getting back to those but I'm not sure after AFFLICTION.

I gave it 2.5/5 stars
