The Proving Book #1
ISBN:   0994239106
ISBN13: 9780994239105
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Still grieving her beloved son, Kate O’Connor’s just going through the motions. She doesn’t care that strangers often shadow her on the unorthodox courier jobs she does for a friend. She doesn’t even care what’s in the packages until the day she returns from a special rush job with no memory of the event. But it must have been pretty wild, because now there’s a werewolf in her kitchen trying to kill her—and he’s just the first in line.

Dragged into a supernatural war of succession between the daughters of the dragon queen, Kate discovers a Sydney she never knew existed, peopled by all kinds of strange half-human creatures. To have any hope of surviving she must uncover the explosive secret hidden in her memory—but first she has to live through the night.

TWICEBORN is one of those books that I am having a really hard time reviewing. The reason being that I didn't dislike the book, but I didn't fall in love with it either. On top of that, there isn't an obvious reason for either, it just was.

TWICEBORN had a lot going for it. Kate was a likable character, the storyline keeps you guessing and the there is action all over the book. So why didn't I love it? I just didn't completely fall into the story and things that I wanted to happen, didn't happen like I thought they would. That's not a bad thing, just made it harder for me to totally fall into some of the major scenes.

There was a little bit of romance in TWICEBORN. It was definitely a sideline sort of thing and wasn't super exciting, but I know some people like a little romance with their urban fantasy so I thought I would mention it.

I got through TWICEBORN no problem and I even enjoyed most of it, but not enough to want to know what will happen next.

I gave it 3/5 stars

Interview + Giveaway: I Dream of Dragons by Ashlyn Chase

UFI welcomes Author Ashlyn Chase. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?
I think if you put together all my interviews and bios, there’d be nothing left to tell. I’m pretty much an open book. (Pardon the groaner.) I like people and I’m pretty easy to talk to, so if there’s anything you want to know, feel free to ask. If I don’t want to answer, I’ll just joke my way out of it.

What is your Favorite part of writing?
Let’s see…wearing my bathrobe and slippers to work. Spending time with my imaginary friends who tell me their stories. Sharing my crazy imagination with people, and hearing them say I’m brilliant rather than a crazy person. (Well, sometimes that too.)

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?
I’m a morning person. I like to get email out of the way and get into writing as quickly as possible. If ‘life’ gets in the way before that, I can get derailed for the whole day. I schedule everything else for the afternoon. Woe to the person who tries to interrupt my morning!

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?
There are a lot of authors I admire, and some I am lucky enough to call friends. I really don’t want to start naming people. If I forget to acknowledge someone and realize it later, I’ll feel awful. Some will be at the Fall in Love with New England conference in Manchester, NH, Oct. 14th and 15th, because I invited them, personally. (Hint) Readers! Check out: http://fallinlovewithnewengland.blogspot.com

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that I Dream of Dragons is set in?
A.C. It’s real-world Boston, Massachusetts. I’m a native of the area, so anything I describe, setting-wise, should be fairly accurate. The characters both want the only vacant apartment in one of those gorgeous old brownstones in Back Bay. The building on Beacon Street is loosely based upon an old brownstone that I lived in years ago.  It’s one of the prettiest areas of the city, in my humble opinion.

Which one character was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?
A.C. Easiest? I grew up with a lot of Irish-Americans. I loved the feistiness of the girls, especially. They took no nonsense from anyone. Rory’s sisters Chloe and Shannon were very different from one another, but I loved them both—especially Chloe. She had a good heart, but could never be called a pushover. Shannon was a bit softer, but if you went up against Chloe, you were going to lose. I loved how Rory would correct Shannon’s occasional blunt language, but he didn’t bother to call Chloe on hers, because, as he put it, she was ‘a lost cause.’ Whatever Chloe said or did, she was committed to it and wouldn’t back down.

Who was the hardest to write?
A.C. Probably the Leprechauns. Not having grown up with the legends, I had to research them a bit. Believe it or not, there’s a Leprechaun Museum in Dublin—and I went there. We also attended a story hour, which related more myths of the fairies and little people.
Here’s a story we were told.
Yes, leprechauns are supposed to have treasure that you can claim if you catch one. One day a young man came upon a leprechaun on a tree farm. He grabbed him and the leprechaun said, “Fine. You can have me gold, but you’ll have to dig it up.”
The young man said, “But I’ll have to go home and get a shovel, and if I turn my back you’ll be gone. How will I know where you’ve buried it?”
So the leprechaun said, “Fine. It’s under this tree. Take off your sock and tie it on a branch. When you come back you’ll know where it is.”
“Ha! You’ll just remove it as soon as I leave,” he said.
“No, I won’t.” Promised the little man. “On my honor. I won’t touch it.”
So the young man took off his bright red sock and tied it to the small tree. Satisfied that the leprechaun would leave it where it was, he went home and got his shovel. When he returned, every tree was covered with red socks. And the Leprechaun was nowhere to be found.
Yes, they’re tricky little buggers.

Ashlyn Chase has been a registered nurse for 20 years. During those years, she wrote articles for professional journals and a thesis, but eventually, thank goodness, discovered the joy and freedom of writing fiction.

Ashlyn considers herself lucky. Her degree in behavioral sciences is a combination of psychology and sociology, so she has worked with and studied people most of her life. She never has to write out exhaustive character sketches to understand her characters or predict how they will behave. That doesn't mean they don't surprise her. Sometimes they take her on grand unexpected journeys. For her, it gives "character driven novels" a whole new meaning.

Ashlyn has learned to go with the flow. To enjoy the journey is not only one of her writing goals, but also a challenge in life so she tries to follow where the story takes her. As such, she has lived in 17 different places over the years. At last, she's all settled down and comfy in New England.

Is there a grand design or do we decide our own fates? Perhaps if the powers-that-be have a plot, then they also give us the right to revise it. Ashlyn has certainly made detours on her path, but she thinks she's better for it. She's having fun at any rate and hopes that if she enjoys the journey, so will those around her—including her readers.

Review: Shadow Rites by Faith Hunter

Shadow Rites
Release Date: April 5, 2016
Publisher: Roc
Jane Yellowrock Book #10
ISBN:   0451465970
ISBN13: 9780451465979
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: NetGalley
Jane Yellowrock has her hands full in the latest novel in the New York Times bestselling series that captures “the essence of urban fantasy” (SF Site).

Slaying vampires is child’s play for skinwalker Jane Yellowrock. But handling the complicated politics of New Orleans’ supernatural players is another story...

Jane is keeping the peace between visiting groups of witches and vamps in the city, but then trouble comes knocking on her doorstep. When her house is magically attacked, the wild chase to find her assailants unearths a mystery that has literally been buried deep.

A missing master vampire, presumed long deceased, is found chained in a pit...undead, raving mad, and in the company of two human bodies. Now it’s up to Jane to find out who kept the vampire hidden for so long and why, because the incident could tip already high supernatural tensions to an all-out arcane war.

I loved everything about SHADOW RITES from beginning to end.

Jane's house is full again when the Youngers come for the witch conclave—which does not go as planned by the way. I love when they visit and the interactions with Angie and Little Evan are getting more entertaining—and a bit scary— as they grow up. On top of that Jane is forced to add yet another member—or three—to her household. She might have been hesitant about her new housemates, but they did a lot of good in SHADOW RITES and I think they will continue to be a good addition to Jane's little family.

Speaking of Jane's little family. I love Eli and Alex. They are a great team and I can't imagine her without them now. I enjoyed seeing the progression of Jane and George's relationship. It is really coming along and watching them grow closer makes my heart smile, they make a really great couple.

The Jane Yellowrock series never lacks action. Every book is full of bad guys and Jane kicking ass. Her life—and those she loves—are usually in danger and SHADOW RITES is no different. Thankfully everyone makes it through the book intact even though they were a little banged up at times.

Will the European vampires finally visit in book 11? Only one way to find out and I will be the first in line to read it.

I gave it 5/5 stars

amber-plaqueAbout Amber Lynn Natusch

Amber Lynn Natusch is the author of the bestselling Caged, as well as the Light and Shadow series with Shannon Morton. She was born and raised in Winnipeg, and speaks sarcasm fluently because of her Canadian roots. She loves to dance and sing in her kitchen—much to the detriment of those near her—but spends most of her time running a practice with her husband, raising two small children, and attempting to write when she can lock herself in the bathroom for ten minutes of peace and quiet. She has many hidden talents, most of which should not be mentioned but include putting her foot in her mouth, acting inappropriately when nervous, swearing like a sailor when provoked, and not listening when she should. She’s obsessed with home renovation shows, should never be caffeinated, and loves snow. Amber has a deep seeded fear of clowns and deep water…especially clowns swimming in deep water. Blood Borne Book #2

When the sun rises, the nightmares are supposed to fade . . .this time, they don’t.

An expose on the dangerous experiments Rachel and Lea uncovered with the Asclepius project turns the world against them.

Except for a single man who claims he knows about a hidden plan to complete what was started with Asclepius.

Faced with complications they could never have foreseen, and hunted by new and terrifying factions, once more they are in a race against time.

With a new set of clues to decipher.

A werewolf who claims he’s their friend.

And a Cazador . . . that isn’t supposed to exist.

This time either the two strong willed women will finally learn to trust one another . . . or end up watching one another die.

I enjoyed REPLICA more than RECOMBINANT.

I was really glad to see that Rachel and Lea weren't separated like I thought they were at the end of RECOMBINANT. I wasn't sure how that would work and I am glad that I didn't have to find out. They still have a few kinks to work out, but they truly make a great team and I enjoy both of their characters.

The addition of two new character was a bit iffy at first, but one in particular grew on me fast and I hope he sticks around for books to come. I think there is definitely something there between them and one of our main girls. The other still hasn't won me over, but I think when we learn more about them they just might grow on me. Our other main girl might have something with them, but right now there she doesn't trust them enough to explore the spark.

The transition from scene to scene could have been smoother. This happened in RECOMBINANT with going from POV to POV, but with REPLICA it was event to event. There were more than a handful of times that I had to swipe back a page on my Kindle because I was reading and all of a sudden we were in another place or another day and I thought maybe I skipped a page on accident. I didn't, the transition was just too fast and the last even was left unfinished in my mind.

REPLICA did a good job of growing the characters and the Blood Borne world. The story moved at a much faster pace than book one, and the events had a lot of action to keep my mind pumping. The ending was pretty jaw dropping and I plan to read book three when it's available.

I gave it 4/5 stars
