Guest Blog + Giveaway: Rendezvous With Yesterday by Dianne Duvall

Hello!  Thank you for joining me.  Today I’m celebrating the release of my time travel romance RENDEZVOUS WITH YESTERDAY, The Gifted Ones Book 2.  It’s always a pleasure to be here at Urban Fantasy Investigations, where today I have been asked the fun question:

What are the Top Five items that you wish you would have saved from your childhood?

The first things that came to mind when I saw this are items that are currently either on display in my home or tucked safely away in my closet.  ☺  I’ve actually managed to save quite a few treasures from my childhood.  Photographs.  Home movies.  A clay bust my dad, who—among other things—was a very talented artist, made of me when I was five years old.  When I pondered what I had not managed to save, though, I was surprised by the things that came to mind, most (if not all) of which I suspect will give off a nerdy vibe.  ☺

1. Books.  One of my earliest memories from elementary school was of waiting for the Book Bus to arrive on Friday.  I can’t remember how often it came.  I only remember that my teacher would pass out thin catalogues for us to take home.  I’d tell my parents which books I wanted.  They’d fill out the form and give me a check to include when I turned it in to my teacher.  Then two weeks later the Book Bus would return and a cellophane wrapped collection of books would be waiting on my desk when I got to school.  I was always so excited.  And many of those books are now sadly out of print.

2. My globe.  Almost every child I knew had a globe in his/her bedroom, and I was no different.  I wish I would’ve saved mine.  It always feels odd to me when I think this, but the world map has changed since I was a child.  And it continues to change as wars are fought, borders shift, and new countries form.  I would love to have that globe from my childhood so I could show it to future grandchildren and note the differences.

3. Rocks, rusty nails, and fool’s gold.  Weird, right?  Well, every summer when the excruciating heat would kick in, my parents would load up the car and we’d head out of the city for a vacation up in the mountains.  Once there, we’d pile into our sturdy four-wheel-drive jeep, head up pretty much any barely discernible trail we could find and explore whatever we found at the end of it.  Sometimes it was just wilderness.  Other times it was abandoned 19th century mines and ghost towns.  Not the kind that give visitors tours and have gift shops.  The kind that are way off the beaten path and are only populated by mice or other critters.  And sometimes I would find rocks, large rusty railway nails, and other gems there.  I wish I would’ve saved those.  They had such a history.  

4. A Papier-mâché Viking boat.  I had actually forgotten about this until I watched Game of Thrones.  ☺  But I remember making a papier-mâché Viking boat when I was in elementary school that turned out really well.  It had a dragon head on it and everything.  My dad helped me with it, so—in addition to looking cool—it had great sentimental value.  
   
5. The earliest stories I wrote.  I actually wrote my first novel when I was twelve or thirteen years old.  That’s one of the treasures I have tucked away in my closet.  But that was not my first foray into fiction writing.  I remember writing short stories before that.  Alas, I didn’t keep them, so most are now forgotten.

 “You guys ready?” I ask, forcing myself to stand slightly ahead of Bren.

     Shayna fumbles through her backpack and pulls out a box of toothpicks before passing the heavy pack to Emme. Emme doesn’t need her hands free to kick ass, but Shayna does.

     “So what’s the plan, dudes?” Shayna asks. “Onward and upward?”

     “Yeah,” I answer, shrugging when Bren looks at me. “This isn’t the good kind of magic, Bren. With all the evil set to rise, and the bad guys needing dark witches to make it happen, you know our motto: no stone left unturned, and no scaries left to chew on our insides.”

     He snags my elbow when I start to head for the dense brush. “If we can, I’ll let you make the capture. It’s the only way to keep Genevieve from sinking her teeth into you. But that thing in there—if it’s as bad as I think it is—there’s no bringing her home alive, got me? I’ll make the kill if it comes down to it.”

     He doesn’t think I can take her, much less kill her. And maybe he’s right. But that doesn’t mean we can turn our backs and pretend she’s not here.

     I kick at the dirt at my feet. I don’t like to kill, despite what people think and despite that it’s something I’m freakishly good at. I’ve had plenty of practice, believe me. My first kill occurred when I was just a teen, the second, moments after. It was the right thing to do given what happened. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t sick to my gut. I burned them with enough heat to smoke their chests, allowing them to feel every ounce of pain they caused me and my sisters. Too many followed after that, enough that I’ve lost count. But as much as the dead mark my bones, and stay a part of me, I’ll do it again if I have to.

     I meet Bren’s face. “Dead or alive, we have to take care of Savana and whoever else might be helping her.”

     “Even if it means you get stuck serving Genevieve?” he presses.

     He’s not asking. He knows taking out Savana is the right thing to do. He’s just making sure we’re all on the same page. “Yes,” I answer.

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

Hmm. Great question. I have two dogs, a Pomeranian named Clara and a Chihuahua mix named Zoey, I love ballroom dancing and behind-the-scenes documentaries, and my favorite color is blue.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

My guilty pleasures are watching The Bachelor/Bachelorette and cooking. I’m trying to increase my culinary skills. ☺

What is your Favorite part of writing? 

I love exploring characters and worlds that are different from mine.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not necessarily. I just need my laptop, my coffee, my music and earbuds (to drowned out reality) and that’s about it.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Karen Marie Moning, JR Ward, Stacia Kane, Nicole Peeler, Jaye Wells, Jennifer Ashley’s shifter series, Mary Janice Davidson. I could go on and on… ☺

How would you pitch Blood Bound to someone who has not heard of it before?

Forbidden, white-hot passion flares between a sheltered schoolteacher and a half-breed demon who must work together to find her missing sister and achieve his goals for justice. Supernatural meets Sons of Anarchy with a touch of Star Wars Space Bar and Wild, Wild West thrown in for fun.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Blood Bound is set in? 

I created a fictional town in Wyoming for the series called Salvation. I based it off of several real-life small towns in the area and really wanted to give the books a feel of reality. I also wanted to give the gang’s hangout, Seven, a sort of old-world wild west saloon type feel. Like it’s a place where time and space kind of warp and anything can happen (and does…LOL!)

Do you have a favorite scene in Blood Bound?

I’d have to say that’s a tie between the opening scene, where the reader gets to experience Salvation, Wyoming and Seven through the heroine’s eyes, and then the first POV scene with Dante, where you get your introduction to his inner world and also meet my villain, Basher.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

 

I have to say, I do love writing villains. There’s just something so fun and freeing about a person who does exactly what they want, says what they want, and basically doesn’t care. I had a blast writing both Argus and Satan in my Seven Seals Series, and love the scenes with Basher in the Blood Ravagers Trilogy too (though we don’t actually get his POV).

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Books One through Three of my Seven Seals Series are out now. Books Two and Three of the Blood Ravagers Trilogy—Dex and Rev’s stories—will be out in 2017 from Tule Publishing!

“Do you know why they call this place Seven?”

“It’s the magic number?”

His expression remained flat.

Anna cleared her throat, doing her best to hide the fact her knees were quaking. “Something to do with poker, maybe?”

The man released her arm and stepped closer. For each step he took, she retreated, until the cold stone wall pressed against her back, preventing escape. He stopped several inches in front of her, the intense heat of him searing her front. Close enough for her to smell his scent—cloves and smoke and clean, aroused male. Once upon a time, he would’ve been exactly the kind of guy she would’ve gone for—all dark and erotic and alpha sexy. She gasped and shrank away.

They were far too dangerous.

A loud crack snapped through the room.

The man had a whip. Her tingling knees threatened to buckle.

“The seventh circle of hell.”  He wrapped the leather fall around his hand. “Violence. This club. Seven. It is home to all the most interesting sinners.”

Okay. Yeah. She had to escape Mr. Tall, Dark, and Dominant before she was kneeling at his feet, begging him for mercy. “Maybe I should leave now?”

“Yes.” He stood a good foot taller than her five-foot-three-inch height and his shoulder-length black curls all but begged her to tousle them, begged her to fist them tight in her hands while he beat her then fucked her silly. Her fingers twitched as he leaned closer, his breath ghosting across her cheek as he whispered, “Yes, perhaps you should, tu effapyfs.”
