The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

If you enjoyed VAMPIRE ACADEMY you will enjoy HALF-BLOOD. Alex's mother took her out of school one day with no explanation and Alex has been moving around among the humans ever since. Something big happens where she is brought back to the school and has to make up all her missed training so that she isn't forced into serving as a slave to the pure bloods for the rest of her life.

Alex is rebellious, funny, independent and all around easy to like. The "relationship" between Alex and Aiden is one of those forbidden romances that could ruin Alex's life if they took it to the next stage. I really had no troubles getting into the storyline, I stayed up way to late reading and didn't want to put the book down when my eyes felt like they were falling out of my head. There is some fantastic Greek mythology thrown into the story that brings the book together. I don't want to say to much more about the story for fear that I will give something away so I will just say although there is a lot of similarity to VA I feel that there was a lot that was original to HALF-BLOOD that kept me interested and engaged throughout the book and I cant wait to read PURE in April 2012.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE—IF IT DOESN’T KILL YOU FIRST

Lara Jansen is a truthseeker, gifted—or cursed—with the magical ability to tell honesty from lies. Once she was a tailor in Boston, but now she has crossed from Earth to the Barrow-lands, a Faerie world embroiled in a bloody civil war between Seelie and Unseelie. Armed with an enchanted and malevolent staff which seeks to bend her to its dark will, and thrust into a deadly realm where it’s hard to distinguish friend from foe, Lara is sure of one thing: her love for Dafydd ap Caerwyn, the Faerie prince who sought her help in solving a royal murder and dousing the flames of war before they consumed the Barrow-lands.

But now Dafydd is missing, perhaps dead, and the Barrow-lands are closer than ever to a final conflagration. Lara has no other choice: she must harness the potent but perilous magic of the staff and her own truthseeking talents, blazing a path to a long-forgotten truth—a truth with the power to save the Barrow-lands or destroy them.

WAYFINDER is the second and last book in the Worldwalker Duology. You have to read book one TRUTHSEEKER to even begin to be able to read book 2. WAYFINDER picks up exactly where TRUTHSEEKER left off. Lara has to get back to the Barrow-lands and save the man she loves as well as save the Barrow-lands from an all out war.

WAYFINDER wrapped the series up nicely. Everyone and everything was led to their conclusion. Lara fights to learn everything she can to master her powers and the staff before its to late. The world that C.E. Murphy has created is complex, well described and full of mystery and danger. I was drawn into the story in TRUTHSEEKER and held until the end of WAYFINDER. All though Lara and Dafydd only knew each other for a short time their relationship was well written and felt real. The action was pretty much constant and the plot moved along at a good pace. Even though the book wrapped everything up nicely I still felt like I could read more at the end. I kinda would like to know what happens next so that is a bit of a bummer. All in all it was a great modern day fairytale. If your looking for something a little different this is a great fantasy for you.

Guest Blog, Review & Giveaway: Mortal Obligation Nichole Chase

UFI welcomes Nichole Chase Author of Mortal Obligation. Thanks for Joining us!!

I am thrilled to be writing a guest post for Urban Fantasy Investigators! I am the author of Mortal Obligation, a young adult urban fantasy set in Savannah, Ga. I moved to South Georgia when I was a teenager and instantly fell in love with the history of this old city. There are so many gorgeous places and rich textures that my imagination immediately ran away with me. Ree, the main character of my novel, grew from a stray thought while driving around the old squares that litter the old down town area.

I’d like to invite you all for a short tour of the area, including a very special island. It’s such a lovely place, you could say that it is a god-send. I brought someone to help make the tour a little more interesting. Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to Roland. He has a long history with this city and the surrounding area. Don’t let his bad-boy good looks fool you. You’ll be more than safe in his hands.

“Hop in my BMW and let the whirlwind tour begin.” Flicking the key fob, a loud beep sings though the square in the middle of City Market. “Most people would take you for a ride on an old fashioned trolley, or maybe on a horse drawn carriage, but I don’t do the trendy stuff. I like things done my way.” Winking a sapphire colored eye at one of the teenagers, she giggles until her mother elbows her. Brushing some of the dark hair out of his eyes, Roland opens a door for the women.

“If you look over there, you can see the old Cotton Exchange. Go down those steep, old stairs to the cobblestone road, and you’ll find yourself on River Street. Lots of shopping down there, if you’re into that. There are some good restaurants, candy shops, and tourist trap style places. If you go down there for dinner, stick to the lighted areas. You’ll probably be safe that way.” Whipping around the corner quickly, someone makes an irritated sound from the backseat. Grinning in the rearview mirror, Roland says, “Hang on to your hats. This is going to be fast.”

“Over there is an antique shop similar to the one I work in when not masquerading as a high school student. I mean, when not at school. My… Aunt owns it.” Turning another corner he points at a building. “That is one of the Bed and Breakfasts that Savannah is famous for. Some people claim that they are haunted. Eh. Maybe, but ghosts aren’t what you should be worried about.”

“Lots of old cemeteries in old Savannah. But you can look at cemeteries anywhere. Trust me—they’re just full of dead people.” Whipping around a slow car he pulled out of the historic district. “Now we go somewhere really worth visiting.” After a much shorter time than it should have taken, they pull up to an old house with a long dock stretching out behind it. “Don’t let the scary house fool you. You’re going to love Sanctus Island.” Leading them down the dock to a sleek boat, he helps them all climb onboard.

“You guys should know that not many people are invited to Sanctus Island. This is one of my favorite places that I have ever lived. The climate is nice, the scenery is gorgeous, and the wildlife is phenomenal.” Jumping onto the dock, he turns and offers his hand to help the ladies off the boat. He closes his eyes briefly and turns his face up to the sky. Looking back at the people behind him he smiles conspiratorially. “It’s almost sundown. Let’s go look at my favorite thing about this island.”

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Silence answers Roland’s question as the tourists soak in the natural beauty of the Georgia coast. Roland nods his head as if agreeing with them. “Too bad Ree isn’t here to share it with us.” His voice is so quiet most of the other people don’t hear him.

Hm. It looks like it might be a little too late to head back to the mainland, but don’t worry. There are a lot of guest rooms at the main house. You’ll be well taken care of there. Just, don’t make any jokes about gods. I have a little leeway, but it’s better to be careful.

Ree will face the darkest form of betrayal before the year is out.

Seventeen year old Ree McKenna has three goals: get through high school, convince her crush she is more than his best friends little sister, and save money for college. Fate, though, has other plans for her. After the untimely death of her older brother, Ree is haunted by dreadful nightmares and terrifying visions. To make matters worse, Ree has started to suspect that something dangerous is stalking her from the shadows.

A night full of frightening surprises leaves Ree with unsettling news. Gifted by the gods with unusual powers, she must devote herself to a battle that could very well lead to not only her death, but the demise of everyone she knows and loves. After all, Ree is the only mortal standing between the Earth and utter darkness.

Set in Savannah, Ga, Mortal Obligation is the first book of The Dark Betrayal Trilogy

I love when a new book that incorporates the Gods and their gifts comes out. I don't know why it intrigues me so much but it does and I enjoy reading the interpretations of the different myths that authors have for their characters and stories.

Ree and her friends had a great mix of personalities. They are all extremely loyal to each other from the beginning. MORTAL OBLIGATION had a great pace to it. The action and training of the teens was well written and engaging. There was some pretty good twists at the end that I in no way saw coming. I enjoyed the love triangle, I feel both of the romantic interests have enough positive and negative things going for them to make things interesting and it added some great jealousy moments to the book. The biggest complaint I had about the book is the ease that which Ree and her friends believed and accepted all the God gifts and roles they are to play in Ree's Destiny. They were mostly like COOL bring it on, I have vampire teeth hahah (very much paraphrased they didn't really sound like that) when I felt they should have been a bit freaked out at what was happening. All in all this was a great debut novel from a new author. I was kept interested throughout the book and I would enjoy reading what comes next.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Review: Blood Rock by Anthony Francis

Blood Rock

Release Date: August 16, 2011

Skindancer Book #2

Dakota Frost is back, and the ink is about to hit the fan-again.

Graffiti comes to life in the dark heart of Atlanta’s oldest cemetery, slaying one of the city’s best loved vampires before the eyes of his friend Dakota Frost. Deadly magick is at work on the city’s walls, challenging even the amazing power of Dakota’s tattoos to contain it. The hungry, graffiti magick loves to kill, and the Edgeworld is no longer safe from its own kind.

Dakota begins a harrowing journey to save those she loves and to discover the truth behind the spreading graffiti-even if that truth offends the vampires, alienates the werekin and creates police suspicion of her every action.

Saving Atlanta may cost her everything, including custody of her “adopted” weretiger daughter, Cinnamon. But failure is not an option. If the graffiti isn’t stopped, Cinnamon could be the next victim.
I absolutely LOVE the covers of both books in the Skindancer series. I have said many times before that I have to like a cover to pick up a book (I know, I know don't judge a book by its cover and all that I just cant help it) and both covers grabbed me with one glance. Dakota Frost isn't your typical girl. She has a death hawk, she wears a lot of leather, has magical tattoos covering most of her body and isn't afraid to tell it like it is. Dakota is defiantly bad ass but she is also has a big soft spot and is extremely caring and protective of those she loves. There is a lot of character, relationship and world development in FROST MOON so I would definitely recommend reading that before you jump into BLOOD ROCK.

BLOOD ROCK starts off right away with action and suspense. The book revolves around some new magical graffiti that is killing vampires, were's and humans. While trying to solve the mystery of the graffiti, Dakota is also adjusting to life as a mother of her "adopted" daughter Cinnamon, it all gets jumbled up together and leads to some stressful situations that puts everything that Dakota has built and worked for in jeopardy.  My only big complaint with the book is the romantic relationship stuff. I wish it would have went a different way and that Dakota was still with the original person she started out with but who knows what will happen in the future. BLOOD ROCK is full of interesting scenes, imaginative magical graffiti, action, suspense and heartache. I enjoy Anthony's writing and his interpretation of magic in the form of Tattoos and graffiti. His characters are well developed and liked or hated like they should be. The relationships between the characters are always real and heartfelt. I hope that the third book doesn't take to long to come out, the series is a great addition to the Urban Fantasy Genre.
