The Hollows Book #12

Witch and day-walking demon Rachel Morgan has managed to save the demonic ever after from shrinking, but at a high cost. Now strange magic is attacking Cincinnati and the Hollows, causing spells to backfire or go horribly wrong, and the truce between the races, between Inderlander and human, is shattering.

Rachel must stop the occurrences before the undead vampire masters who keep the rest of the undead under control are lost and it becomes all-out supernatural war. However, the only way to do so is through the ancient elven wild magic, which carries its own perils.

Rachel has gotten herself into many pickles since the beginning of this series but the pickle she gets into in THE UNDEAD POOL is right up there at the top of the list.  The vampires have lost their minds. Seriously. Rachel kicks butt as usual but we have some heart pounding situations and a huge run in with the Goddess that will leave you with your mouth hanging open

Even though Ivy and Jenks are still very much in this book they are continuing to begin their life on their own that has been coming for the past few books. Its sad but it is going in a way that truly makes sense and I know that no matter what the three of them will always be there for each other. I absolutely love Trent's little girls. I love their personalities, I love the way they interact with Trent and I love the way that Rachel has made it into their lives and the way they act towards her. Kim should do a spin off with them when they are older. I just know those two are going to be hand fulls of entertainment. Ellasbeth continues to be the bitch we all know and hate. There were plenty of interesting moments that she was involved in and although she sucks they were entertaining so I can't hate her that much and hey, she gets what she deserves. Another great thing about THE UNDEAD POOL is that we get to understand Newt a whole lot more. I understand why she is like she is and I kinda like her more for it.

If you have already read EVER AFTER you have an idea of the relationship turn between Rachel and Trent. If you have not read EVER AFTER I suggest you go directly to the store, buy it and devour it as fast as you can because you wont want to miss THE UNDEAD POOL! I can't even begin to describe the amount of sexual tension that is involved in THE UNDEAD POOL. It seriously is out of this world and I refuse to tell you anything more because you must suffer like I did!

The ending leaves us off in a way that we have NO CLUE as to what could possibly happen in the last book of The Hollows Series. Sure we have a few things in play but they could go ANY WAY and I didn't pick up on any clues to help me come to any conclusions which makes me want the last book even worse than I would normally want it. The Hollows Series is seriously a slam dunk and I am so glad to have been on this journey with Rachel and her gang of friends. Bring on book 13 before I explode!

I gave it 5/5 stars

Review: Wakeworld by Kerry Schafer

Wakeworld
Release Date: January 28, 2014
Publisher: ACE
The Between Book #2
ISBN:   0425261247
ISBN13: 9780425261248
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source:Author
Vivian Maylor is trying to hold it together. But her attempts to build a life with the man she loves seem doomed by the dragon inside her yearning to break free. Vivian is a dreamshifter, the last line of defense between reality and the dreamworld, and the only one of her kind.

Weston Jennings also believes he is the only one of his kind. He fears his powers as a dreamshifter, and resists learning to control them. After suffering a tragic loss, Weston heads deep into the woods of the Pacific Northwest to embrace a safe life of solitude. But when a terrible mistake leads to an innocent’s death, his guilt drives him to his former home, where he encounters what he never thought he would find: another shifter.

Now Vivian and Weston must work together to defeat a new threat to the dreamworld.

WAKEWORLD is the second book in the Between series. I was kind of surprised to see it as I felt that BETWEEN ended pretty nicely and that it could have passed as a standalone. I did find BETWEEN to have an interesting world so I thought I would go ahead and give it a try.

I liked that Vivian came across as a stronger character in WAKEWORLD. She just seemed to carry herself better and believes in herself more. The relationship between Vivian and Zee seemed forced and awkward to me. There was never a point that I felt like they were meant for each other. Jared being in the book was weird. If anything Vivian should have just kicked his ass and called it a day. Im not sure how she could be in his presence and not break down somehow. The villain in book 2 just ended up annoying me and the whole her and Zee 'moment' really freaked me out.

I really like the idea of the world that is built but I just couldn't seem to get excited while reading WAKEWORLD. The storyline didn't hold my attention and because of that I had a hard time getting through it.

I gave it 2/5 stars

Guest Blog: A Taste For Killing by H.K. Sterling

UFI welcomes H.K. Sterling Author of A Taste For Killing. Thanks for Joining us!!

Thank you for allowing me to guest post. Today I will be dredging up the past so I can tell you what I learned that is helpful for the present.

I've always been a voracious reader. When I was five or six, I was stuck on Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy books. I felt slighted though, because the Hardy Boys had more adventures in my mind. The Hardy boys were also my first book boyfriend. I'm not sure which one. Either of them would probably do. I loved these series so much I tried to write a Nancy Drew book, but I only got as far as the cover and the first line. What can I say? I was five (or six).

When I was little (yes, I am old now) pamphlets came out in class once a month where we could order books. I was the nerd who went away with an armful every time. Every month it was an argument with my parents because I loved the write-ups so much, I wanted so many of them to read and my parents naturally had limits. And read I did. I discovered wonderful books like The Phantom Tollbooth, A Wrinkle in Time (and the rest of that series), The Outsiders, and so many more.

By age eleven I was heavily into mythology and read up on all the Greek and Roman gods and myths. By sixteen I had discovered Science Fiction and the likes of Ellison, Bradbury, Asimov, Bova, Heinlein, and more kept me busy for the rest of my teenage years. By age twenty I was reading Philip K. Dick, but also reading cross-cultural spirituality books like the Upanishads and The Song of Songs, which I found beautiful. These were a gateway drug into poetry. Suddenly my mind was filled with Arthur Rimbaud, Jorge Borges, Aime Cesaire, e.e. cummings, W.B. Yeats, and many more. I loved them so much I took every poetry and writing class I could in college. I did not major in it though. Somehow I had it stuck in my head that writers made no money and I needed a discipline that would support me while I wrote on the side (I thought then).

As an adult I still read, though not as voraciously because I spend much of my time writing. When I discover a good book now, I savor it like a fine wine. Until this year I also had a dark secret. I thought I was the only person who knew thousands of words and their meanings but had no earthly idea how to pronounce them. That is the flaw that comes from reading voraciously. It was only when I started to interact with other authors that I found this to be a common problem with those who read their hearts out when young. We learned words from context, but no one uses the kind of words we learned, except maybe somewhere in the New York Literati Circles. I learned I am not alone.

If you've made it this far I have some advice. It is just this: Read Anything! Just Read!

P.S. And leave a review.

A Taste For Killing

Mystery and Romance blend together when competing detectives Carolyn Woods and Jack Heart find they are surrounded by murder on every side.

Mystery and Romance blend together when competing detectives Carolyn Woods and Jack Heart are both hired to solve the murder of Pete Wallace, only to realize they are working the same case. To complicate things, Carolyn and Jack have an on again-off again relationship. Then there is Evan Jones, a handsome architect— but he's also a suspect.

Can Carolyn manage to solve the case as more and more murders pile up? Will her relationship with Jack hinder their investigations? And what about Evan Jones? He seems like the perfect man, but could he actually be the murderer? One thing is for sure: someone close to both Carolyn and Jack has A Taste For Killing.

Excerpt:

He had six-pack abs, and I wanted to feel the carbonation. This one dressed like the stereotype of a construction worker, down to the handkerchief he used to wipe sweat off his forehead. I don't know if he or the hot day brought it out, but sweat poured off of me too. He had no interest in me as a person, though. I was invading his territory. Still, I enjoyed the view. For my part, I knew my clothes looked crappy. I didn’t have to wear uniforms anymore, but my street clothes, well they were very—street. So there I stood, a turd in the sun in front of this Adonis. Oh well.

He pointed to a small trailer up a muddy hill. The supervisor I asked to see apparently stayed in there. Stayed, as in never left. Great. Mud. Now I'd be a dried turd in the sun. Adonis went back to digging and I started the trek up the hill. At least I came with boots. Steel toed.

Once I made it to the trailer, I heard an argument going on inside.

"Look, I don't care who you are. The plans are publically filed. Go get them yourself!" yelled someone.

Then I heard a voice I knew. Calm, cool, subversive. "Is there any reason you're being so difficult? A man did die on your watch."

An encounter I hadn’t planned on. Well, at least not until later tonight. I knocked loudly on the door and with my sweetest voice said, "Hello, boys. Am I interrupting something?"

"Great," groused the supervisor. "A party." He appeared to me like another stereotype, puffing on a cigar over a fat jowl line and rotund stomach that threatened to overturn the small desk he was behind. I guess there's a reason for stereotypes. He looked about four hamburgers away from a heart attack.

On a wooden chair in front of the supervisor sat Jack. A fellow independent detective, an ally at times, a competitor...and my on and off lover.

"Well, well, well," he said smiling, but I could tell he wasn’t happy to see me. Not here. It meant we were both working the same case. "Hello, Carolyn. Who hired you?"

"Parents."

"Girlfriend," he answered back.

We stared at each other. Complications.

The supervisor didn’t give a damn and said to me, "Well, missy, I'll tell you the same thing I told this guy." He jerked his thumb around to Jack. "The plans are publically filed and that’s all I have to say about it."

I tried a different tactic. "That’s fine with me. I have no problem going downtown for a copy." I wore my practiced, saccharine smile. "But I wonder, could you tell me the name of the architect? Please?" I smiled again. God, this job sucks at times.

The supervisor sighed. "Jones, Evan Jones."

"Thank you so much," I said, smiling my best smile again. "I'll get out of the way and leave you two boys to...whatever you were doing."

I opened the door to go and started to shut it only to find Jack following me out.

"Sure, flash your tits and get what you want." Boy was he in a bad mood.

"There was no tit flashing in there. Face it, testosterone was not a good choice in that situation."

Jack's response: a grunt.

"Besides," I tried to placate him, "I didn’t get the plans either."

"No, you did one better."

"That's assuming the architect will have anything to do with me and cooperate." A thought occurred to me. "So are you going there too?"

"No, I might as well wait and see what you turn up. Besides, I have my own leads."

"Are you planning to share?" Just call me hopeful. As in full of shit, because that’s where hope always seemed to lead.

"No," he said, still grumpy.

"I see. So it's gonna be like that."

"I guess so."

I felt like such a female. Damn. But I had to ask.

"Are we still on for tonight?"

"Yeah."

I wasn’t convinced but didn’t push it. God, sometimes I hated myself. But we were good together—when it was good—when his competitive edge didn’t get the better of him. Though I was one to talk. I did the same thing at times. Hence our on and off status. But currently we were supposed to be on. So, I kept it light in the spirit of things to come.

"Okay, master detective, I'll leave you to your leads. See ya."

"See ya," he replied, already preoccupied, pondering a piece of paper he'd taken from his pocket.

I made my way down the hill in my muddy boots.

Review: Reflected by Rhiannon Held

Falling in love in a werewolf pack leads to some very bad choices in this new novel from the author of Silver.

Rhiannon Held continues the secret lives of the werewolf packs that live and hunt alongside human society in Reflected, the third book of the series that began with her debut novel, Silver. Silver and her mate Andrew Dare are pack leaders of the entire North American werewolf population, and that makes the more traditional packs in Europe very nervous indeed. It’s getting hard to hide from human surveillance.

Although the conflicts in REFLECTED turned out to be pretty predictable I still enjoyed the next installment in Silvers journey.  Dare is called away and Silver has to hold the pack on her own. They both felt it would be pretty easy but unfortunately things go wrong.

The pack dynamic has changed a lot since SILVER. While TARNISHED was filled with pack politics REFLECTED gets back to the characters with a side of pack politics. Silver and Dare don't get a lot of time together in book 3 and I missed him for most of the book. They are just to awesome together to be separated. When Dare leaves Felicia decides to rebel in the worst way. The way she treated Silver really broke my heart. Silver is forced to once again "un-break" herself and it is so hard to watch her go through the pain that causes.  By the end things have once again changed. Although their relationship needed to change, I wish their conflict had not taken up the whole book. I still really love Susan. She has grown into her pack position and she is a great friend and support to Silver. Anyone that still sees her as human quickly sees otherwise.

I didn't feel like REFLECTED was as strong as the previous books but it was still a smooth, fast, intriguing read. Held's world still draws me in and her writing and characters keeps me reading. I don't see any mention of a book 4, please tell me the series isn't over! I know Silver has her pack and family now but I need more.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars

Review: Taken by Felicia Starr

Taken
Release Date: December 3, 2013

Genre: Urban Fantasy

You must betray your heart and walk amongst the darkness in order to find the truest light. Opening her eyes to an imposing prison of complete darkness, Kasha is accused of possessing powers and abilities she had no previous knowledge of until the moment she comes face to face with herself while meditating. Haunted by memories strung together by lies and deceit, she soon discovers that maybe her beloved grandmother kept a few secrets she hadn't been aware of. Secrets that could be her salvation... or her undoing. As she struggles to control her newfound powers, only time will tell if they will be enough to help her decipher who has imprisoned her or what they want from her. She must search for the answers and the freedom she so desperately desires. Could a handsome guy who vows to help her get away prove to be the man of her dreams... or perhaps her worst nightmare? Not knowing who to trust, she must find a way to escape before she pays the ultimate price and finds herself taken by the darkness.

I won't lie, a good portion of this book can be somewhat depressing. Kasha is kidnapped, has no idea where she is or how she got there, no idea what they truly want and has no clue about the powers they insist she must have. She is kept in complete darkness, she is threatened, abused and has no idea who is lying and telling her the truth. The book jumps into her abduction immediately so the reader slowly learns what the world is like and the characters involved.

It's weird how much you can connect with a character when they are at their worst. It would be horrible to be kidnapped, kept in the dark, scared, and on top of that learn you have powers while trying to hide them from your captures. There were many points in the book that I was asking myself how much longer could she really be kept prisoner but she was a prisoner up until the very end.

This is not a warm and fuzzy book but I enjoyed the relationship between her and one of the secondary characters that she connects with, not so much another. I also kept reading so it did well with keeping my attention. There seemed to be a few slow parts and like I said in the beginning it gets a little depressing that she is held for so long. Not a lot of action happens but the emotions that are emitted throughout the book does a good job of keeping the suspense up. After reading TAKEN I find myself interested in reading about what happens next for the characters.

I gave it 3.5/5 stars
