Interview: Sarah Beth Durst

UFI welcomes Sarah Beth Durst Author of Drink, Slay, Love. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

You might have noticed from my author photo that I have curly hair. But what you might not know is that my hair is water resistant. When dunked under water, the curls do not straighten, and when out in a rainstorm, water does not penetrate to my scalp for several minutes.

In other words, I am part duck.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I love spending time with my family. Preferably while eating something yummy like chicken massaman curry or freshly picked raspberries or pizza or... *heads to kitchen*

What is your Favorite part of writing?

My favorite part of writing is how it feels when the writing is flowing. The outside world fades away, and you can't tell whether the words are guiding the movie in your head or whether the movie is guiding the words.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

I used to think I needed a routine: I'd write at a certain time in a certain place with certain music... Now, I know that all I need is my laptop, two free hands, and a few minutes. Chocolate does help, though.

One secret to writing that no one ever told me is that it does get easier. Okay, certain parts of it don't, but over time, you do figure out your own writing process and learn what works best for you.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I ADORE urban fantasy / paranormal books and have adored them ever since I read my very first Charles de Lint short story.

Recently, I read and loved The Daughter of Smoke and Bones by Laini Taylor, Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews, Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready, Grave Dance by Kalayna Price, Bloodshot by Cherie Priest, Paranormalcy by Kiersten White, Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, and Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris.

How would you pitch Drink, Slay, Love to someone who has not heard of it before?

Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire, fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a were-unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Drink, Slay, Love is set in?

Drink, Slay, Love is set in Connecticut. With vampires. And unicorns that hunt them.

Do you have a favorite scene in Drink, Slay, Love?

Behind her, she heard two voices.

"Dude, you ask her."

"Nuh-uh, you ask."

"Rock paper scissors?"

"You cheat, man," Matt said.

"How is it possible to cheat at rock paper scissors?" Zeke asked.

"You game the system," Matt said.

"It's not my fault you always choose rock."

"My manly strength will not allow me to choose a less unyielding material," Matt said. "I have
rocks for muscles. You fear my strength."

"Whatever," Zeke said. "You never choose scissors."

"Sometimes I choose paper," Matt said. "You can't predict me. I'm cagey."

"You always choose rock or paper," Zeke said. "So long as I always choose paper, I can't lose."

"See, I knew you gamed the system."

Pearl did not turn around.

"On the count of three?" Zeke asked. Together, they said, "One. Two. Three." There was a
brief pause. "You should have chosen scissors."

"That would have been too obvious," Matt said. "You just said I never choose scissors so you
had to know I would choose scissors so I couldn't choose scissors because you'd know it. Hence,
the rock."

"Hence the paper, covering your rock. You ask her."

"Well played, my friend," Matt said. "Well played."

Which character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I loved writing Pearl. She's fearless, funny, and (mostly) evil. To write her, I pretty much would just say to myself, "Okay, what would I NEVER do or say in this situation?" From start to finish, this novel was so much fun to write. It was the best writing experience I have ever had.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I am currently working on a YA standalone fantasy called VESSEL. It will be out in fall 2012 from Simon & Schuster.

Thanks so much for interviewing me!

Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.

Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.

The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?

Review: Green-Eyed Envy by Kasey MacKenzie

Green-Eyed Envy
Author:Kasey Mackenzie
Release Date: June 28, 2011
Publisher: Ace
Shades of Fury Book #2
ISBN:   0441020496
ISBN13:  9780441020492
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Jealousy can be a killer...

As a Fury, Marissa Holloway belongs to an Arcane race that has meted out justice since time immemorial. As Boston's chief magical investigator, it's her duty to solve any crimes committed by or against supernaturals.

Months have gone by since Riss discovered some unwelcome truths about her past--and managed to stop a supernatural war. Since then things have been quiet. Too quiet. But that all changes when the bodies of Bastai, shapeshifters also known as Cats, begin piling up in Boston's magical underbelly--even though the legendary shifters are supposed to have ninety-nine lives.

One common thread ties the victims together: all were old flames of FBI Agent Harper Cruz. And since Harper and Riss's lover Scott Murphy enjoyed a one-night stand before he and Riss reunited, the Fury has twice the incentive to crack the case wide open, before the killer's green-eyed gaze turns in Scott's direction..

I really enjoyed RED HOT FURY, so there was no doubt in my mind that I would be grabbing a copy of GREEN EYED ENVY the day it came out. I find Riss (Marissa) sassy, fun, and determined. I have also really liked the rest of the characters so far in the series. Harper a friend and past fling of Scott's that we met in book one has a much bigger role in book two. The whole book is pretty much about her and a serial killer that is offing her ex boyfriends as it gets closer to her wedding day. Riss is not only determined to stop him from killing more people but she is worried for Scott as well due to his past "relationship" with Harper.

I didn't feel that GREEN EYED ENVY was AS good as RED HOT FURY for a few reasons. The mysterious were pretty easy to solve to me. There were lots of things I guessed before their reveals. The emotions weren't as high for me, I didn't feel as attached to the story line as I would have liked. Although you can tell that they care a lot about each other and the feelings built up more the relationship between Riss and Scott didn't have as much emotion behind it as in book one. I missed the whole Fury aspect. There wasn't as much of her being her Fury self as there was in book one and I really would have liked that. Even after saying all of that I don't regret reading GREEN EYED ENVY, I still enjoyed it  and there were a few things that happened in the book that I'm excited to see more of in following books.  I will be buying the next book in the series and I think if you liked book one you will still enjoy what GREEN EYED ENVY adds to the series.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Interview: Cherie Priest

UFI welcomes Cherie Priest Author of The Cheshire Red Reports series. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I’m very pro-Batman; I love vintage clothes and accessories; I love dark/vivid purples, greens, and oranges – but mostly wear black; I really miss the vanilla-mint toothpaste Crest used to make; I’m a sucker for lavender, jasmine, and lilac scents; I have comically flat feet and mostly wear flat shoes with special inserts, these days, which makes me feel old (but comfortable).

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

Down time? I’m writing one book, putting out a total of four books this year, and working a full time day-job. If I have an hour of downtime, I’m likely to drink or sleep. That’s pretty much it, right now.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

Finishing.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not really any routines, but I do have to structure my day pretty closely when I’m writing and day-jobbing. Mornings go to day-job; break for lunch and work-out; afternoons belong to my books.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Genres?

Honestly, I don’t read much fiction these days. Most of my reading time goes to nonfiction/research for my steampunk novels – which yes, are fiction, but they’re set in the 19th century and I like my verisimilitude.

How would you pitch your Cheshire Red Reports series to someone who has not heard of it before?

I’ve been calling it my fabulous urban fantasy adventure about a neurotic vampire/thief and her wealthy blind client, with Bonus! Cuban drag queen and military intrigue.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that your Cheshire Red Reports series is set in?

It’s set here and now, and based in Seattle, Washington – where I live at present. And there are vampires.

Do you have a favorite scene in Hellbent?

Hmm. My favorite scene to write was probably the opener – with Horace in the bar. It’s basically a chapter-long penis joke. My parents are, um, very proud….

Which character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

Favorite: Probably Adrian. He’s a scene-stealer, which is a real trick when you’re sharing scenes with Raylene. Hardest: Domino, because he’s on the cusp of so much change and growth.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

Definitely one more Raylene book, and another steampunk book this year (plus yet another next year). Beyond that, the Magic 8 ball says, “Ask again later.”

Author Bio:
I was born in Tampa, Florida, down the street from the stadium in 1975 — the same year that gave us Saturday Night Live and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, so I consider myself in good company. I have a B.A. in English from Southern Adventist University, here noted because it embarrasses them to share a paragraph with Tim Curry in drag; and I have an M.A. in Rhetoric (composition/critical theory) from the University of Tennessee, which couldn’t care less.

I write novels. To date, I’ve had ten of them published, and another four are in the queue. My most recent book is Bloodshot. My best-known books are probably Dreadnought and Boneshaker (2009) – which was nominated for a Nebula Award and a Hugo Award. Boneshaker also won the PNBA Award, as well as the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, so yes, my resume is starting to look a little lop-sided. (Not that I’m complaining.)

In the spring of 2011 I began working for a video game company, but my project there hasn’t been announced yet – so I don’t get to blab about it. (Alas!) Minus that one super-secret thing, you can find a mostly proper bibliography over here.

In March of 2006 I married my long-time significant other, Aric; and together with our fat black cat named Spain (as in, “I claim this land for–”), we moved to Seattle shortly after the wedding. Seattle is very different from the southeast. I’m still getting accustomed to it.

BAD TO THE BONE

Vampire thief Raylene Pendle doesn’t need more complications in her life. Her Seattle home is already overrun by a band of misfits, including Ian Stott, a blind vampire, and Adrian deJesus, an ex-Navy SEAL/drag queen. But Raylene still can’t resist an old pal’s request: seek out and steal a bizarre set of artifacts. Also on the hunt is a brilliant but certifiably crazy sorceress determined to stomp anyone who gets in her way. But Raylene’s biggest problem is that the death of Ian’s vaunted patriarch appears to have made him the next target of some blood-sucking sociopaths.  Now Raylene must snatch up the potent relics, solve a murder, and keep Ian safe—all while fending off a psychotic sorceress. But at least she won’t be alone. A girl could do a lot worse for a partner than an ass-kicking drag queen—right?

VAMPIRE FOR HIRE

Raylene Pendle (AKA Cheshire Red), a vampire and world-renowned thief, doesn’t usually hang with her own kind. She’s too busy stealing priceless art and rare jewels. But when the infuriatingly charming Ian Stott asks for help, Raylene finds him impossible to resist—even though Ian doesn’t want precious artifacts. He wants her to retrieve missing government files—documents that deal with the secret biological experiments that left Ian blind. What Raylene doesn’t bargain for is a case that takes her from the wilds of Minneapolis to the mean streets of Atlanta. And with a psychotic, power-hungry scientist on her trail, a kick-ass drag queen on her side, and Men in Black popping up at the most inconvenient moments, the case proves to be one hell of a ride.

Early Review: The Taker by Alma Katsu

The Taker
Author:Alma Katsu
Release Date: September 6, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
ISBN:   1439197059
ISBN13: 9781439197059
Genre: Paranormal/Historic Romance
Review Copy Source: Publisher

True love can last an eternity . . . but immortality comes at a price. . . .

On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.

Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a Puritan settlement. Consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town’s founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But the price she pays is steep—an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate for all eternity. And now, two centuries later, the key to her healing and her salvation lies with Dr. Luke Findley.

Part historical novel, part supernatural page-turner, The Taker is an unforgettable tale about the power of unrequited love not only to elevate and sustain, but also to blind and ultimately destroy, and how each of us is responsible for finding our own path to redemption.
I'm not huge into Historical type books so I really wasn't sure going into THE TAKER if it would be something I would enjoy. That is important to tell you because in a shocking switch I enjoyed the flashback/historical moments of the story the most. The story is about a woman Lanny who falls in love with a man (well boy as they were children when she fell in love with him) that will never love her back. The story switches from present day to past as Lanny recounts her centuries of life with and without this man by her side to an ER doctor Luke who happens to live in the town she is from. Luke is pulled to Lanny and her story from the beginning of the book and listens to everything she says as they escape the town Luke hasn't been able to break away from. Every word of THE TAKER is beautifully written while your pulled into this tragic love story. The plot flowed nicely and was quite different from what I usually read. I was disappointed with the ending, I was reading along and all of a sudden there was the acknowledgments right as It felt like stuff was about to happen so it was left feeling unfinished so I really hope that what I read from someone else's review of there being another book is true. THE TAKER is definitely worth the read if you enjoy historical type books and just might surprise you if you aren't usually taken with that sort of thing.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars
