Megafauna Inspiration, or Why I Wrote Ice Age Shifters
By Carol Van Natta

Authors are quirky lot. We gain inspiration from the most eclectic things imaginable. A misread sign (sadly, there are no Sonic Dragons), seeing a Van der Graaf generator in person (they’re noisy!), the strange bug my cat ate (don’t ask).

I love reading about and seeing the fossil evidence of our recent past. I suspect I was strongly influenced by a field trip to a natural history museum when I was young. I got to stand under a the museum’s recreation of a woolly mammoth, and it was taller than my house. I learned it was one of the really big animals—megafauna—that roamed the Earth in the Ice Age, and that early humans drew cave paintings of them.

The most famous place to see fossils of Ice Age megafauna in North America is the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. A hidden subterranean oil seep created treacherous ground that trapped prey animals, which in turn snared predators, which in turn snared carrion eaters. Prehistoric lions, tigers, and bears all met their unpleasant end. The gooey tar preserved their bones for us to find.
The excellent life-sized exhibits proved to me that I definitely would NOT want to be hunted by an American lion (Panthera atrox), dire wolves (Canis dirus), or a prehistoric bear (Arctotherium). They all towered over their modern counterparts, had big teeth and claws, and were built for cold (unlike me). Indeed, some scientists argue that one reason for the demise of the megafauna was the end of the Ice Age, when the cold retreated to the extreme polar latitudes.

I’ve always wanted to write a paranormal romance shifters series with humor and heart, so when I came across an article about paleontologists excavating an extinct type of bear in South America, inspiration struck. What if, in the right circumstances, shifters are born as throwbacks to that earlier time, when the animals were really, really big and dangerous?

From that spark, my series was born. Ice Age shifters flummox modern shifter clans, packs, and prides, who don’t know what to do with the megafauna in their midst. Fortunately, their true mates do. Of course, the path to true love isn’t a walk in the Ice Age park—there are lots of adventures and fun along the way.

A lonely bear shifter meets his mate. She’s running for her life and doesn’t have time for romance.

Pregnant Jackie Breton just escaped from a corrupt feline pack intent on selling her half-shifter baby to the highest bidder. She’s smart, independent, and has a desperate plan to keep her baby safe: Get away from the pride as fast and far as possible.

Trevor Hammond, prehistoric bear shifter, has been rejected by everyone in his life for… being born, basically. Well, except for the beloved aunt who raised him. He’s built a career as an independent trucker, but life would be much better with someone he can hold in his arms and claim as his own.

When Jackie meets Trevor at a truck stop, his bear demands he help her. His aunt even calls with a dire warning: Get Jackie to the magical sanctuary town in Wyoming before she’s killed.
Jackie thinks he’s sexy as hell, but too good to be true. She doesn’t trust shifters. With the feline pride hot on her trail, however, Trevor and the quirky town of Kotoyeesinay might be her only chance for survival. Even Trevor’s indomitable bear may be no match for the dangerous enemy seeking retribution.

Discover the secret world of magic and true mates in Shifter Mate Magic, the first book in USA TODAY bestselling author Carol Van Natta's fun, action-filled, steamy-hot Ice Age Shifters™ series.

Southern Wyoming ~ Summer 1993
Jackie nodded and walked quickly, following the arrows. Luckily, she didn’t have to wait in line or share the facilities. After the blessed relief of peeing, she used soap and water from the sink to make herself look as presentable as possible under the circumstances. Her light brown skin already made her stand out, because the farther north she’d traveled, the fewer people she’d seen who looked like her. She threw the soiled paper towels in the trash and eyed herself critically in the mirror. At least now she didn’t look like a dangerous fugitive who’d escaped a violent pack of leopard shifters who wanted her back alive or dead. Despite the warmth of the restroom, she shivered.
“Get back to the plan, Jackie,” she told her mirrored self. She couldn’t afford to fall apart, or everything she was afraid of would come to pass. She bent over to drink straight from the sink’s faucet, then wiped the water off her face. She re-centered her her backpack and went out into the convenience store.
The smells of warm bread and sizzling hamburgers drew her like a lodestone toward the restaurant section, but she couldn’t afford to waste the time or the money. She sternly made herself march into the back aisle and open the refrigerator door for the lunch meats and cheeses.
She got a whiff of a tantalizing scent as she pulled her selections off the hooks. Not food, but something intensely interesting. Her sense of hearing and smell had magnified with each passing week of her pregnancy. She wished she knew if that was typical for a human woman carrying a shifter’s child but she had no one to ask. Certainly not the lying son-of-a-bitch leopard who’d gotten her pregnant, despite her precautions. She hoped he was roasting in hell, but he probably wasn’t. Justice for the privileged rich, regardless of skin color or species, had a whole different set of rules.
She let go of the refrigerator door and turned toward the scent, only to run headlong into a man who’d just turned down the aisle.
“Sorry,” she said, even as he said the same word. She regained control of her suddenly clumsy feet. She got the impression of chiseled cheekbones and a square jaw before she dropped her gaze out of habit, one learned from living with volatile shifters. His scent hit her like a freight train a moment later, all woodsy and leathery and mouth-wateringly male.
No one, not even the father of her baby, back when she’d thought she was in love with him and he with her, had ever smelled that good. She took a step back, because if she hadn’t, she’d have been tempted to stick her face in the vee of his short-sleeved T-shirt and lick.
“My fault,” he said. “Are you…” He trailed off and audibly swallowed.
She made the mistake of looking up at him and confirmed that he was the sexiest man she’d ever seen, even counting the handsome actors she’d thrilled over as a teenager. His brown skin and features spoke of an ethnic heritage something like hers, and his warm, coppery-brown eyes threatened to drown her on the spot. His wide shoulders and arms looked strong enough to protect her from anything. The few tight coils of hair on his muscled chest mirrored the close-cropped hair on his head. His low-slung jeans and boots completed the mesmerizing package.
She swallowed and took another step back, away from temptation. “I’m fine.”
Except she wasn’t. She wanted to set fire to all her plans in favor of getting to know the man standing in front of her. For his part, he looked stunned.
She shook herself. Not, not, not happening. She was a pregnant fugitive with enough secrets to write her own soap opera, and an implacable enemy on her tail. A human, no matter how tall, broad-shouldered, and sexy, was no match for a criminal cat-shifter pride with claws and teeth, and vengeance on their minds.

She clutched her meat and cheese packages to her chest and turned away, even though her now throbbing body and aching breasts begged her to get closer. She’d learned to ride out the hormonal roller coaster of being pregnant, so she could damn well ride this out, too.

Promo: Shadow Warrior by Christine Feehan (@AuthorCFeehan, @BerkleyRomance)

Shadow Warrior
Shadow #4
Amazon
Danger inspires fierce passion when a serial killer threatens Chicago’s Ferraro crime family in this novel in Christine Feehan’s New York Times bestselling series.

Vittorio Ferraro is a man whose family loyalty knows no bounds. He would die for his siblings and the people they love, but what he really wants is to start a family of his own. Deep down, Vittorio has always known finding a woman who could ride shadows would be nearly impossible—let alone one who could accept his particular needs—and he never expected to find her in the middle of a kidnapping.…

Grace Murphy has always been drawn to Vittorio Ferraro—or at least to the billionaire’s public bad-boy persona. Now that she’s under his protection and the sole focus of his intense caring, she can’t help wanting to get as close to him as possible. But Grace knows her presence is putting the entire Ferraro family in danger. Her monster of a brother will never let her go, but Vittorio has no intention of losing the woman whose shadow matches his own.
Excerpt:

It was just her luck to be in the worst possible circumstances when she met the hottest man in the entire world. Grace Murphy wished the earth would just open up and swallow her, hospital bed and all. The Ferraro family certainly had a strong sense of responsibility when it came to someone getting shot in their parking lot. Even that was embarrassing, having her own foster brother try to sell her into prostitution to pay his gambling debts.
She was like everyone else, following the life of the Ferraros in magazines bought at the grocery store or flipped through at the beauty parlor. She’d always been drawn to Vittorio, finding herself reading every single thing about him. Now, here he was in person, sprawled out in a chair, more beautiful than the photographs could capture, as big as life. Bigger even, the reality of him taking up an enormous amount of space, his wide shoulders and long legs keeping her attention riveted on him.
She groaned aloud and covered her red face with one hand. He’d been there every single day. Right there. In that chair. Pacing around the room. Talking on his cell. It didn’t matter what he was doing, he saw to her every need. He noticed before she did that her pain level was rising, and he took care of it. He didn’t like the food they were serving her, and she was given catered, very nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She hadn’t been able to feed herself those first few days and he had been the one to sit on the edge of her bed and feed her.
The first week after she’d been shot and operated on, there’d been so much pain she could barely breathe, and she hadn’t been able to fully comprehend who he was. Mostly, she’d slept and thought she was dreaming. One of the nurses had referred to him as her fiancĂ©e and she had been confused. She’d started to correct her, but then looked beyond her to see Vittorio Ferraro hovering behind the woman.
Their eyes had locked. Had she known that eyes like his existed in real life? She’d been captivated. Spellbound. Unable to think. Those eyes had turned her brain to mush. Her heart had leapt to her throat. Grace had felt as if he was willing her not to speak, not to contradict what the nurse was saying—and she hadn’t. Then the morphine had kicked in and the pain had gone enough for her to drift off.
“Grace?”
His voice. It was beautiful. Low. Soothing, yet at the same time, there was absolute command, as if he ruled the world and knew it. She’d heard that voice in the parking lot, stopping everyone, giving him the chance to act, to save her from the two men Haydon was selling her to for his debts.
Vittorio remained silent after just saying her name. She couldn’t help but look at him, that tone compelled her to raise her gaze to his no matter how reluctant she was. It took her a few moments to gather the courage to meet those eyes. Deep blue, like the deepest, clearest sea. She felt as if she were drowning when she looked into his eyes.
She touched her tongue to her lips—the lips he’d personally applied lip balm to—and lifted her lashes. At once she had the strange sensation of falling, of tumbling into those dark depths, and there was no saving herself. Her heart beat wildly and, in her veins, there was a rush of heat that spread through her body like a wildfire.
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
She had no idea how he could make her want to tell him the truth, no matter that she wanted to hide it from him. She didn’t want to admit that he was the problem, that he was that fantasy she went to bed with every night, and now he was there, larger than life, and way more than she could ever handle. She’d watched him at every charity event, sometimes nearly forgetting her job, which was to stay behind the scenes and make certain everything ran smoothly.
“Grace.”
Again with the name. It sounded so different when he said it. She’d always thought her name plain. Old-fashioned. When Vittorio said it in that enthralling tone, she liked the way it sounded.

Promo + Giveaway: August Prather is Not Dead Yet by Danielle Roux (@DKRoux, @XpressoTours )

August Prather is Not Dead Yet
Katherine Garnet is a writer who has never cared much about much, making it awfully difficult to create new content. Despite the fact she has the “edge” of being trans (according to her cis male editor) she is not looking to capitalize on her own personal story. Garnet tries to sneak a peek at her rival, August Prather’s, latest fantasy manuscript about a quest for the elixir of life. While reading, Garnet gets accidentally dragged into a bizarre cross-country road trip that may or may not have a purpose and begins to see parallels in the story of the manuscript and the reality of their journey. Along the way, they encounter a parade of equally troubled individuals, including ghost-hunting priests, a robot magician, a discarded piece of furniture, a runaway teenager, and a Japanese rock star. As Garnet confronts her past, she begins to understand why someone might want to live forever.
 Excerpt:

“If you don’t mind, do you think you could get out of my car?”
Garnet thought it was a dream. She hadn’t had a dream in a long time.
“Um…” the placid female voice continued. “Are you even alive?”
Garnet didn’t know how to answer that. She felt something pinch her arm.
“I wonder how a dead woman got into my Prius.”
Garnet opened her eyes. She saw pink hair. She knew she was doomed.
Somehow Garnet wriggled out from the backseat floor. Her back hurt, so she focused on popping it and on smoothing down her skirt as she sat on the seat. She started fixing her hair, avoiding the stare of the girl kneeling on the seat beside her.
“I know who you are!” she pointed like a child pointing out a new toy.
“Mmm?” Garnet said, while holding a hair tie in her teeth.
   “You’re Katherine Garnet.”
Kate let her hair fall. She gradually lifted her gaze from her lap to the person beside her. August had apparently lost all interest in her at this point. She was busy trying to scrape a strange orange substance off the driver’s side headrest.
    “Yes, I’m Kate Garnet.”
    No response.
    “Think it’s cheese?”
    “What?” Kate reeled.
She pointed at the orange stuff.
“But how would cheese get up here… I don’t even eat cheese…” August kept scraping.
“Um… so it’s very nice to meet you.”
“Oh! Nice to meet you, I’m August Prather,” she held out the hand she’d been using to scrape up the orange stuff and smiled. Kate shook her hand. “I thought I’d get you out of the car so you wouldn’t suffocate. That would be awkward. I have to go.”
August indicated the scene outside the window.
They were in the desert. They must have been driving for a long time. The sky stretched over the land and engulfed any idea of scale. They could be miles away from the nearest town. Or they could be days.
    “Where are you going?”
    “The church.”
Garnet hadn’t noticed it before. An enormous Gothic revival church in the middle of the desert, complete with bell towers, flying buttresses and stained-glass windows.
“I have to go to confession,” August sounded serious. “Want to come?”
    Like she had a choice.

Danielle K. Roux is a writer, teacher, and historian. Her first novel August Prather is Not Dead Yet is currently available in e-book and paperback through Parliament House Press (and soon will be available in hardcover and audio book). Danielle has always loved reading and telling stories – especially stories with adventure, mystery, humor, romance and at least a little bit of spookiness. Not Dead Yet has all this covered, with a story-within-a-story structure and a quest for immortality in the early twentieth century paired with a present-day road trip. There’s a lot of existential crisis and a male/male romance that is sweet and steamy.

Danielle has been writing fiction since she was nine, after getting tired of reading from the perspective of white, straight male characters in fantasy novels. Her first written story involved a group of middle school girls who find necklaces used by a dead witch that give them supernatural powers. It was written in notebooks in purple and green gel pens that are currently housed in a box in her linen closet. She is inspired by travelling to new places and reading about the stories tied to landscapes. She has at least three novels building in her brain (or wherever novels come from) and wishes she was writing them all right now.

Danielle lives with her wife and two orange cats in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has added a lot of young adult fantasy fiction to her bookshelves recently, and regrets nothing. Her dream library would be accessed through a secret door and look something like the library in the animated Disney Beauty and the Beast, although it would also have a cute barista or sentient coffee machine that once was said barista.

When she isn’t writing or thinking about writing, Danielle is building houses in the Sims, listening to podcasts, or taking Buzzfeed quizzes to find out what kind of tree she is based on her hair color. She has recently been watching lots of old BBC period pieces, and some of them are good. She has begun to drink Diet Coke and is worried this might be a real problem. Coffee and tea are still her primary beverages of choice.

Guest Blog + Giveaway: Hunt of the Gods by Amy Braun ( @amybraunauthor, @XpressoTours)

UFI welcomes Author Amy Braun. Thanks for Joining us!!

Into the Past with Amy Braun
What books would your past self recommend at ages 5, 11, 16 and 20?

For my five year old self, I would recommend any book with dragons in it. Dragons are fascinating creatures and different in every culture. They are also exciting and bring a lot of adventure and imagination to the mind. I don’t have a particular one to point at, so I would just dive into whichever one I could get my hands on. Or ask my parents to buy for me.

At eleven, I would read the “Percy Jackson” novels. I actually haven’t read those before and I wish I had when I was younger. Mythology has always been a deep love of mine and I always love learning more about gods and goddesses of other cultures, especially the Greeks. I’m also always interested in what could potentially happen if modern society fell back into the hands of ancient pagan deities. There are so many options, as the gods would be thinking of how best to increase their own power rather than the well-being of their followers. That said, eleven-year-old me wouldn’t be interested in ramifications or politics. She would just be waiting for the next big monster battle.

At age sixteen, I would do basically what I do now: fill my soul with young adult fantasy novels. In recent years, it’s become a deep love of mine. Young adult books are complex and mature and filled with character growth of all sorts. I can’t get enough of them and their themes of first love, teachings, struggle, and challenges of youth. I wouldn’t be able to pick just one, but “Six of Crows,” “Throne of Glass,” “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” and “An Ember In The Ashes,” would be among my top picks. All of  those books have incredible and complex character relationships that add to the impact of their themes, and they would be excellent works of study to help build my career.

In my twenties, I would still be reading young adult novels, but I would also venture into epic and traditional fantasy. I would of course read Tolkien, but also Michael J. Sullivan, Mark Lawrence, and Jay Kristoff. At this point, I would be wanting to understand and read more about rich, detailed worlds and how they can be constructed. For as much as I love characters, I have to say that world building and lore are massive draws for me as a reader. There are always new things added to each book-world that I never expect when I read as a fan or as a creator, and watching masters create such places is never short of astounding.

No matter what age, I think it would lead to the same thing: My desire to be a full-time, professional fantasy author. There is literally nothing else I can picture myself doing. It’s the perfect fit for my personality and lifestyle. Reading is one of the highlights of my day, and while I do enjoy books as a fan, I also enjoy taking the time to see what other authors do and learn from them. I don’t think anyone should ever stop learning, and if my job literally pertains to me finding out how one author creates a dragon and another introduces ancient gods into the world… well, I can’t think of a better career for me at any age.

Hunt of the Gods
(Areios Brothers #2)
Two months have passed since Derek Areios—war-scion and heir of Ares—and the band of rogue scions he’s aligned with recovered both the Thunderbolt of Zeus and the Heart of the Devourer and returned them to the Gods. During the battle, Derek discovered he could control not only the element of fire, as all war scions can, but also the dark element “aether,” making him the only scion alive to wield two types of elemental magic.

Commanded by Zeus to retrieve the Trinity Weapons and the Shards of Cronus, Derek and the rogue scions are thwarted in their goal by a gang of water scions with a grudge against one of the rogues—Thea, heir of Poseidon. Both groups travel to an uninhabited island to recover one of the Shards––the Eye that belonged to Cronus, King of the Titans. But what they encounter will lead them down a path of brutal betrayals, hard truths, painful memories, and desperate actions.

With angry and impatient gods breathing down his neck, a curse that allows Ares to control him, a prophecy he’s desperate to avoid, a magic spear corrupting his thoughts, and two forms of elemental magic, Derek has a lot of baggage—and a lot of power. Will the price of using that power to satisfy the Gods be too much for him to pay?

Mythological monsters, explosive magic, and devastating truths take center stage in the second novel of the action-packed AREIOS BROTHERS series from Amy Braun.
