Review: Iron and Magic by Ilona Andrews (@ilona_andrews)

Iron and Magic
Release Date: June 26, 2018
Publisher: Self-Published
ASIN:  B07CZ39YYV
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Review Copy Source: NetGalley

No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.

Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.

Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she's trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify.

Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?

As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn.”

Hugh and Elara may do both.

I LOVE Kate Daniels and I love everything Ilona Andrews, but I was scared to read IRON AND MAGIC because I just couldn't imagine that Ilona Andrews could make me like Hugh enough to read a whole book about him. I was wrong. I enjoyed every single moment, and I see Hugh in a whole new light.

We already know the overall world, but we now get to see a different slice than we're used to. Hugh is a giant mess when we start IRON AND MAGIC. He has always been a bit of a dark character, but we see him at his lowest and watch him grow into a man he can start to be proud of. Elara is a bit of a mystery, but she has a strong following of people that look to her for protection. It takes a while to really find out about her, but there wasn't one point in the book that I didn't like her.

Hugh and Elara are anything but a happy couple. You can feel their attraction, but they will do anything to hide it and make each other miserable. They bicker and banter constantly, but it was pure entertainment. Things develop slowly, but they are definitely moving in a good direction.

I enjoyed getting to know the side characters. The Iron Dogs and Elara's people mixed well together and it was neat seeing them work together towards common goals. We also get a visit from some familiar faces and I can't wait to see more familiar faces come together in future books.

I'm excited to see Hugh and Elara grow as allies and partners and I'm excited to see what Kate and Hugh can do on the same side against Kate's dad.

I gave it 4/5 stars

Interview: A Tracker's Tale by Karen Avizur

UFI welcomes Author Karen Avizur. Thanks for Joining us!!

What can you tell my readers about yourself that they might not know from looking on your bio or reading in another interview?

I wrote my first story when I was twelve, working on a laptop. I'd save my story on a floppy disk. One time I left it in my back pocket and accidentally sat on it. I was in tears until my father managed to salvage it -- an early lesson on the importance of backing things up in multiple places!

What do you enjoy doing on your down time?

I take my dog Ginger on walks, though during the summer we usually only go in the mornings or evenings since it gets so hot down here in Florida. I'm also a big movie buff, and I love to read, mostly stuff similar to what I write, urban fantasy. That genre has always had a special place in my heart. I remember needing to wait a few years to read Goosebumps, since it scared me so much when I was younger, but when I got to my teens, it was the most awesome book series.

What is your Favorite part of writing?

I think when a character kind of pokes me and goes, "Nope, that's not what I'd do." That's pretty fun. Having a whole other world in my head is wildly entertaining. And making up all the rules for the science, breaking physics, so to speak. The sky's the limit.

Do you have any certain routines you must follow as you write?

Not routines, exactly. The only thing I really feel I need is the desire to write. Forcing a story to happen never makes a good story. The best stuff comes out when I've got a great idea that's fleshing itself out without me trying and I end up close to bursting, needing to get it written down. I actually wrote the first chapter of Trackers while on vacation, on my cell phone! I had this awesome idea for an introduction and absolutely needed to get it down somewhere.

What are some of your Favorite books or Authors in the Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal Genres?

I am a major Harry Dresden fan. Jim Butcher rocks. I also enjoy Seanan McGuire's books immensely, several of her series; the Newsflesh series is my favorite take on the zombie genre. I also liked Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series. Just an excellent world of werewolves and magic.

How would you pitch A Tracker's Tale to someone who has not heard of it before?

It's a day-in-the-life story following a psychic FBI agent, Katherine Colebrook, as she handles various cases involving "parasapiens". These most commonly include werewolves, vampires, and pucas (fae), and also others, some more dangerous, that pop up occasionally. And we follow her daughter, who is psychic too, and tends to find trouble.

Can you tell us a little bit about the world that the Trackers series is set in?

What fascinated me most was the idea of a world where supernatural-type creatures existed, and everyone knew and had always known. Most of the series I read and TV shows that I watch revolve around a world where these things are in the shadows. I thought it would be interesting to have things like civil rights issues for faeries, reality shows starring vampires, a werewolf that runs a company that sells certified silver-free products, and so on. How would they fit into society?

Do you have a favorite scene in A Tracker's Tale?

I think the court scene in the beginning is one of my favorites. I wrote it later and added it in, thinking it would be a great way to introduce Katherine, mostly

because she's out of her element. She's much more comfortable doing her job, where she calls the shots, than talking about it. Especially since she's a psychic, it's difficult testifying in a court case. She knows too much and feels like she's the only one in the room who really understands what's going on.

Which one character out of all your books was your favorite to write about? What about the hardest to write about?

I think my favorite character to write is Katherine's daughter Alexandra, just because she doesn't take any crap from anyone. She's had a difficult time of it, growing up psychic, but it's just made her stronger. She and her mother aren't always on the same page, but they've been through a lot together, and their close relationship means a lot to Alex.

What Other Projects can we look forward to reading from you?

A Tracker's Tale is just the beginning of Katherine's adventures. If everything goes according to plan, I'll be releasing the second novel in the Trackers series this October; my editor and I are working on it at the moment. Also, I have a prequel that I can't wait to eventually share with my readers. Katherine's life has been a long one, she's had to endure some tragedy, and this are what made her who she is. It's definitely an important part of her story that I can't wait to tell!

Karen Avizur was born in Montreal, and grew up in Long Island, New York, with stops in Connecticut and West Virginia along the way. She's been writing stories since she was twelve years old. In those early days, she discovered it was impossible to keep up with her thoughts by writing longhand, and ended up borrowing a 7-pound laptop from her dad, quickly honing her typing skills.

After graduating film school, Karen moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as a film editor for several years while also pursuing her writing. “I was taught that a film editor is really the final-draft screenwriter. It’s true,” she notes. “I’d written much of Trackers as separate short stories over the years, but being an editor helped me see how to weave those stories together into novel form.”

Amazon
Welcome to the strange and perilous world of Katherine Colebrook: FBI special agent, Los Angeles… Trackers Division.

In Katherine’s world, werewolves, vampires, pĂșcas, and other parasapien species – forced for centuries by human fear and prejudice to live at the fringes of society – have finally come out of hiding to demand their rightful place alongside us. It’s a fragile co-existence, fraught with mutual distrust: a new social contract for which the rules are still evolving. And when those rules break down – usually when a parasapien begins preying on humans – that’s when the Trackers step in. It’s their job to hunt them down and stop them by any means necessary.

Within this elite unit, Katherine Colebrook is one of the best. Her psychic abilities made her a natural for the Trackers Division, allowing her to move between the parasapien and human worlds in ways that no other agent could. But Katherine’s calling hasn’t come without struggle and losses along the way. As a single mother, she must contend with her teenage daughter, Alexandra, who not only shares Katherine’s psychic abilities, but seems determined to follow the same dangerous path as her mother.

And so, when Katherine’s latest assignment threatens to bring that danger too close home, she finds herself faced with the toughest challenge of her career: Can she protect her daughter’s life, while battling a ruthless adversary who’ll stop at nothing to destroy her?

Guest Blog + Giveaway: Embracing the Demon by Beth Woodward ( @beththewoodward )

UFI welcomes Author Beth Woodward. Thanks for Joining us!!

One morning you wake up. The birds are singing, the sun is shining, everything is wonderful…and then some strange guy comes into the bookstore where you work and tells you that you’re half demon. That’s pretty much what happens to my protagonist, Dale, in The Demon Within.

So what do you do?

I mean, you could scream or cry or go see a therapist (who will probably have you committed). But, this being 2018, I think there’s only one correct answer: you go home and built a Spotify playlist.

And thus you have the “So I’m a demon…now what?” playlist.

1) AC/DC, “Highway to Hell.”

I mean, this is kind of a gimmie, right? So what that you don’t actually know whether demons come from Hell. Neither do any of the other demons! But that doesn’t prevent them from grooving out to the music that honors their “heritage.” Also, it’s loud enough to block all those thoughts in your head who are screaming at you that you may just be evil now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l482T0yNkeo

2) Hall & Oates, “Maneater.”

Thankfully for you, none of the demons in my world are cannibals (that we know of). But in those initial hours after finding out, you may start to wonder whether Hall & Oates seminal tune and the sixth-best karaoke song in existence will start to sound a little more literal to you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRYFKcMa_Ek

3) Michael Jackson, “Smooth Criminal.”

…Or maybe new demon-you will end up doing something horrible, like murdering your poor girlfriend (who is, naturally, named Annie) in a fit of rage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_D3VFfhvs4

4) Bobby Darin, “Mack the Knife.”

…Or maybe you’ll just start robbing and killing people because you think it’s fun, like ol’ Mack the Knife. And honestly, it must be kind of fun, otherwise Bobby Darin wouldn’t sound so peppy when he’s singing about Mack, amiright?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiGFZUnJgqU

5) Guns n’ Roses, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.”

Oh no. There will be no knocking on Heaven’s door for you…and even if you were to knock, you’d be rejected…because you’re a demon! When it comes to Heaven, you’re like that solicitor who knocks on the door at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Unless you come bearing Girl Scout cookies, you’d better get the hell away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=301w_flI0oI

6) Radiohead, “Creep.”

By this time, you’re probably feeling pretty down on yourself. But don’t worry—you’ve got Radiohead’s “Creep” to keep you company, the seminal song of angst and self-loathing. You will play this on repeat for a while, because you are (in your mind) both a creep and a weirdo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFkzRNyygfk

7) Charlie Daniels Band, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

But maybe, after much wallowing, you’ll start to think about the bright side of being a demon. Like for example, we all know that the best part of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” was the hip backup band of demons that the devil summoned to accompany his fiddle-playing. They had a good beat, and you could dance to them. Johnny schmonny! #thedemonswererobbed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNSljt0i3TI

8) Five for Fighting, “Superman (It’s not easy).”

Being half-demon comes with a few perks. Like immortality. And SUPERPOWERS! Hey, maybe it isn’t easy to be you, but buck up: it’s a lot easier when you can fly, walk through walls, free time, or—like Dale—can control minds. Hmmm, that one would definitely be interesting…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRz4FY0ZcwI

9) Bobby Pickett, “Monster Mash.”

Being a “monster” is in the eye of the beholder. And maybe it’s easier to be a monster (or a demon) when you have your whole tribe around you, doing the Transylvania Twist. Dale’s had a few problems with that one, being a loner who spent 10 years on the run. But by the time we get to Embracing the Demon, Dale is well aware of her demon heritage. So maybe it’s time she finds a few like-minded monsters to mash with. (Also, this video is worth your time just to check out the crazy facial expressions!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNuVifA7DSU

10) The Rolling Stones, “Sympathy for the Devil”

Of course, this is the song that would close out your playlist, because it’s all about how evilness is relative—after all, “every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners saints.” It’s easy to put a label on something. But sometimes in real life, things escape easy categorization—like when you’re a demon who really wants to be a good person. When you’re half demon, it’s much easier to have sympathy for the devil. Maybe you both got assigned labels that don’t quite fit.

Growing up, she was Meg Murray with a dash of Oscar the Grouch. Dale Highland #2
Amazon BN Indiebound Mysterious Galaxy
Dale Highland never wanted to be a demon…but now she may be the only one who can save them all…

Dale Highland never wanted to be a demon, never wanted to go back to the supernatural world, but now she has no choice.

A militant anti-supernatural group called the Zeta Coalition is trying to kill Dale, and a mysterious illness ravages angels and demons throughout the world. As the death toll rises, and the Zetas get closer and closer to Dale, she starts to realize the two things are connected.

To save them all, Dale will have to team up with John Goodwin, the man she once loved. The man who destroyed her.

But by the time Dale and John figure out the Zetas’ real intentions, it may be too late…

Excerpt:

He wore a gray suit with a dark shirt and a blue tie that fit him so perfectly I knew it must have been custom made for him. His dark blond hair had been combed and gelled into submission. Normally, it stood up in random spikes around his head—not as a stylistic choice, but because he had the tendency to run his fingers through it nervously until it went in about 14 different directions.
Until that moment, I hadn’t been convinced he’d survived the fall off the roof of Amara’s estate. Every night in my dreams, I stared at his broken body, tears running down my face. I wasn’t sure why I cried: because I had killed him, or because he had destroyed me.
But here was John, very much alive, looking like the fantasy of some billionaire boss about to have hot monkey sex with his secretary on the desk. He didn’t look like the John I remembered, who’d spent most of our time together wearing blood-covered t-shirts. Which one was the real John, I wondered, the suave businessman or the urban warrior? And then I noticed the pin on his lapel: a flaming angel that matched the ones on the others’ pendants. John had declared his allegiance, and it wasn’t to me.
“My apologies for the mess,” he said. “Ephraim, Leah, please clean that up. Make sure you dispose of the body well. I don’t want him coming back to haunt us one of these days.” A man and a woman jumped out of their seats and scooped up the body, leaving just a puddle of blood behind. Guess they’d be getting that later.
John turned to the rest of the group. “Let’s not forget why we’re here. This illness is already devastating our community, and it’s getting worse. The Zeta Coalition created it with the intent of wiping out supernaturals—angels and demons. And if we can’t cooperate, they will succeed.”
“She’s the daughter of our worst enemy!” someone shouted.
“Amara is dead. And Dale is not Amara.” He paused. “Covington is right. We need more information if we’re going to survive this, and Dale is our best hope of gaining access to their records containment facility.”
“What about taking an army and storming the compound, like we talked about a few weeks ago?” someone asked.
To my surprise, it was Tina who answered. “The compound is too heavily fortified, and its underground architecture would make it difficult to strong-arm. We’ve run the scenario many times, accounting for the different variables. The most likely outcome is that we’d end up trapped down there while the Zetas pick us off.”
“There must be another way,” a woman said.
“Maybe, but this is the best way,” John replied. “We all know Dale can do things that no one else can. Her return may have been a coincidence, but we should use that to our advantage.”
“I haven’t agreed to anything yet,” I managed to get out through gritted teeth.

Apha
The Infinity Division #3
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes Noble / iBooks / Kobo
“A fun YA sci-fi story with a compelling cast of characters.” —Kirkus Reviews on Infinity
Sera is the obsession of a killer chasing a ghost. G is a soldier with too much blood on his hands.
Dylan lost the only person he ever loved—and will stop at nothing to get her back.
In a whirlwind chase that takes them back to where it all started, Sera, G, and Dylan will have to confront their demons—both physical and mental—and each other, in order to win their freedom.

Excerpt:

The rain stopped, and the wind outside had settled, leaving an uncomfortable silence in its wake. I didn’t have a problem with the quiet. I liked it, in fact. But this was something a little different. This was uncomfortable. The kind of stillness that came from forced proximity to someone or something that made your skin itch and your stomach roil. The kind of hush that usually set in right before a devastating storm or a natural disaster.
He did this sometimes. Just sat across from me and stared. He usually wouldn’t even say anything. I didn’t think he expected me to say anything, either. He just looked. Sometimes it lasted a few minutes, just long enough to send that chill skittering up and down my spine. Other times it would go on for hours. He’d blink and breathe and fidget, but his eyes…those remained locked on me, his unhealthy mix of sadness and lust and greed and anger crushing me to the point of breathlessness.
We were at it again, and I was just about out of patience. It was one thing to have been ripped away from my home, from my life, by that madwoman, Cora Anderson. It was another to have her poke and prod and use me as a science experiment. She’d altered my mind. Made me forget most of my life before the day I woke up a prisoner on the floor of her cold, dank cell. Those things were all bad, but having been “rescued” by this bastard and forced to stay by his side at all times? That was an entirely new level of torture.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?” His tone was acidic and his jaw tight. He had a temper, this guy. I’d seen it multiple times. He’d never done anything more than scream at me, but it was only a matter of time with people like this. I wasn’t sure how I knew that, but I felt it in my bones. Maybe I’d known someone like him at home. Maybe it was just intuition.
“Yes,” was all I replied. I found that simple, one-word responses went over the best. Or, more accurately, the worst. When I said too little, he grew agitated. He wanted me to talk to him, yet the things that came out of my mouth weren’t ever what he wanted to hear. I didn’t act like he’d hoped I would, didn’t say the things he longed to hear. Some days he was determined to change me. Others, he was rabid, blaming me for not behaving like myself and demanding that I wake up.
Forget that I had no idea who I was.
“While it’s not okay, I understand.” He offered me a smile—a small, tentative twitch of his lips and gentle shrug of his shoulders. He was making an effort to be kinder today, going out of his way to speak softer and move slower.
That made me even angrier.
“You understand? Then my life is complete. All I’ve ever wanted was the understanding of a serial killer.” Even if I hadn’t been thinking about…someone else, I would have lied. The fact that I wasn’t focused on him, and him alone, drove Dylan—my savior, my captor—crazy. But the truth was, I was thinking of him. That other him. How could I not? Even if I didn’t find myself missing him every moment of every day in an almost physical way, I wouldn’t be able to put him out of my mind because he was technically sitting here across from me.
