Interview + Giveaway: Her Black Heart by A.J. Norris

UFI welcomes Author A.J. Norris. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I work full-time in addition to writing. It’s like having two jobs, one that I love and one I tolerate.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I love going to the movies. Nothing replaces the big screen for me. Watching movies in your living room doesn’t give you the same feel as seeing it huge, especially movies like the Avengers or Star Trek and Star Wars.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Making stuff up which is calming to me as I tend to think too much.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I wouldn’t say I have any certain routine. I almost never edit until I’m done with the first draft of a MS.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

My favorite authors are J.R. Ward and Gena Showalter.

How would you pitch Her Black Heart, book two of the Dark Amulet Series to someone who has not heard of it before?

This book is about a girl who is murdered for an amulet she possesses. She’s obsessed with getting it back at any cost, even death doesn’t stop her. A fallen angel is sent to help her find the people who stole it from her, except she and the angel have different agendas. Oh, and they are hot for one another.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that the Dark Amulet Series is set in?

The books take place is my version of Heaven and Hell and on Earth, so far in Detroit and Chicago. I’ve only seen a small part of Arcadia (Heaven), where the angels live. The place where humans go after their death is forbidden to enter for most of the angels. Hell or Netherworld is hot and nasty. However, the natives of the realm have a cooperative society, so there is no jealously among them or a competition for control. The natives leave that to the current Ruler.

Do you have a favorite scene in Her Black Heart?
There is a scene where the main characters have a turning point in their relationship in the woods. Here’s a little tidbit. I don’t want to give too much away.

“She’s gone,” Raz said.
“Great. You chased her away.” She threw her hands up. “I hate you.” They were half an arm’s length away from one another.
“No you don’t.”
“Yes. I. Do. I could kill you.”
“Do what you have to.” He slipped his hand around the back of her neck and weaved his fingers into her hair. The fire in his eyes lit like mini torches. Her lips parted and he licked his lips.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Stop looking at me like that. I hate you.”
“Like what?”
“Like you want to either kill me or sex me up.” He smashed his lips to hers, the kiss a juxtaposition of reverent and demanding. They remained fused together as he backed her into a wide-trunked tree.
“Maybe it’s both,” he said against her mouth.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I’m currently working on the third book in the series and I’m struggling with writing the heroine. See doesn’t like to cooperate, very frustrating for me and the hero. My favorite is a demon that stutters. He’s killed a few people in the third book but he’s loveable and my favorite.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I have a romantic suspense called the Tattoo Killer coming out October 18, 2016. And I just started a new paranormal series which is a cross between Ghost and the Sixth Sense.

Her Black Heart
The Dark Amulet #2
Amazon
Julia Dunham is a monster. Her heart has been consumed by an amulet meant to create terror…

As a young girl, Julia received an amulet tainted by Abaddon, the Supreme Demon of the Netherworld, and the sigil slowly corrupts her heart. The power of the deceptive pendant gains the attention of her former employer, Maurice. He sends thugs to murder Julia and steal the amulet.

Immediately upon her death, Abaddon traps her on Earth, leaving her obsessed with retrieving the amulet. Julia must find a way to overcome her deadly obsession or be responsible for unleashing thousands of demons on humanity.

Ra’zael the Guardian fell for the wrong girl and lost his wings. He isn’t about to let it happen again…

Ra’zael is tasked with the mission of helping Julia overcome her compulsion to locate the amulet, though he’s reluctant to get involved. But as a fallen angel, he doesn’t have much choice—it’s the only way to earn back his wings. His fall from grace is still fresh in his mind, but despite his best effort, his passion for Julia can’t be ignored. He has to save her from herself.

Julia must make her own choices. Redeem herself or condemn Earth and her soul forever…

Despite Ra’zael’s warnings, Julia tracks Maurice and the amulet to Chicago. She has every reason to kill Maurice. He murdered her. He stole from her. Spending eternity in the Netherworld might be worth watching him die.

Ra’zael knows she still has goodness left inside her…he’s seen it. Julia just has to find it and fight the evil of…

Her Black Heart.
Excerpt:

“What am I going to do with you?” he’d said.
Julia could think of a lot of things Raz could do to her. “You can do anything you want to me.”
Ra’zael smiled and looked heavenward. A heady chuckle left his throat. “Anything? You may want to reconsider that statement.”
All sorts of scenarios danced around inside her mind, things involving rope and leather. Fantasies, yes, but fun to think about. “Uhhh…”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” The angel laughed quietly. She eased back into the seat and decided to change the subject; after all, he’d just taken her virginity. No sense in being greedy.
“Why are your wings gray?” she asked. “Do you have Abaddon’s poison in you?”
“Taint. I never allowed him to kiss me, and as far as I know he didn’t.” He shrugged. “Wings get dingy for lots of reasons. Probably because I was in Netherworld so long. I did bad shit.”
“Yeah, but to bad people, right?”
“Mostly.”
“Like what?”
Raz made an aggravated sounding growl. “Arghh…Julia. What’s this obsession you have with wanting to know the specifics? I thought I was a demon and acted accordingly.”
“Just curious.” She shoved her hands inside the front pouch pocket of her sweatshirt. The wad of cash from the Demon Ruler burned her palms. Julia took deep breaths as guilt panged her black heart. She focused on Raz’s chest and tried to match his breathing pattern—steady and rhythmic. Only his inhales and exhales were too long and the train car started spinning.
“You all right?”
Her head bobbled. “Hm…wha…”
“I asked if you were all right.”
“F-Fine…don’t I l-look all righ…” Julia’s words slurred and trailed off.
She woke up cradled in his arms. For someone who didn’t like to be touched, he certainly did a lot of touching. Not being able to resist, she reached up with her hand to cup his cheek. He veered his head away.
“Don’t,” he snapped.
Her bottom lip quivered. Why did she care? She was a monster.
He looked over his shoulder at the chair next to him. “Sorry,” he mumbled.
“What was that…that sounded like an apology,” Julia said softly. He guided her head to his chest and she sighed.
“What’s going to happen after we find the amulet?” My amulet.
“What do you mean?” he asked and relaxed his head back on the seat. “Let’s worry about getting the necklace back first then we’ll talk afterward.”
I can’t talk later; I have to kill you.

Review: The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee

The Thousandth Floor
Release Date: August 30, 2016
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN:   0062418599
ISBN13: 9780062418593
Genre: Fantasy
Review Copy Source: Edelweiss
New York City as you’ve never seen it before. A thousand-story tower stretching into the sky. A glittering vision of the future, where anything is possible—if you want it enough.

Welcome to Manhattan, 2118.

A hundred years in the future, New York is a city of innovation and dreams. But people never change: everyone here wants something…and everyone has something to lose.

Leda Cole’s flawless exterior belies a secret addiction—to a drug she never should have tried and a boy she never should have touched.

Eris Dodd-Radson’s beautiful, carefree life falls to pieces when a heartbreaking betrayal tears her family apart.

Rylin Myers’s job on one of the highest floors sweeps her into a world—and a romance—she never imagined…but will her new life cost Rylin her old one?

Watt Bakradi is a tech genius with a secret: he knows everything about everyone. But when he’s hired to spy by an upper-floor girl, he finds himself caught up in a complicated web of lies.

And living above everyone else on the thousandth floor is Avery Fuller, the girl genetically designed to be perfect. The girl who seems to have it all—yet is tormented by the one thing she can never have.

Debut author Katharine McGee has created a breathtakingly original series filled with high-tech luxury and futuristic glamour, where the impossible feels just within reach. But in this world, the higher you go, the farther there is to fall….

There are quite a bit of characters and POVs in THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR and I don't want to bore you with going over them all, but I will say that we DO find out who falls in the opening chapter before the book is over. I think that is important to say, because there are a lot of pages and story to get through and at some times, you might be impatient to find out. DON'T skip to the end, the characters and story are important.

My biggest issue with THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR was the pace, it was slooooow. The story goes in a lot of different directions and although I LIKED the story, it was sometimes really hard not to skip some parts of it. I refrained from doing that and the story was better for it. Every characters and event ended up being pretty important to the overall story.

The ending was bit anticlimactic and it felt unfinished to me. Even having said that, I really enjoyed the story and the characters—some more than others. I have no choice to read book two because I have to see how things turn out.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Promo + Early Review + GIveaway: Dragons Against Them by Kyra Jacobs

Dragons Against Them

Publisher: Self-Published

Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

Blood is thicker than water…but can it melt a heart of ice?

Adelaide Miller gave up everything she knows to remain in Prince Zayne Godfrey’s alternate reality and assume her rightful place as eldest princess in the rival kingdom of Forath.

For an independent, free-spirited woman, however, royal life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it’s downright smothering. Especially since the vengeful Rosalind has gone AWOL.

Zayne is eager to wed Princess Addie—but their fathers seem more intent on keeping them apart. The longer Rosalind goes missing, the more suspicious each monarch becomes that the other is guilty of foul play.

But both kingdoms may soon face a strong, new rival intent on gaining power foretold by an ancient prophecy. To protect their chance at happily ever after, Zayne and Addie must partner with unlikely allies to save the one person intent on destroying them both.

But victory will not come without a price, and in the end, someone may have to pay—in blood.

After the ending of DRAGONS AMONG THEM I was left wondering what would happen between Addie and Zayne, so it was a no-brainer when I had the chance to snag a review copy of DRAGONS AGAINST THEM.

I'm not usually a fan of multiple POVs in my books, but Jacobs did a good job of making me feel like I was getting the full story even when I was in another person's head. Addie and Zayne were just as interesting to me in book two as I found them in book one, but DRAGONS AGAINST THEM covered a lot more than there budding relationship. We were introduced to a whole new aspect of the overall storyline and new characters jumped into the mix. I can't say that I loved everything about book two, but I liked it enough that I was easily able to stay in the story and I actually ended up liking a character that I hated in DRAGONS AMONG THEM.

I'm very interested in seeing where things will go next after the ending of DRAGONS AGAINST THEM, and not just for Adelaide and Zayne. There are still a lot of possible ways that the series can go with book three. I have a lot of questions and really want to dive deeper into some of the things that were prophesied in DRAGONS AGAINST THEM.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Excerpt:

“…How long has it been since you stretched your wings, went on a leisurely flight?”
Tristan bristled. “I am unfamiliar with your customs in Edana, Prince Zayne, but here in Forath, those responsible for protecting our kingdom have little time for leisure.”
“A pity, that.”
“How so?”
Zayne bent to press a kiss upon his betrothed’s hair. Its silken strands tickled his chin, and her scent washed over him anew. His enjoyment in the continued battle of wits with her prick of a brother waned and was replaced by the desire for a new activity. One that involved himself, Adelaide, and far less clothing.
As if reading his mind, she shifted against him, teasing his length. Had they been alone, the temptation to take her now, here in the stables, might have been too great to resist. The thought of her naked body stretched out willingly beneath him spurred Zayne to cease his battle of words and hasten their retreat.
“Because to fly often is not only good for the soul, but also serves to strengthen your wings and keep your battle skills keen.”
“Of course. But as Adelaide cannot fly, she need not join you. It is her studies that should be my sister’s primary focus prior to your upcoming wedding.”
“Then I shall tutor her on your family’s lineage while we are away, as I am well versed in the subject.” He leaned down farther, pressing a kiss to the hollow beneath her ear. She shivered in his arms as he murmured, “A few hours is all it should take.”
“It won’t take anywhere near that long,” Addie whispered.
Her breathy, musical voice spoke to the beast within. Three days was all that had passed since he’d seen her last, yet it seemed an eternity. His bed had felt empty, her soft skin achingly absent alongside his. Zayne took several more steps toward the door, guiding her with him. Tristan, however, continued to follow.
"I have every confidence in your tutoring skills, Prince Zayne, but my father issued strict orders that Princess Adelaide shall not leave the grounds unaccompanied."
Addie tensed in Zayne’s arms. Of course a decree limiting her travels would create such a reaction in his free-spirited nymph. When they first met a few short weeks ago, she had been traveling alone. To now be restricted by King Jarin’s rules was undoubtedly difficult for her.
Ah, but he had ways to help ease her mind from these anxieties. Ways his body craved as much as the next breath. “An understandable decree, and one I pledge to uphold as her royal escort.”
“That is Blackstone’s assignment,” Tristan said. “Not yours.”
“Please, Tristan,” said Addie.
“Is Blackstone no longer your personal guard, then, my lord?” asked Zayne.
Tristan’s eyes narrowed and remained fixed upon him, ignoring his sister’s plea. “He has been assigned to protect the royal family, Adelaide included.”
“A difficult task when the prince and princess are in different locations, is it not?”
“Indeed. But as we are both here at the present, I feel he is quite capable of offering protection to us both.”
“I have no doubt in his abilities.” Zayne gripped Adelaide tighter with one hand and shoved the stable’s rear door wide with his other. “Unfortunately for you, the present has now passed.”
As he summoned his transformation, the air around them began to whip and swirl, masking their escape in a cloud of dust and straw. The beast within wasn’t to be denied, and not a soul in Forath Castle could stop them. In an instant, they were airborne, Adelaide safe and secure in his taloned grasp.

Unraveled
Elemental Assassins #15
Amazon  BN  Books-A-Million  Google PlaiTunes  Kobo
After the shocking revelations of the previous book, Bitter Bite, the world of Ashland’s become even more sinister, and Gin Blanco (aka Ashland’s most fearsome assassin, the Spider) no longer knows who—or what—she can count on. Only one thing is for certain: danger and new enemies await Gin in Unraveled, Book 15 in the New York Times bestselling Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series that RT Book Reviews calls “unbeatable entertainment!”

What could go wrong when you’re trying to unravel a decades-old conspiracy?

As the current queen of the Ashland underworld, you would think that I, Gin Blanco, would know all about some secret society controlling things from behind the scenes. I might be the Spider, the city’s most fearsome assassin, but all my Ice and Stone elemental magic hasn’t done me a lick of good in learning more about “the Circle”. Despite my continued investigations, the trail’s gone as cold as the coming winter.

So when Finnegan Lane, my foster brother, gets word of a surprising inheritance, we figure why not skip town for someplace less dangerous for a few days? That place: Bullet Pointe, a fancy hotel resort complex plus Old West theme park that Finn now owns lock, stock, and barrel. At first, all the struttin’ cowboys and sassy saloon girls are just hokey fun. But add in some shady coincidences and Circle assassins lurking all around, and vacationing becomes wilder—and deadlier—than any of us expected.

Good thing this assassin brought plenty of knives to the gunfight …
UNRAVELED (Elemental Assassin #15) | Jennifer Estep | Pocket Books | $7.99 | 400 pages | August 30, 2016 | ISBN: 978-1501142215

Excerpt #9:

We sat in the van, watching our mirrors. Sure enough, a minute later, that same SUV cruised by us again. Only this time, the vehicle didn’t have its headlights, or even its parking lights, on. It pulled over to the curb and stopped—right in front of the mansion we were watching.

“Hello,” I murmured. “What do we have here?”

The doors opened, and two people got out of the front of the SUV, both wearing long black trench coats akin to Phillip’s. They were giants, each one roughly seven feet tall with thick shoulders and broad chests, most likely they were the muscle and bodyguards for whoever was in the back of the vehicle.

Sure enough, one of the giants opened a rear door, and a shorter, thinner figure emerged, also sporting a black trench coat. This person also wore a black fedora and had a matching scarf wrapped around their neck. I peered through my binoculars, but the person’s back was to me, so I couldn’t see their face, although from the size and gait, I did get the impression that it was a woman.

“Some late-night visitors here for a hush-hush meeting with our old friend?” Phillip drawled.

“Maybe.”

One of the giants squatted down. At first, I wondered what he was doing, but then the woman in the fedora and scarf ran over to the giant, who hoisted her up into the air. Ms. Fedora grabbed hold of the top of the iron gate and swung her legs up and over it with all the grace of an Olympic gymnast. Landing deftly on her feet in the yard on the other side, she started striding toward the mansion with graceful purpose.

I cursed, realizing that I was about to lose my one and only lead on the Circle. I’d considered the possibility that someone might come here looking for him, but part of me hadn’t thought that it would actually happen since everything else I’d tried to track down the members of the Circle had been a dead end so far. This was shaping up to be the rare stakeout that ended in action.

“Not a meeting,” I growled. “They’re here to kill him.”

Good thing this assassin brought plenty of knives to the gunfight …

As we all know by now, nothing is ever easy for Gin, even when she's on vacation and I loved every moment of watching her fight off bad guys and save her family and friends in UNRAVELED.

There isn't a huge amount of action in UNRAVELED abut the final fight scene is pretty epic. The location was a tad bit corny, but Estep totally pulled it off with her fabulous world building and attention catching storyline.

We don't get our normal dose of Sophia and Jo-Jo and I did miss them, but it was nice seeing Gin interact with some of the lesser secondary characters as well as a new ally that comes off cranky at first but totally grew on me by the end. I actually wouldn't mind seeing more of him in the future.  Another great thing about UNRAVELED is that we learned a little more about Gin's mom.

I always enjoy me some Gin Blanco and gang and UNRAVELED was no exception. I hope this series never ends, but I know when it does—hopefully after many many more books— it will go out with a bang.

Interview + Giveaway: All the Wounds in Shadow by Anise Eden

UFI welcomes Author Anise Eden. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I keep a running list of epitaphs to choose from when my time comes (hopefully not for another 50-60 years, but hey, I’m a planner). The current front runner is “NO REGERTS” (sic). I first saw it online in a photo of a tattoo, and think it would be brilliant chiseled in granite.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I’m really into simple pleasures, like spending time with loved ones, especially over a good meal and a game of Scrabble. I’m also an avid reader and binge-watcher of Netflix. When I venture out, I gravitate toward live theater and music of all kinds.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Can I pick two? ☺ The first part is when I’m “in the flow,” and the writing comes effortlessly. It’s almost like being in a meditative state. The second part is collaboration on editing. I absolutely love getting feedback and using it to shape my books into the best possible versions of themselves.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Until recently, I could only write while sitting at my desktop computer. Lately, though, I’ve been experimenting with semi-reclining on the couch or the bed with my laptop to write cozier, more romantic scenes. I still want to be at my desk, though, to write action scenes or more cerebral bits.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I find myself drawn to stories that, like The Healing Edge Series, blend the contemporary and the paranormal. I’ve been reading Kelley Armstrong’s Cainsville novels, Christine Feehan’s GhostWalker novels, and Rosanna Leo’s Gemini Island Shifter series. Two of my favorite books are by the authors who introduced me to urban fantasy/paranormal, Charlaine Harris’s Dead Until Dark and Diana Rowland’s My Life as a White Trash Zombie.

How would you pitch All the Wounds in Shadow and The Healing Edge Series to someone who has not heard of it before?

The Healing Edge Series blends the supernatural and the psychological, introducing a charismatic group of alternative healers as it follows main characters Cate and Ben on their journey through a tumultuous but tender romance.

Cate Duncan is a therapist who is struggling to cope after her mother’s death. Cate’s world is forever transformed in All the Broken Places when she learns that she is an empath and is recruited to work for the MacGregor Group, a clinic staffed by a unique group of paranormally gifted individuals.

In the sequel, All the Wounds in Shadow, Cate has just begun her paranormal training—and a romance with her knee-weakening new boss, Ben—when the MacGregor Group is called into action to help solve an attempted murder. An acclaimed neuroscientist has been poisoned. Cate and her colleagues must use their unique talents to unlock the victim’s mind, discovering who attacked him and why. But for Cate, the case reopens painful wounds and threatens to unravel her budding relationship with Ben. When an unexpected crisis hits, Cate must find the courage to trust completely in Ben’s heart and her friends’ gifts, or her own life will be in jeopardy.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that All the Wounds in Shadow is set in?

Most of the book takes place just outside modern-day Washington, D.C. at a fictionalized version of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH Clinical Center is an enormous building that I imagine it would be easy to get lost in—a fact our characters are counting on to keep their patient safe in All the Wounds in Shadow.

Do you have a favorite scene in All the Wounds in Shadow?

I have so many! If I had to pick one, though, it would be the scene in which all of the members of the MacGregor Group pull together to aid heroine Cate in dealing with a crisis. I can’t say more without giving away spoilers, but I love these vibrant characters and enjoy putting them in situations where their personalities come to life as they interact with one another.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

This is a hard question to answer, because I have such deep, genuine affection for all of my characters, and yet each has also presented me with unique challenges. My heroine and viewpoint character, Cate, might fit both bills, though. I really enjoy writing in her voice and through her perspective. At the same time, she goes through a lot of emotional ups and downs, so as the writer, I go through them with her. It’s also sometimes hard to let her make decisions that are true to her character when I know they might end in tears.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Right now, I’m working on edits for the third book in The Healing Edge Series, All the Light There Is, which will be released in Spring/Summer 2017. Thrown into a completely new setting full of mystery and intrigue, the MacGregor Group faces down an ominous threat while Cate and Ben struggle to protect one another while their relationship deepens. I’m excited about all of the ways in which the various threads from the first two books are weaving together, and I look forward to sharing this final installment with readers!

Before Cate can settle into her new routine, the poisoning of a prominent neuroscientist draws the entire MacGregor Group into both a federal investigation and an even more insidious threat. Protected by Ben's former Marine Corps unit, Cate and her colleagues must use their alternative healing methods to solve the crime as their patient clings to life.

The responsibility of discovering crucial information falls to Cate and her parapsychological powers. But for Cate, unraveling the mystery means reopening wounds that had just begun to heal -- and in the environment of the Marine Corps unit, differences between Cate and Ben become clearer, straining their budding romance. When a new crisis looms, Cate must trust in her colleagues' gifts and the strength of Ben's love, finding the courage to confront her deepest and most terrifying demons -- or her own life will be at risk.
