Interview & Giveaway: Banewolf by Eden Ashley

UFI welcomes Eden Ashley. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I have really big feet for a girl. Size 10. That’s a 41 stomper in European sizes.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I’m a bit of a television addict. Seriously. I can spend an entire weekend shuffling from my couch to the bathroom, binge watching whatever syfy/paranormal series that has grabbed my attention. Last month, it was Haven. Lately, it’s been Bitten and True Blood.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I love it when characters come to life in my mind to such an extent that I can make them feel just as real to readers.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not really. I only need coffee! Oh and I can’t write in the morning or during midday. Apparently my muse doesn’t wake up until nightfall.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

The Anita Blake series got me started in my love of paranormal. Chronicles of the Warland is probably my favorite series to date. It’s more of a fantasy read with light paranormal elements.

How would you pitch Banewolf to someone who has not heard of it before?

Banewolf continues the story of Kali and Rhane, young and ancient lovers who are embattled in the struggle of their lives to preserve their love and freedom. Both are threatened due to sins past and enemies who crave the powers possessed between them. If Kali and Rhane are to survive, their bond must be unbreakable.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that Banewolf is set in?

It’s a juxtaposition of the real world and fantasy. Kali goes to a normal high school like a normal teenager and works at an archaeology firm part-time. The fantasy/paranormal elements are introduced via the characters themselves and the unique mythology that explains their origins and history. Kali and Rhane are neither nor human, nor vampire, nor werewolf, fairy, nor witch. They are something completely different.

Do you have a favorite scene in Banewolf?

Banewolf is full of so many great scenes I loved writing that it’s hard to pick a favorite. If forced to choose, I would have to say the end scene where *spoilers*spoilers*spoilers.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I love writing York’s scenes. With his character, I can just let go and let loose all the snarky humor, sexism, and dark humor to my heart’s content! He’s so bad, but for some reason, readers still love him.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

The fourth and final book of the series, Primed Son, has a late 2015 release planned. I’ve also got another fantasy/paranormal novel not at all related to the Dark Siren series in the works. It will be a standalone novel, should be finished and hopefully published in 2015. Fingers crossed!

Cynic, realist, and hopeless romantic all rolled into one, Eden was born and raised in a small, sunny town in South Carolina, but thunderstorms have inspired her best ideas. There are few things she loves more than curling up with a good book and a cup of coffee on a rainy day, (except maybe chocolate cake. She loves cake.) often reading into the wee hours of morning when something really grabs her attention. She pretty much loves anything with supernatural elements, so writing paranormal romance and fantasy romance seems to be a natural fit.

New enemies are made.

New allies must be forged.

Kali is beginning to regain her memories. In doing so, she discovers old secrets and betrayals that threaten to unravel her present and shake the foundation for Rhane’s belief in her innocence. While her maturing abilities present unique challenges, a bigger problem arises when Kali learns her ex-boyfriend has made a misguided deal with the enemy in order to win her back—a decision that may ultimately cost him his humanity.

Keeping Kali safe has become a full time job for Rhane. And struggling to gain control of the immortal Banewolf isn’t making that task any easier. The power to eliminate the growing threat against Kali lies at Rhane’s fingertips, but using it means risking his friends to the insatiable blood lust of a monster. So Rhane is forced to forge a shaky alliance with creatures he has sworn to destroy. Despite these new allies, the danger pressing on their borders intensifies, culminating in a heartbreaking and shocking finale.

The strength of the bond between young and ancient lovers will be tested…and if Kali and Rhane are to survive, they must find a way to be unbreakable.

Excerpt:

I Want You to Remember…

After seeing the Cal who wasn’t Cal, Kali’s mind was far too harried to focus on class. Skipping the last block of the day, she went to the swimming pool and sat at the bottom for a long time. Her eyes were closed. Her body was motionless. The pressure of the water became a loving caress, helping to relax everything except her mind. Those anxious thoughts just wouldn’t let go. Even with all Rhane had revealed, the past remained hidden like it had never existed.

But you didn’t forget.

That was right. An entire lifetime…taken. And it wasn’t just her life with Rhane. Kali had lived well over a dozen lives in stolen human bodies. Yet she couldn’t remember a single one of them. Each of those little girls had been stripped from the arms of a family who loved them, only to be replaced by a soul-sucking, fire-setting siren. And for what reason? If Rhane knew, he wasn’t telling. Why won’t he talk to me? I’ve proven my trust.

Well, she amended the thought. I did push him away at first, but only for like fifteen minutes. Then Gabriel showed up and started ripping more of my life to pieces.

Kali took a breath and then another, but not with her lungs. Her skin absorbed oxygen from the water and exchanged it for carbon dioxide waste in her blood. The process didn’t come automatically. It took a lot of focus to make underwater breathing happen. In her two weeks on the lam, she’d discovered this new talent. And it had proven very useful, practically allowing her to live in the water. Holding her breath was certainly easier, but that came with time limits. After twenty minutes, she had to surface.

She was determined to master underwater breathing. Concentrating on the task left her brain severely limited in the number of other things it could worry about. And that was a plus.

Feeling the faintest tremble in the water, she opened her eyes. The lights were flickering. After a few cycles of an ebbing and surging glow, they went out completely. She tried not to panic in the darkness, expecting the underwater lighting to illuminate soon. But instead, there came a muted thud. All of the lights suddenly flooded the pool arena. And Kali screamed.

Bodies were everywhere. Hundreds of them littered the swimming pool floor. Parts of their skin were burned. Charred chunks broke apart from decaying flesh. Tentacles of black liquid snaked into the water. The body of a child rose up, a bloated mass set adrift in a nonexistent current. Kali stared into the film of the corpse’s dead eyes with absolute horror. Black hair floated around his head in a dark halo of death. Even with blanched, greying and puckered skin, Kali saw in the child a startling resemblance to Rhane. Bubbles spurted from her mouth as she screamed again.

She kicked hard, trying to get as far away from the corpse as fast as she could. When her back slammed into solid concrete, she turned to scramble up the pool wall. Fingers slipping on the wet ledge, she finally managed to pull herself out and flop onto her stomach. Trembling with a dozen more screams welled up inside, Kali shook with the effort of not releasing them.

Pushing to her feet, she looked down into the water, needing desperately to believe she was not going crazy. There were no dead people. There was no dead boy. The pool was empty.

#

Icy water pounded from the showerhead, streaming into her eyes as it washed the chlorine from her body. All Kali could see was the boy. His lifeless face floating before hers, dark and grey and distorted in death. It took both hands to smother her sobs. She couldn’t understand what was happening. Was it possible that the vision was a real memory like the nightmares of the horseman had been real memories?

The lights in the shower room flickered and went out just as they had in the pool auditorium. Her breath caught in her chest as she waited for what would happen next. She didn’t have to wait long.
“Kalista,” a male voice sighed into the darkness.

She backed away. She was naked and blind. And in the shower was a stranger who probably meant her harm. The vulnerable state made Kali’s movements very clumsy.

“Darkesong.”

This time the voice was closer. So close, she could feel the whisper against her skin. She knew it was the thing pretending to be Cal. Kali bit her lip. She was too frightened to scream. But screaming wouldn’t have helped anyway.

At first, his touch was light. Kali reacted, flinching away violently. Then “Cal” grabbed her. He was an irresistible force shoving her against the wet shower wall. His hard body pressed against hers. The heat from him completely dispelled the cold that fell around them.

Kali felt his face against her skin. His hot breath steamed next to her cheek.

“Don’t,” she whispered.

Strong fingers slipped around her throat, but their hold was gentle. The lights partially returned, and she could see him. Physically, everything was the same…except for the eyes. Gone was the shocking blue of Cal’s stormy stare. In its place were two red orbs that reflected abnormally in the dim light. She would have recognized those eyes anywhere.

“Gabriel.”

He nodded. His body still had her pinned. His right hand grasped her throat, while the other rested idly against the wall. She waited for him to say or do something, but he didn’t. Nothing happened. Open malice and rage emanated from Gabriel’s still form, but Kali wasn’t entirely sure those emotions were aimed at her.

She inhaled a shaky breath. The action squashed her breasts against his chest. “What did you do to Cal?”

Another unnerving smile slashed his face. “He’s still here.”

“What do you want?”

Pressing his nose into the curve of her neck, Gabriel inhaled a dramatic whiff of her scent. Trembling, Kali tried to push away, wedging her body painfully into the wall. When Gabriel’s left hand moved, she went rigid. But the hand never touched her. It hovered next to her head, holding a tiny yellow stone.

“I want to help you remember.”

The events that followed would remain a blur of varying shades of grey darkness for some time. When Kali came to, she was standing in the rain, completely drenched. Rhane stood in front of her, lips moving soundlessly as he shouted, the words swept away by an unforgiving wind. She had never seen his eyes so black or so deadly focused as he leveled a gun directly over her heart.

First Twelve Chapters of Cori McCarthy's Breaking Sky FREE

Breaking Sky
Sourcebooks Fire
ISBN 9781492601418
March 2015

In this high-flying, adrenaline-fueled thriller, America’s best hope is the elite teen fighter pilots of the United Star Academy.

“The author's storytelling is incredibly cinematic, equally adept at capturing extended flight sequences and Chase's interpersonal struggles. Emotions run high toward the novel's end, and the author isn't afraid to play a bit rough, making this feel less like a novel capitalizing on current trends and more like a great story being told in a very cool way. Smart, exciting, confident—and quite possibly the next Big Thing.” – Kirkus Reviews

Fly to the last drop of fuel. Fight to the last drop of blood.

Showoff. Reckless. Maverick. Chase Harcourt, call sign “Nyx”, isn’t one to play it safe. In the year 2048, America is locked in a cold war – and the country’s best hope is the elite teen fighter pilots of the United Star Academy. Chase is one of only two daredevil pilots chosen to fly an experimental “Streaker” jet. But few know the pain and loneliness of her past. All anyone cares about is that Chase aces the upcoming Streaker trials, proving the prototype jet can knock the enemy out of the sky.
But as the world tilts toward war, Chase cracks open a military secret. There’s a third Streaker, whose young hotshot pilot, Tristan, can match her on the ground and in the clouds. And Chase doesn’t play well with others. But to save her country, she may just have to put her life in the hands of the competition.

Cori McCarthy’s taut, romantic, action adventure will shoot your pulse straight into overdrive with her brilliantly imagined and frighteningly possible future.

How To Claim Your Dragon...

As the head of security of Vegas's Crown Jewel casino―and its hidden dragonshifter sanctuary―ice dragon Darius Dachien commands respect. Unfortunately, that respect isn't always reciprocated. In fact, when it comes to the stunning Mei Chen, hostility might be a better word. Which makes things even harder for Darius, since Mei is his dragon mate. Without her, his dragon form is fading fast...and once lost, will be gone forever.
Mei can't deny the fierce chemistry that simmers between them. If Darius were ever to discover who―or rather, what―she really is, she wouldn't just lose him, but her place with the dragonshifters. The moment Mei's past comes crashing into her present, she realizes her time for secrets has ended. Now she must reveal her true self...and risk both her life and her heart with the one man who could destroy her.

We FINALLY get Mei and Darius's story in DRAGON HER BACK. It was nice to finally understand why Mei was pushing Darius away and get to know them both better.

Mei was never my favorite secondary character. She comes off pretty hard and cold and I really didn't like how she was pushing Darius away even though his dragon was fading. I was relieved when I realized that she didn't KNOW that his dragon was fading and she in fact cared a lot about that fact. I am not sure if I just assumed before or if that is a spoiler so I apologize now if no one else knew that either. I didn't really have an opinion of Darius before DRAGON HER BACK. I felt sorry for him for having a mate that didn't seem to want him, but that was about all. I was really surprised at how vulnerable Mei was throughout most of the book. She ended up confiding in Darius pretty quickly and didn't drag it out until it was too late, which was nice. It was great to watch them finally come together as a team (although it wasn't always smooth).

There were a few things I didn't understand and they're bugging the heck out of me. Why did the woman in the casino smell like Darius? Doesn't something like that only happen if they have sex? If so, wtf? Don't get it. Also Lana. She was awful and refused to help Mei when she was was obviously in trouble. Why wasn't this brought up again? Both situations really left a bad taste in my mouth and it would have been nice if we got more answers and closure from them.

One of the things I have enjoyed about all of the books in this series is that they are all shorter, fast paced, and still manage to convey a complete story. Whose love story will be next? Could it be Jane?

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview: No Angel by Pippa Jay

UFI welcomes Pippa Jay. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

My nickname as a teen was Dormouse for my habit of curling up in a nest of blankets when sleeping.

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I love to watch and read scifi, do some sewing (mostly cosplay outfits), draw a bit, make graphics and mock up covers for my books, sing, do freestyle street dance for fitness, spend time with my family, and I have a pet leopard gecko and five bantam chickens to look after.

What is your favorite part of writing?

Creating new worlds. Honestly, who wouldn’t enjoy that?!

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not really. I’m a pantser, and my writing method is chaotic and non-linear, so it’s a case of take my new shiny idea and get stuck in.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I just read Scorched by Erica Hayes (Superhero/UF), which I really enjoyed. Also loved the Embers series by Lauri Owen, and the Hunted series by Elle Hill.

How would you pitch No Angel to someone who has not heard of it before?

Think Bladerunner but with angels and demons instead of replicants.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that No Angel is set in?

It’s about a hundred years in the future, and humanity is able to travel the stars. Mortal kind aren’t aware angels and demons are still around, but they are and have embraced technology along with humans, although perhaps a little slower. This story is set in City Above, while my main character Lucien is a denizen of City Below, perhaps better known as Hell. The setting is somewhat gloomy, with bits of future technology popping up throughout.

Do you have a favorite scene in No Angel?

Several, but the one that tickles me the most is when Lucien is face to face with His Infernal Highness, being given orders to hunt an angel. I had this weird idea of who I wanted to play Satan, so I had fun writing it and seeing some of the responses from my beta readers.

Which character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I loved writing Lucien, the main character. I’d never really written a character who not only embraced his sexuality but reveled in it. The hardest was Miranda, because she’d been quite a shadowy figure in my mind, and I didn’t want her coming across as too cold and remote just because she’s an angel.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

I have a YA dystopian romance releasing in April 2015, plus the re-release of my debut scifi romance novel and its sequel.

Excerpt:

A couple of centuries ago, Lucien mused, he would've been forced to use the treacherous spiraling staircase that led down to Hell. Stone stairs that were covered in slime, cracked and shifting underfoot, with no handrail for safety, and no chance to withdraw. No light other than the lurid red glow from beneath. For those poor mortals travelling that way, the redness would have increased in step with the temperature as they descended, to the point where both would become unbearable, leaving them desperate to retreat. But then most would tumble headlong down the stairs long before being able to turn back, to lie broken and bleeding at the bottom. That would merely be the first taste of all the torments to come.

Instead, Lucien rode in the luxury of an elevator into the bowels of Hades, Hell, Purgatory—whatever mortals chose to name it. As one of its denizens, he had little to fear from such a trip Down Below. At least, normally he wouldn't. Tonight was different. He'd been summoned.

Lucien hunched deeper into his leather jacket, hands thrust into his pockets and the collar turned up around his neck, though not from cold. In all his years as an incubus, the big boss had never asked to see him before. He couldn't think of anything he'd done lately to warrant such attention. Or anything he hadn't done. There were plenty of lewd and despicable acts he'd committed. Things even the darkest of human minds couldn't possibly conceive, and several times over. That was his job after all. What else did anyone expect of a demon, for Hell's sake?

Review: Christmas with a Bite by Patricia A. Wolf

Christmas with a Bite
Release Date: December 15, 2014

ISBN:  1633751589
ISBN13: 9781633751583
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Sometimes the holidays totally bite...

This Christmas, Mara Livingston is determined to start over. But as she's driving to her "new" home, a freak winter storm forces her off the road. Now she's stranded in the middle of nowhere. Then he shows up. And there's something strangely familiar about him...

Connor Reece never expected to see Mara again. Nor is he prepared for the onslaught of emotions―including an unimaginable rush of desire―she stirs within him. Now he has a chance to claim the woman he's always wanted. Except, there are a couple of small details that Mara doesn't know. The first is that Connor is a vampire. And the second is that if his family finds out about Mara, she will most certainly be killed...

Mara is ready for a new start after she finalizes her divorce from her cheating husband. She becomes stranded during a snow storm and finds her way to a remote cabin. The man that lies there looks familiar, but she can't place him and she is thankful for his help. Connor is hiding away after the suicide death of his girlfriend. Mara, the woman he hasn't forgotten from one dance at his best friends brothers wedding many years ago, is the very last person he expects to show up on his doorstep. He still wants her, but has no choice but to keep her at arms length. That plan doesn't work as well as he wants it to.

The whole story is about how Mara and Connor are fated to be together. They went their separate ways, but found there way back to each other anyways. I enjoyed all the characters in this book. When it first started I thought it might be only Mara and Connor stuck in a cabin, falling in love and I am glad to say it was so much more than that. We get to meet friends and family and they are all involved in the overall storyline.  Mara has a really hard time trusting men after her ex husband and Connor has a secret he can't share with her, so its obvious that there was going to be a problem at some point. I really enjoyed how Mara found out about Connor being a vampire. For one, it wasn't expected and two, I think she handled it how I would have handled it if I was in her position. The romance and relationship developed nicely and it was easy to become invested in it's outcome.

I don't see anything that suggests CHRISTMAS WITH A BITE will be part of a series and that is totally OK because I was happy at the end and don't really have a huge pull to read more about Mara and Connor. Their story ended well and I am fine with it being kept that way. This was a nice fast paced, easy romance for those looking for one.

I gave it 4/5 stars
