As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black is responsible for escorting the souls of the dearly departed to the afterlife. It's a 24/7 job with a lousy benefits package.

Maddy's position may come with magical powers and an impressive wingspan, but it doesn't pay the bills. And then there are her infuriating boss, tenant woes, and a cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle to contend with.

Things start looking up, though, when tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in Maddy's building. It's probably just a coincidence that as soon as he moves in demons appear on the front lawn. But when an unholy monster is unleashed upon the streets of Chicago, Maddy discovers powers she never knew she possessed. Powers linked to a family legacy of tarnished halos.

Powers that place her directly between the light of Heaven and the fires of Hell...

Christina Henry did a fantastic job of writing a unique and interesting novel. I loved the mythology with the all the reaper business. There was tons of action. I loved Madeline's personality, she is independent, funny, witty, sassy, sarcastic, and knew how to stand her ground all wrapped up in a 32 year old that doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut at the most important times. I love books with gargoyle's in it. Beezle was the perfect little guardian that made me smile every time he was in the room with his snarky, smart alec comments. Gabriel shows up when all the chaos starts and brings a great addition to the book. There is tons of conflict with him wanting Maddy but not feeling its appropriate to be with her because of who he is and what he does, Christina Henry really did well with making it all believable.  I really enjoyed reading this and look forward to Henry's next book in the series Black Night.

I gave it 4.5/5 stars

  1. That is about what Athenna said about the book. Not that I don't trust her word for it but it's good to know more people enjoyed this book :-D
