Review: Taming Her Wolf by Dee Carney

Taming Her Wolf
Author: Dee Carney
Release Date: September 7, 2015
Publisher: Carina Press
ASIN:  B00XQTXN7E
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

For disgraced physician Kim Sharpe, Fire Creek was supposed to be a sanctuary, a place to hide from media scrutiny and the public eye. But when a group of wolf shifters break into her clinic and demand she save the life of a packmate, her serene world unravels. And when the wolf dies despite Kim's efforts, she's dragged into a hunt she can't control, led by a man she desperately wants to understand.

All shifters live with their beasts, but Chris "Brick" Preston's is dangerously close to the surface. And it wants Kim. Sex keeps the beast sated for now, but unless Kim can help him find a more permanent solution, Brick risks becoming a feral, banished—or put down—by his pack.

With each incredibly intense encounter, Brick and Kim grow closer. But time is not on their side. When Kim is faced with betraying the pack in order to save Brick's life, the consequences may be more than they can survive.

I have been on a shifter kick lately so I was pretty excited to start reading TAMING HER WOLF. The cover looked interesting and the storyline sounded like something I would enjoy. Unfortunately I came across a few issues that made getting into the story hard and eventually made it fall flat for me.

I will start out with some things that helped me get to the end of the book. Kim and Brick had really great chemistry from the moment they meet and it only grows stronger as the book goes on. Kim has a mystery past that is hinted at a lot and I wanted to know what that was so I had to continue to read the story.

Now that things I didn't really care for and made it hard for me to want to read more. I didn't really love Kim as a character. I wasn't really connecting with her before this, but I didn't like the fact that she went against her word to Brick and could have possibly ruined the packs anonymity. She was selfish and thought only of herself and what she wanted. It really turned  me off to her and made me not want to root for her.  We eventually find out that the shifters in the Fire Creek Shifters series has more than the two forms we are used to having (which would be totally fine if this was explained in the beginning of the story, but it isn't). They have a third form which they call beast. I was completely and utterly confused by this because they talk about their wolf and beast quite a bit and didn't actually EXPLAIN that they were talking about two different forms. I felt like I was missing something with the different names being used and it made the flow of the story kinda sputter out at many points, which makes me come to my last major issue. The story was very slow, which made me want to skip sections just to get to the good stuff. That is never good in my book.

If you decide to give TAMING HER WOLF a try I am glad that I was able to tell you about the third form before you start reading, which will hopefully help you to enjoy the story better than I did. The bad guy from TAMING HER WOLF was never caught, but unless something is really compelling in book two's blurb, I most likely won't pick up the story to find out how everything turns out.

I gave it 2.5/5 stars

Review: Nightbloom by Juliette Cross

Nightbloom
Release Date: September 1, 2015
Publisher: Lyrical Press
Nightwing Book #3
ASIN:   B00QP3CZR2
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

The love between a human and a Morgon, the dragon-hybrid race, tempts fate once more…

All her life, Ella Barrow has allowed others to make her decisions. Forced to stifle her artistic talents and stay in a loveless relationship with Clayton Kerrington, the man her mother believes to be her perfect match, Ella’s life may be safe—but it’s not her own. Paxon Nightwing, on the other hand, is anything but the safe choice.

A charming and alluring Morgon, Paxon sees Ella for the woman she truly is. His bold confidence and protective nature ignites a passion she’s never felt before. But a dark family tragedy forces their secrecy—until Clayton makes it impossible to hide their clandestine affair. Will Ella be strong enough to fight for herself at last? Or will she succumb once more and risk losing the only man she’s ever loved?
NIGHTBLOOM continues the Nightwing series with quiet and artistic Ella and powerful Morgan Paxon.

Ella's family expects her to live a certain way and marry Clayton, but she wants her life to be hers and she has come to realize that Clayton isn't who she wants. When she meets Paxon she fights her attraction, but is still drawn to him and can't seem to stop thinking about him. I have always liked Ella, I have always seen her as Jessen and Sorcha's quiet friend and NIGHTBLOOM digs deeper into her life and her dreams.

Paxon is a Morgon and like all the Morgon men we have come to love he's confident, protective, has an alpha male personality and isn't afraid to go after what he wants. Once Ella is on board, their relationship is fiery and strong. Ella's mother would never approve of her being with a Morgan man so their relationship has to be a secret, until it's not and Ella has to decide once and for all if she will fight for the life and love she wants or go back to living the life her family expects her to live.

My favorite scene of NIGHTBLOOM was none other than the bar scene where Ella FINALLY breaks up with her douche-bag of a boyfriend Clayton. AWESOME, pure AWESOME! I woohoo'd out loud and my husband looked at me like I was crazy. I also really enjoyed Ella's talk with her mom after her and Paxon's relationship was revealed. Ella really came out of her shell after starting her relationship with Paxon and it really showed.

A lot has changed in the world of the Nightwing series and I enjoy seeing the differences in each book. The relationships in each book are always strong and the storylines are always easy to follow. Each book can probably be read as a standalone, but you will miss out on character and world development and they are such quick reads I recommend just starting with book one.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: The Drafter by Kim Harrison

UFI welcomes Author Kim Harrison. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I spend a lot of time informally interacting with my readers with a strong internet presence through my website, FB, twitter, Instagram, and my blog. Most of what I feel comfortable sharing is already out there, but one thing that doesn’t come up much is my love for sailing. I grew up spending my summers on a 27 ft sailboat cruising the Great Lakes, and the combination of travel and security a boat give you fits me all too well. I don’t dare go to the ocean anymore, because I’m afraid I won’t come back.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

My family is older now, needing me less, so I find my downtime is spent more and more in my yard landscaping a very tired city lot. I’ve taken up golf recently, and while I don’t keep score, I can outdrive my mom upon occasion. In the winter, I can be found inside revamping my website or developing and designing knitted sculptures. My current project is a dragon that I just shared with the readers in a knit along. Seeing my work in other people’s hands was an unexpected joy.

What is your favorite part of writing?

I don’t have a favorite part of the process, tending to like different parts of each. I enjoy the plotting stage because I’m using pencil and paper and not on the computer. I like the rough draft stage because there’s always a surprise or two I wasn’t expecting, and I like the rewrite because of how the entire story shifts with the smallest of additions or changes. I even enjoy the copy edit and page proofs because the surety of grammar after months of playing with possibilities is refreshing.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I don’t have a routine apart from spending my early morning online with the readers, and my late morning and afternoon by myself with the work. Lunch is usually at my desk, and I quit when I feel I’ve accomplished my daily goal. Don’t get me wrong, though. If it’s a nice day after a week of rain, I will blow off the office for the garden in a heartbeat. Summer is too short in Michigan to rely on the weekend being sunny.

What are some of your favorite books or authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I enjoy reading Faith Hunter, Vicki Pettersson, and Jocelyn Drake. I’ve recently found YA author Pierce Brown, and I look forward to his next novel.

How would you pitch The Drafter to someone who has not heard of it before?

Short and sweet, The Drafter is Bourne Identity meets Minority Report. While on task, special agent Peri Reed realizes her partner has put her name at the top of a list of corrupt agents. Abandoning her employer and partner both, she has only her intuition to guide her as she tries to clear her name and bring down the agency that trained her.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that The Drafter is set in?

The Drafter is set a few years into the future in a remade, renewed, technologically-rich Detroit. I had a great time extrapolating out from current technology, and I would love to have some of the “toys” that Peri Reed gets to play with. I want her car. I want her phone. Her ex boyfriend? Not so much.

Do you have a favorite scene in The Drafter?

Not really, but I enjoyed the mental breather when Peri spends the night at her safe house apartment above the comic book shop. Much of the story is go, go, go, and the chance to slow down and see some of her past reflected in her hideaway was a needed break.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I truly enjoy all my main characters pretty much equally, but Silas comes back in the second book, along with Peri, Jack, and Allen, and that’s a fairly good indication that I enjoyed working with them. The hardest, again, depends upon what I’m trying to do. Action is easy. Emotional upheaval to provide realistic motivation stains my mood and is harder, no matter what character I’m currently working with.

What other projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I’m currently working on the second Peri Reed book, hopefully to be out next year about this time.

Detroit 2030. Double-crossed by the person she loved and betrayed by the covert government organization that trained her to use her body as a weapon, Peri Reed is a renegade on the run.

Don’t forgive and never forget has always been Peri’s creed. But her day job makes it difficult: she is a drafter, possessed of a rare, invaluable skill for altering time, yet destined to forget both the history she changed and the history she rewrote.

When Peri discovers her name on a list of corrupt operatives, she realizes that her own life has been manipulated by the agency. She joins forces with a mysterious rogue soldier in a deadly race to piece together the truth about her final task, unable to trust even herself.

I am a huge fan of Kim Harrison's The Hollows series and when I saw THE DRAFTER I wasn't quite sure what to think. For those in the same boat let me tell you, THE DRAFTER was an exciting, unique, fast-paced and mind-blowing experience.

Peri think she knows who she is, but she couldn't possibly be more wrong. When I thought I knew who Peri was, I was wrong. She is a huge mystery that is unraveled a little bit at a time as the book unfolds. She has the crazy ability to draft and it comes with huge downfalls. Not only does she lose her memory (and never knows how much she will lose until its done), but she has to let another person in her mind to help her regain the memories that she lost. Some out of her control things happen and she ends up losing YEARS of her life and doesn't know who she can trust. I can honestly say that I couldn't even tell who she could trust most of the time. She loses a lot in DRAFTER and I could feel her struggles as she faced the many challenges thrown at her.

Although Peri definitely steals the show there are some great secondary characters in THE DRAFTER. Two in particular I am really excited about seeing in book 2 and 3. I truly loved every minute and every twist and turn that THE DRAFTER threw at me and trust me, there are a LOT. I could never quite guess what was going to happen and when I had an idea, the story threw out another twist to make my head spin. Although there are plenty of answers in THE DRAFTER the end threw up new situations and questions that have me yearning for the next installment in the Peri Reed Chronicles.

I gave it 5/5 stars
