Guest Blog: Earth Reclaimed Series by Ann Gimpel

UFI welcomes Ann Gimpel. Thanks for Joining us!!

Creating a Setting for Your Characters

Thanks so much for inviting me back to your blog, Urban Fantasy Investigations. I appreciate the support for my books.

I’d love to say I use the same process for every book I write, but I don’t. Many of my books begin with an image, or series of images, that form the basis for the book. I occasionally begin with an empty world, and it tells me what kind of characters it needs. I’ve only rarely begun with a character and formed a world around them.

In the Earth Reclaimed Series, the world came first. It’s a dystopian landscape on an Earth that’s become a battlefield for alien gods and other dark creatures. I needed gutsy, self-contained characters to survive in such a challenging environment, and they came to me. Snort. More than came to me. They battered their way into my head and refused to leave until I told their story.

Aishlinn is a twenty-two year old woman, who’s lost so much she scarcely cares what happens to her next. Rune is a wolf, whose last human bondmate was killed by the enemy. Fionn MacCumhaill is a Celtic god. Like many of his kind, he withdrew from the world, waiting to see if the current mess would blow over. Bella, his raven bondmate could pass for a sharp-tongued harridan. She cares about Fionn, but not much else. The story arc reunites the characters with their basic humanity, but it’s a long, tough journey.

As an aside, this series required some serious research into the Celtic deities, many of whom I’d forgotten. And dragons. I researched them too!

One of the things I love about urban fantasy, as opposed to high fantasy, is it’s set in the “real” world. No odd names for things. No triple moons transiting the sky. My favorite urban fantasies feel so real, they could actually happen. That hunk living next door could be a closet Celtic god, who’s been alive for millennia.

I’m also wretchedly old-fashioned. I think we lost something when our lives got very easy. There’s not much challenge left anymore, unless we create it. That’s likely why I’ve had a lifelong love affair with traveling the backcountry with a pack, where I have to rely on my wits. I’ve been cold, lost, and out of food, but I feel ever so much more alive when I get back to civilization.

I give my characters similar challenges. They need wits, creativity, and courage to survive to the next chapter. That their worlds hold deadly surprises, ups the ante. Characters change and grow over the course of their story. Hell, so does the author, for that fact. I was pleased by how this series grew over the months I spent writing it and even more pleased I’m now the mistress of its fate as its publisher as well as its author.

How about the rest of you writers out there. Do you create characters first, or worlds? Or do they come to you as a unit that refuses to be separated? And for you readers. What draws you into a book, hooks you, and doesn’t let you go?

Earth's Requiem
Earth Reclaimed #1

Resilient, kickass, and determined, Aislinn's walled herself off from anything that might make her feel again. Until a wolf picks her for a bond mate and a Celtic god rises out of legend to claim her for his own.

Aislinn Lenear lost her anthropologist father high in the Bolivian Andes. Her mother, crazy with grief that muted her magic, was marched into a radioactive vortex by dark creatures and killed. Three years later, stripped of every illusion that ever comforted her, twenty-two year old Aislinn is one resilient, kickass woman with a take no prisoners attitude. In a world turned upside down, where virtually nothing familiar is left, she’s conscripted to fight the dark gods responsible for her father’s death. Battling evil on her own terms, Aislinn walls herself off from anything that might make her feel again in this compelling dystopian urban fantasy.

Fionn MacCumhaill, Celtic god of wisdom, protection, and divination has been laying low since the dark gods stormed Earth. He and his fellow Celts decided to wait them out. After all, three years is nothing compared to their long lives. On a clear winter day, Aislinn walks into his life and suddenly all bets are off. Awed by her courage, he stakes his claim to her and to an Earth he's willing to fight for.

Aislinn’s not so easily convinced. Fionn’s one gorgeous man, but she has a world to save. Emotional entanglements will only get in her way. Letting a wolf into her life was hard. Letting love in may well prove impossible.

Earth's Blood
Earth Reclaimed #2
Amazon
Clinging to their courage in a crumbling world, Aislinn and Fionn vow to save Earth, no matter what it takes.

In a post-apocalyptic world where most people have been slaughtered, the Celtic gods and a few humans with magic are all that stand between survival and Earth falling into chaos. The combination of dark sorcery leveraged by the enemy is daunting. Destruction is all but certain if the small enclaves of humans who are left can’t get past their distrust of the Celts.

Captured by the enemy, Aislinn Lenear wonders if she’ll ever see her bond wolf or Fionn, a Celtic god, again. She’s had nothing but her wits to rely on for years. They haven’t failed her yet, but escape from her current predicament seems remote.

An enticing blend of dystopian urban fantasy and romance, this second volume of the Earth Reclaimed Series provides fertile ground for Aislinn and Fionn’s relationship to deepen. Headstrong and independent, the pair run up against each other’s demands time and time again. Fireworks spark. In the end, they learn to savor every moment in a bittersweet world where each day may well be the last.

Earth's Hope
Earth Reclaimed #3
Amazon
Power so old, deep, and chilling it hurts to think about it will overrun Earth if nothing changes. Targeted, furious, and fighting back, Aislinn runs wide open, gathering allies and putting her life on the line.

Aislinn Lenear has traveled a long road since the dark gods invaded Earth better than three years ago. After seeing her father slaughtered in front of her, and her mother sink into madness, Aislinn built strong walls around her heart. First her bond wolf, and then Fionn MacCumhaill, changed all that, but she and Fionn are far from home free.

Four of the six dark gods are still sowing destruction, and they’ve joined forces with Lemurians, a desperate lot, running just ahead of the tide of their own mortality. In a bold move, they try to coopt a group of young dragons, and very nearly succeed. Dewi, the Celtic dragon god, and Nidhogg, the Norse dragon god, banish their brood to the dragons’ home world, but they refuse to stay put.

In a fast-paced, tension-riddled closure to this dystopian, urban fantasy series, Earth's Hope sweeps from Ireland to the Greek Islands to the Pacific Northwest to borderworlds where the dark gods live. Fionn’s and Aislinn’s relationship is strained to the breaking point as they struggle to work together without tearing one another to bits. Fionn is used to being obeyed without question, but Aislinn won’t dance to his tune. If they can find their way, there may be hope for a ravaged Earth.

Captivated
Courts of Light and Darkness, #1
Amazon US  Amazon UK
After her family was killed by a dark elf, mercenary Honora Butler’s purpose is the disposal of wicked faeries, elves, and other Unseelie beings, but she’ll find herself questioning her mission when she meets Brennan, a dark elf who doesn’t conform to what she believed his kind were like.

Brennan O’Niall doesn’t know what it is about Honora that makes him crave her, but he wants to find out. However, when she’s charged with the murder of a friend, he’ll have to discover the truth and decide just how much she means to him.

Excerpt from Captivated:

Gritting her teeth, Honora Butler sneaked farther into the dark, snowy forest. Danger lurked within the shadows, and she would kill or be killed. Death didn’t intimidate her anymore. She knew it too well.

Everyone she’d loved had been taken from her. The only thing she cared about now was destroying those who had ruined her life.

Snow crunched beneath the soles of her knee-high leather boots. The risks of killing those monsters were great, but she didn’t care. When she was young, the Mercenary Guild had taken her in. They’d seen her abilities and her determination. They’d trained her, given her a chance when she’d wanted only to die, and now she did what she bloody well could to make sure the dark beings of the Unseelie Court hurt no one else.

A horrified scream erupted ahead, beckoning her deeper into the forest. It had to have been caused by her prey. Picking up her pace, she pulled a throwing knife from its sheath. Her magic surged into the blade, filling it with power and making the metal white-hot.

The trees broke into a clearing. The cause of the cries stood in the dirt road. A woman cowered on the ground while a short, stocky man dressed in blood red with a matching hat sneered at her. He looked to be having far too good a time.

“I have a husband and kids. Please, don’t hurt me,” the woman whimpered. “My master...he’ll—”

The Fear Dearg snorted and crossed his arms in front of him. Stroking his bushy beard, he stared down his crooked nose at the terrified woman as if pondering what to do first.

Honora doubted the woman was in immediate danger. The Red Man mostly engaged in cruel pranks on those he sought, but that wouldn’t stop her from killing him. Her mission in life was to rid the world of malevolence. No matter what.

She slid from the trees, taking one quiet step after another. “Na dean maggadh fum,” she said. Those words, ‘Do not mock me,’ were the best chance she had to take him down without a problem.

The Fear Dearg jerked his gaze to Honora. His lips curled back into a snarl at the interruption. “So be it. Now go on. Get out of here. Can’t you see I’m busy?” He stared at her blankly, waiting. “What? You want my favor and prosperity? One of those bold adventurers? Wait for your turn.”

Just like that, he returned his focus to the woman, grabbing for her dress.

With a snap of her wrist, Honora sent the throwing knife sailing through the air. A wash of blood arced in a thick spray as the Fear Dearg collapsed, the knife lodged between his eyes.

Shrieking, the woman scurried backwards from the corpse. Her eyes were wide and horrified at the sight of the dead faerie. “What have you done?” she asked, glancing Honora’s way. Shaking her head, she reached for her large basket with foodstuffs that lay on its side. Most of the food had fallen out, but the woman didn’t bother gathering it. She just took the basket, then ran off down the dirt road.

What had that been about?

Honora watched the woman until she disappeared around the curve of the path. She walked over to the dead Red Man, then tugged her blade out of his skull. It came away easily, blood dripping off it in great crimson drops. She wiped it clean on his jacket before tucking the knife back in its sheath.

Her stomach rumbled. On the ground was an unsoiled loaf of bread from the woman’s fallen food. She stripped off her bloody gloves and crouched. After brushing off a few leaves, she tore a piece from it and lifted it to her lips.

In the distance, she heard a faint noise like that of a large flock of birds beating their wings. That couldn’t be right. Birds weren’t typically active at night there. Yet the sound grew louder.

The sudden realization of what it was punched her in the gut. She dropped the bread and raced after the woman. Honora needed to find the safety of shelter. She couldn’t be out here when the Sluagh—restless spirits of the dead—flew over. What they did was worse than death. They captured their victims’ souls.

Behind her, the cries became impossibly louder. She didn’t have much time at all. She had yet to spot any homes or places to hide and knew if she were spotted, she would be connected with the murder of the Fear Dearg. They’d hunt her down. She wouldn’t be safe unless she found somewhere soon.

For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way...

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

I'm not sure why, but I didn't think we would be seeing Charles and Anna again in their own book, so DEAD HEAT was a nice surprise to receive for review. Anna and Charles head to Arizona to buy Anna her own horse. Things take a turn when family members of those they are visiting are attacked by the Fae. DEAD HEAT dives into Charles' past and introducing us to some of the very few humans he calls friends.

I loved watching Anna hold up against an old love of Charles that tried very hard to be rude to her and push her down. She really can hold her own and she has zero worries when it comes to Charles and her relationship. It was great watching Charles open up and interact with his old friend. We get to see a side of him that we don't often see and I think Anna was even a bit surprised and glad to be able to witness it. The relationship between the two is strong and it was great to see them working as a team.

There is plenty of action involved in DEAD HEAT. Charles has a bit of a hard time letting Anna help as he doesn't want her to get hurt, but I think she did a really good job of showing him she can take care of herself while also letting others know when she needs help. She really kicked butt. There is a lot of mystery involved in the case they are working. I didn't have a clue what was going on until they did. The plot moves at a fast pace and I really enjoyed every moment of it.

Whether you decide to start out reading the Alpha & Omega series or the Mercy Thompson series you should give Patricia Briggs a try. She is one of my top 10 favorite authors and I think you'll have no issues falling in love with her writing.

I gave it 5/5 stars

The Danger of Destiny
Mystwalker #4

WHY WHISTLE IN THE DARK…

There are very few days off when you’re on an epic quest. Believe me, I know. I’m Hedi Peacock—one half Fae, the other Were—and if being a half-breed with one foot in each world isn’t tough enough to manage, there are the four chambers of my heart to consider. The one who holds the strings? Robson Trowbridge, the Alpha of Creemore. If I had my way, he and I would be locked in a bedroom, for eternity, but a pressing family matter needs my attention. It’s true what they say: A woman’s work is never done.

WHEN YOU CAN HOWL AT THE MOON?

My twin brother is being held captive by the Old Mage in another realm. Lo and behold, as soon as Trowbridge and I arrive in Merenwyn, we’re separated in spectacular, dramatic fashion—and I’m left to figure out how to maintain the fragile balance between my Fae magic and my wolf’s blood in a realm that cries to both. Not easy, particularly when I'm keeping an iron-grip on my temper so as not to dispatch with extreme prejudice the odd wizard or smart-mouthed mutt servant who crosses my path. My mama never told me there’d be days like these, but I’m not going down without a fight…or my mate.
Excerpt:

You would think that the two of us would have had some sort of discussion about the Raha’ells before this. But we hadn’t. Our landing in this realm had been abrupt and on the heels of near disaster. Since then, we’d been on the move and it hadn’t come up.

Okay, I’ll own to not being terribly keen about opening a topic that touched on the fact that I had sent my lover to Merenwyn for nine numbing years. A lesser man wouldn’t have survived exile to a realm that hunts wolves. However, my Trowbridge had thrived, discovering unsuspected leadership qualities as the Alpha of the Raha’ells. Under his tutelage, the dissident pack’s guerilla warfare tactics had sharpened and their war on the ruling Fae had evolved from a fringe irritation to a real threat.

It was a given that Trowbridge would rise to the top of the Fae’s wanted list. Eventually, he was captured and brought to the Spectacle grounds, a prison within the Fae castle that serves as a theater of death for those with wolf blood. Executions are scheduled for full moons and well attended by the Fae. After all, it’s a fi ne spectacle for those in the stands— gladiator games played without any weapons. Death was inevitable for a wolf; the only thing left to chance and self- will was the length of time it took to die. I’ll be forever grateful that Lexi kidnapped Trowbridge and led him out of those killing grounds.

But it had looked bad.

It had appeared that the Son of Lukynae had turned his back on his people.

Trowbridge squeezed my arms, then stood.

“What will happen if we run into them?” I asked. Would the Raha’ells tear him apart limb by limb? Feast on his internal organs? Use his head to play soccer?

Goddess, my imagination is too vivid.

For a long time, he said nothing. “A cowardly Alpha who turned his back on his people— there’s no coming back from that. They’d go to town on me and they’d have every
right to do it.”

“You’re not a coward. You were under Lexi’s compulsion spell. You would never have—”

“Left some of my pack to die at the Spectacle? Walked right out of that hellhole with my pack’s worst enemy? That’s what I did. Doesn’t really matter why I did it.”

Note to self: see a Raha’ell, run like hell. “What are our chances of encountering them?”

“I know their hunting grounds. I know which trails they take, and where they choose to camp down for the night. We’ve stayed clear of those areas and the wind’s been in our favor. As long as we stick close to the river, we should be all right.”

I hate the word “should.”

“I doubt we have anything to worry about,” I heard him say.

Not a fan of the word “doubt” either.

He walked away, turning his back to me to meditate on the land behind us. We’d been following the edge of what had to be a very long escarpment. Behind us were mountains. Big ones. A long range of the type that adventure seekers flock to. Take Everest, K2, Mount Ranier, and Mont Blanc and throw in some of their craggy cousins.

“What are you thinking?” I asked, hoping it didn’t involve
 scaling K2.

He turned back to study me. Rubbing a hand over his bristled hair, he shook his head at my jersey- wrapped feet. “Jesus, I wish we had shoes for you.”

“You’re not wearing any.”

“I’m—”

“Used to this place.”

“I was going to say that my feet are like leather.” He walked back to me and sank into another squat. Two large, warm paws reached to cup my jaw again. Blue eyes surveyed mine. I read approval and respect. Love and worry. “We’ll take a rest here.” My mouth opened to issue the usual lie about being “perfectly all right,” and he said, “We both need it, sweetheart.”

“I can take whatever’s coming, Trowbridge,” I said, and found, to my surprise, that I meant it.

His expression grew tender and he shook his head.

“When are you going to stop calling me Trowbridge?”

“The day I find a better name for you.”

He grinned, and he was Robbie Trowbridge again. The guy who played a guitar and had long hair, instead of this buzz cut that I couldn’t reconcile myself to. I studied him, taking in the gaunt beauty of his face. Then I finally said what I should have said several hours ago. “Thank you for following me back to this realm, mate.”

His thumb stroked my bottom lip.

“Open,” he said, tilting my jaw upward.

My tense smile softened into my Lolita come- hither. My lids lowered and my mouth parted, ready for his kiss. But instead of lips that could be either hard or warm, I felt the intrusion of a stick of wood that tasted like Trowbridge and bitter bark sliding into my mouth.

I opened my eyes.

Blue ones gleamed at me. “Chew, sweetheart. It will keep the hunger away.”

Guest Blog: Fortune's Blight by Evie Manieri

UFI welcomes Author Evie Manieri. Thanks for Joining us!!

Teenage Garage Sale

My mother sold our house about a year after I graduated college, and since I was living in a Brooklyn apartment at the time I wasn’t able to snag much from the jaws of the many yard sales she held. It’s nice not to be saddled with a lot of cardboard boxes I’ll never open but every now and then I’ll think of something I wish I still had, like the little wooden TARDIS I built in our basement out of wood scraps or the Scholastic book about magical fudge that turns kids into squirrels. (Ruth Chewy’s No Such Thing as a Witch. I googled it the other day to make sure it hadn’t been some chicken-pox-induced hallucination.) Here are the listings for some of the things I’m very glad are gone forever:

Cassette tape, Journey’s Escape
Makes a loud hissing sound on most tracks due to excessive wear, particularly “Separate Ways”. Will probably snap completely after about a dozen more plays. Case only has one hinge. Insert a little stained with the tears of unrequited love. Someday love WILL find you.
$0.10

Hand-painted toy chest with high school theater mementos
Random costume pieces, a pair of broken “character shoes” with four coats of chipped paint, programs, photocopied scripts with one character’s lines highlighted and marked up with stage directions, smeared tubs and sticks of makeup with broken or missing lids, dust of dried roses. Distinctive smell of water-based paints and sawdust. Bonus: Wooden toy chest built in the 1970s includes lid weighing approximately 80 lbs. Hinges include no safety mechanism and operate at roughly the speed of a guillotine. Responsible for at least 4 undiagnosed concussions.
$10.00

Prom dress
Violet with a lavender lamé drape, off-the-shoulder, fitted bodice. Zipper in perfect condition. No stains, rips or holes. Gay-prom-date approved. Excellent for executing pre-choreographed dance routines and getting home by midnight with no regrets.
$25.00

10-speed bike, yellow, banana seat, good condition
Used mainly to ride back and forth in front of the house of a boy who lived about ten blocks away in the hopes he’d be out in his front yard to see me go by. Rubber handgrips may still be sweaty. Price reflects 100% success rate in enticing high school boys with freckles named Chris.
$5,000.00

Fortune's Blight
Shattered Kingdoms #2
The second book in a compelling epic fantasy series takes place after the Shadari revolution, as danger beckons across the sea—a stirring adventure in the vein of Karen Miller and Robin Hobb.

Victory for the Shadari rebels has come at a terrible price. Hardship, superstition, and petty feuds poison King Daryan’s young reign, and entire families are vanishing without a trace. Help is nowhere to be found, for their Nomas allies have troubles of their own and the Mongrel, plagued by the sins of her violent past, has disappeared.

While Daryan struggles to maintain the peace, Eofar and Rho are racing to their northern homeland to plead—or fight—for the Shadar’s independence. But Norland has changed, and they soon find themselves embroiled in the court politics of an empire about to implode. Meanwhile, the Mongrel’s path carries her deep into Norland’s frozen wastes to redeem a promise—one that forces her into the heart of the growing conflict.

As the foundations of the two farflung countries begin to crack, an enigmatic figure watches from a tower room in Ravindal Castle. She is old, and a prisoner, but her reach is long, and her patience is about to be rewarded...
Praise for Evie Manieri

“Manieri’s BLOOD’S PRIDE, the first book in
the new Shattered Kingdoms series, is the perfect mix of romance, family ties, betrayals and agonizing dilemmas…The world created by Manieri is one of love, treachery and intrigue that will keep the audience hanging on until the very last page.”
-- RT Book Reviews

“The setting is what sells me on this book:
quasi-Medieval Mediterranean region. Just as with Indian fantasy, I think this subgenre is a really ignored one, and it’s fantastic that Evie Manieri is going to be exploring it in this novel.”
-- io9.com Most Anticipated Releases for 2013

“This hefty fantasy, first in a series from debut author Manieri, presents the tangled dynamics of two cultures at war with each other and within themselves….Plot twists, romantic entanglements, and political rivalries make for lots of melodrama.”

A vampire never gets old. But neither do his enemies. When a figure from Ethan's dark past makes a splashy debut in Chicago, Merit and her Master don't know whether he's friend or foe. But they'll have to figure out soon, because trouble is brewing in the Windy City.

At an exclusive society soiree attended by the upper echelons of the human and supernatural worlds, Merit and Ethan barely stop the assassination of a guest. When the target turns out to be a shady businessman with a criminal edge, Merit suspects a human vendetta. But the assassins have fangs....

The connections to Chicago's Houses go deeper than Merit knows, and even one wrong move could be her last....

What can you really say when one of your top 10 favorite series reaches its 11th book? Not a whole lot that you haven't said in previous reviews, but enough to tell you that it added to the overall series.

Ethan's past has come back to haunt him. Ethan and Merit have to get to the bottom of things before it tears their house apart. I really loved that Ethan and Merit's relationship didn't take any huge hits in DARK DEBT. A lot of the books in the Chicagoland Vampire Series has them on the brink of breaking up, not trusting each other or questioning the others decisions. They have grown into a great team unit and them working together gets way more done than when they are on the opposite side of things.

All of the usual characters are involved and we even get to see Morgan again. Although I don't particularly care for him much, I feel he has grown quite a bit since we first met him. His house is at the forefront of some of the major conflicts in DARK DEBT and it was nice to see him at the table accepting help instead of being a stubborn jerk. Mallory & Catcher brought a whole lot to DARK DEBT. They even stayed at Cadogan House, which tells you how much Mallory has grown back into a person that Merit and Ethan can again trust. They both had a big part in helping resolve the conflict that were brought to the houses attention and I think having them there was one of my favorite parts of the book. I usually like Jonah, but he really disappointed me in DARK DEBT. I'm not sure that his and Merit's friendship will ever be the same.

I don't want this series to end, but I really really want the predictions to finally come in to play. I want to see them play out and not in this is the last book, here is a paragraph of the future kind of way. Having said that, there was a lot of growth in book 11 relationship wise, character wise and past hurt wise and I, as usual, will be waiting for the next book.

I gave it 4/5 stars
